I brought my sewing machine in for servicing and was immediately pressured to buy a new one instead. Margaret criticized my machine and made inaccurate claims about its capabilities, even after I explained I was happy with it and only wanted repairs. When I returned to picked it up, I was told a part had been replaced. When I asked why, she refused to explain and instead argued that I had signed the estimate, which I never disputed. Fortunately, another employee was able to intervene and clearly and calmly answer my question about the replacement part in seconds. At checkout, the total was a little higher than expected. When I asked for a breakdown, she initially refused and sharply responded, "No! Don't you trust me?" Only after pushing did she explain the charges. I had no issue paying. I just wanted basic communication and to understand the work that was done and costs associated. The repair may be fine, but the customer service from Margaret was dismissive and hostile. Went to the store to purchase a belt. Looked around the shop and thought my daughter might like new sewing machine. Never took the machine out of the box or trunk of my car. My daughter did not care for it. I went back the next business day to return the product, NEW NEVER OPENED AND NEVER TAKEN OUT OF CAR. The response from them was ALL SALES FINAL, NO REFUNDS, NO EXCEPTIONS, not even offer return with a restocking fee. I guess I will cut my losses, and someone on Ebay will get a great deal. She has an acid tongue and a bad memory. She carries her banner so high. She is always right, no matter how wrong. The CM 17 machine I purchased was defective from the factory. It was a nightmare. It only worked off and on and I complained and was told to "take lessons". Lessons would not have helped this broken machine. I suspect I paid for a new machine that had been refurbished. I phoned Luke's Sewing Center to ask about any good sewing machines with a large throat area to allow room for a quilt to yet through. Genevieve answered the phone and began telling me what there was available. She then asked me if she could put me on hold for just a minute. She wanted to check on something. I was on hold for about 15 seconds. When she came back to me, she apologized for the hold. She told me that they had just gotten in a gently used machine and it had just been serviced. I had some questions about it and Margaret came on the phone and answered my questions. She was more familiar with this particular machine. I wish I could give them a negative number. I purchased a Singer Featherweight from someone who had had it serviced at Luke's. At that time they told her they put a new bobbin case in it. She was charged over $200 which included the NEW ($80) bobbin case. She told me she never took the machine out of the case when she got it back.in fact, the material the Luke's demonstrated the stitching on was still under the needle and attached to the thread! I have owned it for 2 weeks and the bobbin case broke. When I got it out of the machine I could clearly see that it was NOT a new case. When I took it back to them to get it replaced the owner Margaret informed me it had been 5 months it was actually 3) and they were not responsible for anything after that long. When I informed them that they clearly had not done what their tech said they did...including how much cleaning of the insides I had to do after I got the machine including the rancid oil soaked drip pad. She asked me if I was calling her a liar. Then told me I could leave the store and shop somewhere else. She then followed me into the parking lot. Saying she would replace the case for $50. I told her that I wouldn't give anyone more money to fix something they charged for fixing that they never fixed. This was the rudestbusiness person I every dealt with. read more

Terrible customer service at Elsmere store. They charged me $15.00 on top of the $149.00 they said would the charge to fix my sewing machine. The employee at the Amelia store, who actually fixed my machine, said the part cost $3.50 and the part was taken off an old machine. I have a design 1 husqvarna that was my mothers. However, it was not working correctly. I could not buy parts for it because it took a floppy disk. It does sew very nicely though. I bought a new embroidery machine and was supposed to take my mothers in for parts. However, in the mean time my car was in a serious accident and my husband was killed in the accident. The sewing machine was in the trunk. I do not know if it still works. It was pretty banged up. I went into the store and told them what happened. They said it was fine. I could still bring it in. I ask them how much is was because I wanted to buy it back from them. It was my moms! The gentleman at the store said just go ahead and keep it. You do not need to pay us anything and thank you for being honest. I left with tears in my eyes thanking God for their generosity! read more

I've purchased 2 machines from Luke's and have had a good experience both times. I was offered free lessons both times on how to use the machine if I needed help and was even given a few free items when purchasing my topaz. I took them up on the free lessons and felt like it learned a lot and it was worth my time. I just got a Viking serger and I'm excited to start using it. read more

