The old-fashioned cafeteria vibe is always places a toothy grin on my face. As we are "seniors" now, there is always an assistant to carry our trays. The waitress or waiter assigned to us has been consistently Johnny-on-the-spot. Usually we get the fried fish filet (Lu-Ann platter for me). It's a comfortable place with tasty food. You are always a favorite! Since 2010 So, Please expand the menu a little more to include vegan diets. I would arguably say that Luby's has some of the best home cooked dishes you can find in the state of TX. Although, I would love to see a little more inclusion of vegan eaters. Nevertheless, I stopped in for pick up and dine out. The staff was friend as usually, patient and very helpful with questions about the items on the line, which is well lit and the food always looks delicious. I really appreciate this every time. This wasn't a sit down meal today, however the vibe is family, retired and sports team. In short it's never too loud or over crowded in my visits and they have a little something for everyone. I just love Luby's! and the grandkids do , too. Everybody gets exactly what they want so we are all happy. liver and onions is my go to. The turkey and dressing is great. Do I sometimes wish the line would move a little faster? Yes. but it's worth the wait. We went for lunch, and my daughter enjoyed a free kids meal, I asked for jello several times for the kids meal and was told they didn't have any or they don't know. My daughter loves jello, we also noticed they were missing many items at the salad bar, and did not refill the salad bar right away, customers were clearly upset. My daughter was also upset and almost had a temper tantrum ( child is only 2 yrs old) because I promised her jello and they didn't have any. Some ofstaff seemed overwhelmed and unhappy. Our waitress was very polite and sweet she was a great help to us, she was a young lady with long brown hair. We really enjoyed our food today. And I also got a free dessert for my birthday. I was so excited to go to Luby's yesterday after mom's Dr. Appt. Boy was I disappointed. The quality has gone way down. Nothings the same - my usual go-to fried fish and spinach. All I can say is the spinach was good. How hard is it to open a can, though? The bathrooms were filthy and the wait staff was "meh". The place looked clean and the staff was nice. Stopped in and got a Togo meal. Was in the mood for a hamburger steak but walked out with a chicken fried chicken. Becuse the steak looked dry It's over salted which is a shock becuse it's an old persons restaurant. Good Ole Lubys. Never had a bad experience at any location, but I hate barely seeing places like Lubys around. I prefer to eat whole meals, rather than the typical fast food joint. Lubys fish has never let me down. Yams taste like my granny yams with the pecans and added marshmallows, and the mash potatoes and gravy is good as well. I really want to write a love letter to Luby's, but I can't. Chances are if you're reading this review, it's because you've never actually been to Luby's. Which means you didn't grow up in Texas. The Cafeteria restaurant is a Texan institution. It doesn't have the same glory as Tex Mex, Mex-Mex, Vietnamese, Steaks, and Barbecue. But a solid cafeteria can deliver home cooking (at an industrial scale) that it's hard to find elsewhere. There used to be several competing chains of Texas style cafeterias. Not any longer. I just happened to be driving by this location and got a hankering for Chicken Fried Chicken. CFC? It's a chicken breast made in the style of Chicken Fried Steak. CFS? Chicken Fried Steak is our interpretation of Wiener Schnitzel - Breaded Veal Cutlets - where the veal is replaced by beef. CFC + Yams + Macaroni and Cheese (White cheddar, please) + some Iced Tea = happy camper. Luby's rendition of CFC is really good. Right amount batter, good white gravy. The Yams were actual yams, not mashed sweet potatoes, and the Mac and Cheese was on point. Service wise, my waitress refilled my ice tea quite regularly. Decor and Ambiance - Luby's has certainly updated. The Luby's of old was a dark, maroonish, cordoned off image of the 70's and 80's. The new Luby's is the exact opposite. Bright and cheery, open spaces, lots of light, and looks like they imported some staff from Chick Fil A. Lots of families, older folks, and even some young people in the place. Although I very much doubt that the Hipsters will "discover" it. I dropped about 12 on the meal, and was very satisfied for it. read more

Ok, it's Luby's. It's not the greatest place on earth, but for the price, you really can't beat it. For about $14, I got the baked almondine (fish), green beans, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, jalapeno cornbread, and a root beer. And everything tastes pretty decent! I have been to independent chain cafes who have had MUCH worse food. The baked fish was so crispy it tasted fried (which is what I wanted). The green beans were probably canned based on how they're cut, but it's the same thing if you went to Kelley's Country Cookin'. The mashed potatoes were okay with the white gravy (didn't try the brown). The mac and cheese was smooth. I wish there had been more jalapenos in the cornbread, but overall, not bad. For those who have never been, this is a cafeteria-style establishment. Grab yourself a tray and roll of silverware (inside a napkin), and just go down the line. A server comes around and refills your drinks or clears away your dishes. You can get a full combo which is an entree and two sides or a "Luann," which is a half portion, one side, a roll, etc. The latter is great if you have elderly parents. You can take them here and be a good daughter or son. It's not the best food I've ever had, but it's certainly not the worst. Thus, 3 stars it is! read more

This is a great place if you want a long wait for cold mediocre food. The policy of cafeterias to have you pay before eating is ludicrous. I know some people are walkers but the vast majority are honest working people trying to get a hot meal before going back to work. Wow. I grew up going to Lubys and loved it, both the food and the nostalgia of the dining experience from when I was a kid. I hadn't been there in years, but stopped into this location to get lunch. I ordered the trusty fried fish I always have along with a couple sides and a dessert. I was shocked when the total was $24!! The cashier was pretty rude and dismissive when I asked if she was sure. I wasn't rude at all I was just astonished. The food was awful! It was nowhere near edible and certainly not worth the price! The fish was super dry and the strawberry shortcake was stale with doused with a gross strawberry syrup on top with strawberries that had obviously just been unfrozen. I've since heard Luby's has gone downhill fast since they were sold to Pappas....and based on my experience I would definitely agree. read more

