Luigi's is a landmark restaurant in Bakersfield. It's a place where people come to eat, drink, and celebrate. It's always busy, and always bustling with people having a good time. What can I say that hasn't already been said? If you've never been there, then just go! You might have to wait to get in, but it's worth it. One of my favorites on their menu is The Luigi's Wedge Salad. A small one is a great bargain, and it's not exactly small. It's the perfect combination of lettuce, Prosciutto, onions, avocado, and cherry tomatoes in a delicious creamy basil salad dressing. Make sure and ask to have it chopped, and get a side order of pickled tongue to top it all off. It's a combination made in heaven. The Luigi sandwich is also another real favorite. Match it with a Peroni on tap, and just sit back and enjoy life. The patio out back is a great place to dine too. Every single person who works there is as nice as can be, and the deli next door is stocked with lots of fine foods and wine, and they have an excellent selection of various types of bleu cheese. I can't believe I've lived here for so long without having experienced Luigi's! The hype is real. We went on a Friday around 1:00. We were told it would be 30-35 minutes, but it only ended up being 8 minutes. It was so nice to be in a restaurant with character, history and personality. Loved seeing all the old photos. It was noisy, but not from loud music, but from people chatting and enjoying having conversations. We order the red and white pasta, tri tip sandwich and pastrami sandwich. They do not skimp on the meat. Sandwiches were delicious. I enjoyed my pasta and side plate of salami, cheese and bread. To end our lunch we had the butterfinger ice cream pie. Chef's kiss on a great lunch. The staff at Luigi's doesn't skip a beat. Our water glasses were never empty. Even being busy, the service isn't compromised. Afterwards, we walked around their store. Now let me give you the insider tips because this is one of those places that if you know, you know! So, If you want the patio (and trust me, you do), get there before 10:45 a.m. They open at 11, and those tables disappear FAST. Even on hot days, the misters keep it cool, and it's the perfect spot to enjoy lunch. This visit, I ordered my absolute favorite! THE Giovanna Salad with grilled chicken! I had to go light on the meal to save room the real star of the show: the Butterfinger Ice Cream Pie! The food is incredible, and the staff always makes you feel like family! I dropped by Luigi's since I was in the area, and ordered the Giovanna's Gourmet Salad- small since I didn't want to get something heavy due to my long drive. I placed the order over the phone, and the cashier was very nice. She had my order ready when I arrived. The Giovanna's salad came with mixed greens with candied walnut and pecan crumbles, no actual pieces in the salad so it was a little disappointing. I got the blue cheese on the side. The salad was very fresh and tasty, paired with balsamic vinaigrette. There is a separate restaurant area, bar, and deli here! It is so cute inside and has a lot of character. I stopped by recently while my boss was in town as Luigi's has become a favorite of his when visiting. Admittedly, this was my first time. I know, to many locals this is probably unimaginable for someone who has called Bakersfield home for almost 20 years, and let me say.. I get it. I now understand the hype. From the delicious food to the way they make you feel like family with their impeccable yet personable service, it is no surprise this over 115 year old local family business has won over the hearts and minds of Bakersfield and those who visit. Our warm welcome: We didn't check the hours beforehand, and showed up at 2:30, which is their closing time, like complete chumps. Never the less, every person in both the deli and restaurant insisted for us to come in and eat. The owner, Gino, was one of the many friendly faces who greeted us and ensured us it was no problem. This was very kind. I don't like showing up within the last hour before a restaurant closes, let alone the literal time they close. The kindness and welcoming approach in which everyone insisted we stayed, made me know they truly wanted us to have the chance to enjoy an amazing lunch with them, and amazing would be an understatement. The service was down right impressive. Our server, Chris, was incredibly friendly and attentive. Arguably the best service in town. Now let's get to the delicious food: Everything we ordered was top notch, but the truffle sachetti "pasta purse" completely stole the show. They are now a forever must as a shared appetizer or main dish. Though I do very much look forward to jumping around the menu and coming in during their daily and seasonal/popup specials I've seen on their social media. The phenomenal ambiance: The atmosphere is something out of a Billy Joel song, a compliment I am sure I am not the first to give. The inside is decked out wall to wall with old family photos and Bakersfield memorabilia. Luigi's is crowded. Parking kinda sucks. The neighborhood ain't great. The food is awesome. Luigi's is a family-owned Bako institution. Service here is quick and attentive. Why? The lunch rush is pretty much their hours of business, start to finish. Although there's lots of seating, both interior and a party-atmosphered patio, the wait can be lengthy. Speaking of "lengthy", expect to spend a couple of hours here, including the wait for a table, eating your meal, and spending time in their shop. The food is hearty and delicious. A "small" personal antipasto plate shows up at your table shortly after you sit. There are so many delicious-sounding things on their menu it's hard to choose what to order (I had one of the best tasting steaks I ever had here) They serve dishes I've only seen here, like the Sacco beans (which are also sold in their shop) What I can see after eating here a few times is that they offer a marriage of old school Italian-American with local Basque influences and personal family touches. Luigi's is strictly a daytime lunch affair. They are opened Tuesday through