Our dining experience was a very mixed bag; but only 3 stars for the entrees. We ordered the short ribs and the scallops. The short rib had a small area of tenderness the rest was tough and stringy, the noodles were pan fried hard and chewy but the flavor was good. The scallops were average, not soft and tender, the risotto was too tangy with a citrus lemon flavor. The service was 5 stars, great. The lobster escargot was great. The pork belly bun was average. The cheddar jalepeno biscuit was delicious. The price for what was served was over priced. We don't mind spending more for a great dining experience but this was a mixed bag....disappointed. Came here while in town on a work trip, my coworker did some researching and came across this place to host our annual fancy dinner. What a great choice! Definitely do a reservation, especially if you have more than 3 people in your group. We had 8 people so they had to put a few tables together. It's not a large restaurant inside but they do have an outside area that can accommodate. They were ready for our group at 7pm so no problems with the reservation. Staff was very friendly with greetings, sitting us, providing menus, and starting off on drinks. The menu looked delicious so it was a little tough to figure out what to start off for appetizers for our group and moving on to the main courses. We all started off with a few bowls of the "Fried Calamari". It's served in a bowl like a salad as it has some salad type of mix, some small thin noodles all tossed in this Thai citrus glaze. It was very flavorful,a nice starter, light & refreshing, we had a hard time sharing because it was so good. Before my entree, I started off with a bowl of the "White Corn Soup". Dang, this was very delicious as well, very pretty looking bowl of corn soup, nicely presented, not overly creamy, chunks of corn like it was cut from the cob, and their corn cracklin' was super delicious! I wanted another bowl after but had to control myself in public. As for my main, I decided to get the "Onion-Chili Crusted Short Rib". Love me a short rib so that's what I went with. It was very delicious! The short rib was super flavorful, Asian inspired flavor, super tender and fall apart when you pick it up on your fork. You get 2 pretty good sized chunks of short rib, some tamarind crispy noodles, maitake mushrooms, I think it was broccoli rabe which was tasty, crisp onion bits(shallots), and some other little toppings. Dang, this was good! Staff and service was fine, attentive on water, drinks, clearing plates etc. Prices are on the high side so be sure to check out some of the photos for the menu on Yelp beforehand. Be prepared to spend about 2 + hours for dinner, at least for my group, the staff and kitchen seems to pace you, as they will take drink orders first, give you a lot of time to select your meal, give you time to eat between courses etc. It seems like the pacing helps out the kitchen to work on each table so everyone gets their food timely etc. Their process works for me because I didn't feel rushed to eat all the food all at the same time, gives you time in between courses to relax for a few, have drinks, talk etc. I didn't wonder what is taking so long nor did I feel I was hungry in between courses. Overall, glad we came by, we spoke about coming back again next year when we are in town again for work. I wouldn't wear like board shorts and a t-shirt, so have a little decorum and dress a little nicely for dinner. In my opinion, it's not really fine dining feel as it was relaxing and not stuffy, but it's definitely a nice restaurant with some fancy delicious foods, at least the vibe to me felt more bistro type. Tonight was our first night that we were disappointed. Maybe because the health inspectors were there, but I am not so sure. The appetizers were amazing, and costly but so worth it. It took forever to get soup and a salad. The entrees took even longer. I had the Red Grouper it was Just ok. Actually tasteless. Hubby had the rib eye. HVAC blasting hot, off set by blizzard conditions every time the door opened. You used to enter into a foyer. Now only entrance blasts out the bar. Brought a very special bottle of wine to commentate the occasion. They don't do corkage! Normally $25, I offered $50. Wouldn't even consider it. Who cares about the customer! We particularly enjoyed the fois gras, the ribeye carpaccio, and the baked lobster a la escargot. Having lived here my entire life, which is much longer than the 24-years since Lulou's opened in '98, I'm embarrassed to say this is my first visit. I'm also glad I finally figured out how to make a confirmed visit possible. Admittedly, I struggle with places that don't make it as easy as possible to make reservations. I like to call and speak with someone, but I'll settle for an online reservation system if I must. What I don't like is having to call and get a busy signal for the first few efforts, then go hunting for online reservations, which don't exist for Lulou's, only to find a website that's more like a virtual poster for the venue than a user friendly wealth of information we've all become so accustomed to. I finally got to a voicemail, where the instructions were clear - leave your name, phone #, number in your party, and a couple preferred reservation times for them to choose from. I actually called for & got a reservation on the same day, so that felt like a win for sure! Coleen called back around 1pm to confirm our reservation time. Now on to the important stuff - the dining experience! First of all - the interior design is fabulous. I love the open beam high ceilings with festive lights draped over iron beams, rock grate counter wall at kitchen pickup area, sweet little garden seating area (not used this night as there were rain clouds looming in the distance), a quaint bar area where they also serve meals, incase you aren't successful in getting a reservation for the dining room, and a wild jailhouse restroom with slightly intimidating translucent glass wall panels. The staff were light on words, heavy on presence and attention to details. We got fresh utensils after each course, which was oddly satisfying. Not worrying about where to set that dirty fork is a much bigger gift than you might know if you've never experienced that level of service before. The vibe was relaxed, quieter (MUCH quieter than their sister restaurant - Kauboi Izakaya), intimate. Very soft lighting, very clean, very comfortable. The large wall of windows allowed for a good amount of natural lighting. I might have struggled to read the menu had we not been seated next to that big window during daylight hours. The food...very well thought out, with interesting and rarely found ingredients (rarely found on menus). The combination of flavors paired with their plating made for beautiful presentation. Each plate felt like a piece of art. And tasted equally as divine. We started with the pork buns & chile relleno. I insisted on the pork buns based on past diners reviews of same. And they weren't wrong. It's crazy how such a simple dish can be so delightful when a little extra love is put into it. The pickled cucumber was incredible. I would have enjoyed 2-3 of those on the bun, instead of just the 1. The relleno was unique with battered & fried shrimp on a poblano topped with a yummy sauce. Moving on to the salad - we opted for the beet & goat cheese salad. Please see the menu for the full description. Just know this, if you like cheese & beets, this salad is a must. You get the equivalent of a half log of goat cheese rolled in pistachios and set on toasted garlic bread with a side salad of "intimidating greens" (I love that description), and some sliced beets. Absolutely delicious. For the main course, I had the seared scallops, which had fiddlehead fern that were delicious with the scallops. They added a light flavor that was perfect. My husband had the lobster mafaldine, which was rich in flavors & lobster. Mafaldine noodles are essentially lasagna noodle edges, so long wide noodles to grab all that sauce & flavor in every bite. He also enjoyed the Pilsner they had, Mama's Little Yella Pils...ha! I'm sharing the check because...it's the little things. Check out that beautifully handwritten itemized list. Bottom line? Go to Lulou's. It's beautiful, elegant but relaxed, and delicious. Oh yes, and they have an impressive wine list (impressive quality). read more