Major regrets at setting foot inside this store. I took my sewing machine in for a tune-up, and I wish I'd run for the door at the first red flag. I had to speak to three different people to even drop my sewing machine off. They all wanted me to speak to Margaret, who insulted the three-year-old $400 Singer I brought in and tried to pressure me into looking at new machines. The machine I have is perfectly fine for my needs. Apparently a tune-up here runs $129, and for that price I expect to be communicated with and to have my machine ready on time. She said I could pick it up in two weeks. I dropped my machine off on September 21st, and it is now October 11th and nobody can tell me where my machine is or when it will be ready. I've left three messages and nobody will call me back. I really need my machine to finish two costumes by Wednesday of next week at the very latest, and I have no idea if I will be able to get my sewing machine in time to finish them. I committed to hem 32 uniforms for my daughter's school choir, and I was hoping to do four per day until they were all finished. Now it looks like I will have to pull a few all-nighters in order to meet my commitments. Unlike Luke's, nobody is paying me to keep mine -- but if I have to go buy another machine at JoAnn's I WILL. Unless you have your wallet open the second you walk in, you're chopped liver to these people. I brought a Singer machine from the 50s to see about repair. The woman I spoke to quoted me $170 without even looking at it and immediately whisked me away to try and sell me an $800 machine. I wasn't interested whatsoever in buying a new machine, but she pushed the sale so aggressively. I get it, you make commission, but you also lost a repair customer from being SO pushy and rude. I am a passionate and technical tailor. I was in need of some information about a newer style (to me) sewing machine. I called and they said come right on in. Once I got there, the atmosphere was nice and the employees were very helpful. I do want to say to those who had bad experiences, sometimes we have to turn the mirror around; hear and see both sides. They are there to provide us with what we come in for, but just like you and I they are human. If they don't suggest then we call them lazy. Because I felt like this place is greedy or desperate and try used car sales lot tactics to sell you what they want to make a buck! They don't listen and just rattle off sales pitches. They have very cleverly engineered an unfriendly COVID setup that is great for pick up and drop off of machines needing maintenance. But if you are shopping, don't bother, unless you are dying to over pay or get ripped off. I mentioned to my mom that I was going to go to Luke's and she said she went there years ago and there was a nasty woman working there and she said she'd never go back. Well, that was "years ago" so I didn't think much of it. WOW. We had the unpleasant experience that is Margaret. She said right off the bat that she was having a bad day but Margaret is just having a bad life apparently and should not be in customer service. She is presumptuous, accusatory, abrasive, rude and her own arrogance ran us out of the store. It's unsettling to be falsely accused, but we've had a good laugh about the odds of such an attitude in a SEWING center!! Usually the nicest people! I deal with dozens of people a day at my work and yes there are personalities but most people have good character, but after our experience and reading these reviews, it's clear that Margaret is the one who lacks character. I'm new to the area and had just discovered Luke's. I had stopped in to order a part for one of my vacuum cleaners...all well and good. While I was there, a little old lady stopped in for just a moment to see if someone there could help her out with a wiring question she had on a tv she had in her vehicle...I guess she thought the "repair" part of Luke's might mean someone could spend a moment of their time helping her out on something unrelated. I was at the counter when this little old lady asked. An employee, I was told her name was Margaret, jumped on this little old lady and, I felt, was just all kinds of rude. I paid for my purchase and told the little old lady that I'd take a look at her tv for her...she was parked right by the door so it took me all of 15 seconds to walk to her truck. She had a wire crossed and it took me another minute or two to figure it out and fix it. While I was doing that, I heard yelling from inside the shop. The little old lady explained that she had gone back inside to break a $20 to pay me for fixing the wire on her tv and Margaret was yelling at her to get out and go away. I fixed her tv wire, declined payment and then walked inside to get a refund on my purchase. That was just a really crappy way to deal with a person. I've got three different vac's for my business and a Dyson at home that gets regular maintenance and filters as well as my others that need parts and bags. Let me tell you who won't be getting my business. If the only time you're nice to people is when you want/are getting their money, that's a pretty pitiful approach to business and life. I was in this store a few months ago. I needed to get a sewing machine, and was hoping for a good deal on a used machine. Mike hooked me up with a quality metal Necci machine. He was very knowledgeable about the brand and the specific model. He walked me through the ins and outs, provided some thread, and a manual. I also bought a used Kirby vacuum. The Kirby came with 2 extra belts, all the attachments and two extra bags. Both machine work great. I will totally go back for parts and service as long as these machines last, and return when they need replaced. read more