Saturday, but only from 10:30AM to 2:30PM. That's it. There is no dinner service. The area -- Old Town Kern -- can be-- okay, IS -- sketchy, even in the daytime. There is plenty of parking; lots are scattered in the restaurants vicinity, but Luigi's is so popular and they're only opened for lunch so you get a full days number of customers in the span of 4 hours. I typically go to Luigi's for an evening event. Last week, I took the time to trek downtown to have lunch with friends. It was great. There was entirely too much food, and it was all delicious. Thankfully, I decided to share the Thursday special sandwich. That was the perfect amount. The salads were fresh and all the ingredients were just the right combinations and great flavor. I came here on a Wednesday for lunch. Restaurant was packed and parking was very scarce. I found a seat at the bar and was greeted by Julie, the bartender. I ordered the Italian deli sandwich on sour dough and a side of pasta salad. Food arrived within 15 minutes. The pasta salad is delicious : it comes with garbanzo beans which was different for me. The deli sandwich was great! Tons of meat and fresh vegetables. The sour dough bread, however, is a little hard. I would order the other bread next time. I will say sometimes the pasta gets way too soggy when you order through door dash but it's the perfect opportunity to get a salad or a sandwich. Luigi's please make the Spicy Chris available on DoorDash!!! I love coming here during the holiday season to pickup peppermint pies for Christmas and NYE. The Clam Linguine was cooked perfectly and had a ton of clams which was really nice. I needed to add a dash of lemon to bring it even more over the top. Service totally depends on who your server is. For the most part service is usually very good. I noticed last time we were there our actual waitress rarely spoke to us but was conversing with the tables around us. John who was my initial server at the table insisted that I didn't need to move, but I didn't want others to have wait to be seated while I ate alone at a 4 top. Food is Amazing with so many delicious choices. The lines tell the tale. Always bustling and busy. My work schedule and weekend schedule do not dovetail into the restaurant's hours of operation. Today, I took the day off to celebrate my son's birthday and decided to make that pilgrimage to Luigi's. I am SO glad I did. The place absolutely lives up to its hype--excellent food, service, and culture. My best friend is a Sicilian from Queens and I thought I was back at her house. We arrived at 11:35 am and the place was packed to the hills. The front staff was very accommodating and professional. We went to the quaint deli/market next door and purchased a few items. Every year during the holiday season I look forward to the peppermint pie! you can order it whole or if you're dining in you can order by the slice! you can even get some from the gift shop which my household did and we ordered ahead so that we could bring this to our Christmas celebrations and every year, the family loves this pie! Luigi's is probably the top restaurant in Bakersfield. I can't think of anything that comes close. I've had multiple things across the menu and nothing has disappointed thus far. The wait tends to be quite long and to any new patron that should be a good sign. Kill time and sit by their bar inside and outside! The drink costs aren't crazy and they work very quickly. The staff is very helpful and they're very open to customizing your experience. They'll even tell you the best way to do it. You'll see the many ways I've customized my meals both below and in my photos! Nicco's Steak and Pasta - I get this glorious slab of steak probably a third of the times I visit. Most of the time they are done to my particular liking with one instance where I considered it overdone. For a few bucks extra they can add some gorgonzola cheese melted on top of the steak for more savor. As with all the dishes you can even swap out the pasta! Truffle Sacchetti - Heavy flavor bombs. If you're getting this you'd need to some bread to scoop up oil and clean up your plate cause it's just that good. On the expensive side as far as pastas go, plus it doesn't have any protein. I recommend getting this as a side to your meals instead of getting it by itself. Ribs - A special on the weekends. I think this is the greatest bang for your buck. They offer a half rack and a full rack for $10 more. I gotta tell ya, you'd have to be crazy hungry to finish a full rack. If you find that the ribs are lacking in flavor, I highly suggest asking for some barbecue sauce and they will happily give it to you for no extra charge. The sauce is sweet and tangy just like typical barbecue sauces. Lasagna - Another special. Something about this is just so good. Great amount of ricotta, humongous serving, enough to share or even take home. The sandwiches in general are all pretty good, I've tried a few of them but I think the selections above are what makes this place special. The food itself was really good , flavorful, well-prepared, and definitely what you'd expect from a solid Italian spot. I ordered catering/takeout for an event totaling a little over $400, so the quality of the food was appreciated and enjoyed. That said, the service unfortunately fell short. When I called to place the catering order, the person on the phone was unhelpful and came across as rude. I had reviewed the menu beforehand and asked a few reasonable questions about catering. When I politely said "thank you so much for your help" and was mid-sentence saying goodbye, she hung up without responding, which felt dismissive and unprofessional. When I arrived to pick up the food, everything was packed in what looked like shipping/Costco-style boxes. While that alone wasn't a dealbreaker, I did ask if some of the items that would get cold could be placed in the appropriate catering/takeout containers that I've seen them provide to other customers. I was told they could do one, but that proper catering containers require an "extra large" order. Although my order wasn't in the thousands, it was still a