Was I the only patient that got gagged? After my regular dental checkup I was about to get up from the chair and Dr. Cohen randomly says, "let me check ..." and just suddenly & surprising stuck his index finger down my throat and finished saying to check my gag reflex. Everything was unexpected and random. In all the years I've been going to the dentist I have never experience this before. I honestly left feeling weird about it, I even asked a few people of that had ever happen to them before. All stated that was NOT normal. I also do not like the fact he didn't wear a mask, and his breath wasn't pleasant and kept speaking on my face I wanted to puke. I've been coming to this dentist's office for a little over a year (just the basic 6 month cleanings and checkups), and my most recent visit will be my last. Dr. Cohen seems incapable of understanding that you should not insult a customer's gender point blank to their face, nor make racist stereotypes. While I had to sit through my cleaning he commented, "I don't know what it is with you women, you just love to give men a hard time. It must be in your DNA." I don't even know where to begin with this other than to say I feel so bad that your mostly female staff must have to put up with your nonsense day in and day out. Since it has been well over half a century that this kind of language was ok, how about you get with the new century and understand that NO ONE wants to go to a doctor only to be belittled by them for a half hour. I wanted to get out of the chair by that point, but you weren't done with your tirade against the world evolving past you. You also came up with this gem of, "no matter where a person is from, if they're from a house in Newport Beach or a hut in Santa Ana they can either have great teeth or bad teeth." While you might have thought you could get away with your racial stereotype in front of me you were sorely mistaken. Again, you should really get with the times and learn some new material. In case you missed it, patients DO NOT want to spend their good time and money sitting through a lecture by an old crank who can't or won't read the room and know when to hold their tongue and just make pleasant conversation. He is efficient, professional, informative, friendly, funny and somehow made me forget to be terrified (I have always been a dental visit coward). I am a dentist's nightmare. I only come in when my teeth hurt every couple of years. Dr Cohen is always welcoming and never shames me for my poor decisions. Works with my schedule. Works with my insurance company to reduce my out of pocket cost. His shots don't hurt. He's funny. Nice saltwater aquarium in waiting area I also think he truly loves what he does, this is evident since the man hasn't aged a day since I've been coming to him. I trust this man. I give one star but he deserves no star. I had appt with his office and one week before they sent this text. I will download the text in photos. I've been vaccinated one only and I'm very healthy man. I simply wanted a cleaning and the doctor said I must do a covid19test before I come and they wouldn't do a cleaning on that day. I decided to go back to my prior dentist as this is more than an Inconvenience but it is Mis-guided control of patients as the federal Government desires to do; but has not been allowed because of our constitution is against forcing individuals to give up their rights! Dr Cohen was born into the same faith as me but has lost his mind to think he can send me a text like this to force me into his plan! I instead surely choose Gods plan, and follow our constitution of the great USA. Our forefathers new this day would perhaps come and in the first two paragraphs of our Declaration of Independence shows. Dr Cohen has a right to change office policy but not to force me one week before the appt to change my own personal choices! The text as you can see that I was sent says two weeks before and it was sent 1 week before my appt so he should have made an exception and seen me aft I sent proof of one covid test even though I refused to be tested as I'm very healthy. I decided to go back to my prior dentist who abides by the USA constitution and doesn't force his patients to do testing or be vaccinated. I can have my cleaning and my freedoms in tact! If we allow doctors and dentists the right to force patients to go against their freedoms we as a country are in grave danger already for the freedoms taken away! Every unborn child's freedom to Life has been removed! I won't allow mine to be removed! This cleaning would have cost me nothing as I have health plan but I prefer to pay full price than allow my freedom taken away! What about you and yours? By the way I could not call Dr Cohen his number doesn't work so he called me; reiterating I must get a covid test and that he wouldn't do my cleaning the first time I see him. I've been seeing Dr. Cohen for years. As does my whole family of 5. When my twons needed braces Dr. Cohen managed to fit is in and in 4 days pulled 8 teeth from 1 child and 9 from the other. This service allowed my girls to get going on their treatment promptly and efficiently. But mostly my kids love Dr. Cohen and swear he gives the best shots..they dont hurt. Even After many extractions my kids have no anxiety going to Dr. Cohen. Most recently I was in need of extensive dental work including extraction, bridges molds etc... Dr. Cohen took my extensive