Spicy California Roll
Dexter D.

This review is for the in-house sushi only. We had heard that Lucky had fresh Dungeness Crab in stock for $4.99lb. We were in the area so we decided to take a look. While we were in the store, I saw the sushi and wanted to satisfy my craving for a California Roll. I know that supermarket sushi is rarely as good as what one gets from a sushi-ya, but hey, I'm after a California Roll. These weren't even invented in Japan but up in Seattle, Washington by Tojo. Anyway, what they had on offer looked okay so I got a package of Spicy California Roll. 15 npieces for only $6.25? Can't go wrong there. And there was even an employee making sushi behind the counter. She smiled and greeted me and then thanked me when I made a selection. Flavor wise, it was a California Roll painted with both a spicy sauce and probably Unagi sauce. It was mildly spicy and sweet at the same time. It tastes fresh and satisfied my craving perfectly. The one downside was how the roll was cut. In order to fill out the tray with 15 pieces, they had to be cut very thinly. If presentation affects how a dish is received, the solution to improving this tray is quite simple. Cut 12 pieces instead of 15 and fill out the dead space in the tray with the packet of soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger.

I don't go into grocery stores very often. I mostly shop at Costco, Concord Produce, and online food markets. However, sometimes the deals at Luckys are too good to pass up, and this is my favorite location to find them at. Employees are always happy to help you find something, and everything is usually well stocked and organized. We went in on Father's Day to get some $0.50 oysters to BBQ and they happened to be out of them, (a nice gentleman employee walked back and double-checked for me) but they gave me a rain-check and I bought lobster tails for $6 each instead! Self-check always seems to be in working order and I get just as good customer service there as I do in the other check-stands, and there lines aren't ever bad either. This is such a great store - glad it's close to home.

Well here you are, looking at Alpine Pastry and Cakes. Is this place good? Do I take a chance?…read more Will I be disappointed? Yes, it is very good Yes take a chance. You will not be disappointed. My wife and son are dessert snobs. Both have been to Paris and say France has the best pastries. But wait, they just came back from Alpine, and what did they say???? DELICIOUS!! They were smiling from ear to ear! They bought a carrot cake and an assortment of fresh and tasty pastries. And they even let me have a bite. It was so good! Sooooo, yes, try them. We've all had crappy deserts before. Move up to the big leagues and give Alpine a try!

Oh I hate to do this because they have done cakes for me in the past, but the call I just got off…read moreof was SUPER unpleasant. I called in today to see if they could decorate a faux cake for me. Not only was she rude, but she told me she would charge me AS MUCH AS SHE WOULD for a real cake. You mean to tell me it would cost me $100 plus to decorate a piece of Styrofoam? And then, when I told her the shape of the Styrofoam, she flat out said no. As if the shape of the Styrofoam changes the action? And I'm not a baker, at least not a professional one, but something feels off about what feels like the refusal to help me. And it's not like I am looking for free service, I'm willing to pay, but I'm not willing to pay cake prices for icing on Styrofoam. Saying no, as a business is OK, I'm all for it. But customer service needs a serious rebranding. I have never had a good in person/over the phone experience. Their food speaks for itself, but the customer service skills really takes away the value of a local business that has been around for years. I hope whoever I spoke on the phone with has a better day

My only concern is that the internet seems to go down fairly often. We've experienced it several times over the past few months. Other than that, the overall experience has been very positive.

What Happened to the Choco Bun?…read more Plenty of free parking. When you walk in, grab a tray and window shop all the pastries. They individually wrap these so grab what you want and place it on your tray. Once you're finished, cruise up to the counter. Would I Come Back? Yes, I keep coming back. I use to come back for the Choco Bun, but if they've changed the recipe at all locations, I'll only be coming back for the Milk Bun and Nougat. Their Signature Item: Egg tarts are their signature item. If you've ever been to an Asian party, someone almost always brings a box of egg tarts from 85-Degrees. But on today's visit. Well, just look at the photo. Someone stepped away from the oven for about 6 minutes too long. Choco Bun ($2.55, Grade D): The Choco Bun has been my absolute go-to for years--the closest location to me is usually the South Sacramento store and I tell everyone they have to get it whenever they visit an 85°C. Unfortunately, it's been about 8 months since my last trip, and the Choco Bun is no longer something to write home about. Milk Bun ($2.05, Grade A+): If you've ever had their Milk Bun with the custard filling, the Choco Bun used to be very similar in texture. Now, it's flat with super dry edges. Not good at all. Luckily, I also bought a Milk Bun (my usual second favorite), and by default, it's now my number one because the Choco Bun was a complete bust. It's so fluffy and sweet. Melts in your mouth. Strawberry Banana Smoothie / no boba ($5.85, Grade F): It was incredibly artificial-tasting--nothing real about it. I only made it through a quarter of it before throwing the rest into the garbage. My fault for hoping for a "just picked" fresh fruit taste, but this was honestly one of the worst smoothies I've ever had. Nougat ($9.60, Grade A+): The bagged Nougat candy is fantastic. It's soft, gooey, and packed with what I'm guessing are pieces of pistachio. Delicious, but a fair warning if you have dental issues: these will wreak havoc on your teeth. It's not quite as sticky as a Starburst, but it could definitely pull out a denture! Bottom Line: The staff here is friendly, and there are still a few standout 5-star items that make a visit worth it (the Milk Bun and the Nougat). However, the disappointing recipe change to the Choco Bun and the absolute miss on the smoothie knock this down to a 3-star experience overall.

There is plenty of parking around. The store is small and clean. The staff is very friendly. The person who helped me answered my questions and described the cookies' flavor. I came with my family and I ordered 4 cookies: -Brown Butter Pecan 5/5: their number one seller and I can see why! Thin, soft, and loaded with buttery goodness in every bite. -Banana Pudding 5/5: This cookie surprised me. It was amazing! -Birthday Cake 4/5: This was a good cookie. It tasted just like a slice of birthday cake. -Tea Cake 3/4: This was my least favorite. The person who helped me described it as a Madeline flavor and it does taste like one. However, the cookie is very dense, which is why I didn't like it as much. Overall, the cookies are delicious and it is exciting to have such a great place nearby!