This was our first time dining here and we were celebrating a birthday. The printed menu was a nice touch but there were highs and there were lows. After three courses each (there were only two of us) and drinks our bill was almost 300.00 (including tip). So with that in mind, there should not have been any lows in my opinion. Having never been the first thing I wanted to do was learn about the place. I could not locate a website or any real meaningful social media. Sure they have a facebook page but it's lacking real information. To make a reservation you have to leave a message and wait until someone gets back to you. If there is a better way, I'd love to know about it. Finally someone did call back and I got my requested time/day. I asked to be seated in the back and our server was nice but did not know about all the ingredients or questions we asked. We ended up starting with the crab and pork bun appetizers. Crab was decedent and delicious and the pork buns were ok but not something I would order again. We moved on to salads. Warm goat cheese and the mushroom salad. Both were excellent however the bread on the goat cheese one was burned around the edges. It was dark in the back so I was not completely sure but once we got home and I went to reheat the left overs I could see it was black. That should not have been put on the plate. Our mains were the Black Sea Bass which was ok and the Short Ribs. On that one I asked for a different vegetable as I did not like broccoli. The server asked the chef and they offered green beans instead. Not my favorite but ok and I asked for them to add some sunchokes. These also came out absolutely burned. Black. How and why did those go on the plate. The chef who cooked them, the server who picks up the plate, one of them should have fixed that. We ordered wine and drinks. I gave them ingredients and asked them to have the bartender make something up and it was great. I ended up with three before the night was done. I know this place is a long standing restaurant in Reno and I respect that but putting burned food on the plate is not ok to me. Having an unclear and uncertain reservation process is odd as well. During our entire meal, we were the only ones seating in the back room. That was great for us but that's lost revenue for them. Simple changes in their process would fill those tables. We ate during what I would think would be prime time, 7:00 to 8:00 on a Saturday Night. I think the food is excellent overall but with the issues we had and the cost of eating there, I'll probably skip this one in the future. I've had meals just as good in Reno that were executed flawlessly. read more