procedures and now I have a beautiful smile again. His schedule is very flexible open early and late daily and open on Saturday. I definitely recommend Dr. Cohen. We are so happy to return to Dr. Cohen's dental office! My mom is a long time client and had extensive work done in 2018. Due to the pandemic she was not able to see him. Finally, by simply taking a covid test prior to her evaluation appointment she was reunited with her FAVORITE dentist Dr. Cohen. I stayed for the appointment and got to see him at work for the first time. He has a fantastic upbeat personality, very personable with an uplifting entertaining approach that put my elderly mom at ease. He even assisted get my Mom into the chair and comfortable, it was a group effort! Here's a true pro with a lot of wisdom and mastery experience in dental care. At first Dr.cohen seemed to have fixed some issues a ortho Messed up on. Result, 4 bridges. Now dr. Cohen did fix old Marlyn Bridges with his type bridge work. They seem to hold well. I was good. BUT, they would not stay cemented in, I would have go back take time off work to do so. Then every 4-5 years he want to replace them with New Bridges. At first I said ok. But 15 years later and each one replaced 3 times, dollars started adding up$$$ ..this was getting ridiculous. Then on a 4th time he wanted to replace another one, while removing the bridge he broke off the holding eye tooth at the gum line. then he had to put 5 little posts to have some base to cement to. This crap came loose one to many times. Then he wanted extend the bridge to the 4th tooth in front. I said NO! Just cement the old one back with new post. He got flustered. Ok,ok. Now I'm going show a picture of my bridge that Had No mark what so ever on it when it was take out. 4pics 1st photo shows the cut out he did with his drill before cementing back in. This was not there when he pulled it, WOW!This pic was taken when I got in my truck to leave! 2nd pic.this was the results of him breaking the eye tooth off under this bridge, causing as you can see infection, bleeding. 3 pic. This what it looked like under the bridge, top tooth imbedded below the gum line. 4th pic. This was for the best. I had to find a DDS that had better skill and equipment. My new dentist had to extract both teeth covering up the whole with human tissue and recommend implants witch I can't afford right now so instead I got a flipper. Pic. # 5. So, with all said. If there were anything lower then 1 star Dr. Louis Cohen would deserve it. This clown sponged off my Dental Insurance 15 years. His technology it stuck in the dinosaur age. I'm really not sure what to think. I've had good and bad dentists, and his demeanor (and reviews by friends) makes me want to say he's good. But I really felt like the whole process was rushed and incomplete. On the plus side there was no 'hustle' mentality, and he only suggested one valid upgrade. But he never once tried to sell fills, whitening, or any of the 100 other extras most offices push too hard. On the bad side I got this feeling I was being rushed. Even my first cleaning in several years only took 20 minutes, and felt incomplete. The prior office said the xrays showed 2 caveties and that I needed deep cleaning. Dr. Cohen never noticed the caveties and (his assistant) gave me a regular cleaning. Time will tell.... read more

I felt the need for an update for these great people. First off, Evon you are great, you are a master in keeping up with everybody's appointment and i really felt your absence when i needed the doctor last summer and when you were on your vacation. New assistant is super friendly, fast and skillful. She trimmed my temp caps for 85 times and she was still friendly :) And the master, Dr Cohen is all you need when you have something going on with your teeth health. Do not get fascinated with other dentist offices that are full of paintings and horse statue ( like i care when i have the worst pain). You cant match his professionalism anywhere else and also the way he handles his patience. He is gonna save your broken tooth and charge you less unlike those fancy dentists where you have to have an implant for a fortune. Honest, fair, reliable, old-fashioned dentistry. The first time I went in, I didn't realize he doesn't take debit or credit cards. Cash or checks only. He didn't miss a beat, just told me to get him next time! Not "bring it by tomorrow". Not "mail it". Just pay me next time. Granted, some of the equipment looks a bit past its prime, and you won't get fancy digital xrays here. What you will get is, as I said, honest, fair, reliable, dentistry. I love Dr. Cohen. I've been going to him for practically my whole life and always enjoy seeing him. He makes you feel comfortable since going to the dentist can be a scary thing for some people. He is very friendly. Also he does make himself available if there are any issues that you have. The only things I've had to get done at his office besides x-Ray, cleaning and fillings, was getting my wisdom teeth pulled out and boy can I say he gives the best shots ever and I'm a type of person who hates getting shots at the doctors. I understand what some reviewers are saying that they feel "rushed" and I have had a few times where I didn't get in at my set appointment time, but he is still very thorough with each of his patients. He is very good at what he does. He will explain what procedure you need and why. I have been going to Dr. Cohen's office for about 8 years now and he is very honest. I once took my kids to one of those "carnival kiddie" dentist offices where you wonder if you are being charged for the air conditioning in the building. They told me my son and daughter had tons of work and an extraction that was needed. I was hesitant at first to take my children anywhere else--knowing how frightened they were. However, I needed a second opinion and I got one. Dr. Cohen told me my kids did not need much work done and made sure my children were comftorable. Dr. Cohen has been my dentist for a decade and at 30 years old that's a third of my life! He has taken such great care of my dental needs. 