I've loved Lucerne for over 20 years -- it's a place that holds childhood memories for me, so it's hard to write this update, but I want to be honest and fair. I stopped in again this past Tuesday, and the experience was very different from what I've always known here. The service was unfortunately very rushed and inattentive. We had hoped to dine in, but our food was packed to-go without asking. My sandwich was bland, and even though the cashier asked for my full order, parts of it still came out incorrectly. I know Cuban bakery culture is fast-paced and "grab and go," but this time it felt like because we weren't regulars, we didn't receive the same warmth or care. At one point, I even felt like the cashier was worried I might walk out without paying -- an uncomfortable feeling I've never experienced here before. They seem to be renovating, and I truly hope it's just growing pains, but things felt disorganized. Someone was offered an item from a handwritten menu, only for another staff member to say it had actually been removed. The digital menu wasn't fully updated either, which added to the confusion. It honestly makes me sad to write this, because Lucerne has always been a special place to me and my family. I'm really hoping they find their footing again after the renovations and get back to the level of quality, flavor, and warmth that made this bakery such a treasure for so many years. read more

I have come to this bakery, at least six times and my six months of being in Miami, but it is absolutely phenomenal and everything is so so so good and everything does taste so authentic I've gotten an assortment of pastries from there such as a coconut pastry like guava cheese pastry, and I've also got their croquettes And I've had their café con leche and I swear to God no one does it better than them. Also, the prices are amazing. You can literally get a coffee for under three dollars and you can get some of these things for under two dollars as well, which is really unheard of in Miami. Lucerne has been our family's go-to bakery for decades. I love it here, and it's one of the few Cuban bakeries that hasn't changed their recipes (not too much, anyway). The pastelito de carne is still scrumptious, and the pastelito de guayaba still uses real guayaba and not that neon pink nastiness. Some of the other less popular pastelitos leave something to be desired, but the pillowy soft and warm fresh baked pan cubano more than makes up for it. read more

