Oh, I loved my virgin visit here. A cool dark fall evening, and a deep need for deep relaxation. And that's just what I found at Loyly. It's a tiny little space, but just enough for a handful of people to get away from the daily grind and enjoy the sauna and steam room. And while I thought two hours would be too long, getting to relax in between saunas while reading the magazines available and drinking the cool water just made the time fly. I had a prenatal massage with Kim that was amazing. They miraculously fit me in the same day that I called, for a thirty minute massage, and she hit all of the acupressure points to hopefully induce labor. It's always a joy to be at Loyly and I'm glad I went there for this, too. The facility is clean, inviting, rejuvenating. And Kim is suuuper nice, professional, and strong! Love it there. read more

I came here yesterday for the first time, and I can't wait to come back! I had an hour long Radiance facial with Heather- and wow, she is incredible! She's got a great touch and is incredibly knowledgeable about not only the product lines they carry, but about the science of skin care in general. I had an hour to spend in the sauna before my treatment (something I'm not super familiar with), but the girls at the front desk did a great job of explaining how everything worked and what to expect. The facilities were small and intimate, but didn't feel crowded whatsoever. The whole place smelled like eucalyptus, which was very soothing. Highly recommend this place! read more

A great place, but I'm only rating it 4 stars because the times for men are limited to co-ed which is limited for me, and on Sunday morning to mid after noon only. HELLO??? I won't be going on a Sunday during football season. They should make it Saturday instead. What were they thinking with that schedule? Women can probably care less if they go on a Sunday anyhow. Ah, Loyly. Such a lovely place to relax and let the world melt away. It's a simple concept: sauna, steam room, common area, all for a nominal fee. But I don't think there is any other spa in Portland with such a modern, clean, zen aesthetic. These things matter when you're trying to leave the stresses of your everyday life behind. Let me count the ways! Loyly gets me through the Portland winters, dazzles me in the summer (when you may just have the place to yourself for 2 hours), and if you follow the alternating hot/cold sauna regimen, your body will feel simply amazing. Some staff changes at this location have transformed the space with added warmth and care. Received a gloriously relaxing and tension-reducing massage from Dainichia. I have chronic neck and shoulder tension, considerably reduced after the session. Dainichia recommended a treatment plan that included not only massage, but talking about posture and other contributing factors to alleviate my discomfort and to address the root causes. I really appreciated her thoroughness and obvious deep care for my wellbeing. I never knew about Loyly before this treatment and will now recommend Dainichia to all of my friends. read more

Literally one of the worst customer service experiences of my life. I was gifted a 90 minute massage for my birthday I called to set up an appointment, they looked up my info and confirmed that it was for 90 minutes and had been paid for. I show up to my appointment telling them I forgot my actual certificate but they said they could look it up on the computer and that it was fine. I went into the room for my massage, and had one of the best massages I've ever had by one of the male masseuses' there. I came out totally blissed out and handed them some money so that I can get change to tip him. I was then told that I owed them $90 for my massage. I was shocked and completely stressed out especially after my massage, that's the last thing I want to hear. The lady at the front basically called me a liar and called her colleague over to "back her up" they basically ganged up on me. Then she had the male manager come in who was extremely catty and unprofessional insinuated that I was lying and that I was a thief. They took my credit card info and said if I could provide proof of my gift certificate that they weren't going to charge me. Super stressed out after my massage I drove home took a picture of my gift certificate and sent it to them per their instructions. Then all of a sudden they were nice as could be, TOO LATE they proceeded to apologize but the damage was already done having such a rude customer service like that after a massage is the last thing that you want to deal with as far as the spa Business goes. It was literally the worst customer service I've ever had in my life and I will not ever return. They need to check their management staff that's not how you should treat your customers read more

I have to say that the aggressive rudeness, ambivalence, and complete lack of hospitality or customer service was overwhelming and bizarre walking in at 2:30 pm today. I happen to love spa treatments, and have had the pleasure of going to some of the best spas across the country. I'm not sure where these girls at the front desk think they are, but I have been treated far better pretty much everywhere else I've ever been from Beverly Hills to NYC. After a challenging five minutes with these two women, we couldn't have gotten out of there any faster. And looking at several of the other one star reviews, this seems like a chronic issue for this spa. Curious how the owner has no interest in creating a friendly, welcoming environment. To each his/her own! But there are plenty of other places in town who will graciously take my money to provide a much better experience. The front desk staff at Zenana spa around the corner couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating to us; I highly recommend going there instead!! read more

