Lucky's is Malibu does Rick's Cafe Americaine sans Dooley Wilson at the piano. Everyone in the place was a regular (and hopefully regular next morning) with such a meaty menu. The decor is woody, clubby, chummy, jazzy and buzzy and not no one there bashful about being pricey. Think the Palm with a clean floor. Sit outside or inside, pick your space where everyone can see your face when you make that flamboyant grand entrance trying not to be recognized. The Staff: All used to the ladies who lunch until dinner. Used to the trust funders, the pairs of heirs, along with the makers, shakers and fakers that hang here. The server team is absolutely professional. They are all helpful, tuned to each table's wants and needs and genuinely enjoyably enthusiastic. Laura was a charming delight and added to the whole experience. Who goes there? See above and then add real players, and a sprinkle of small players playing at being players. "Hey Shhh! It's my agent. Uh huh! Really? No more than scale? I'll take it". The Bar Program: Spirited. Name it, they'll pour it. Signature cocktails you can recognize without referring to the Periodic Table. Have a Paper Plane with just enough bitterness to remind you that most of that tangy pucker is mostly caused by seeing your ex at the Bar. My Whiskey Sour was text book Master Class good. And my Dirty Martini was worthy of Peter Luger and just right for having that meat neat. The Food: Think Daily Grill on steroids. Chops and Steaks with some lighter fair for those who were hoping to go to Nobu. The Calamari Fritti with Cocktail Sauce and a Sriracha Aioli with fresh Lemon was a lovely Squid Game. Crisp and tender as they should be. The "Signature" Chili was an escapee from Outback Steakhouse. That was an eyeball order. It came with some decent cornbread but Dave Chasen would have turned over in his grave and farted had he tasted this sad bowl. It just takes up valuable real estate in your stomach so I say pass. The Lucky Salad was a cold one. The Roquefort Dressing was creamy. The Romaine just picked, the Bacon bits were smoky and crisp and the scattering of Shrimp were cruise ship midnight buffet fresh. All things considered I should have listened to the Caesar hailing me. They had me at Bacon and Shrimp in the same forkful. The salad does get passing marks. My New York Pepper Steak with Cognac Cream Sauce was fitting. Which I can't say about my jeans at the end of that meat orgy. The Steak had its tough moments. Small bites cut across the grain helped. The Double Cut Colorado Lamb Chops were bahhh'd to the bone. They were excellent. Juicy, lamby, without being gamey and topped with a nice herby crunch. I was all over the Lamb in a socially appropriate way. I passed on the Romanian Steak. "It's really heavily marbled" whispered Laura. (Read fat.) "And very tasty", she said. Yeah, because it's buried in Butter, Garlic and Chili Sauce. Hmm...save that one for Donald and Melania when they stop by. The Sides: Steamed Spinach was, well, steamed spinach. Not a first date choice. The Hash Browns with Gruyere Cheese was simply dreadful. Glop au Gratin. Gluey and phooey. The mountain of Fried Skinny Onion Strings required a construction permit. They were magical and stayed crunchy to the last crispy thread. Your just Desserts: The Molten Chocolate Cake was a throwback to the 60's where it should've stayed. Located in the Malibu Country Mart, a few steps away from the playground, SunOrganics and Taverna Tony. It occupies the space that the former Mr. Chow held. This restaurant has been modernized with new pitched ceilings and an outdoor patio for added seating. There's ample free parking with the lot close by. Lucky's is part of a Montesano Group that own and manage similar restaurants, 2 in Montecito and 2 in Santa Barbara, and this Malibu location offers the same upscale casual dining menu with great wine and cocktails too. While I have dined in the restaurants up north, this was my first visit here. On weekends, Lucky's opens earlier; 10am for brunch, while the other beach front restaurants nearby open much later. Indoor and outdoor seating is limited, so reservation is advised. Like most places here, reasonable casual attire is acceptable. The brunch menu offers something for every diet, but keep in mind their forté are steaks, seafood and cocktails, therefore, we ordered accordingly. I initially ordered tofu and veggies, but later added a petit filet oscar, as they say, 'You must do as the Romans when in Rome,'...ie it's a steak house so, order steak! The food, drinks and service was excellent. I would frequent more regularly if this restaurant was located on the beach with unobstructed ocean views, like it's competitors Mastro's, Moonshadows, and Nobu, where I frequently dine. Because a