Walked into the bakery at 6:35 PM and asked the lady for a steak sandwich. she tells me that they had ran out of bread and there was no steak sandwiches. so she sees me looking at the grill on the end of the corner and there's a stack of bread cut which I know they use that for bread and butter, but it's the right bread for the right sandwich so she tells me well,The grill is on, but that bread is not good for that and I guess she must've saw I had stupid written all over my face so unfortunately I did order something else, but I left really pissed off. Leaving Miami and we wanted to take home some sweet treats. This place was around the corner from our air bnb. We left on a Saturday around 11:00 am, the line was still good length and seemed like people that go all the time as the were in conversations with each of the staff. We got cafe con Leche (it really is a must in Miami), it's so good (even with it's a thousand degrees outside) We got guava and cheese patries (the dough... mmmm, you could tell the dough was handmade... so flaky and buttery, but not messy) - I actually just ate the last one a week later and it was still really good! We got some cookies (not sure what they were but they were crumbly and buttery), they were PERFECT!!! The ladies at the counter were all really nice and the store was really clean! Ok, so I am a tostada connoisseur. I get them everywhere I go. Now, as simple as this treat is, it's actually quite hard to find a good one these days. They are either over toasted and on the burnt side, not buttered enough, or under toasted and cold. The struggle is real. In steps Lucerne. An unsuspecting location. No frills. And hands down the BEST tostada in town. I'm obsessed with it. It's perfectly toasted, perfectly buttered. Drool worthy. The cafe con leche was also good. Service is polite and efficient. What a gem! It's not hectic, every time I go to CAO, Versailles, Vicky's bakery- it's MAYHEM. Lucerne is calm, clean and the staff is sweet and very patient. The baked goods are FRESH! Never stale! I was driving by, on the way to Walmart. I saw the very austere and understated storefront. Lucerne Bakery. I looked at Pattie, and I said...no marketing and a full parking lot. We must go. Cute and friendly counter staff joked around with us as we perused the options. I ordered every option of empanada. They were baked, with the flakiest pastry and delicious fillings. My favorite was the spinach and cheese. Pattie liked the beef. I ordered every option of the croqueta. So flavorful. Explosions with every bite. Could not leave without an eclair and some other Napolean-like pastry. Both outstanding. Now...I'm an Italian in Miami, so that makes me half-Cuban. This was my favorite empanada, hands down...and I'm a big Graziano Plum and Bacon empanada fan. I have to imagine I'm late to this Lucerne party, but you don't be. Go there and dive in. People need to come to this bakery because I like it. In a city where everyone has a saying about who has the best pastelito, Lucerne Bakery certainly has a spot among the top. If you are wondering what type of pastelito is good enough to travel and find it, well, let me say a couple things about this place. First off, Lucerne Bakery doesn't have two glass counters full of Cuban pastries. It is a modest bakery. Also, they don't have a whooping array of pastelitos, only the basic guava, guava cheese, meat, cheese. Next to those, papa rellena, croquetas, empanadas, and empanada gallega. And, there are no tequeños or pan de bono on display. Since they are a bakery, and not just a window, there's a couple more counters with desserts, cakes, Cuban sandwiches and media noches, and other pastries. And of course Cuban bread, crackers, etc. So, why Lucerne. Simple, they sell those guava and cheese pastelitos that look like a basket. Not the triangular or square ones, the basket ones, which happen to be my favorite. Also, all the pastelitos are fresh. No matter what time a day. Pair that with some coffee, or a soda, and your day will be a lot better. But, there is one more thing that makes Lucerne Bakery a hit. There is little foot traffic here. You come in, get your stuff, and get out, unlike the other bakeries where is just fifteen minutes to order. And it may be this way because there is no seating at this bakery, and the abuelas and abuelos don't lounge here. Now, don't think this is the best pastelito in the world, or that this is the best bakery in the world either, but if you like pastelitos and you are always looking for some good ones, stop by. Also, this place is not a social hub, but if you need a coffee and a snack, drop by. But most important, if you are in a hurry, or if you are not looking to drop coin, get out of your car and come in. There is nothing hip about this place, and you'll love that. read more

We always buy the platters of 25 cheese, and guava pastellitos with the bocaditos and croquetas and it's always a huge hit at any event. The Cuban bread is the BEST in Miami and the most important feature of this bakery is that they ensure the FRESHEST products. The BEST bakery in Miami! I have been coming here my entire life and have never ever ever been disappointed. I swear by my life that this place has the FRESHEST pastelitos, croquetas, Cuban bread, etc in all of Miami. I don't really know how else to put it. This is my favorite bakery in West Miami. Be sure that you get in early to avoid the large crowd! Also after 11am pastellitos are slim pickings. Signature pastellito de pizza is a must and so are the guyaba y Queso. As for the staff they are not too attentive and don't make an effort to know the regulars. Don't expect a smile accompanied by "buenos dias" because they really don't care lol. There's no number system to see who's next. You've got to be on top of it (beware) of the skippers. Hate to have negativity in my review, but MY FAVORITE BAKERY has crappy customer service. I still buy their baked goods and enjoy them. Of course if they worked on customer service I would give them all 5 stars. So if you love a buttery flakey abundantly filled pastry and don't mind nonchalant customer service. Some of the best, if not the best, pastelitos in the city of Miami. The owner has been here for close to 40 years and brought all his recipes from Cuba. It's a no-frills place. You probably need to speak Spanish to order. There is no line or ticket system. The focus is on quality and consistency. I've been coming since I was a kid and not much has changed here in all those years. Now as a professional chef, I can appreciate just how good the quality here is. Everything is made fresh daily. The pastry dough is made from scratch, the bread has only 3 or 4 ingredients. The pastry dough actually rises and flakes properly, unlike other bakeries in town that use frozen commercial doughs and do not cook it at a right temperature, leaving you with raw indigestible dough.
