I was in the Denver area for an overnight on business. I decided I would treat myself to some BBQ and a cold beer. The first place I went to was closed because they were out of food (can we all agree that is a bad business model?). Based on the Yelp reviews, I stopped at LuLu's in Louisville, CO. Cute town, unique restaurant and great service. I decided to sit inside, though the windows are all open and the sun is shining in. I was cheerfully greeted, seated and my waitress, Julia, was extremely helpful and very attentive throughout the meal. She was from Missouri, so we commiserated about the lack of collards on the menu. They had broccoli tossed in garlic, but no collard greens. I think that might get you shut down in Virginia. I started with the BBQ nachos, which are on special during happy hour. They are made with homemade chips, which were good. However, I could not taste the pork that was generously tossed with cheese, onions and lots of jalapeños. Not a hint of smoke. Uh oh....this might be a problem. No collards and no smoke. For my entree, I chose the "1/2 and 1/2 plate" with brisket, ribs, mac and cheese and fried okra. So, while my NoVa home isn't that far south, I think I know my BBQ and have established my street creed with my own smoker. LuLu did not bring it home for me. The brisket was tender, but tasted more like pot roast than anything coming off a smoker. No traditional smoke ring on the meat and very little flavor. The ribs were OK, but they lacked smoke flavor and were a bit on the chewy/tough/overcooked side. Mac and cheese was totally forgettable, and soupy. But the star of the night was the okra. It was nice and hot when it came out and was perfectly cooked. The okra, and Julia's excellent service, kept the third star for me. Maybe it was a bad night in the kitchen. Maybe the smoker isn't working right. Maybe my expectations for BBQ are too high. The atmosphere and the beer are perfect. The food.....is dull. Come on LuLu. Get that rub and hickory going. Find that cayenne shaker and give your meats some attention. This place has so much potential, it makes me sad to give three stars. Replacing collard greens with broccoli is a sure way to make me really sad. Nobody eats broccoli with Que. And soupy Mac and cheese. Sigh... read more

BBQ CAN-DO Now, Lulu's s the type of BBQ I can do! It's located near the rear of Main Street, Louisville. This good looking place has some real atmospheric appeal with just the right touch of festive and eclectic pops throughout the place. They have a good chunk of patio type seating, brisk indoor dining area, and a fun bar that peaks out to the back outdoor adult play area, if you will. Seems like a great night time affair where big kids can get loaded and toss some bottle caps around in the greenery. The service was kind and helpful. No one rubbed us any wrong way, which is nice. As for the offerings, they have a plentiful selection of beers and cocktails. Don't ask for Coors Lite, they don't have it here. A tiny set back but considering there are a ton of micro brews in Colorado, you have some other options to choose from. I'm all for supporting small and local micros! Don't think I forgot about the food. The portions aren't big nor do they serve it on a grand serving platter. Modest and good is what comes to mind. They don't snag your heart with big portions or fancy plates. No, no! They're efficient, so our food came right out considering there wasn't a huge over flow of patrons. The food was good. My BBQ tofu wasn't too bad, the brisket was tender, pulled pork killer, ribs falling off the bone, and sides made homestyle. Overall, we were satisfied with the flavors and price. Not the best we ever had but surely got our whiskers wet with BBQ goodness. They have daily specials and who knows, maybe I'll be by to grab some more grub to fill my families bellies! read more

Brisket was very good, no knife needed! First batch came out with half dried, but our waitress replaced with fresh ones after I pointed this out with no questions. Chicken wings were great. We also enjoyed fun drinks- housemade mango lemonade and prickly pear margarita. Sauces are in the sweet side. The entrees were good, but we can't recommend the sides. Of the sampler we tried, the fried okra was the best. Macaroni lacked flavor, sweet potato tots were very sweet and coleslaw was very plain (no sweet or tang). If you get the sides sampler, the dipping cheese for the tots will cost extra which seemed silly. Tip: Lulu's doesn't take reservations but you can call a little bit ahead and they will put you on the waitlist as you drive to the restaurant. This place was great! I'm picky about my BBQ but this was amazing. We shared plates so I was able to taste a lot. I love pulled pork but the brisket was the star! I was excited to give this place a try after reading all the reviews. I told my brother and his girlfriend about it and they met us there for dinner. Unfortunately, it was just not anything to write home about. They advertise being this amazing barbecue place, but the barbecue was a little dry. I rate a good barbecue place really by the sides, the macaroni and cheese had no flavor, the cornbread was kind of dry, and where is the greens? We cannot good barbecue without good home cooked collard greens, that have been cooked down for like a day and just melt in your mouth. They balance out the sweetness. read more

