It's not too sweet; rather, it all felt balanced. However, this is a VERY messy donut; I recommend eating this donut with a fork and knife. The powder fall everywhere, and your clothes can quickly get stained with chocolate powder. Still, it's a delicious pastry. On ambiance, Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel) is comfortable. This business is more reminiscent of a cafe than a typical donut shop. There's customer internet with password; details on the counter. There's a gender neutral restroom. The man behind the counter spoke with me using Cantonese, and once the order was placed worked deftly to package all the pudding into plastic to-go containers along accompanied with six smaller containers full of ginger syrup. Expertly, the plastic bags also had a cardboard as a base for the containers to minimize the chance of spillage. When I mentioned wanting to use a credit card, he balked at the idea since there's a surcharge, but I laughed and said it was okay. Visit early since lots of items are sold out after a while.
