Believe the hype! First time at this Nobu and this was my first impression. Pros: very Island like with the breeze from the ocean. Casual attire, in despite many said including their website no open-toed shoes for men. I saw plenty of men with their toes out. Very cool vibes. First time at Nobu and it didn't not disappoint. We celebrated my wife's birthday and she loved it. Great atmosphere and food. We sat outside the patio and ocean views were amazing. Plenty of memorable photo-op moments. Though it was slightly chilly, there were plenty of heaters to keep us comfortable. Service was impeccable, staff was friendly and attentive. The bottle of Matsuhisa Cabernet Sauvignon set event in motion. Did not know he had his own bottle of wine. Excellent bold red wine with nice smooth, fruit-forward finish. We ordered a variety of cold dishes. The Yellow tail jalapeno was terrific and so refreshing. Highly recommend! Both crispy rice with spicy tuna and wagyu & tuna tacos were good, but nothing to write home about. Nigri Bluefin Toro was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The texture was incredibly tender and buttery. Both salmon and tuna sushi were on point as well. Freshness is key. Their signature Black Cod with Miso was stellar and flavorful. A bit on sweeter side in good way. Unfortunately, they were out of Rock Shrimp Tempura, but had the Cod Tempura instead, which we thought was just okay. We got a variety of meat dishes - Ribeye with Truffle Butter, 16oz Prime New York Strip and 6oz Wagyu. Of course, wagyu was everyone's favorite, followed by ribeye which was tender and delicious. Crispy Brussels Sprouts was underwhelming and lacking presentation. It looked a bit mashed up and overcooked. Roasted cauliflower was a nice side dish to accompany our meal. We ended the evening with desserts and got date cake; and bento box which is dark chocolate cake and matcha ice cream. OMG date cake was surprisingly good! It was gone in seconds soon as it arrived. For one, it's beautifully located on PCH and they have the best sunsets as it's beachside.We came in a big group to celebrate our friend's birthday. She made the reservation and as a large group they were able to accommodate us with an indoor table. Surprisingly, if one or a few cancel last minute there are no cancellation fees unless the whole group forfeits without early notice. I thought this was a plus. Overall, I've been to several Nobu locations globally. This one was one of the most charming and perfect date night, love a coastal scenery. It does get quite busy, it's recommended to make a reservation. Nobu Malibu is honestly all about the location. Being right on the beach gives it such a nice vibe, especially with the indoor-outdoor setup. Sitting outside in the dining area is my favorite spot the ocean view alone makes the experience. Reservations can be hard to get, but honestly every time I've gone we've just popped in, hung out by the bar, and eventually gotten a table. It does get busy, and valet is pretty much the move here. The food is what you expect from Nobu pricey, but always fresh and consistently good. Not much to complain about there. The tacos are all delicious (tuna, white fish, wagyu ribeye and caviar), are always a hit. Drinks are great too, and lately I've been getting the strawberry cheesecake for dessert, which is sooo good. You'll almost always see a celebrity here (not something I personally care about), but if you're trying to impress out-of-town guests, this is definitely the place. For comparison, my second favorite Nobu location is Newport Beach it feels more chill with a DJ and slightly less fancy compared to Malibu. Overall, Nobu Malibu is worth it for the views, vibes, and consistently good food. The ambience was beautiful, you can hear the waves and the breeze felt nice on the outdoor patio. We got reservations for 8pm and they did a good job of keeping the guest warm outside. However, one thing that bothered my husband was that the tables were not flat to the ground. Meaning if we leaned too hard on one side, the table would tip or lean. For how much you're paying here, to have the tables quality be like this was a bit off putting. It also felt very cramped. The table next to me was soo close I couldn't really move back my chair to get up. It felt like they were trying to squeeze as much tables as possible, to get more people there at a time. Service: undesirable. Took too long for them to refill my water glass. At that point I had to just ask a staff for still bottled water. The waiter also seemed to have forgotten our table as it took a while for them to even hand us menus. This is a big reason why the stars are low. Food: yellowtail jalapeño (2/5) was too salty. Miso soup (5/5) the tofu tasted very good. Black cod (4/5) I noticed there was a fish bone sticking out. Luckily I saw it before I ate it. It could have been dangerous, this was another reason this place lost a star. Crispy rice and sushi were