My younger sister bought cookbook with Luby's pie recipes, and made a few of the pies this Thanksgiving! They were great! I got to have original recipes Chess Pie and Pumpkin Pie!!! :) Luby's uses updated or changed recipes, and it's not the same. My mom and had Thanksgiving lunch at Luby's and it was great. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful! Even though the food is served cafeteria style, we tipped. Luby's at DHR Hospital needs dire improvement in their menu and cooking services. The food served does not demonstrate the caliber of food served at an independent Luby's restaurant. Used to frequent Luby's twice per week. Now I return once every six months. Prices skyrocketed. Then they expect you to tip bus folks. No more access to napkins or other necessities without asking a waiter who really isn't a waiter.... it's a cafeteria! Last visit, one couple in front of me in line. I stood at register at least 10 minutes as I watched food get cold. When I finally got to pay, cashier made me wait again as staff was in line getting their discounts. Two managers on duty....oblivious and couldn't care less to open another register. Returned one last time. Sat to eat and veggie soup barely room temp. When I returned it, wasn't even any concerned that the place is serving cold food. Sorry to see the Luby's chain fold, but it is obvious why.....poor management, careless attitudes, hit and miss food quality, etc. Time for the few remaining to close as well. My wife and I joined some good friends here for lunch. We were all hungry, so having a cafeteria style option for food that was hot and ready to serve was a plus. There was just a few people in line ahead of us, so it didn't take long to get to where we could begin choosing what we wanted. There are numerous and varied options from salads, fish (baked, blackened, or fried white fish, catfish, tilapia); roast beef, ham, baked or fried chicken (white or brown gravy), salisbury steak, eggplant parmigiana, chicken fried chicken or steak; and more. Kudos on the variety offered. There are also lots of veggie and starch (potato) choices, rolls or corn muffins, desserts, drinks, etc. The iced tea was fresh brewed. They had a couple of specials that was like a meat with two sides, etc. The dining room was loud which made it difficult to hold a conversation. It looked busy and the servers were running to keep up with filling drinks and cleaning tables. It's definitely NOT a romantic date place but the portions are generous, the food is reasonably good and if you are hungry it's a fairly decent place to go. It's much better than the Golden Corral "feeding trough" in my opinion. One of my sides was a mix of yellow and zucchini squash. It could have been better had it been seasoned and cooked with better consistency: some pieces were mushy while others were virtually raw. My chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, gravy and corn muffins were good and enjoyable. My wife seemed to like the breaded and fried white fish. The ambience is family casual. There are a few booths, but mostly tables. Be prepared to hear a lot of dishes clattering and a few babies crying from time to time. Two at our table waited about 30 minutes before their mac n cheese was delivered (it had run out when we walked through and they offered to bring it to us when it was ready. I didn't get dessert. So no comment there. I didn't check the restrooms, but if the dining room which is out in the open needed attention I would have been wary about entering the restrooms. However when they run out of items it's unfortunate bc it well take awhile before you get a new one. But you must understand that these items are made to be enjoyed fresh. Sometimes the line it's very extremely long, so wear comfortable shoes and be patient. It is worth the wait to have a good dining experience. I enjoy coming to lubys on north tenth bc the other lubys don't take much pride in their product. They are often pushy at rude. However at the north tenth location they will be attentive and very patient to get you what you want. Oh I forgot. The fried fish is DELICIOUS! I usually come in for the holidays and the meals they have is always a special treat. So next time you don't want t cook for the holidays order something to go or dine in. This is a review on the Texas chicken N' Waffle only, available only during breakfast this location in Mcallen on weekends. It's a weekend morning, and my goal and treat to myself for the week was to seek out a chicken and waffle combo. To show you how much of a foodie I am I even went to the length of using google to find out who offered it in the area. Yelp has been acting funny lately, so had to be resourceful. I come across a link that talks about how Luby's is offering a sit down breakfast menu as opposed to the usual cafeteria/buffet style. Included in the menu is Texas chicken n' waffles. Right away, I made it my goal of the week to seek it out I mean its got Texas, chicken, and waffles all in one phrase, what's there not to like? Fortunately, one of the locations they offered this was located in McAllen. NOTE: Not all Luby's offer the sit down breakfast menu. Ambiance: the place is nice with booths and regular tables available as well as Tvs. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. Presentation: As you can see in the pix, the presentation was good. Taste: Hmm....I've eaten a of waffles so I have become particular. The waffle texture seemed to light as if there wasn't enough batter in the mix. The fried chicken was simple and good but not great. I sense that maybe in the rush they didn't let the chicken rest in paper towels before placing on the waffle, since the waffle seemed to have a fried oil taste. The chipotle sauce was good and paired well with the chicken. At $9.99, I felt it could have been better, but based on web link I read, this menu is still on its trial stage, so I hope it improves over time. read more

I didn't really like this place. It may be me but there weren't a lot of food options to be honest and the food items are so overpriced! The food itself wasn't that great either, it was a bit too salty for my taste. The worst part was the actual place itself. It felt like I was at a retirement home, it smelt like wet dog and dirty dishes in there and was one of the main reasons why I couldn't stand to get out of there. We normally have a good experience with Lubys; however, today was an exception. The server when we were getting our food was slow and rude, the soup was not edible and the manager refused to change the channel to cartoons for the kids. Instead we got to watch Fox News as the management said the corporate policy wouldn't let them change it. The location in Mission isn't bound by this "policy" and we will be going back there.
