This restaurant used to be a favorite, but beware! They need some time to recover! We went for an early dinner tonight and boy were we horror showed! The place had dirty carpets, sticky tables and a filthy bathroom. The food tasted so so, but we both are now have terribly unsettled tummy's, to put it lightly. What in the world? I was so excited to go here because the photos looked so good, but the taste is another story. Ordered the chicken pot pie, the inside was /so/ bland. Where's the salt and pepper!? It was all peas, almost no chicken, and the carrots pieces were chopped larger than the chicken. And of course the chicken itself was completely flavorless. Massive disappointment, especially after all the rave reviews. We also ordered the skillet cornbread starter, didn't know it was going to be heavily topped with cane sugar. Your mileage may vary, I personally disliked the top (I love a good savory cornbread sweetened with honey, not crunchy sugar). They also forgot to give us the honey butter until we asked, and it arrived cold & hard instead of a spreadable room temperature. I only tried a bite of the meatloaf, it tasted pretty good but it was a lot smaller than the photos. There was also barely any bacon on it? Overall, it was disappointing for the price. Moreover the service was just...odd. They were very good about refilling our drinks, but for some reason their gaze was always directed over our heads or to the side as they dropped off our plates without a word. Came into town to watch the Pageant of the Masters and found this restaurant walking distance away from the Festival. We did not have a reservation for dinner so they proceeded to seat us in the outside patio which actually turned out to be a MUCH better place to sit. The inside seemed dark and noisy. They had a good selection on their Menu but what caught my attention was their King Salmon. I decided to give it a try and and it was flavorful and cooked just right. Yum! Their fuzzy navel drink had just the right amount of sweetness. Tip: They give free dessert for birthday and if you want bread, you will need to ask for it. read more

Everything about this place is wonderful. The ambiance (we were seated hear the fireplace on a cool rainy evening), the lighting, the service, and certainly not least, the food. My wife and I stared by splitting a wonderful Pear and Arugula salad, which was an amazing mix of flavors accented by very creamy blue cheese crumbles. For entrees, my wife went with the meatloaf which was recommended in many reviews. She enjoyed it, although we would describe it as a BBQ sauce/smoky flavor vs burnt teriyaki as others have described it. Really good. I opted for the pan seared Hawaiian ahi which was perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth tender, and a wonderful mix of Asian flavors with ginger soy marinade and wasabi seasoned rice. So good. Came here for restaurant week with Roy. I may be the harsher critic but I am more generous on my rating. Atmosphere: Its slightly confusing. Its very dimly lit, but in the center of the room is the bar which was playing sports on the tv. Which the restaurant was super loud. Then their are little kids running around. So... I am not exactly sure what kind of atmosphere that they are aiming for. Service: I thought it totally sucked. I find it funny how roy and I both experience different services from the same table. Seriously, we didn't require much. but they lack on keeping me hydrated. They brought. us water and brought our drink. I order tea. I was never once offer a refill on my tea. So i finished my tea and I proceeded to drink my water. Both sat empty. food: I ordered the Clam chowder and the chicken pot pie. Which I regretted, my fault. They were both the same thing. one was clam base, the other was chicken base. The clam chowder was ok it had bacon in it., my only issues is that it had roux balls. My fiancé and I were in OC for his sister's graduation and it landed on the same weekend as Father's Day. We hadn't made any plans for Father's Day because his dad's work schedule changes weekly. Luckily, he was able to join us for brunch. My fiancé searched on OpenTable and came across Lumberyard. His mom said it was pretty good so we decided to give it a try. Lumberyard offered their regular lunch menu and Sunday Brunch menu. We all had brunch items. As a starter we ordered Skillet Corn Bread w/ honey butter. OMG it was amazing!!!! The corn bread is moist and packed with flavor. My fiancé had Chilaquiles and it was loaded w/sauce and cheese on top. He loved it! His dad went with Eggs Benedict and mentioned that there was a little spice. He doesn't eat spicy food at all so any type of zing, he'd