Run- don't walk - away! This store treated me dishonestly. I took in a serger that had a broken upper looper. They told me that sergers were "complicated machines" and it could not be fixed. They convinced me to give it to them - since it was worthless, they said - for spare parts. This after I had purchased a $30 serger pressure foot from them. They took that, too. Then they convinced me to buy a new serger which I later discovered to be at a greatly inflated price. The woman owner was very rude to me after I had spent a lot of money with them. I have since learned that my original serger could have easily been fixed! I should have known something was wrong there when the woman ahead of me in line was very upset about how she was treated. Although the store was crowded with a wide variety of machines I did find the staff friendly and helpful. Their prices were comparable to other sewing stores I had visited. While there I asked about other items I was considering purchasing in the future and the young man I talked to was very knowledgeable about them and gave me all the information I needed plus recommended something that may work better. My husband bought my new 720 Pfaff sewing machine from Luke's at a Sewing Expo show in October. It was a Christmas present for me and I was trying to hold out using it until after Christmas but caved on the 17 Dec...promising myself I was just unboxing it and putting it into the carrying case to put under the tree. It appeared it was missing parts and I called to ask. Margaret was RUDE. She was busy and I should have called when I bought it. Even though I said Oct she kept saying in Sept! By now I'm hot under the collar and ask for the person I bought it from. She says everyone is off for Christmas and i would have to talk to her even if he was there. She kept insisting I missed something in the box like I was stupid. Never buy a $3600.00 machine from a company that isn't local to you is apparently the takeaway. Disappointed in high-pressure sales tactics by owner. I appreciate their helpful, knowledgeable service. However, when I needed to purchase a used machine (since my old one needed a repair that was more than I wanted to pay for a machine I didn't love), the sales clerk showed me a replacement used model that would be an upgrade. She quoted me a price, and it was a bit high. The sales person asked the manager/owner, and they lowered the price a bit. I said I would still need to think about it and come back the following day. I was then turned over to the owner who then proceeded to tell me that they would not honor the discounted price the following day. I was incredulous. I said I was a cautious buyer and didn't like to make snap decisions. The conversation went something like this, with her saying something like, What's the problem? You said you needed a machine with these features and we have one for you in the price range you want. I said I need to think about it. She pushed back, saying something like, What's there to think about? If you want this price, you'll have to take it today because I won't honor the price tomorrow. I just don't see what the problem is. This is what you want. I ended up taking the machine, because I needed it right away and felt backed into a corner. Had I to do it over, I would have walked out and continued shopping. This kind of sales tactic is unconscionable in today's business environment, where customer service is king. read more

I have been shopping at Luke's on Dixie Hwy in KY for years. I have a masters in fashion, and presently most of my work is either freelance sewing gigs or teaching sewing. So I don't take buying machines, and quality servicing for granted What I love the most about Luke's is they really make an effort to get to know their customers and they really know their products. Over the years shopping there, they have taken the time to get to know me and my sewing needs. When it is time for my yearly servicing, or when I am ready to upgrade machines, they know exactly how to help me! When I bought my amazing Elna Excellence 720 a few years ago, upon their recommendation, - - it qualified me to be in the Luke's sewing club, which gives me a discount on servicing and lending me a loaner machine on top of a lot of other really great perks. The last time I took it in to be serviced they had it calibrated to a clear monofilament thread that I use most and it made my machine even better (which I didn't think was possible)! One of the places I teach sewing is a club called Sew Much More, which brings sewing to youth in high risk, low income settings to help them build confidence and resilience while learning a skill (sewing). When I told Margaret about the club, without missing a beat, she offered to donate 4 machines! We truly could not have started the club with out Luke's incredibly generous support, and their belief in sewing's ability to make a difference for young people. When I went to pick up the machines Margaret had prepared a little gift bag with thread, and a nice pair of sewing scissors and extra bobbins for the students to use. I was blow away by their commitment to bettering their community through sewing. If you think it couldn't get better, often times when I go in they have a tray of cookies to offer their customers! That is my husband's favorite part:) I highly recommend Luke's for all of your sewing machine needs. read more