For the uninitiated, this can be a confusing place. Don't think plush, Canyon Ranch style; think YMCA. Loyly is a simple community steam room, sauna room and cold shower in between. It's almost like what you might have in your own home if you could afford it -- and you made the facilities large enough for a family of 8 to use. But since most of us can't afford to have these spa features in our own homes, much less want to maintain and clean them, Loyly allows the commoner to enjoy the benefits of a high-end club at a reasonable cost. Stepping out of the rainy, 40 degree grey of Portland and into the warmth of the sauna was heavenly! Alternating between heating up and cooling off (suddenly via the icy cold rainshower or slowly while reclining on one of the three wooden loungers) helps the body relax and detox. As others have noted, there is an open locker room and showers on one side of the facilities, while the steam/sauna are on the other side. The inner part of the U-shaped lay-out houses the staff and materials (towels, robes, slippers, products, and a small kitchen). The additional star for this rating is for the ability to order up a foot bath with aromatherapy products, DIY salt scrubs and face masks, and different types of hot tea. Ladies, bring a swimsuit or hot yoga attire -- and gents, shorts -- during co-ed hours; otherwise, it's up to you how free you want to be. read more

I've been coming to Loyly since they opened and absolutely love it. What it's good for: QUIET and spartan relaxation in and out of the wet and dry saunas the amazing food soak that just adds to the relaxation the wonderful facial steam single serve Dr Hauschka products if you get an urge for a mask or scrub being naked or in your swimsuit while you sweat, whichever is comfortable I usually take 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough round of heating up in the dry sauna and cooling down. Sometimes I do a quick rinse in the regular shower just on my feet and legs for an added boost during cool-downs. (I was there a month ago and noticed a galvanized metal cold "plunge" bath near the central shower, so as of 11/2011 that is available too.) At around the 1 hour mark I start to feel warm in my core and feel the tension in my shoulders start to melt away. It's so relaxing I have never even gotten a massage. I bring my own lotion for use afterward as well as a plastic bag for my wet swimsuit. The times I have forgotten a bag, the staff at the front desk has been very accommodating and given me one to contain my sodden stuff. In fact the staff has always been quite helpful and nice, though they are never in-your-face about anything that I have experienced. There are a few rules: be quiet, don't bring your facial masks and body scrubs in, note the time you enter as you're charged by the hour. It's highly recommended that you make a reservation because it gets so busy. The process of coming here and using the facility isn't all that different than a rec center pool. Minus the splashing. You get a day use locker, 2 towels (use one to sit on in the sauna!), and flip flops. I always opt for the robe, too. You shower off before entering either of the saunas and proceed from there however it suits you. It's always so nice to have a final shower and get dressed in a pair of sweats - I recommend bringing clean comfy clothes for your trip out the door. I've noticed other reviewers commenting on the spare wood benches and the lack of a comfy "lounge" sense to the place. It's not a spa in the padded and pampering sense but in the cleansing and unplugging way. More for the meditation set. In the winter it's too dark to do more than kind of peruse one of the magazines they have available or contemplate quietly; in the summer I bring a library book and enjoy that along with the breeze coming in through the big roll-up door during my cool-downs. It's not intended as a social sauna unless you reserve for a party. If you're looking for a retreat in town where you can really let your mind get quiet and sweat out the stresses of daily life, this is the place to come! read more

I just received a wonderful soothing massage from Kim. She made sure to concentrate on the spots I wanted concentrated on and provided me with some much needed relaxation. Kept conversation at times but only at my own comfort level and allowed me to relax. I highly recommend her. Having just recovered from a cold, I felt my body needed some industrial housekeeping. Craving a steam, I figured I'd give this place a try. Loyly is clean and affordable. I only wanted to use the hot rooms, so I cannot attest to the other services they provide here, though the therapists that I did see, seemed lovely and their clients looked happy and relaxed. The steam room is perfectly hot but not unbearable and smells of eucalyptus and lemongrass. There is a cold shower and soaking tub between the steam and sauna for those brave enough for the quick cool down. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to cool down gradually between hotboxes while relaxing with a book, magazine or your own thoughts on the wooden benches with a cup of cold water or some cleansing tea that you can refill at will. The decor is appropriately minimal and the owner, Jess, is warm and friendly. Salt scrubs and other products are available for purchase to take home or for single use at the spa. The policy not allowing the use of personal products from home might be off-putting to some at first, but I appreciated that the place didn't smell like a melange of beauty products. Women only on Tues and Thurs, and Men on Mon and Wed. When it's co-ed, bathing suits are required, on single sex days, go in the buff or however you're comfortable. 2 towels and flip-flops are provided with the facility fee. I'll be back! read more