notice. I ordered the Frittata which had LOTS of mushrooms, spinach, cheese, and bacon. Overall great brunch experience. Our server was attentive and friendly. The chicken is smoked and gives an unusual taste to the dish. The penne was cooked perfectly. I liked the portion size as it was enough to satisfy me. I did not bring home leftovers. I thought the service was great. I was surprised to read reviews describing the service as awful. The restaurant does get loud, but the music is played softly and the setting is nice. Vanessa H., Shane D. and I met up with fellow Yelpers Drew M., Donald S., Azya C., Nicole M., Andrew and Antoinette H. at the Lumberyard last night. We ordered drinks at the bar while waiting for the rest of the party to arrive. I had a glass of the Chateau St. Michelle Riesling ($8) which was 250ml, btw. A solid choice to begin the evening. We made our way to the table and perused the menu for food. Actually I had already scoped out the menu and had a general idea of what I wanted. Drew and I shared the cornbread ($6) and mac & cheese ($6). Out of the two, the cornbread was the most delightful with chunks of corn, jalapenos, and that delicious honey butter. Can I have some of that to go? It was so delicious. The mac & cheese was ok. It was saucier than I would have liked and soft, not al dente. The saving grace for it was the bacon, but as Drew pointed out, adding bacon is cheating. I ordered the chicken pot pie ($16). It was decadent with chunks of mushrooms, chicken, carrots, and celery in a lusciously creamy broth sealed underneath a brown pastry crust. I was able to try some of the meatloaf, beef stroganoff, halibut, sweet potato fries, and short ribs. Everything was really tasty. The beef stroganoff was not fork tender which I thought was disappointing. Nicole and Andrew ordered the Lumberyard Hog Heaven pie which was so very good with peanut butter mousse and chocolate inside a graham cracker crust topped with whipped cream. The pie sparked some interesting conversation, specifically from Shane D., who proclaimed something he could never really recover from if posted on the internet. The LUMBERYARD is a great place to go for lunch or dinner. When I have out-of-town guests, I like to take them to the LUMBERYARD for a great halibut sandwich or Cobb salad. My favorite happens to be the tuna melt on brioche. For dinner, I love their Dover sol (but it's not always on the menu). The hors d'oeuvres are also creative and delicious. So going there for a drink and appetizers works also. The owners of the LUMBERYARD have been in Laguna for decades, so they often have locals who never get tired of the food, drinks, or ambience. For those who like to sit at a bar and watch TV sports, this is a great place to go. On a beautiful day, there is a side courtyard, and there is free parking on Ocean Avenue behind the restaurant. The most recent time we were there was for a gathering of retired Thurston Middle School teachers who always love going to this local gem. The service is helpful in making choices, and they are always pleasant. If you haven't been in a while, it's time to go back! read more

This place has really grown into its own. I can't believe it's taken me so long to update my review. Their food and service are always spot on. This is one of our regular places to eat in Laguna. They have been really good with Covid as well. The yardBar setup is super cool, very euro chic. Also I think all of their prices are super fair and you get good value here now. Since my review a little over a year ago, I have become something of a Lumberyard regular, maybe even more than I'd like to admit... That said, I felt it was time to update my review to a high rating. The food at the Lumberyard is consistently good. I like the comfortable atmosphere and the variances in the menus, they have great lunch deals, a nice brunch, and excellent dinner choices. It's American comfort food done very well. The absolute best aspect of the Lumberyard is the service. I'm lucky enough to have Chad as my server often. Chad is excellent! He's the superstar of the lumberyard because he's always on point, always friendly, and he even says hello and makes sure we're taken care of even when he's not overseeing our table. The food was so delicious, it gave me wood. We came here on a whim, because my buddy's bday dinner plans got messed up. Friday night, 8 people, with no dinner reservations made it difficult for us to find a place to eat. Even though this place could accommodate our request, I wasn't very excited to eat here. American food? At a restaurant called "Lumberyard"? In a crummy rundown looking restaurant? They're lucky I'm hungry. Parking was a pain. We