I'm giving 5 stars because it's on the top end of what you would expect from a cafeteria style restaurant. The food is good, which is why I keep coming back. One change I wish Luby's restaurants would make is the elimination of the service staff. It's sad, really. I think they depend on tips, yet the way it's set up, you don't really need to be served, so hardly anyone tips them much, if anything. With the success of casual dining over the last few years, I think Luby's would be better off going in that direction. My two cents anyway. read more

Kind of meh. Came for a late lunch and they didn't have any cheese chopped steak. The regular chopped steak was dry. The broccoli rice casserole deviated from the standard recipe. Sadly, the fried okra was the new kind that has mostly cornmeal and accidentally got rolled in with something else that had a sweet flavor. No flan for dessert, wtf? Waited to 11:05 when a worker walked past me, glared at me, didn't say anything and escorted a large group into the line ahead of me. Checkout girl says nothing except "do you have cash for your tip?" Rude staff, except for the ones who refill your glass. Years ago, Lubys had tea cart ladies that circled the dining room refilling glasses. Now you have to flag someone down and tip them to get your water refilled. Let me say from the outset this review applies only to the Luby's Fuqua Rd weekend breakfast buffet. After having driven by this location on several occasions and having noticed it offered a weekend breakfast buffet for $7, I thought why not? First, when you walk in and pick up a tray you're greeted (figuratively speaking) by a wide variety of salad offerings and something which appeared to be potato salad. Forget all of these. They're NOT included in the breakfast buffet spread unless you want to pay extra. Sliding my tray a few feet further down, I was offered a variety of what appreared to be cinnamon bread toast w/ sugar, pancakes, half servings (2 quarter segments) of Belgian style waffles, and French toast. I picked the Belgian waffles but saw no syrup. My server told me the syrup was available near the end of the line. Next up was a selection of pre-cooked omelettes, plain egg, egg w/ crumbled bacon & sausage patties, and egg w/ pico de gallo (aka the well known Southwestern Omlette). Nearby was a plate of biscuits and a large container of sausage gravy. Beyond those were 2 large plates w/ hash brown potatoes and Spanish rice. Other offerings included a pan of refried beans, foil wrapped flour tortillas and two plates with sausage patties and bacon. Several of the sausage patties had been sitting too long under the heat lamp as they were visibly darker and dried out probably with the taste of a hockey puck. Other and fresher patties were coated in a layer of greasy oil. One patty I saw mixed in with the sausage and bacon omlette was a very dark brown, another warning sign of food sitting too long under the heat lamp. Near the end I saw many small black plastic ramekins which initially appeared to be empty. These were individual servings of heated and unheated waffle/pancake syrup filled only about 1/8 of the way full. HINT: 1 ramekin of syrup barely covers 2 quarter segments of Belgian waffles. Grab two instead. The final offerings were a large bowl with a meager 1 oz serving of pre-packaged Kellogg's cereal and a small fruit bowl with 1-2 sliced strawberries plus a tiny chunk of pineapple and peach slices w/ sweet syrup straight out of a can of fruit cocktail. Drinks of course are extra. One small juice dispenser offered orange and apple juice. The machines are common among many restaurants. Don't expect pure orange or apple juice or anything close. To say these "juice" drinks are watered down is an understatement. I opted for coffee, which turned out to be a very bad decision for two reasons. First, Luby's charges $2 more for coffee and, even more important, the coffee served was some of the worst tasting swill I've had since I once ate at a Denny's on Hillcroft. Nothing could fix the taste. It's beyond gross. After having waited...and waited... I flagged down a waitress (is 8:30 am too early for them to take a break?), and exchanged the coffee for a soda drink. Just remember it's the little things, the add-ons, which can jack up your tab. Having sampled most of Luby's breakfast offerings except the refried beans, the clear cut winner in taste was the Spanish rice. My Belgian waffles and omlettes were both crunchy, a sign of sitting out too long. If you pick sausage patties, pick carefully, don't let your server pick ones for you and avoid the stiff blackish brown ones. Be sure to wipe the grease off the others before eating. If you pick an omlette, ask your server to dig into the interior where the eggs remain more moist. My overall impression? Food: C Service: Sluggish, After sitting down, I waited nearly 10 min w/out my coffee, then had to flag down a waitress. D+ Value for the Price: C Watch out for the add-ons. $2 for Luby's coffee is a major rip off. Will I return to this location for weekend breakfast buffet? Highly unlikely. read more

They no longer carry "large" cups to go. Which is kind of dumb. I asked the cashier why & she said, "our manager is too cheap to buy them". (Not kidding. She did say that). I go back a couple days later (today) for some mac and cheese to go & there isn't a cashier at the to go section. There's a sign that reads, "please go through the serving line for your to go order, sorry for the inconvenience" which was annoying since there was a long line & all I wanted was a bowl of Mac and cheese to go. I asked the cashier (different one) why there wasn't anyone attending the to go service and she said it was closed today. I asked if it was ever open & she replied "sometimes". I'm guessing it's hardly ever open because when I went last week there was a man getting food to go in the service line in front of us. Other than that the food is good and so is the service. My parents love coming here and honestly the general atmosphere is very nice. The food is usually cooked right and served hot. Now, I'm 19 and I know that some of these young adults working here hate their job because let me tell you they look and act as if they do. Today our visit was amazing besides the fact that the salad employee looked like she was going to bite my dads head off and she was very rude to him. I didn't tell her anything but I did tell her coworkers that she either needed to change her attitude or just not work there.