5 years ago my son was born with cerebral palsy and lots of medical issues. I ignored my dental health and when I finally made time to go Dr. Cohen kept me positive and promised slowly but surely we'd get my mouth back in order. Dr. Cohen is not only personable, but hilarious. Me & my husband went to see him for the first time today and we immediately felt like we'd known him for years. The first thing he told me is that he knew my husband was from the mid west and that I was a California girl. I asked him "How's that? I was a Registered Dental Asst for Dr Cohen for 5 years (1988-1992). I sent my kids, parents, siblings, uncle, aunt, cousins and friends to him. To this day, my kids say he was the best dentist ever. If they didn't live in Montana, Missouri and Guam, they would be bringing there own families to him. He is absolutely magical when giving injections. My husband & I have been coming here for a few years. I usually don't have any issues with my teeth so when I went there, he didn't try to say I needed additional work which was the reason I stayed with Dr. Cohen. THEN, my husband came & he needed dental work. This doctor told my husband he is "recommending" to remove the cavity but come to find, it was not covered by the insurance cuz he was not required. I was pissed but my hubby didn't was to argue. Work was done & cost was negotiated with Dr. Cohen & my hubby. Now, I tried to schedule an appointment for my son on a Saturday because he goes to school. Dr. Cohen answered the phone and tells me "no HMO appointments on Saturday's" Are u kidding me?! My husband invested 7k in his teeth in this office & he's telling me my son can't come in on a Saturday for a check-up!? I've had it! I will be searching for a new Dentist!! Very honest dentist. Just like CF said, not fancy office, does not have the latest equipment, old furniture, but he only recommends treatment that's necessary without the inflated price. Dr. Cohen ha been practicing for probably more than 25+ years, he is a humorous and friendly guy. He will tell you his life story, his wife, his adult kids, his house, everything! He gives pain free shots that even my kids did not even know that he's already done. He charges according to the insurance booklet, does not inflate price, treats you all the same whether you have HMO, PPO, or cash. He is also very accommodating to patient's schedule, he is a very dedicated and honest dentist that I highly recommend. I'm starting to get mixed emotions about this dentistry. I don't want to dis Dr. Cohen since he's a nice guy but having me come 5 times just to replace 4 fills is a little ridiculous. Luckily I have a flexible job, couldn't imagine how I would do it if I didn't. He hasn't even done my cleaning for the year. I feel like he takes on too much. Jumping from room to room. He rushes himself that I'm starting to doubt the quality of service. A lady went in with a crown that fell off and my wife had one of her fills fall out within a week of seeing him. Hands down the best dentist, ever! Dr. Cohen is incredibly nice and he understands that money does NOT grow on trees. I do not have dental insurance, I pay out of pocket every time and he is so understanding when I need a little more time to come up with the whole payment. I have hated going to the dentist all of my life, particularly because the idea of a needle piercing my gums is terrifying! I never felt the needle when he has had to numb me up, his technique is flawless! I have gotten crowns here, fillings, root canals, and I got a wisdom tooth extraction (I was not under anesthesia). I asked him to removed the tooth in one piece (if possible) and he did just that ! I also had an infected root canal and I called in without an appointment he rushed me in and made time to see me. The removal was the next day! The staff is nice, but I come here because Dr. Cohen is honest and hardworking -- he understands that tooth aches are serious and can interfere with daily activities. He's the most honest dentist I've met. He won't ever recommend treatments that are bogus or overpriced hype, and the bill is never inflated with all these tacked-on treatments. Granted, it's not the fanciest office, but the dentists I've been to with the fancy offices were scam artists. Dr. Cohen has a good chairside manner too, and spends enough time on you. He can be behind schedule because he has tons of patients, but doesn't rush the procedures. The teeth cleaning I got from the hygienist was just average and rushed. And some of the equipment and the office needs to be replaced/remodeled. For some people that can be a turnoff. He's also from the old-fashioned side of dentistry, so don't expect fancy new treatments or zoom whitening.
