This place has been on my yelp bookmark for so long and I finally got to go with some of my friends. Be warned the wait on a weekend is really long, we came at almost 12 and waited an hr and 20. My friend ordered the french omelette it came with toast and a salad. She gave it four stars, the omelette was fluffy and creamy inside. She's not a big egg person but still enjoyed it. She loved the side salad it was simple and tasty and sweet. The bread was tasty and savory, she said she'd recommend getting a side dish of sourdough if your meal doesn't come with it. My other friend ordered the yogurt with granola she said it too much granola, more granola with a side of yogurt. We also ordered the side of french toast and it was delicious 10/10 we all agreed it was so good. The sauce made it feel like a natural sweet and the bread was not soggy, which I liked. The little white sauce on the side was also really good. Definitely come back for that. I brought my team here for breakfast this morning. We had a party of 11. We came in around 9:30 and had about a 30 minute wait, so that was about what one would expect. The service and food was not at all what we expected because it was substantially better. My Danish was perfect with light, flaky, sweet layers. All of my party was very impressed with the quality of the food and atmosphere. They have an updated policy where they had a gratuity to the check and call it a service charge on their menu, but then give a note card that explains that this allows them to pay their employees a reasonable wage rather than rely on tip culture. Unfortunately, because they don't explain this prior to us paying our bill, we thought the service charge went to the restaurant and double tipped. I am glad this went to the servers, but it isn't fair to my team's budgets. Overall, this place was a good experience and if I'm ever back in Chicago, I will dine here again read more

Amazing brunch place!! I came on a Friday morning around 9:30am and was seated immediately. The restaurant started filling up pretty quickly during our meal, so I would recommend coming earlier if you don't want to wait. Buckwheat Crepe (5/5): You have to try this! The crepe is fluffy and very slightly sweet, which pairs super well with the savory duck confit. "The Royal" Lula Breakfast Sandwich Series (5/5): When this arrived, I was a little disappointed because it looked very plain. However, I changed my mind after taking my first bite. It may look plain and boring but it definitely does not taste that way. I finished this so fast and was sad that it wasn't larger. Service was quick and attentive. My mom has had this place on her bucket list for FOREVER. It's on all the lists for best brunch in Chicago and it certainly lived up to the hype! My parents and I got here around 1pm last Sunday. It was full and we were told it would be a 45 min-1 hour wait. They said to check back in 30 min. We decided to wait on the sidewalk outside the restaurant since it was a beautiful day anyway and didn't want to miss a table! A table inside was available for us after about 30 min but my parents really wanted to eat on their patio. That took about 15-20 min longer. Their patio is pretty cute and dog-friendly. A lot of people were out with their pups, but luckily (for my mom) we got a table on the side (my mom's afraid of dogs). Food: EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! We ordered different items and shared a little bit with each other. The menu has a good amount of items to choose from, both a specials menu and a café menu. Whole wheat French toast- Sweet but not overly rich. The white chocolate anglaise and rhubarb compote work well together. Buckwheat crepe with duck confit- Interesting texture and beautiful presentation. Great flavors. "the Royale" breakfast sandwich- Something about the bun, cheese, and sauce really did it for us. Pork patties on the side- Yummy! For drinks I ordered the Time Burns Bright. It came in a tiny class but it was strong. Thank goodness. My dad got an iced coffee. He said it was fine. The only downside was that service was kind of slow, even just waiting to get our drinks. Two different people also asked my dad if he wanted cream with his coffee and neither one brought it. So glad I was suggested lula! My server Rikki was a great host for our first visit here, leaving us wanting to come back for more. The dining room had a great atmosphere, very homely, yet unique. Every bite was amazing and I genuinely could not get enough. Recommend the beet bruschetta and chickpea frites, which I saw on just about every table. The pasta yiayia was unexpectedly amazing. I didn't know what to think since it seems like a sweet pasta, but the flavors went to get her so well and paired nicely with the caesar salad, which was very citrusy. Went here for post-run brunch downtown with some girl friends. We had a party of seven and were worried about them being able to accommodate us given they do not take reservations for brunch but the space is much larger than I was expecting and we were lucky enough to be seated indoors right away. There is also outdoor seating, which would probably be nice with a smaller party as well as a separate indoor seating section. Their cocktails are interesting if not incredibly fun if you're feeling adventurous to try something a little boozy for breakfast. I had the smoked trout scramble, which was tasty although I will admit that I eyed my one of my friends' classic breakfast burrito much of the time! Topped it off with the sweet corn ice cream, which was delicious. Water and coffee were provided regularly. Staff was nice and considerate. They add a 20% service fee to the check, which I didn't mind/thought was reasonable for employees. Would love to come here again. read more