good quality and good overall, no complaints there. Overall I left feeling very disappointed. For the price you're paying and the effort it took for me to make a reservation, the presentation of food and service was not good. I've been to a lot of sushi-focused, high-priced places in the OC, and I can tell you at least 5 different places with the same quality, better service and better value. Came here to celebrate my sister's birthday recently! Food: Everything was definitely fresh. I can see why the Miso Black Cod is a fan favorite. The fish is made to perfection. It was so flavorful and melts in your mouth. While I am not a fan of raw fish, my sister loved the yellow tail. It was not fishy at all and very fresh. My second favorite item from our order, surprisingly, is the fried okra! It was so addicting to munch on while waiting for our main courses. We also ordered the California roll (forgot to photograph). I did not feel there was anything special with that. I've had better California rolls at many other places. The rock shrimp.. although is another fan favorite, I did not like too much. It tasted alright at best to me. The flavors did not mix that well in my opinion. Dessert was a form of lava cake. It was decent. Service: The waiters are very attentive. Two of them even offered to take photos for us, which was very kind of them! They were good at recommending items and took their time with us. Parking: It was a $15 valet parking! Very easy and not too stressful. Overall: The view of the ocean where we were sat was beautiful. The restaurant was lovely inside and out. The restroom had a huge mirror, which is perfect for makeup touch ups. We told the waiter we were celebrating a birthday, and they wrote happy birthday on the dessert we ordered. Top tier Nobu restaurant! We went here for lunch right at 12pm on a Tuesday and it was still crazy busy. We joined a line to check in around 11:55am but since we had reservations and specifically asked for outside patio, they were able to honor it (no guarantees though). We were sat right directly at the waters, out of the crowds. I'd imagine walking in is possible but you may only settle for indoors, which shaves off a bit from the experience. We got a masu nigori sake which is served in a box. For appetizer, we got the monkfish pate with caviar which is quite unique and has a bit of wasabi flavor from the sauce. It's very elegant. We also got the house special cut sushi which had a variety of fresh sashimi inside, and very easy to take bites from the seaweed based on texture. For the main, we got the famous miso black cod. The meat is so juicy and smooth, just that it is a bit on the sweeter side for me. It's still delicious and well worth the hype, especially given the portion size for the price tag. For dessert we got the Qui Espresso which is a tequila version of espresso martini and it's fairly unique since it uses oat milk. We enjoyed it. Price wise it is very spendy but also the service and quality match. Service is great as they check up on you regularly and make sure to top off our water cups so we are never dehydrated. read more

Was super excited to stop by for dinner, and this place absolutely delivered. It's definitely a high end sushi spot, from the stunning views to the beautiful interior. The whole atmosphere felt elevated but still comfortable. The staff were incredibly welcoming from the moment we walked in, and after confirming our reservation, we were seated right away. Overall, it set the tone for a really great dining experience. Be prepared to spend a bit, as the dishes are on the pricier side, but everything we tried felt worth it. We ordered a variety of dishes to sample, and there were so many standouts. The spicy edamame was packed with flavor, and I appreciated the extra bowl for the shells. The seafood ceviche was fresh and perfectly balanced. I only wished the portion was bigger because it was that good. The sashimi salad was incredibly fresh, the crispy rice with spicy tuna had a great texture, and the spicy snow crab was rich, creamy, and delicious. The beef short ribs were tender and full of flavor, and the dover sole with crispy spinach lived up to its name with an amazing crunch. We also tried the 16oz prime New York steak, which was flavorful, though it came out closer to medium than the medium rare we requested. Even so, it was still enjoyable. We ordered a few other rolls and dishes that I can't remember by name, but everything across the board was really solid. First time at Nobu Malibu and it was great. Made a reservation for the patio and got sat right when we walked in. They offer a 15 min grace period for reservations and we all know that's necessary with LA traffic. The restaurant also has a valet company but they don't validate. We were greeted right away and offered waters until our server Sapeer came. He was very energetic, knew the menu very well and took great care of us! He made our experience all the more