Torn seats in Lucy' Cafe. Not a thrilling place to dine. How can you let your restaurant go like this? Duct tape only goes so far.

I had not been to Lucy's Cafe on South Valley since they opened a few years ago, but today I stopped in for breakfast. The interior of the restaurant is much the same as it was when the previous owner was there. There is a long counter and two rows of padded booths. The interior does not exactly sparkle...it has not been well maintained and there were many cuts and patch jobs on the seats of the booths. (see photo below to look at torn booth covers) This restaurant does not lend itself to a comfortable dining experience; some may think it somewhat depressing. Rate the ambiance on the lower side. When I entered a woman told me to sit wherever I wanted. She was handling the front of the house all by herself. She quickly brought a menu to my table and took my drink order. (She never did give me a straw nor did she ever follow-up after finally getting the correct breakfast to me.) This waitress was quite friendly (as others have pointed out) but not everyone will go for all the touchy-feely stuff she was passing out! Today I ordered the Spanish Omelet breakfast which came with hash browns and a biscuit. After about twelve minutes of ordering the waitress dropped off a plate with some little packets of butter and jam. But wait! IT WAS NOT "MY" PLATE! Instead of a biscuit there was toast on the plate. It had several large strips of bacon, but just one fried egg and no Spanish Omelet. I GOT UP TO HUNT DOWN THE WAITRESS AND POINT OUT TO HER THAT SHE GAVE ME SOMEONE ELSE'S PLATE. When I located her behind the counter she was walking around with my Spanish Omelet plate...heading where was anybody's guess. After notifying her of the mistake she carried my Omelet to my table and swapped out the other meal. But, in the process she took away the knife and fork and left me to eat with my fingers. I once again had to hunt her down to tell her I needed a fork. Regarding the food: the biscuit was a bit dry and lacking flavor. It was mediocre at best. Rate it a "C." The hash browns were undercooked and certainly not brown or crispy. They lacked seasoning. Rate the hash browns a "C-" or maybe a "D." Not good. The omelet itself was not bad but the onion, ham, and jalapeno peppers inside were diced so small that one could hardly see them let alone taste them. The eggs themselves were done fairly well. The white cheesy sauce over the omelet was ok but not as good as reviewers would have you believe. I would rate the omelet between a "B" and a "B+." The white sauce I would say was a "B-." After finishing my meal I cashed out up front where the waitress never bothered to ask me how everything was. It's the little things like that that make a difference. How do they expect to know where they are not measuring up to standard??? All in all, this breakfast at Lucy's Cafe (for the complete dining experience) rates about THREE STARS...below the norm for a full serve restaurant. All the regulars...many the older types...seem to like it, but if you dine here do not expect too much. As far as the service the waitress would be better off emphasizing efficiency and professionalism while cutting back on the touchy-feely personal stuff.

Lucy's burrito with ground beef, jalapeno, tomato and their amazing white sauce

Our favorite breakfast place in town. You can get amazing pancakes, anything with green chile, chorizo with eggs, posole, Lucy's burrito (get this anytime with the white sauce), actual basted eggs, burgers (big appetite? Get the Guapo), patty melts, menudo, chicken fried steak and eggs, pecan pie and almost anything you'd find at any diner worth its salt in New Mexico. Sit at the Counter and enjoy the show from an experienced, hard working and funny waitstaff. I will admit the kitchen can be slow at times and you may have a couple cups of coffee before your plate comes out. We loved the Zia - and are thrilled Lucy has taken over. It's super clean now and filled with good food, families and conversation.

Great service and the "red beef" is delicious. The red chile is the best I've had since moving to Cruces.

We wanted another cocktail, we had to ask. This is not how you work with customers. She should be removed. Finally, we are FETCH shoppers and asked for an itemized receipt and the bartender had a few feelings about it. The entire reason we went there was to get the FETCH points and she was not happy about that request. Prices were about what you'd expect, nothing crazy. The desserts were just as solid--very tasty and a great way to wrap things up. He has beaten stage four cancer three separate times. Needless to say, his career military background and having just retired in October 2025 served him well. He has faced every diagnosis head-on like the true American soldier he is. During one of our quiet conversations, he shared something that clearly weighed on him. He was heartbroken that he never got the chance to take his wife out for their 55th wedding anniversary in December because he was in the hospital. The next day, I asked him a simple question. If you could pick one restaurant within a 100-mile radius, just one, where would you want to go once you had your strength back? Without hesitation, he said La Posta. Over the next few weeks, a lot changed. He was released from the hospital. He slowly began to regain his strength. First the cane went away, then short walks turned into longer ones, and eventually he was even driving himself from LC to EPT for doctor's appointments. When I finally asked if he felt strong enough to go to that meal we had talked about, he lit up. He started telling me stories. How his father used to bring him to La Posta. How it had remained top notch throughout the years. He went into detail about every menu item he loved. But the one thing he really wanted me to understand was the ambiance. You will get it when you are there, he told me. I called to see if they took reservations. We were not even sure they did. A young woman named Priscilla answered the phone. I explained the situation. My uncle was finally strong enough to return to his favorite restaurant, one that held a lifetime of memories, and he had missed celebrating his 55th wedding anniversary. I told her I wanted to surprise them and make the night unforgettable. I even mentioned I was planning to have flowers delivered. Priscilla did not hesitate. She immediately connected me with her manager, Teresa. I asked if we could have a larger table than one meant for three people because my uncle wanted to order everything. Honestly, I just wanted him to eat, to enjoy himself, to feel normal again. Teresa agreed without question. Then something unexpected happened. Teresa explained that Priscilla was a single mom of two who had recently started a floral business on the side and truly wanted to help make this night special. She asked if it would be okay to involve her. Of course, I said yes. I was transferred back to Priscilla and told her to go big. No expense spared. I gave her full creative freedom and an unlimited budget. Unbeknownst to me, Priscilla partnered with a friend who specialized in balloon arrangements. What she created was nothing short of breathtaking. Place cards. Multiple floral centerpieces. An ornate floral display. A large professional sign welcoming my aunt and uncle to the restaurant. She handled everything with grace, professionalism, and kindness, even as our party grew from three people to thirteen. And then the story took a turn. The day before the dinner, my uncle was rushed into emergency surgery. Suddenly, everything was uncertain. Half the family canceled to stay at the hospital. We kept Priscilla updated as events unfolded. Not once did she complain. Not once did she lose her composure. She adapted to every change with pure professionalism and empathy. She even adjusted the floral arrangements when we decided to bring flowers and food to the hospital instead. That is when I learned that the owners of La Posta had been informed of the situation. The male manager on duty, and I regret not remembering his name, passed along a message from them expressing their deepest condolences and gratitude. He also shared that they wished they could have been there to meet my uncle. There really are still good people in this world. After her shift ended at 4 p.m., Priscilla went to pick up her kids and then came back to the restaurant just to meet me. She walked me through everything she had created and explained the work behind it. When I asked how much I owed her, she paused and said she wanted to bless my family and could not accept payment. I was overwhelmed. Her work would have easily cost four to five hundred dollars. I insisted on tipping her at the very least, and she reluctantly agreed. The food that night was incredible. We had a wonderful server, and the food was amazing. We ordered extra meals to go so my cousins could bring my uncle his favorite dishes back to the hospital. It was a small way to lift his spirits during one of the darkest moments our family has faced. My uncle asked me to thank you for the food. And I want to thank everyone at La Posta for the hospitality, the compassion, and the humanity. When my uncle regains his strength and comes home again, we will return with his wife so he can finally give her the 55th wedding anniversary dinner they both deserve.