And not disappointed, by far the BEST meat we have ever had. My husband and I shared a 1/2 and 1/2 plate of tender, moist pulled pork, and brisket, melt in your mouth! PPO is a great addition of flavor. The sauces you can add, are very, very good not overly sweet or tangy, just right and so much flavor. First stop to Lulu's and we're so glad we stopped in. When we walked in on a Thursday night, every table, inside and out was filled. A table was cleared for us very quickly. We waited less than 5 minutes. Our server was very friendly and answered all of our questions. We ordered the buffalo tots, spicy chicken sandwich and a 1/2 plate. Everything came out hot and delicious. For such a packed place, we were pleasantly surprised how quickly (and accurately) everything came out. I love barbeque but this was average and then throw in poor service and it's just another average BBQ joint. My food was cold when it arrived,I had a combo plate so it was a variety of meats all average. Maybe it would have been good if it was hot or at least warm. I have since become a semi-regular at LULU's and my first visit must have been an anomaly . The waitress who served me on my first visit has never been seen on my recent visits. I go to LULU,s once or twice a month for their happy hour menu and a couple of Texas slushies ( bring a designated driver ). My son drives out from Denver once a month for the Saturday special Brisket Philly sandwich. I like to belly up to the bar for their happy hour but you have to get there early to do that. All in all this place is pleasant and has a good atmosphere, the food is good and the prices are reasonable especially the happy hour menu. I think it's just due to how they operate the kitchen/run out later in the evening. My daughter and I stopped in here for a quick lunch after a morning hike. What I didn't expect was how quick the lunch was. After only sitting for a minute water was given to us and food and drink order was made. Minutes later we were eating and drinking My daughter received the wrong order - but when we told staff - they left the wrong order and immediately brought the correct order. Most excellent. LuLu's BBQ is fantastic. Best ribs around, and the pork bbq is amazing. If you have a taste for spicy, their spicy bbq sauce will light your candle. I prefer their sweet style sauce, but all flavors are spot on. Baked beans are a can't miss, and the fried okra reminds me of being in North Carolina. I'm not a fan of their smoked wings - they are cooked fine, but are the really big kind that I just don't enjoy. But that's a super personal preference, and should discourage anyone from trying them if you like "big" wings. Lots of good bbq to choose from, but LuLu's gets my vote for best around Boulder!! read more

I drove through the wind and snow to get here. My first visit was about 2 1/2 years ago in the early fall. The patio was crowded and festive. Now that I am back in Boulder I had to come to Lulu's. Even on a snowy night I was met with a great aroma of bbq from the sidewalk. I was taking this order to go so I grabbed a seat at the bar and placed my order with Zakary. He's a super nice guy and he made me very happy about coming to Lulu's. I ordered a pound of brisket and 1/2 smoked chicken. After I paid the check Zakary had been informed by the kitchen that there may not be enough brisket for a pound of brisket. If there wasn't then Zakary would have them throw in a few ribs to make up for it since I already paid. I honestly do not know what a pound of brisket looks like but I appreciate Zakary letting me know that there may not be a full pound of brisket. They could have thrown in 3/4 of a pound and it would have been a pound to me. Anyway, they had enough for a full pound but if you see the picture it honestly looks like more than a pound of brisket and I had already eaten a couple of slices. So the brisket was very tender and did not need the bbq sauce although the zesty mustard bbq sauce went well with it. It was way too much brisket for one night but I can say that after one day of being in the fridge warming the brisket up in the microwave did not change the flavor. It was still delicious and tender. The smoked chicken was moist and I loved the hot and spicy bbq sauce with it. I truly wish that I would have got a larger order of the broccoli. It had so much flavor. I'll be in town for about four more days and I will probably be eating brisket each of those days. Thankful for the fridge and microwave in my room. I found this place to be better than average with nice decor. They have a very nice small town feel about them and are very family friendly. Great dining inside or outside options. The BBQ for me today was 1/2 & 1/2 plate. I chose ribs and brisket with slaw and a side salad. The salad came with the meal as opposed to before the meal. It was served in a small bowl w/ dressing on the side. They used a spring mix of greens with chopped tomatoes cucumbers and onions that was so refreshing. The ribs were meaty for st . Louis style and the rub was flavorful but not over the top. The brisket was almost room temperature and a bit dry as if it sat on the carving board for a long period as opposed to being stored in a combo oven between orders. The bark was brown throughout the center and there was no smoke ring whatsoever. I am not finding fault here as this may be a regional thing, right? I prefer my BBQ dry, but enjoyed the sauce on the brisket. I would definitely return for another shot at the ribs and pulled pork. read more

I enjoyed the brisket most. Great flavor. The hot sauce I can still taste in my mouth and it's making me smile and my mouth water at the same time. The Mac N Cheese passed my kid's "test"...it wasn't messed with too much and didn't look like same product from a box that was gotten at a local grocery store. The green beans side were great. The mashed potatoes and cole slaw were not bad, but compared to the great taste of everything else, it didn't fit. Both tasted kinda bland and I especially like cole slaw with more vinegar to give it a kick. If this review was just based on the food it would be a 4.5-5.0. BUT...the service. I got sent to a semi full bar to pick up my food from the bartender. I immediately saw a large bag sitting on a COOLER and next to a tub of ice with beer. Yep, that was my dinner...staying nice and cool. The bartender was busy so I saw a waitress and she pointed back to the bartender, "she will help you". Really? So 2 hostesses' and 1 waitress point me to probably the busiest person in the restaurant to help me and hopefully soon rescue my "freezing" food...not good and efficient service. I finally got her attention and yes, the "cooler bag" was mine. Lulu's charges a "togo charge" (see receipt photo). I can't recall EVER seeing that. As a resident of Louisville, I really wanted to like and support this local restaurant. Unfortunately, I found everything my partner and I ordered to be really mediocre. The service was lovely, but my ribs and brisket were both quite dry, and my partner was underwhelmed by his BBQ tofu (though we realize that tofu isn't exactly the forte of a BBQ restaurant). Unfortunately our sides were bland as well. The one bright spot was the fries we ordered- they were perfectly crispy and probably the only thing I would reorder in the future. read more

The BBQ pork is some of the best I've ever had. My wife and daughter agree. And the buns with it were also really good. The corn bread was good but had the density of a brick. So call that 4 star.