better. Onto the food, I decided to start off with their wagyu tacos and let me tell you, these are not meant to be entrees, hardly an appetizer. I asked Sapeer how big they were and he said they're a bit bigger than the lemon slices we had on the table. I honestly thought he was joking, until a food runner brought the tacos. They were good, but not worth $18 each, with a required order of at least 2 tacos. Not sure how their other tacos are but I want to assume they'll be the same size. It was laughable and made for a great conversation for our table. My group got some classic sushi rolls and said they were great. A bit small for the price, but good. We also got their jidori chicken which came with 2 dipping sauces. This was very flavorful. The dipping sauces were delicious and made the dish 10x better. We came for a birthday, but unfortunately they don't offer any birthday desserts. All in all, service was outstanding from everyone, from the hosts, food runners and even the bussers. And of course let's not forget the beautiful ocean front views and scenic sounds of the waves splashing right in front of you, doesn't get any better than that. read more

Wow these reservations for Nobu Malibu were one of the hardest ones I worked to attain. I originally tried to get reservations the week before my boyfriend's birthday but when I woke up in the morning 30 days prior, it was already too late. None of the time slots were available on open table. I had to stay up until midnight to squeeze into an opening for the weekend after his birthday. I even coordinated with the restaurant so that his dessert would say Happy Birthday with his name written on. Nobu Malibu is located off the coast. One of their strengths is having a stunning ocean view. The water facing seats are hard to get, but letting them know you have a special occasion helps. Very romantic!! They have valet parking for $15. If you don't like valeting your car, there is street parking or other paid lots between $10-15 in the area. We were very lucky to sit at a table with ocean view. Sapeer was our amazing server during our visit and we can tell he was doing everything he can to ensure that we had a special outing. His exemplary service is one of the primary reasons for this five star review. We decided to do the Omakase Lunch ($135/person) and added on the Monkfish Pate ($30) and the Black Cod ($48) which Sapeer worked into the course for us into the order it would best be enjoyed. My boyfriend also had a Coke ($4) and I had a Hot Green Tea ($3) since the weather was a little chilly. From a taste perspective, this omakase menu is about average to me. The meal started out strong but it somewhat went downhill. The ambiance is definitely more impressive than the food. Nevertheless there were some delicious bites with the tartare, oysters, monfish pate with caviar, toro, and king crab tempura. My boyfriend was really surprised that the famous prep intensive black cod miso was so disappointing. It had the perfect buttery soft moist texture, but it was overly sweet for his palette, as I knew it would be since he doesn't like sweetness. It was also basically just a piece of fish considering I purchased the dish to be added to the meal. It really needs a side. The ribeye they served was also disappointing. Neither the taste or texture were impressive. If it wasn't part of the omakase course, I wouldn't go to a sushi place to order steak. I was still really proud I was able to get my boyfriend a reservation here. The dessert comes out with the custom happy birthday note and he was really surprised and impressed by my efforts. We had a great time enjoying the view and each other's company. My family and I came here from the SGV to celebrate my Mom's 80th birthday. We had heard this place mostly boasts great vibes and views, and that some of the dishes are excellent. This assessment was pretty much spot-on. A couple people in my group had the black cod, which they are famous for, and said it was amazing. However, I had the steak, and it was underwhelming. The appetizers and salads we had were just "meh." Where this place misses the mark, though, is the service and overall experience. The service itself was good, but nothing special. I had told them over the phone that it's my mom's 80th birthday and requested a patio table. They said they'll try their best but couldn't make any promises. While that was understandable and we didn't end up getting patio seating, there was no acknowledgment of her birthday from the hostess or wait staff. Most high-end restaurants know you're there to celebrate a special occasion and at least do SOMETHING to acknowledge it, even if it's a simple "Happy Birthday." Unfortunately, this place doesn't make your special occasions feel very special. Even the hostess who checked us in had a cold attitude. This was my first time at Nobu Malibu, and honestly I didn't think it would feel any different from the other Nobu locations I've tried (Manila and Las Vegas). But my sister had been talking about this place forever. For her, Nobu Malibu was "the big one," and she always assumed it was going to be crazy expensive. We ended up going because our family friend from Manila was here, and it was his last night in LA before flying back home. His birthday is on December 13, so we figured--why not celebrate early? The food was perfect from the start. We began with edamame, miso soup, albacore tuna, and I had a California roll to warm things up. But the surprise star of the night was this fried okra appetizer--not too spicy, lightly crisp, and the sauce was unreal. If you ever come here, order that. Generous serving too. For entrées, we all got steak. Tender, flavorful, already sliced, topped with these caramelized onions that taste ridiculously good. You don't even have to cut anything--just enjoy. Service was on point. We literally had four or five servers rotating around our table, making sure everything was taken care of before we even realized we needed anything. Water refilled, plates cleared, dishes arriving right on cue. Seamless. And then the view... that view is something else. We were seated facing the Pacific Ocean during late afternoon, and the sunset was still visible. It's one of those views that just elevates the entire meal. The place was packed when we arrived and still packed when we left. They give you a strict two-hour dining window, but honestly, we had more than enough time to enjoy everything. Dessert was a win too. We had a chocolate dessert with matcha ice cream--so good. And these puff rolls with a cream filling that spills out when you bite into it. Definitely a must-try. Valet parking is right up front, very easy. No dress code whatsoever. I saw dads in shorts and t-shirts, and at the same time, I saw people fully dressed up. Nobody looked out of place. I would recommend making a reservation through Open Table, up to a month in advance. While they ask to file a credit card online, I believe they charge $50 only for same-day cancelations and no-shows; they did not charge me for rescheduling to a later date. Instead of valet, we found close street parking less than a block from the restaurant to make a 6 pm reservation. We arrived about 20 minutes early and were seated immediately upon checking in. Both my partner and I ordered the Omakase for $225, and I also ordered the Hibiscus Ume Fizz, which was very light and refreshing. Unlike certain beverages, the flavor wasn't overbearing for me nor left a sugary aftertaste/feel in my mouth. We were served 7 total courses, plus one "palate cleansing," vegetable handroll to start. (See pictures for number order.) Unfortunately, there were times where the staff spoke on the quieter side so we missed the explanation of some dishes. I'm pretty sure we had the Japanese snapper and Aji, but I couldn't tell you which ones those are. I had mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday in my reservation, and they kindly brought us a brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, a whiskey-infused caramel syrup, and nuts at the end of our meal. This was our first experience with omakase, and we really enjoyed the experience, attentive service, and the high-quality ingredients. I especially enjoyed the tuna dishes: the toro tartare, bluefin toro nigiri, and tuna crispy rice. The sound of the crashing waves every few minutes, the warm..cozy lighting, the upscale and yet relaxing, chill atmosphere..I'm in love! There were also plenty of heat lamps above, so even on a chilly November evening, I actually felt a little bit hot! Service was EXTREMELY attentive, friendly, and helpful with giving information and advice on menu items/customizing things to personal preferences. Of the food we got here, the Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna was a definite favorite!! A perfect blend of the crunchy exterior and an explosion from within as you take a bite - perfectly subtle heat and spice to match the rest of the flavor profiles. Everything else we ordered was similarly high-quality and solid - the only thing we'd probably skip on a future visit is the Rock Shrimp Tempura..which honestly just tasted a bit mushy and bland. The miso black cod, which we usually love at Roy's in Hawaii, was just okay--more dense than buttery, and missing that sweet, flaky flavor we expected. The rock shrimp with spicy creamy sauce felt a bit pedestrian; I'd go with the ponzu version instead. That said, all the dishes were plated beautifully. Service was a letdown. Our first waiter seemed annoyed when I asked to order just one piece of sushi (I didn't realize there was a two-piece minimum). He left mid-meal and handed us off to another server who didn't seem too interested--especially compared to how she interacted with other tables. Definitely not the level of service I expected here. Dessert was another miss. We were celebrating my son's birthday, but they don't offer anything