significant catering purchase -- and with a 30-minute drive home, much of the food ended up getting cold. Overall, the food was good, but the customer service !!especially over the phone!! was disappointing. I've had better catering/takeout experiences with other Italian restaurants in town that were more accommodating and communicative. Luigis is Bakersfield famous! It's such a staple that our family braved standing in line on their busiest day of the year (the Saturday before Christmas) for lunch here. Reservations/Walk-Ins: They do take reservations but they can be difficult to get and must be booked far in advance. Since we had missed the reservation window, we came early to stand in line to get our name on the walk-in list. We were advised that anyone in the line at opening would get to eat there, but the wait time would vary. We arrived around 10:15am and the line was already around the block. A little before 11am, they started to seat guests and take names for the waitlist. We were quoted 2-2.5 hours. We decided to grab a drink at the Padre nearby rather than go home, which ended up being key. Stay close by in the area. We were called around 1.25 hours after we checked in. They give you 5 minutes to arrive. Atmosphere: Luigis is a lively spot! There were so many folks celebrating the holidays. We saw a table full of santas and a large group that took over almost the entire main dining room the long way! This is the spot to gather with friends, do some day drink and dig into good food. If you're looking for a quiet meal, this isn't the place for you. Food: The food is simple but delicious! I got the sandwich and pasta combo, which I think is absolutely the way to go. The sandwich was a nice cold cut italian and I enjoyed the pasta with red sauce. My father in law got a juicy steak sandwich. Everyone who took a bite of it immediately wished they had gotten it because of how soft and tender the meat was. We had to finish off the meal with a butterfinger pie! Luigis is a staple in Old Town Kerns, Bakersfield. My broworker's Nona approves so I know Luigis is as authentic as it gets without flying to Italy. Reservations highly recommended, they were pretty busy when we came by for lunch on a Wednesday. The weather was lovely so we decided to sit outside to enjoy the sunshine. Cassie took great care of us the whole time we were there. The menu was glorious with so many delicious options to pick from. My bro boss ordered their Truffle App ($17.50/small) for the four of us to share. It comes with a sliced loaf of sourdough for you to dip into the delicious sauce. This truffle app is like glorious pasta truffle purses. SO DELICIOUS. As for our entrees, I focused on the lunch specials to help myself narrow things down. I decided on their half order of Lasagna ($13.75) and my broworkers all got their Cole's Steak Sandwich ($24.95/each) which comes with thinly sliced ny steak with grilled onions and pepperjack cheese in a toasted soft roll. Okay okay maybe I should have confirmed and gotten that too, but my lasagna was really delicious. The half portion was still a mighty size and I easily got food coma after my meal. It was a good thing they had a cute gift shop with Italian imports as well as local Bakersfield goods for purchase. We picked out some thoughtful gifts to make gift baskets for our clients. I really love the family-vibes I get from the business both on the restaurant side and the giftshop side. I know this will be my first of many many visits to Luigis. I got to say with a reservation we were able to sit down at a great time. We had a great menu, funny and attentive. It gets so packed I can see why they take a while in the kitchen to provide us with fresh food. Because man oh man the food is amazing!!! For my first time I did not hold back. Our group really enjoyed the pasta and meals. The Truffle pasta was my favorite, many of our friends ordered large portions but I wish there was even more in a large. It is divine!!! The New York steak was so tender and juicy and flavorful. The ribs had such a good taste and also so tender. We couldn't forget dessert. The food was good. I had really high expectations for it so when I tried the pasta it was good but not exceptional. My wife got the steak and white pasta and I got the sandwich and red meat sauce pasta. We also got the cheesy garlic bread but it was so oily it was like half drenched in olive oil. Don't get me wrong if you like olive oil that much you'll like it but it was too much for us. Their dessert was my favorite. We got the butterfinger ice cream. The restaurant is decorated with a lot of photos which gave it a cool vibe. It does get really packed in there so our service wasn't the best because it took an hour to be seated and we put our names down a few minutes after they opened and it took 15 minutes after we got seated to get someone to start to take our order. No one took our drink order so we had to ask a separate waiter for drinks. read more

For being born and raised in Bakersfield, I'm pissed that I have never been here previously in my 31 years of living. After eyeballing this place for awhile, I finally made it to their lunch. This place is insanely so good! I can defenitly see why they have been around for so long as a Bakersfield staple on Italian food. Located in the Old Town Kern area, you will find them tucked away on E 19th st right on the corner. I have heard from my employees how amazing this joint is so I had come give them a try. Stopped by with my wife for lunch and we shared a large pasta bolganese and the Luigi's sandwich. The bolognese was insanely good and perhaps one of the best I have ever had. My wife isn't reallly into meat sauces but SHE LOVED THIS ONE. The Luigi's sandwich is also very good and the ingredients are of quality and so fresh! Honestly our lunch was a 10/10. To top it off, our server was incredibly kind and very good at his job! He kept making reccomendations and checking on us and we really appreciated that. Overall we can't wait to come back. Make sure to check them out if you haven't already, you won't regret coming by that's for sure. read more
