It's on the pricier side (~$20-30+ per entree), but with a casual ambiance (a pro or con depending who you ask). However, the food is top notch and service was great as well. Upon recommendation by our server, I ordered the paella and my boyfriend ordered the short rib dish. I've had some dried out paella in the past, so was skeptical but this was so delicious, saucy, and flavorful. It had a little bit of everything with protein, veggies, and rice. Delicious Food, Slow Service I met up with a good friend to catch up over breakfast and decided to check out Dell Rooster at 1825 W. Chicago Ave. First, let me say that this place is beautiful. The restaurant has a warm Mexican-inspired interior, cozy booth seating, and large bay windows that bring in plenty of natural light. I even remember noticing how clean the bathrooms were, which is always a good sign. Overall, the atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable. The hardest part of the experience was deciding what to order because so much of the menu looked good. Lately, I've been making more of an effort to try sweet breakfast items, so I ordered the pancakes while my friend got the French toast. Both were excellent, though I have to admit the French toast may have had a slight edge. I also ordered breakfast tacos, which I hadn't had in quite some time, and they were absolutely delicious. The food was easily the highlight of the visit. The only downside was the service. Our waitress seemed very kind, but there were a few communication issues. For example, I asked whether they had decaf coffee and was told no. I then asked if they had any caffeine-free teas and was told no again, only for her to later mention chamomile tea. When I explained that chamomile is naturally caffeine-free, she seemed genuinely surprised. It was an odd interaction, but not a major issue. The service was also a bit slow throughout the meal, which was really the only thing that kept this experience from being even better. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back. Tomatoey and oniony, soupy finish with all the great saffron paella smells and flavors. They have indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice but it's basically a bar so ambiance was lacking. Food was great - we started with the rabos encendidos and don't sleep on this - the perfect combination, packed with flavor! I also got the papas con chorizo, which was very tasty. For drinks, they have a full bar but not espresso offerings so we just hopped over to a nearby coffeeshop after our meal. Service was ok, a little slow but we weren't in a hurry so no big deal. Came to this spot for Saturday brunch (around 11am) with no reservation and was able to be sat within 10min. From the name to interior design, the spot was very Latin. The spot was spacious and the restaurant was filled with customers but not hectic. Not pictured but we shared an oxtail plantain appetizer that was savory with a hint of sweetness and definitely worth trying. I would have it as a main dish tbh. Our main entrees were the torta and chilaquiles. They had similar color make up as the oxtail dish since they were all red sauce base. Both rich in flavor and heavy in meal. I am new to chilaquiles but the tortilla chips were not soggy and had a nice crisp for me to enjoy the entire plate. Stopped in for brunch on a recent Sunday as a good friend suggested we check it out as we like to try spots we havent checked out. Small mom and pop joint which is usually preferred and I believe its classified as latin fusion cuisine. Decor looks very much like you're in a latin food spot. They make a good mezcal old fashioned here, but I very much enjoyed the mango rico which is mango infused rum, lime juice, and mango puree. Sounds sweet as hell but not too sweet. All the apps/first bites looked great but we had to start with the Rabo Encendido which is cuban style braised oxtail, pickled onions, chipotle aioli and queso fresco on top of plaintains...outstanding!!! Melts in ya damn mouth! I almost didnt wanna order anything else after eating that...woooo! I decided to go with the Rooster & Sons Enchiladas...was pretty good. This place is a hidden gem! Delicious food for starters. The short rib fell apart beautifully. The dates were so yummy. The staff were super friendly and efficient. We made a reservation for dinner before a concert at United Center. This place is only 7 minutes away. So we had a really good dinner, great drinks and were able to easily hop out over to the concert. They have tables and booths available. We found street parking right outside the door. Ventured here for restaurant week. Restaurant has been on my radar for a while. We were lured by the menu as who doesn't enjoy short rib. For brunch we ordered sangria, fig appetizer, papas bravas, chicken/waffles and short rib skillet. The brunch choices were good. Husband finished his whole plate, I took some leftover home and put on a corn tortilla next morning. We also got to sample dessert with restaurant week. Both items were enjoyable. My two friends and I decided to try this year's Chicago Restaurant Week's $30 Brunch menu. We all ordered the papas bravas, the short rib skillet, and the chocolate Abuelita tres leches cake. Everything was delicious, and the portion sizes were very generous, making the brunch menu well worth the $30. The servers did a great job of being accommodating while still giving us enough privacy to catch up. The restaurant was really chill, so it was perfect for us. Our only feedback is to use less star anise in the café de olla and to add more piloncillo. The piñata drink was good though! All in all, we would come back to try other items on the menu. This was my second time trying Dell Rooster and this place