circled the block a couple times and found a parking garage (free) about 6 blocks from the restaurant. The outside of the building looks like something straight from Shrek - old looking cottage. The inside was really well done - A bit cozy, with a modern twist. We got seated with no problems at all. Since everyone was starving, we ordered a couple appetizers - Onion Rings, Calamari (fried), and the hummus trio. If you're here with a date, I would avoid the onion rings. They give you at least 4 onions worth of rings that'll guarantee no sexy time. Calamari was typical, nothing too special, besides this creamy tartar sauce that it comes with. Hummus was freshly made and it comes with a lot of stuff you can dip it with. It came with carrots, celery, tomatoes, and crostini's. Since I'm trying to slim down, I ended up opt'ed for the Dungeness Crabcake Salad. Wifey went with the Angel hair pasta with capers, olives, and artichoke hearts. The crabcake salad came with two reasonably sized cakes with a spicy aioli sauce. The salad featured baby arugula and grilled asparagus. Dressing was light and tossed in just the right amount. I took a couple bites of wifey's pasta and it was pretty legit. I didn't think such simple pasta could taste so good. I don't really remember what the others ordered, but every seemed to enjoy their food. For dessert, we ordered the apple cobbler, banana bread pudding, and the peanut butter cheese cake. Apple Cobbler was awesome. It had a warm, flaky pastry with generous chunks of apples and brown sugar - topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Banana bread pudding was decent. I'm not a fan of banana, but the dessert was well made. It wasn't too sweet, the bread pudding was moist, and the essence of banana wasn't too strong. Lastly, the peanut better cheesecake is a must for peanut butter cup lovers. I would recommend ordering a glass of milk to help wash this cheesecake down. It was really good, but too rich for my taste. (So much for slimming down) A little about my credentials: I first got into cooking & food when I was in college. After being rejected by numerous girls and getting zero action, I decided it was time for a change. I needed a new makeover to boost my geeky image. Having recently eaten at the Rooftop Lounge recently, I had fallen under the spell of Laguna Beach as a haven of moderately priced, atmospherically driven haunts appealing not only to the mouth, but to the eye as well. And although Lumberyard didn't completely destroy the spell, the glamor effect certainly wore off a little. I joined a lofty bunch of the best and brightest on Yelp for Vanessa H's Alphabet Series for the L edition, and by our powers combined we conquered most of the dishes on the menu. Favorites: The Cornbread was exquisite; a crispy top with light impressions of jalapeno, and a soft inside that played "splendidly" with the honey butter that accompanied. While there was a little dissent about how this dish fell on the pecking order of things, I could have gobbled up a pan of this and called it a night (which would have saved me a little $$$). The wine was also very affordable, and the selection was impressive as well. I didn't partake because my refined palette is set only for Pabst and they didn't serve it here. Going back to the Laguna Beach Glamor Spell, I found that I felt a little tingle of pain when I read the menu. With most mains moving in the 20-25 dollar range, a night out here with an app, some wine, and possibly a desert with a main course could easily cost you $100. So is this place worth $100 dollars? The decor is somewhat nifty, the main bar is cool (you could just skip dinner and drink wine here), and the location, well, it's not on the water. The service was pretty good, our server checked in with us often and actually gave us his opinion on dishes, which is much appreciated by yours truly. Desert was, fact, heavenly (the hog heaven pie), so much so that one of the members of our table might have gone to considerably questionable lengths to get himself some of that sweet, sweet... pie. Maybe it's the fact that I love hole in the wall joints, but I've had fish just as good for 7 dollars (Bear Flag or California Fish Grill), and my French Dip sandwich didn't even stay together, so I had to eat most of it with a fork to dip it. So unless you're here to come to a restaurant starting with L, you might want to consider some other options, because at this price range, you have a lot of them. 3.5 Stars read more