My partner and I have been going to Loyly (both locations) for the past few years. We have used the Sauna and had massages. Most times it's a good experience. However, this week we had poor customer experience. My partner booked an appointment for the Sauna through the website earlier in the week. Their online system only allows you to book for yourself (no option to add another person). The normal process is to call the exact location and ask them to add me to the appointment. We called today and the lady said they were booked and could not accommodate 1 more person. When we explained the clunky process of adding another person, they replied that they were aware and to just call in to adjust the appointment for 2 people. That's what we did? We had to cancel the appointment because they refused to accommodate 1 more person. Unfortunately, we may turn to another Sauna facility from now on. read more

loyly! ....don't ask me how to say it, just go and enjoy it. i'm about the least-zen person i know, and this place even got me to chill out. that's saying a whole freaking lot, people. as mentioned in other reviews, there's a whole lot of naked going on here. oddly, it does seem like you're judged for wearing a bikini, which is so counterintuitive and, well, i've come to not care; i'm a 'never-nude' and even blissful relaxation isn't going to change that. the nakeds will just have to get over it. though it's nice to see so many people comfortable in their own very bare skin. that's just not me. if you're scheduling a massage, ask for autumn; she was great. actually, the whole staff was very friendly and helpful - happily i saw none of the attitude others reported. i do wish towels were 'unlimited' but i suppose their utility bill would be all the more insane if they were. also, the tea is weird. but given the great 3-hour escape that can be had, it's a fairly frugal spa experience and a fantastic cure for the wet cold portland winters. read more

Surprised my bf with a couple of hours at Loyly on a Friday afternoon. Loved the ease of booking online and browsing a professional website. All the services and prices were simply laid out. They even had their "April Special" (45 minute massage and use of sauna and steam room for $75 per person) listed first on their page. I had been doing some spa shopping and typically "specials" were not advertised upfront which I found ironic. If it's a special, wouldn't a business want to advertise it? I did wish there was an option to book both appointments for the same hour so we could enjoy the steam room and sauna together. Instead, we both had the same LMT (Kim) so we could only have one massage at a time. The charming gentleman that greeted us at check-in explained everything even though he was clearly busy setting up foot soaks and teas for other customers. Always kept a smile and not off-putting juggling his many tasks at the front desk. I'm used to being in a dark room with dark walls and dark covers but this room was well lit with natural lighting and white walls! All my self-conscience anxieties melted away while I was being kneaded away for the next 45 minutes. Kim applied more pressure then I've ever had and at first it was a bit jolting but after a couple of minutes, it felt really relaxing. Meanwhile my bf was enjoying the bottomless tea and VOSS sparkling water (part of the April Special) in between his cold rinses and steams. There was also a cold tub for full soaking but we passed on that. Not quite comfortable yet getting in someone else's bath water. It was mostly women that afternoon but not sure how comfortable I would be changing in a co-ed area had there been more men present. They have 1 bathroom stall you could change in for more privacy which I eagerly used. Their shower products smelled lovely and relaxing. Finally after soaking, rinsing, drying, resting, - repeating, we decided it was time to move on to our next Portland adventure. Upon check-out, we were given some sample bath salts to bring home. Looking forward to enjoying those in my own bath. It's definitely not a huge space but it was quiet and peaceful enough where the mission was accomplished! Excellent service. Self-serve spa. Can buy packages, or memberships. Love the sparse, Nordic modern vibe here. Went for my bff's birthday on an all women Saturday with a steam, foot bath/salt, eye mask, and rinse shower package all for $40. All ages of women, and you don't feel uncomfortable walking around naked. No one cares. The steam closet was overwhelming for me, got a bit dizzy, but I loved the combo of doing that, then going to the cold spray shower right out the door. Envigorating!!! They use exclusively Dr Hauschka products, which is luxury in its self. You get to pick type for face mask and foot bath. I tried the juniper and a type of flower I forgot...holy camoley heavenly. The juniper was vibrant, combined with the mild flower was wonderful. Last you get a small cup of scrub to take shower with. They have complimentary shampoo, etc. I can't believe I got all of this for $40. I would like to go back to get a massage. Delectable!!! read more