trip to Malibu for dining without direct ocean views is not as magical. That missing magical factor might have contributed to the demise of the previous restaurant. With the nice chic interior dining, the outdoor patio with high green wedges offers some privacy to enjoy the phenomenal steaks, seafood, drinks and desserts to have diners as regulars and be fortunate and LUCKY on a long stay in the Bu, Malibu. Hubby & I spent our July 4th weekend in Malibu. We decided to book Lucky's for an early dinner. Parking: the lot is usually very busy during the weekend. Suggest that you arrive at least 30 mins before your booking to find a spot. Service: our server was pretty attentive. Seating: most customers prefer to sit at the patio area. The restaurant cramped a lot of tables together. The table for 2 was squeezed in between 2 tables for 4. Food: -Lucky's Chopped Salad: very clean dish with just lemon as the dressing. -NY Strip: hubby likes his steak medium rare but it came out overcooked. Hubby isn't the type of person to complain about his food. -Salmon: one half of the salmon tasted the way I liked it (not fully cooked), but the other half was literally raw. By the time I got to the raw part of the Salmon, I didn't feel right to address it to the server. So I squeezed my lemon over it to finish my dish. -Sauteed Spinach: the side was a pretty decent size. Lucky's is delicious! My husband and I had a date night at luckys last year and we enjoyed our meal! I didn't rate it 5 stars because we brought a bottle of wine and the server didn't know how to uncork. The bottle was very nice so they had to have someone else in the back open but they still messed up the cork which meant we were pulling cork out of our wine all night. I have a new favorite steakhouse. I am headed back again this weekend... much more to follow! Leadership is everything and the exceptional example followed by the entire Lucky's staff is set by the General Manager, Kenichi Ozawa. The second manager, Angel Silva, is kind, thoughtful and doesn't miss a thing. Every diner is made to feel like family, and every meal is crafted/tailored to be especially for that table. The service at Lucky's is without peer. The staff know the menu like the back of their hands, can describe with ease the nuances of each and every dish, and completely lack the snotty "you don't deserve to be here" pretentiousness you find at a NOBU, Gjelina, Cut or Bouchon. The staff is welcoming, helpful, informative and attentive without being in any way intrusive. While they are all first rate, my personal favorites are James and Heather. Now to the food! I have yet to taste the entire menu, so please don't interpret my omission of a dish as criticism! Starters/Sides Tuna Tartare -- a perfect balance of tastes and textures. Fresh chopped tuna sandwiched around a layer of fully ripe avocado served with crispy chips. Fried Calamari -- crispy on the outside and moist on the inside served with dipping sauces. Skinny Onion Rings -- a heaping plate full of thin crisp onion rings dipped in a savory batter and fried to crunch playfully in the mouth when chewed. Herbie's Potato Skins -- while I do not know who Herbie is, I know his potato skins are a plateful of crispy delights that demand you leave your knife and fork tucked under your plate and revisit the joys of your childhood dipping and gleefully biting... just be sure to ask for extra sauces to avoid double dipping! Main Courses As of yet, I am still working my way through the steaks and have not tasted any of the chicken, seafood and veggie dishes. The steaks I have tried are the filet, petite filet, porterhouse and grass fed filet special. I look forward to expanding the list over the coming weeks since each and every one was tender, flavorful and cooked exactly as ordered. My favorite so far? I had first seen Luckys on social media and wanted to try it real bad. So when I had a reason to celebrate something, I made reservations via open table and headed over with my family. We were promptly seated in the heated patio. The aesthetics and overall Decor drew us in deeper and the excellent service they have. We were given menus (kids menus too which was great) and ordered our drinks and food. I got the Heat on Beach and wife ordered a cosmo. We ordered the tuna tartar to start. I was craving a steak salad and ordered that. It was delicious, sauced right and cooked to perfection. Also ordered creamed corn as a side, finished off with the turtle sundae. I'm no stranger to expensive restaurants and outrageous pricing due to location and other aspects but Lucky's is really pushing it. I've dined as five star restaurants all over the world over the years with better pricing! $6 for a lemonade for my child, $34 for appetizer Tartare (fairly