Came here for the first time 2/11/19. They have happy hour mon-fri from 3:30-6:30pm At the bar or on the patio. They have a pretty decent selection of appetizers and drinks available on the menu. We opted for the spinach-artichoke dip which was very tasty with just the right amount of chips. Usually we are always asking for extra chips when we order at other locations so it was nice that they have to standard ration figured out here. We also had the house salad which I felt the $7 price point was a bit high for size but it was overall just a good mixed green salad. Then we decided to split the chicken pot pie. I'm am not the chicken pot pie connoisseur but my friend is and she said it was delicious. Nice size bites of chicken, creamy. Good size chunks of veggies. Her only criticism was the crust. I really liked it, more because I'm not a super "bready" person but she said that since it was not the traditional pie where the crust is also underneath the she wish the pie crust topper was more traditional. Thick and flakey. Over all it was a good experience. If I had any constructive feedback it would be that the bartenders should stay behind the bar. The bartenders kept disappearing. I realize that there wasn't a large amount of people there but it appeared that whenever we wanted to order something, no one was back there to help us. Otherwise, everyone was very nice. Came here on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and it was pleasantly dead. Few tables occupied, but pretty quiet. I really liked the dark interior and large booths; I can imagine it's a great place to have dinner. We ordered the shrimp and wild rice salad and a burger & fries. I didn't try the burger but my salad was FANTASTIC. Huge, plump shrimp over a bed of wild rice and lots of diced avocado and shredded romaine lettuce leaves. This tasted fresh, healthy, and filling. I came to this restaurant when it was something else, and they definitely gutted the place inside, with a more modern decor. Walking around Laguna for Father's Day, we decided to grab some lunch somewhere, and walked in. The food itself was decent, except for what I ordered, which was pretty much scrambled eggs with tortilla chips in 'em. Cannot remember the exact name, but it was salty and disappointing. But the calamari, burger, sweet potato fries, and green beans were all pretty good. (Thanks family, for letting me pick off your plate!). The green beans were superb, probably the best thing I ate. Service wasn't that great, even though the place was not packed. Server was probably nursing a hangover or something. He forgot one of our appetizer orders, but did comp us a dessert, so I guess it worked out in the end. Decent lunch, about $100 for five of us (no drinks). read more

Very disappointed with our last visit. The cornbread appetizer was excellent, but that's about it. Our steak came out well done when it was ordered medium rare. It was so overdone that it could barely be sawed through with the knife. We told the waitress and she offered to send it back and replace it with another one. Steak #2 comes out and it is cooked better, but the quality of the meat was horrible. It had the texture of an old leather boot. Seriously. It was really, really bad. I would definitely avoid ordering a steak here. read more

Fantastic place! Great staff, nice ambiance, delicious food. It's Laguna Beach, so it's not exactly cheap, but it's certainly not overpriced. With most entrés $20-$35 and the food delicious, Lumberyard is well worth it. One way that I judge a restaurant is...when I think about the meal I had, do I want it again? My wife wanted steak dinner for NYE, and I did not feel like paying a premium for less choices, as one tends to get with NYE prix fixe options. So we came here, and had a lovely, uncrowded night. We split a pair of appetizers, including the beet salad which was very nice. I had the ribeye and my wife had the filet. We brought in a lovely bottle of wine that my wife gave me for my birthday, so even with the $25 corkage, we saved money. The wine service was well done, with he waiter concerned that he did not push or break the cork, since he had no idea how the wine was stored. Both steaks were ample (the dogs loved the left overs) and cooked to our liking. The sides were tasty and they had no issues subbing the veggies my wife wanted and serving her steak without the sauce. Overall, it was a nice, upscale/casual restaurant. I have a hard time classifying it. Other people call it like a Houstons, but I think it is nicer, but it is not a clubby as a Mortons, and it really isn't dressy, but what around here is dressy these days. I expect that when we are in the mood for a nice steak, this will be under serious consideration. The portions are good, the quality is there, the service is nice, and the price is reasonable, especially when compared to some other options. read more
