I specifically requested a stylist who specializes in curly haircuts. When booking the appointment, I asked the receptionist directly if the stylist I was scheduled with specialized in curly hair. I was told yes. When I arrived and checked in, I asked again and received the same confirmation When I met with the stylist, I showed several reference photos, all with the same curl pattern and texture as my hair. I was very clear about what I liked and, more importantly, what I disliked in each photo. Above all, I explained that I was looking for more volume and more layers. It became apparent during the cut that the stylist did not know how to properly cut textured or curly hair and was not truly trained as a curly hair specialist. As the cut progressed, it was clear that my mid-layers were cut significantly shorter than my top layers, creating an uneven shape that did not support curl formation or volume. By the time we got to styling, I was honestly just over it. I left the salon disappointed with the result. I should have spoken up in the moment, but as someone in her mid-40s who has had curly hair her entire life, I know when a stylist simply does not have the training. There is no benefit in critiquing technique that isn't there. Stylists may be taught the basics of cutting curly hair in school, but that does not make them specialists. Curly hair requires advanced training, certifications, and ongoing education. I specifically requested a specialist, and that distinction was not honored. If you have straight hair and are looking for a basic blowout or loose curled blowout, this salon is likely a good fit for you. However, if you have any texture or curl pattern at all, I would strongly recommend avoiding this salon and seeking out a stylist who is truly trained in textured and curly hair. After this appointment, I went to Los Angeles to see my regular curly hair stylist. She had to correct the cut, address the uneven layering, and reshape my hair entirely. The difference was night and day. My curls were defined, clumped, full of volume, and healthy. They were not frizzy. The photos speak for themselves. I'm sharing this to be honest and helpful. Accurate representation of stylist expertise matters, especially for clients with textured or curly hair.

My salon back home was a Filipino place, with a Filipino woman who could cut the crap out of my hair. I'm Mexican, but my hair is very Asian in texture so I prefer Asian salons. I got a perm several months ago and my hair had since grown out and the bottom was heavy with curl and bulk. I needed to have it thinned out and trimmed. I saw the good reviews on Yelp and the salon is just a few minutes from home, so I decided to give it a try. I called at 8 a.m. on Saturday and they fit me in for a 10:30 a.m. appointment the same day. I saw three other clients and all were elderly women, but whatever. Paula sat me down in her chair and wet my hair with a spray bottle. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and then described it to her again, and she was off. She used a razor cutter, which I took as a good sign because that's generally how my hair is cut. I'll admit, it felt so nice to have my hair cut, I sat most of the time with my eyes closed. I opened them at one point and my hair was looking good -- it was the right length and I could see the bulk was gone. I closed my eyes again and she kept cutting. I felt her cutting higher, but assumed she was just putting in the layers I asked for. When she announced she was done, I opened my eyes to see she had taken off 4-5 inches of my hair and left me with some sort of weird wavy boy mullet. My shoulder-length hair was now chin-length. I didn't know what to say as there wasn't a lot to be done at that point and I just wanted to get home and inspect what had happened on my head. The cut was only $20 and I still tipped her, but I ran out and came home a bit upset at my new haircut. My boyfriend assured me it looked great, but that's just because boyfriends are supposed to say that. Luckily I'm actually pretty skilled with a razor cutter myself, so I pulled mine out and went to work fixing my hair. 30 minutes later I'd cut off the weird mullet in the back and cut off most of the wave and I was left with a haircut I really liked and one that looked nothing like the 80s male figure skater look Paula gave me. She did do a wonderful job on my bangs, so I'll give her two stars. However, the only reason I like my haircut today is because I fixed it myself and made it into something cute. Maybe it was my wavy, permed hair that thew her off, but regardless I won't be going back for another cut. I'll either maintain this cut myself or find a new salon when I want something different. She was a very nice lady and I know she can cut hair, she just had bad luck with mine.