You can call ahead with your reservation and ask to have something written on the menu like Happy Birthday (Name)! Rachelle was my waitress and she was super sweet, surprising my boyfriend with dessert for his birthday. I enjoyed my meal, the lobster spaghetti. It was so soft and perfectly seasoned. Rushed us out the door and disappointing service. We had friends in town and wanted to take them somewhere special. We had not been to Lulou's in a while and thought it would be a great place to show off to our friends. We were a 7:45 pm seating so we arrived a little early and grabbed a cocktail at the bar. We were told our table was ready and we sat down. Our server immediately came to the table and asked us if we would like a cocktail. We still had full drinks so we told him we were fine but we did bring two bottles of wine and asked if he would open one to let it breathe. We didn't realize that we couldn't bring our own wine (even though they didn't carry the wine we brought). Our waiter opened our bottle of wine and later got in trouble for doing so. We asked 3 times to get wine glasses which he finally brought. We were rushed into ordering appetizers and he kept asking us if we were ready to order dinner. We told him that we were going to enjoy our appetizers and we would order after they came. Appetizers came and he asked if we were ready to order. We told we still needed a few more minutes and he then told us we needed to hurry up and order because the kitchen was closing??!! it was 8:30 and I felt that the kitchen should stay open until we were ready to order. If you are not willing to keep the kitchen open, don't accommodate a 7:45 pm reservation. We then ordered and asked our waiter to open and decant the second bottle of wine. That's when he informed us that he couldn't open a second bottle of wine as they were trying to recover from financial losses from Covid. We then went and talked to the owner and told her to charge us for a bottle of wine, but we wanted to open our special bottle of wine. With a little bit of pushback, she finally agreed. We rushed through our dinner and when the bill came, they charged us $120 corkage fee to open our wine. If you are that concerned about recovering from the pandemic, you should probably make guests feel welcome and not try to rush them when we would have gladly stayed and had after dinner drinks and possibly more wine. We left and went to have our after drinks at the Emerson which was wonderful. We probably will not return to LuLou's. read more

After all these years I finally dined here. The week before Christmas I discover the gentleman I am seeing is having a birthday three days before Christmas. He chooses Lulou's for his celebration dinner. The interior is rather cool- clean, sharp, but a little industrial. It works. There is a separate bar area from the dining room. For the next several months during Virginia Street construction, there is plenty of easy head in parking right out front. I like limited menus. They imply to me that much of the ingredients are going to be fresh. I also enjoy the open style kitchen, so you can watch the chef creating all the dishes- mmm the aromas too. We started with crab appetizer- almost a crab cake but not firm, it was served is a small cast iron skillet. I ate it like a hot dip on the fresh bread they brought. I saw on the menu foie gras and duck together- done !!! I enjoyed a perfectly med rare, well seasoned duck breast with a seared piece of foie gras on top. Heaven. The sides were roasted broccolini and a crab Mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese could have easily been a main dish- creamy and cheesy with bit of crab meat. The gentleman's ribeye, according to him was tender juicy and a nice medium. So much food, but when it's your birthday you still need dessert. I slipped the waiter a note that it was his birthday. So dessert came out with a candle. We shared a tart lemon layer dessert. If you like lemon this is your dessert- lots of brightness and pucker. The service the entire night was perfect. The ambience and decor is very modern--it makes me thing of a trendy restaurant you might find in the bay. The menu is interesting; just enough options without being overwhelming. The entire wait staff was attentive and friendly. I think my favorite part were the little details that created an experience--silverware placed just so, unique dinnerware, a handwritten bill. Small update after our last visit to LuLous. The New York Strip Steak is ****ing amazing. It has taken the crown that their ribeye had in all ways. The taste, the texture, the whole experience of eating that steak was amazing. It comes with potatoes o'gratin that you have to order to experience, it's served almost like lasagna but my description does it no favors. I'm in love. My wifes tilefish? Also amazing, rich, tender and perfectly cooked along with the most amazing bacon fried rice you'll ever eat (light and fluffy). It was a great experience. For those of you that want to experience why I like this place without spending an arm and a leg, just go to the bar - order your favorite drink along with their pork bun appetizers. Don't gobble it either, enjoy that piggy flavor slowly and carefully. It's like bacon that melts in your mouth. So yeah, I still love this place. My only gripe is the wine list selection is "OK" but could be a lot better. read more