Wonderful restaurant. This felt like a true farm to table experience with the freshest ingredients and aesthetic of the restaurant. We ate here for dinner and tried the pasta yia yia, baked French feta, tomato salad, and another dish I'm forgetting that was on the specials menu. Our server was so friendly and helpful with picking out dishes, we sat outside when the weather was perfect, I love the Logan Square area where the restaurant is located, and the food tasted like something out of an Alice Waters cookbook. While Lula is not my regular spot due to a very long wait for a table, I enjoy it once in a while. I like the people who work there, always very nice and friendly which is super important. I highly recommend the trout scramble. If you like sugar (who doesn't?), French toast has abundance of it. This is a very good cafe especially for the first time. The food and service has been constantly good but the last 3 times that I was there, the waiting outside part was starting to overshadow the food quality. We waited probably over an hour to seat a group of 4. The menu is pretty good still and versatile. This is a pretty nice spot for a neighborhood brunch when you have visitors but it's not been our most frequent dining out choice mostly because of the wait. The polenta was very rich and a little too salty for me. The French toast was unique. The middle was nice and fluffy but the crust was very dry. The tomato toast was exceptional even though it was simple The breakfast sandwich was different than any sandwich I've had. Very tasty but I think it could have used a little more spice or hot sauce The pastries were a great deal which was 3 for $12! All very good especially the matcha cake. Came here to celebrate a birthday brunch and it was delicious! They don't take reservations for brunch or lunch so be prepared to wait. For our party of four on a Sunday around noon, we waited about an hour and a half. We ordered dishes to share which included the miso caramel French toast, the "royale" sandwich, shakshouka, and pasta yiayia. All were excellent and I would recommend. The pasta was unique with the touch of cinnamon but the cinnamon wasn't overbearing and a nice touch to round out the other flavors of garlic and feta. The service was great and we never had to ask for more water because they were on top of that and clearing our plates. They did forget about our French toast order but it was brought out fresh and we didn't have to wait too long so it wasn't a big deal. The atmosphere is lively but not too loud. I still remember the cozy, beautifully neat and detailed interior as though you're visiting your grandma's home, as well as fantastic food and drink options but I don't know why I uploaded the photos and forgot to follow up with a review. We were preparing for a long day filled with drinking and eating, and breakfast wasn't going to get in the way of it. DRINKS 5/5: My friend ordered an Apres-Midi and I got a Love on Delivery. Both cocktails. I can't find the drink descriptions online anymore as I'm sure the menu has changed but I remember mine as being milky with some hint of banana and mixed with a strong liquor. Definitely a sipping type of drink especially for breakfast, but so delicious and it warmed me up for the cold weekend ahead! BREAKFAST: We shared two items but I couldn't find the name of mine online even back then especially since it was a seasonal item but the ingredients are what intrigued me: grits, eggs, pistachio, pesto, olives and lemon. If you see the picture you can tell it looks like a soup but it was warm and just too tangy for me. The bread on the side was nice to balance out the flavor. COCONUT BRIOCHE FRENCH TOAST 5/5: Picture this: banana pastry cream, macaroons and kaffir lime. How could you even pass that up? It was phenomenal. The service was insanely prompt and friendly. I was in Chicago for a Wilco concert and saw that the chef, Jason Hammel, was nominated for Best Chef Great Lakes by the James Beard Foundation so wanted to give this restaurant a try. Boy am I glad we did! We were promptly seated with a view of the open and bustling kitchen. We had cocktails that were delicious. Our server explained the menu has 2 sides that includes staples they have served since opening in 1999 and on the other side are specials utilizing seasonal ingredients. We decided to share 4 menu items to try a bit of everything. The baked French feta was a flavor bomb in my mouth with just the right amount of heat from the jalapeño basil oil and that grilled bread was out of this world! The salad was interesting with confit potatoes and white asparagus. Both pastas were divine.