I took the machine back the very next day, but they said no refunds. Look closely at the receipt you have to sign when you buy anything. They only exchange, don't take do refunds. This is the 3rd time I have tried to do business with this company. First time, I bought a part for a sewing machine. OK, that was fine. I dealt with the sewing machine tech in the back. 2nd time, I was trying out a sewing machine. Margaret, the sales lady, exerted such high sales pressure and treated me nasty when I told her I had to discuss it with my hubby first. She made me so mad I didn't go back there until I called this week. 3rd Time, I called looking for a used Kenmore sewing machine. I knew exactly what I wanted. I told her I wanted a free arm Kenmore that was a model in the 158 series. She told me she had a Kenmore. Then she told me White and Elna made Kenmores and she had a White she could sell me. Margaret (again!) told me that she knows sewing machines and they were the same. (they aren't) As a collector, I do know that Kenmore had other companies make their machines. But the first 3 numbers of the model number tell who made them. 117. indicates White Sewing Machine Co. 120. indicates New Process Gear Co., later bought by Chrysler 516. indicates Gritzner Kaiser (the famous "Lady Kenmore") 158. indicates Jaguar/Maruzen 148. indicates Soryu 385. indicates Janome, mostly made in Taiwan So you can see that Margaret was trying to do a bait and switch on me and doesn't know sewing machines. The 158 series and 148 series are the ones I am concentrating collecting. Strike 3, You're OUT!! Never am I going to call or go back again. This is my experience with the Lukes Sewing Center in Elsmere, KY. I have not gone to the other locations. read more

The WORST customer service ever. The owner's wife was disrespectful and condescending because I brought my Brother sewing machine in for a repair. She told me my machine was cheap and that was "just the way it is". She tried high pressure sales tactics to get me to finance a new machine. She was "sorry" I couldn't afford a better machine. Luke's built this company on ripping off their customers and being rude and disrespectful. Don't sign their estimate unless you want to be forced to pay for a service you don't need or want. They also charged more for the part than what was in the contract. They said either pay what we want or leave it. I used to work at Luke's in LAWRENCEBURG years ago and he told me if a customer can't figure out why her machine won't work and you notice that the needle is in backward, he said don't tell them that but get them for a tuneup or whatever else you can. They are dishonest and rude. What was supposed to take a week took a month and a half. They gave me the run around and didn't even tell me my machine was finished and didn't have a reason why. Never ever again. My friends are spreading the word and found another person that was ripped off by them. More people need to get the word out. read more

I learned of a sewing class that was scheduled to be held at the Elsmere location and called to sign up. The man who answered the phone told me he'd be happy to sign me up, then asked me where I bought my machine. When he found out I didn't buy it from them, he asked me why. Then he put me on hold, and a lady came on and asked me why I didn't buy my machine from Luke's. I to,d her that wasn't why I was calling - I wanted to register for a class being held there by a national design company. The lady told me she'd have to put me on a waiting list! I have filed complaints with both the BBB and Anita Goodesign who is running the class. The reviews about this place are accurate which is why I didn't buy from them in the first place. Beware of shopping there. The manager is rude, the sales people evade and no one will help you. I made a purchase on Saturday and, unfortunately, had to cancel the order on Tuesday when they reopened. They refused to cancel the order and would not help me in any way. My friend made a very large purchase of a used machine that we later found out was advertised at 50% off and that is most certainly not what she got. Do not trust these people. read more