I was looking for the best restaurant in Reno so I went here. This place can be interpreted to be one of the best eateries since it is the most expensive restaurant in northern Nevada however my conclusion at the end of the day is that Reno just doesn't do well with fancy things--but that's what makes Reno, Reno. Reno doesn't have Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Neiman Marcus, Fogo de Chão, etc. Reno is in the desert where you can play for cheap so why would anyone want to come here and spend a lot of money? If someone wants to go to the middle of the desert and do that, they'd go to Las Vegas. I knew this place wasn't the fanciest because, I know this must seem like an insult, but the chefs that you see in the open kitchen didn't look like they liked what they were doing. I know that's a straight up judgement, but that's what I think. Another big thing is that the menus are basically some laminated paper--not a nice leather bound card stock paper. To solidify that this isn't fine dining, they don't have prix fixe menu--it's all a la carte. I guess my expectations for a $$$$ are high, and this doesn't fit the bill. So, while this might be the most expensive restaurant in Reno, it's not really fine dining, in my honest opinion. If you want something extra special, go to Sacramento or the Bay Area for the real deal. Anyway, we went with the following items: Foie Gras, Ceviche, Short Ribs, and Ribeye. Everything was good--I especially liked the foie. The meat dishes weren't spectacular but they got the job done if you were looking for those flavors. I'm not sure if I would've gotten anything else but the meal was delicious and don't regret the calories. I would not consider this a gem in Reno and I would not recommend coming here unless you just want to spend a little extra on a some food that is probably isn't that much better than you'd get at a gastropub in Reno. I don't think Lulou's deserves any hype or the honor of being the best fine dining place in Reno. Reno has a lot of potential for some iron chefs to flourish, but as I mentioned, no one comes to Reno for fanciful treats so the market might be lackluster, for now. read more

Listen, I know I'm in the minority- people love this place. We came to celebrate Valentine's Day (a few days late to avoid the crowds). First off- the place is very pretentious. I have no problem paying inflated prices for a great experience and delicious food but it's just flat out not welcoming. Our server had no personalty, efficient but not warm at all. Next, they have no European reds on their wine list. Really heavy on California wines which means heavy on additive, toxins, and next-day headache. So I went for a French champagne. It was good, but he initially brought me the rosé by mistake. Next, it's one of those places that makes you order the whole dinner at once. Honestly we just weren't sure how much to order. Didn't know the portions sizes and wanted to sample our way through the menu until we were full. Again, this is just our preference. I understand this doesn't bother everyone. We got the charred octopus, the very spicy duck soup, and the Brussels sprouts and apple salad. All fantastic choices! But we ended with the onion chili rubbed short rib. It was tough and fatty, and when we tried to explain it to our server, he made no comment. There was no apology, no offer to replace it with something else, no recognition whatsoever that this $65 entree was basically inedible. I don't think we will be back. read more

Wonderful experience. I went to LuLous a few weeks ago for dinner. We had the pork buns, goat cheese and beet salad and for my entrée I had the antelope loin. Everything was delicious, seasonal, amazing. This was my first time, and I had high expectations. The server was lovely, very attentive. I read yelp reviews before going of course, and there were so many comments about they servers filling up your water at ton. That was the case for me too and I almost had to laugh because our guy was so on it, I never had an empty glass. Maybe a little overkill, but I wouldn't complain about being well hydrated. The wine was good, and my dinner was so filling that I skipped dessert. The atmosphere was what I expected, clean, classy. Our table was a little too close to the one next to it - or maybe the guy sitting there was just loud? I think I'd request a different table next time but it wasn't enough of an issue to make a big deal about it. I can't wait to go back and try some other dishes! read more

I have never felt so anxious to write a review. That's how disappointing and ripped off we feel. I have lived in Reno for a long time and have only been able to come here on very special occasions due to the extremely overpriced menu. The bartender was extremely miserable, unfriendly, and rude. She has no business being a bartender. I even told her it was my Birthday and she didn't even buy me a drink or dessert like everywhere else did. Guests should have fun, laugh, smile and feel welcome. We tried to order the duck soup to go and it came in a small plastic Tupperware half full of broth for like $29. I have eaten this soup here a few times and it's always in a bowl with greens and baby mushrooms floating. Never coming here again. Overpriced and an uncomfortable environment. read more