Ok, is it just me or what? I mean I just read some nice reviews of Loyly but have to say myself and my friend were sorely disappointed. We booked a massage each but since our times were scheduled back to back we each had to spend about 1 1/2 hours in the spa waiting for our massage. This wouldn't normally be a problem because they have two sauna's, steam and dry but the area they have to rest and wait is incredbily uncomfortable. There is no place to sit except very long narrow benches with no cushion whatsoever and/or a hard wooden picnic table. I opted to do the complete foot soak, scrub with my package to help kill time while I waited for my massage. Sadly, I had to sit on this hard, narrow, wooden bench and soak my feet for half an hour. I was so seriously uncomfortalbe I was in pain. The steam and dry sauna were nice, but I really wish they would add someplace to rest comfortably and possibly recline in between sauna's. I thought the atmosphere was cold and uninviting. I should add that the massages were wonderful and the massage rooms very warm and pleasant. I will not be back. Oh, one more thing that irritated me is that they charge by the minute... if you go over your minute you are charged which really seems silly to me. They should charge a flat fee for the day or by the hour with some sort of grace period. We were rushing to be sure we didn't go over our alloted time so the experience altogether was not relaxing but stressful for us. read more

Just noticed I last wrote a review of Loyly in August of 2009. Yep, I still go! It's still my favorite place to go and relax in the sauna and steam room and get a massage. The boyfriend and I always go together to reconnect. They really are doing something right. My only slight criticism since my last review is that they are starting to get expensive. The rates feel like they are consistently going up and the quality of the massages has gone down a bit. I feel like I'm really only getting about a $60 massage but paying $80. That's really annoying. There are so insanely good therapists there but I'm definitely running into some more mediocre ones. So I'd say get the name of any therapist you like and stick with them! read more

This place is ok, but nothing special. Has steam and sauna. No hot tub, a shortfall. Locker room just ok. Seating for "relaxing" is hard wood lounges without cushions, several of which don't have functioning tilt up back. Food and drinks are available, which is nice. I liked the pricing better than Common Grounds, preferred the experience at CG. I went during the men only session on Sunday, appreciated being able to be clothing optional, seemed more natural. Wish it was that way all the time. I arrived with only about 30 minutes left in mens period, and they "weren't sure they could fit me in." Yet only 2 people were there and later they said I could stay into the mixed gender period if I wore a swimsuit. That's what they should have told me from the start. I will return once more. Parking not horrendous, but not easy. I have only been to the SE location since the NE doesn't have a mens only time slot (they should). read more

I did the August Special - 2 hours in the sauna, a 60 minute massage, a face mask, foot soak, and sparkling water. It was a great deal and definitely worth it! In town from Chicago, I visited Loyly on the recommendation of a friend. The sauna experience at the southeast location was so incredible that I booked a massage at the northeast location a few days later to see how the two compared. You can't go wrong with either spot. The facilities are clean and relaxing. The customer service was amazing. Everything smells beautiful and fresh -- I wanted to bring that scent home with me, so I did! You can buy the products used at Loyly at the front desk. As I write this review, I'm sipping on Loyly's dandelion and burdock root tea and recalling how completely relaxed I felt stepping out of the sauna, dousing myself with cold water and then sitting down with the tea while I basked in the natural light. Terrific value for the price. I might make a return trip to Portland just so I can return to Loyly. read more

I'd like to start out with I had THE best massage from Heather! This place was definitely different. If you're looking for your typical spa with facials and treatment rooms where you are worked on by someone, this is not it. I bought the rejuvenator deluxe massage special for $139. It was a great deal. You get a 90 minute massage, face mask, body salts and foot soak. That's a steal at a normal spa but at Loyly, you apply the mask yourself, a bowl is brought out to you for the foot soak and the body salts you use in the shower locker room style. I went on a day that was women only and there were boobs and other parts everywhere which is totally fine but if you are a very modest person it might not be the best place for you. The coed days everyone is required to wear swimsuits obviously. The place is a bit tiny. I'd definitely be more comfortable if there was more room and I didn't feel like I had to whisper to talk. There's a nice sauna room that we used in between services and then I took about 3 showers there. You're required to take one before you enter the main room and then before my massage I thought it'd be a good idea. This place is more of a self serve spa which I have no problem with. It lends to the good price but was still very nice. It's something I think people should try. I'll definitely be going back. read more