complimentary. We ordered the pumpkin crème brûlée--$25 for a small, average dessert. This review may seem all over the place, but that's how I felt our experience went. Ambiance- 10/10 You can't beat a beautiful sunny (day) late lunch right on the beach. It really is a nice spot to grab drinks and a few rolls. Food- The Black Cod with Miso 100/10 this dish was the main attraction. Worth every penny and probably only reason I'd ever come back. If ever. I truly could eat like 10 of these all to myself. It was buttery and cooked to perfect. The sauce was finger lickin good. The mini wagyu tacos were a easy 8/10 I just wish they were bigger. When I say mini I mean mini. They were like the size of my index finger. Cute and delicious. Everything else was a solid 6/10. I just feel this place is over hyped and it's more of a topic to "brag" about. The prices don't match the quality of the food. The service was soooo bad. I have never been to a place like this where they ignore their patrons. I wish I could say perhaps our waitress was having a bad day or so and the reasoning behind the treatment but she was so rude to us and our reservations were at 2:00pm..meaning they had just been open for a few hrs. The bussers were way more nice and provided better service than our own waitress. We were even making inside jokes about that because we were like "how do we tip them, instead". I've been to Nobu Malibu a handful of times. The location is truly a 10 out of 10. Sunset there is absolutely beautiful, and I highly recommend grabbing a drink and watching it from the patio. It is consistently busy, so for larger groups I would suggest making a reservation. That said, I have gone on a Saturday evening and had no problem getting seated at the sushi bar with friends. Valet is available, but there is also street parking along PCH if you are lucky. On my most recent visit, though, the food was surprisingly underwhelming. The spicy tuna crispy rice, which I have had before and loved, completely missed the mark. There was no crunch at all. It was almost warm and soft, and the texture made it unenjoyable. The shiitake salad was also just okay, nothing memorable or standout. We ordered a few pieces of nigiri as well. The halibut fin was not great, and the albacore was standard. My expectations were higher, and it just did not hit this time. The ambiance is still great and honestly rates higher than the food itself. In my opinion, there are better sushi spots in LA. First of all, Nobu is one of the most legendary quasi-fine dining institutions in Los Angeles. It's one of the hardest tables to book in the entire city, which covers a lot of ground. The food is certainly on the expensive side, more so this location than any other location perhaps in the country because you're sitting right at the foot of the Pacific. Some of the policies of the restaurant seem to me a little too much: for example, they have a security guard policing how long someone can hang out at the railing overlooking the water. The practice doesn't seem very classy to me. That said, the waitstaff was good to us, and the food was good. I liked the crab tempura and the shrimp with the creamy sauce. Again, both were on the pricey side. The desserts were great as well. All this alone is 3.5 or 4 stars. What bumps Nobu up is the miso black cod. This is one of the best fish dishes I've had the privilege of eating. I cannot praise this dish enough. The whole thing is worth experiencing even if just once: the black cod, the view of the water, the dessert. If you're in L.A. for a visit and are never coming back, I think you should consider stopping by Malibu for lunch. It's kind of magical even if you have to deal with security telling you to return to your table for hanging out at the rail too long. However, for repeat visits, especially for the cod, it's probably more prudent to go to Beverly Hills, even if the ambiance is not as scenic. read more

Came here for my girlfriend's birthday and was placed at a great table. Overall, food was good and drinks were great. The lychee martinis were phenomenal but food was a hit or miss. The miso black cod was to DIE FOR. Genuinely worth all the hype. Rock shrimp was just okay, could've used some sweetness. The lobster tacos were just okay and the tuna crispy rice would have been better with no eel sauce. We still did enjoy most of the food and had a pleasant time. What brings me to give this 3 stars is our server. I've been to this location and Newport a few times and have had wonderful servers. Our server, Prong, did not give us any recommendations like any of the other servers did. She had no chit chat with us as I noticed she did with others and overall only took our order. When called to confirm our reservation, I put in the note that we were celebrating my girlfriend's birthday so the reservationist asked me how to spell her name for dessert. When dessert time came around, Prong asked which dessert we wanted to which I