I've been to Lumpy's a handful of times now, and it's just fantastic. We've always gone on nights when there weren't many other people around (in the winter time). We've interacted primarily with Micah, who has been absolutely amazing. I am a question asker and a sample taker, and he's super knowledgeable and friendly and not put off at all by any of my questions. The flavors vary every visit so I'd urge you not to get your heart attached to any particular one, but keep an open heart for new flavors. The ice cream is rich and creamy and perfect for consumption. They also offer locally made products (honey and jerky) and the milk they use to create the ice cream, which is fantastic. I love ice cream. LOVE IT. And now that I am preggo, I love it even more :) Lumpy's is very old school in look and feel, but their flavors are very new school. First time I went I got maple walnut, and it was heaven on a cone. So rich and creamy. This is the real deal ice cream, so you don't need a heaping of it to be satisfied. A couple of days ago I was craving a milkshake, and I couldn't be more lucky to live within 1 minutes driving distance to Lumpy's. The shake was perfection. Thick and rich, but with the perfect amount of milk to not make it chocolate overload. It even came in a plastic cup that I can use again :) This is the place to go for amazing and local made ice cream. Also note, they started serving some hot food. read more

Stopped by first time. Cute local mom & pop place. Lots of character. Had loads of homemade ice cream with unique flavors & they make their own waffle cones!! I had the brown sugar vanilla ice cream & it was amazing! Definitely recommend. read more

Wondered what the fuss was all about, so my husband & I tried Lumpy's. Immediate impression walking up to the place was fairly good, with good signage, somewhat appealing. The shock walking in was another issue. They know nothing about how to keep customers & create an atmosphere. The decorations were very masculine, furniture was old, worn out & uncomfortable. Actually, I agree with another customer in another review, it was a dump. The 2-3 men behind the counter weren't very friendly, again like an earlier review. I wonder if the owners read any of these critiques & find them not useful? The Coconut ice cream was a generous amount in a waffle cone, but lacked coconut flavor. They missed the mark on this one. Doubt if we'll be back, dumpy place, no marketing skills, less than friendly employees, ice cream less than average in flavor, why bother, there are plenty of other ice cream stores around. read more

Wonderful ice cream! We are also greeted warmly every time we come in. The butter pecan ice cream is the best I've ever had. I love that they are always rotating through different flavors that have great names. The flavors are always made with real ingredients and the house-made waffle cones cannot be beat. read more

Very creative and innovative. This isn't your typical chocolate and vanilla ice cream parlor. They use all organic and local products, which makes this treat less of a guilt trip :) different and new flavors everyday you won't be bored by the selections. This is no ordinary ice cream parlor. This is frozen dairy heaven! My siblings and I went two nights in a row and the flavors rotate and change, making it perfect for repeat visits to see what unexpected delights await. My favorite flavor I had both times was GINGER, which was out of this world!! I also had the key lime pie and the Nicaraguan chocolate (which I liked the best of the two). The staff, all of whom are friendly, helpful, and very generous with their scooping, also very happily offer samplings of their flavors on-hand, a great bonus when some of the flavors sound so bizarre (raspberry habanero, for example) you'd like to try before getting a whole scoop. The homemade waffle cones are the preferred method of transport, and worth the extra $1. They also sell pints of their wide assortment of flavors to take home and share. I haven't been this enamored of an ice cream place in a long time! Now I just wish I lived closer so I could go all the time (though my gut is probably thankful for the distance). Good variety of subtle flavors tonight, though the last time we went there were a lot more dramatic and varied choices. The Whiskey Whisker Clover and Papaya were almost indistinguishable from a base vanilla. Others in our party enjoyed some strawberry, lingonberry, baklava, and chocolate. With a large party, the server seemed more interested in moving us through than talking things up or offering samples. Better service has been had on previous visits. Value pushes it to three stars tonight rather than a 4-5 before. In terms of options, certainty the potential to be the top choice in Wake Forest, but not a strong outing this evening. read more

This was one of the first places we visited before moving to Wake Forest. Buck talked with us for about 20 minutes and engaged our kids as well. I remember Lumpy's, when it was still being sold out of a cooler. The owner, Buck, is passionate about his ice cream and works very hard to promote it, as well as "churn" out a consistently good product. I'll never forget my first experience with the Scotch Vanilla, it was out of this world. If you're w/n a 30 minute drive, do yourself a favor and go try it out. Definitely worth it. read more

We were visiting friends in the area and decided to stop here after dinner. Really fun little spot, the have a lot of good flavors, and I love that they have their own original flavors as well. I wasn't impressed with the coffee ice cream or the mint, as the flavors weren't strong enough to really tell what they were, but we still had a good time, and would come back to try something else :) read more

I've been going to Lumpy's since it first opened a few years ago. The owner, Buck, is a Pixar-esque character who's really passionate about ice cream. He'll eagerly share a new flavor, ask you what you like, and make suggestions. He also does NOT like whining and will not hesitate to (politely) ask children to stop if they do. As far as the ice cream, most of the mainstay flavors are delicious! There seems to be a few new varieties every time I go, so you know it's fresh. Most of the seasonal flavors are ok (many are just fruits in a vanilla base), but there are some phenomenal specials like jalapeno cornbread you can't find anywhere else. They also sell pints, both to order and pre-filled. The place is nice enough for a short get-together, nothing too fancy. If you're lucky, Buck might play you a song on his ukulele! read more

Have been here several times with my wife and kids and a few times on my own. The ice cream is great don't get me wrong, but it seems if the kids are not around the owner doesn't give a crap. He is very sweet with my 8 and 6 year olds but the few times I or my wife have gone in he is an entirely different person. He is rude and dismissive. I love the product but won't put up with being treated like dog crap on someone's shoe. read more

I got the almond joy and sadly, it didn't taste like coconut at all. It didn't even taste like vanilla.Also, putting chocolate chips into ice cream is a terrible choice, since chocolate chips contain stabilizers that prevent them from melting - so when the temperature drops (aka when they're put into ice cream) they become brittle and chalky. Please, for the love of ice cream, do some research before you make your next batch of ice cream. read more

To the lady who started the crazy firestorm about not getting a free lump, we came because of you-so thank you! We got a bourbon carmel, chocolate chip,-peanut butter banana, and a chocolate. My husband raves about this place and we go often so he can try out a new flavor as it's always changing. The ice cream is all homemade with fresh ingredients and isn't overly sweet.