small portion), $18 for chicken fingers and fries (did not taste good, tasted more like fish). My steak salad was $36, $14 for a side of mashed potatoes, $16 for a small Caesar salad, $14 for a plain baked potato and $15 for creamed corn. It just didn't feel right for such simple food that didn't taste amazing. I'm not sure if I'd return to Lucky's. The plaza was crowded and parking wasn't fun either but I did get "Lucky" with that aspect. It was good. $34 for Tuna Tartare - way too much money. $25 for Fried Calamari - too much. $25 for Burrata Salad - way tooo much. $82 for 10oz Filet?? If you are going to ask for $82, make sure it is the best meat. It was not the best meat. The ambiance was no big deal. The service we got deserves 5 starts. That is why I tipped 30%. I know I am in Malibu. I eat in Malibu every week. I know prices. I also eat in Beverly Hills and Bel Air. And I do pay more. But, it has to be worth it. This place is unjustifiably over priced. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday after seeing it on Eater's 18 Best New Restaurants for June. The original location is in Montecito, near Santa Barbara, and I can see Lucky's fitting in perfectly with Malibu locals. Located in the Malibu Country Mart, the restaurant doesn't have an ocean view, but it still "exudes SoCal cool with white tablecloth finesse" (Eater) and best of all, has plenty of free parking! We had my dog with us and were told that it was no problem as they have an outdoor patio. I think it was full and we had reservations, so they sat us inside which was a pleasant surprise. My Pomeranian has never dined indoors and because we were given a half-booth table, she could sit next to me comfortably, rather than sadly on the floor begging to be closer to me. So many staff came up and told me how cute she was and our server even offered a water bowl for her. I love that they're so dog-friendly! For our appetizers, we got half a dozen oysters ($30), fried calamari ($22), and macaroni and cheese ($15). We shared a 10 oz Filet Mignon Pepper Steak ($80) with cognac peppercorn cream sauce and paired it with hashed browns with gruyere cheese ($18), skinny onion rings ($15), and fresh creamed corn ($15). Mostly everything was great, my favorites being the mac and creamed corn. We killed both. The only thing we didn't care for was the hashed browns. It was soft, flavorless, and dull, so we added more salt & pepper, which didn't really make it better. All the appetizers and sides come in shareable portions, which is great for groups dining family-style. It was just the two of us though, so we had to pack the majority of it home. I actually give the food a solid 4-stars, but the service and staff are what pushed me to give Lucky's 5-stars. Other than not refilling my water glass once in a timely manner, the service was perfect. We weren't given a dessert menu, but they gave us a complimentary crème brûlée to celebrate my birthday, which was so sweet! While it was one of the best crème brûlées I've had, I would've liked to choose my dessert as I've read their molten chocolate cake is one of the best. We got the Caesar salad, filet mignon with cognac peppercorn sauce and a side of horseradish (amazing), mushrooms, Mac & cheese, sautéed spinach, and molten cake. Maybe it's because I'm a big wine person but I would've love to see a more extensive wine list. However if you're a big Napa cab person you will not be disappointed. All in all a nice restaurant. My wife and I have been wanting to try Lucky's for the last year or so. When my folks came to town to visit, it was the perfect excuse to drive up the coast and spend a bit too much on brunch, so we booked a reservation and headed to Malibu. Our experience was mixed. The Good: While I wouldn't normally spend $29 on a shrimp cocktail, it really was quite good. Four of the biggest shrimp I've ever seen were served with a tasty cocktail sauce and an additional side of fresh horseradish. It was among the best I've ever had, but certainly not worth the $$. They brought a complementary plate of tiny pastries, all of which were tasty, and it was just enough for the four of us to share and get a chance to try all of them. Nice touch. When we asked our server how big the side of french fries, he said, "You can def share them." Love it. The Bad: We were seated at a table that was tucked away in a corner, right next to where servers enter in orders. Quiet, yes. But it felt like we were in a back room. The bathrooms were pretty gross. It was 11:45am on a Sunday at a relatively nice/pricey restaurant. They should be clean. They weren't. Like...really weren't. In the end, Lucky's was okay. Our waitress name was Paige and the gentleman helping her (I can't remember his name) we're both INCREDIBLY nice.
