Curry Chicken Balls - inside to show the filling.
    C R.

Stopped in to check out Post Market and came across this place. I got an order of their Curry Chicken Balls. They were made fresh and came out hot. The dough reminded me of a similar thing my grandmother used to make. The consistency of the dough was spot on and there wasn't too much curry flavor. I would have liked more curry but it was still delicious. They were cute pear shaped and the filling was enough - I love the dough part of these type of dumplings; others may want more filling. I'd get them again if I came back for a visit since I don't live in Houston.

Overall this place was good, but not great. I was expecting a little more bang for the buck and richer flavors than what was delivered on my plate.

They've done a good job of maintaining the space over the years as well, making sure to renovate. Even though I've been here so many times over the course of my life, this is the first time I get to write a review! I only remembered to take pictures of a few dishes that we got - beyond that I was too occupied with enjoying the food. The steamed shrimp were amazing! So sweet, easy to peel, and they provide gloves and wet wipes! The lobster noodles were also fantastic with the noodles absorbing so much flavor. Not pictured were the Peking Pork Ribs which were phenomenal! Crispy on the outside, flavorful, sweet, and tender. I was eating that dish like candy. Throughout the meal, our plates were exchanged for new ones, which was super helpful in starting clean again. The price point at Fung's may be more expensive than other Chinese restaurants, but this is definitely an elevated dining experience with consistently high quality food and presentation!

That said, they're still busy as hell, so expect a wait- especially during weekend lunch hours. I went on a Saturday for a late lunch, and the place was packed. Surprisingly, we didn't have to wait very long. Our waitress was hyper as hell, and I loved it. She was goofy, sweet, and had no problem answering all of our questions. To start, I ordered the fried shrimp balls and shrimp shu mai. The shu mai was good... exactly what I expected. Nothing out of the ordinary, but solid. The fried shrimp balls were also good and pretty much what I was expecting. Honestly, it's probably the closest I can get to Trini-Chinese dim sum in Houston lol. I just need more hot sauce! For my entrée, I got the fried lobster with salt and pepper seasoning- duh, that's what I grew up eating. Back in the day, it was one lobster for $20! These days it's about $33 a plate, which is still pretty reasonable considering it's lobster and the portion is hefty. I ate the whole plate myself and honestly could've gone for more. If you've been coming here for years, not much has changed. The food is still good, and the kitchen menu portions are generous.

We came with a group of 18 people, and the bill ended up being around $972. Unfortunately, most of the dishes were more impressive visually than flavor-wise. The colorful green fried rice looked unique, but honestly just tasted like regular fried rice. The green beans were overcooked, so they lost the crunch and sweetness that usually make that dish enjoyable. The green curry was extremely spicy, but outside of the heat, it wasn't very memorable. The shaking beef dish looked amazing presentation-wise, but the sauce was too sweet for a savory dish, and the crispy rice pairing just didn't work well for me. I initially thought the duck dish was Peking duck, but it was actually the Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck. Even so, everyone at my table agreed we still preferred the traditional Peking duck style. The duck itself lacked flavor for us, and the skin was soft instead of having the crisp texture we were hoping for. The only dishes I genuinely enjoyed were the soup dumplings, cucumber salad, and fried dumplings. Most of the other dishes at the table were barely touched. If you're looking for colorful, aesthetically pleasing food and great presentation, you may enjoy this place. But if flavor is your main priority, this spot just wasn't for me personally.

Yes, you're in a grocery store lobby, so to speak, and yes, there's not much atmosphere other than the people streaming by going into that grocery store, but the three items I ordered (black bean ribs, har gow, shu mai) were all solid. What it lacked…read morefrom the larger, traditional banquet hall vibe, it made up for in lack of pretension and lots of focus on the quality of the food and service. Sadly, it seems like those days are long gone as the latter is on a downhill slope. Has ownership changed? (#1) I'm not sure, but so much else has. There's no tea offered, but bottled water. Service and the kitchen staff is a mess where it's most evident during their busiest hours. At one point, Cantonese was spoken but it also seems that's no longer the case. Previously the food was passable, but now it's near abysmal. Siu mai was hearty, but fairly bland. The same applies to their spare ribs (排骨), beef balls (牛肉球), and steamed glutinous rice in leaf (糯米雞). I felt their custard buns (奶黃包), fried stuffed crab claw (釀蟹鉗), fried glutinous dumpling (鹹水角) and the turnip cake (蘿蔔糕) were dried out. While the shrimp dumplings (蝦餃) and rice rolls (腸粉) mostly passed the test, it needed lots of soy sauce + condiments to be worth it. The only winner was their beef chow fun (乾炒牛河), where the beef and ho fun noodles were tender, while also being adequately greasy. The bonus bits of fried egg within were a nice surprise. While the prices range from $3.75-$9.70, a majority of it will average out to be $5-6 a dish. This isn't a terrible deal per se, especially during these times. However, it is a big price to pay for service issues and sub-par quality dim sum. While I'm hopeful that they'll rebound and I hope the Joy returns, but I don't think I will. __________ (#1) FZ / FJ peeps, where ya at?

The sweet & sour was perfect lightly battered and crispy. The hot & sour could've been a bit more sour but had a small kick to it. It was perfect for my parents, but my husband and I had to add some chili oil & soy sauce for more flavor. The quality of the food 9/10, the price was a bit on the pricey side for the portions of the dishes. The hot & sour soup was $17! It wasn't anything special about it.