still holds up! Originally I came for dinner but this time I tried their slightly different brunch menu. I think that I confidently say that this is one of my top 3 restaurants of ALL TIME. The coconut shrimp and oxtail plantain starters could've been standalone plates. We ended up here on a Saturday morning. There was no wait, and upon walking in, I liked the vibe of this place. The decor was like a kitschy breakfast place. I tried to order coffee, but they only had Café de Olla. I'm sure it is good, but I don't like sugar in my coffee. So, heads up, there is no regular or coffee variety. We started with warm stuffed dates. They were excellent. They came with this red sauce that really added to it. I had the short rib breakfast. It was good, but there could have been more meat. Unfortunately, there were too many peppers. My wife and I split our dishes. She had the Jabaritto, which was good but also lacked meat. My son had the chilequilles and had no complaints. We also split a side of sweet plantains with cheese. This is the first time I have had them with cheese, and they were terrific. Our server was attentive. OK, so I had heard about this place a lot and decided to go here for a restaurant week lunch with my boyfriend. I was very excited and we drove almost 30 minutes to get here. The food was pretty good overall. We tried the dates and the potatoes bravas. The dates were definitely the star here. Then we tried the short rib skillet and the chicken and waffles. Chicken and waffles were great and the skillet was fine pretty flavorless. Finally for the desserts, we tried the Panna cotta and the triplets and both were honestly bad. No flavor and just tasted off. No, normally I would say that this restaurant was fine but quite literally the service was horrible. We arrived at 1:45 PM on a Saturday and lunch took 2 1/2 hours at one point the restaurant was almost empty and it still took 15 minutes to get our dessert delivered to our table when it was just sitting on the warming counter. I will say you get a lot of food for what you order. The lechon can easily serve 2 people. The lechon was tender and perfectly cook. Something's I have a personal preference with, but it was absolutely delicious. My partner had the skirt steak and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. For dessert we went with the tres leches cake. I loved their take on it. Right before we were almost done the chef/ I believe owner came out to talk to us, so that was really nice. Only thing I will say is the service is a little slow so be patient, again the day I went it was just 1 server who does everything. I had a great time at Dell' Rooster! The decorations were colorful and the lighting set up a unique ambiance. I came here for Chicago Restaurant week and the food quality and portions blew me away! I started with the Papas Bravas which had a semi-soft potato with a crunch in the outer part. The sauce drizzled on it was fantastic. Next, I got the Short Rib Skillet which was full of flavors, different vegetable, aromas, and a great quantity of short rib. Overall Thoughts: This is a cute spot in West Town for creative Latin American fusion dishes. We made a reservation for a Saturday night, but it wasn't too crowded and you could've easily walked in without one. Though pricey (total price ~$50 per person), the portions were large and I think many of the dishes were worth the price in taste and quality. True to its name, it's decorated with a strong rooster theme throughout. The service was very friendly and reasonably quick. This is a spot I'd love to come back to on a special or splurge occasion to try more of their menu. Food I tried: - Rabo Encendido (4.6/5): This was excellent and flavorful, with the perfect blend of sweet and savory flavors, soft and creamy textures... a must-try appetizer for sure. - Short Rib Barbacoa (4.7/5): Ahh this was my favorite dish here. The grits were so creamy and meat was so tender, just an amazing mix of textures and flavors all around. - Bife a Caballo (Medium) (4/5): The steak was just okay, but we should've ordered medium rare instead of medium, which was a lot tougher and drier than expected. And unlike many others, both menus are available. The flavor and attention to preparation make this a one star Michelin restaurant disguised as a casual Latin fusion storefront. Rado Escondido beautifully prepared-a full appetizer enough for 2, Rooster & Waffles enhanced with just a dab of hot sauce (very) requested on the side, and the Tres Leches cake was the best Tres Leches dessert ever. Right away, you'll notice all the rooster and hen decor inside - they really stuck to the theme, lol. We were seated right away because I had a reservation already. We had a lovely waitress who suggested the chilaquiles among other items. We tried the papas bravas and warm stuffed dates for appetizers. Those arrived pretty quickly, and they were SO GOOD! We also ordered the chilaquiles and Guanatos style torta ahogada, which took a really long time to arrive at our table. They had really good music playing, which kept our mood upbeat, and our waitress did check in on us. The food was totally worth the wait!! It was amazing! And by the time our food arrived, the restaurant was filling up with more patrons so you know it's good! Side tip - be sure to ask for the homemade hot sauce. I didn't see it on the menu, but I'd asked for some hot sauce with my chilaquiles, and it was perfectly spicy and so flavorful. The food overall was so awesome. I honestly can't wait to go back and try the dinner menu. The ambiance is inviting and cozy! I felt like I went over to a relatives house for some good home cooked food from all over Latin America. We appreciated the variety and everything was on point!