said we were okay and I asked if she had gotten the note. She said she had and not once did she say we would not get a complimentary dessert with her name written on it unless we actually ordered a dessert. Upon the check coming, I asked again to make sure if something of a dessert was coming to which she said "there isn't a complimentary dessert and she didn't want to ruin the secret which is why she didn't say anything before." Two things here: 1. If you knew I was expecting a dessert, why wouldn't you tell me that. 2. If you KNEW that we were here for a birthday since it was in the note, why did you not ONCE even say happy birthday to the guest???? After learning this (which was after paying) I asked for the dessert menu because I obviously wanted to get a dessert for my girlfriend. The dessert menu was brought out by someone else much friendlier, and everyone who came around after was not Prong. Although, all these servers went to ask her things multiple times as we could see her standing in the back. One server told us she was "going on break" but we could clearly see her standing there for a while. All in all, had we had a friendlier server as many of them were, I would have enjoyed our nearly $400 experience much more. Brandon spent an obscene amount of money here because I never went, so bro ordered "the whole ocean". Food was undeniably good. The white cod dish is what did it for me. It was slick and smooth...taste was sweet. I was unfamiliar with their game at this restaurant. Sushi does not reek of that cheap, seemingly spoiled stench that cheap sushi has, so proof that the top-rating of this restaurant is indeed valid. service was also really good. Brandon tipped hella because the waiter had some entertaining banter with him. I was just in awe of the conversation, haha! just back and forth with the laughs, especially when Brandon ordered drinks for us. so kind of the waiter to also urge us to take a picture together after all. the place was super duper dim with the dark red wallpaper and the golden yellow lights. so much of the dark wooden colored furniture, too, so it felt intimate, especially with the mirrors at every corner. hard to get lighting for nice pictures, though :( Nonetheless, enjoyed my time here with Brandon. Perfectly located on PCH, if you do your best efforts to try and get patio seating this will be a very memorable experience. I came here to celebrate my mom's birthday and requested patio seating, though they can't guarantee it, you can certainly place the request. For birthdays you can purchase a dessert and they will write happy birthday and a name it stunning letters, and add a candle! Now to get to the good stuff. Coming into Nobu for the first time I had heard many things about it, a common one being that it is overrated. My expectations weren't up in the sky however, as soon as I got the order of edamame with the spicy garlic, I knew this place was not going to miss! So good, that they disappeared magically within a couple of minutes and no one knew how. The shishito peppers were pretty good and savory. Let me just say that the cocktails here are 1 of 1. I ordered their flor de jamaica margarita and I substituted it with tequila instead of mezcal and WOW! It came with the most beautiful salt rim, and a big ice cube with the nobu named engraved on it. Talk about boujee!!! Yes I'm absolutely coming back just to lounge and enjoy a nice drink. For the main dishes, we got the black miso cod since I've heard nothing but great things about it, and it did not disappoint. Though on the sweeter side, I really enjoyed the flavor profile. The sea bass was absolutely amazing, the lemon was perfectly balanced, just the way I like it. I ordered their ribeye with truffle butter sauce, and initially I was hesitant to get it because I heard mixed things. I'm so glad I went with my gut feeling and decided to go through with the order because WOW! the meat just melted into your mouth, and paired with these onions on top that were a little too good! Finally we had to end with dessert so, naturally I had to get their mochi ice-cream which was a nice way to end such a beautiful day. All to say that this was an amazing experience from start to end, and we got super lucky to get patio seating with the best view of the coastline. we got the classic recommended dishes - black cod with miso, yellowtail jalapeño, rock shrimp tempura with creamy spicy sauce. these are all 10/10 dishes and would highly recommend especially if it's your first time visiting. the location is gorgeous and if you're lucky you'll get outside seating with a view of the ocean. service is good but nothing exceptional. the spicy tuna and crispy rice dish was disappointing, there was too much tuna and not enough rice. if you're visiting and want a high quality luxury sushi experience, i would suggest going to matsuhisa instead. the service and dishes are more traditional and the price point is much more worth it! read more
