Delicious Pupusas!!! My parents used to frequent this restaurant as they live in the area and kept raving about how great the pupusas were. We decided to check it out on a weekday afternoon as we are told it does get crowded on the weekends. There were some patrons but not too crowded around 1230pm lots of open tables. Owners son waited on us and was very efficient and personable, made us feel very welcomed. We had 4 orders of various pupusas a corn tamale with crème. These were by far some of the best pupusas I've had in decades. Even my generation X teenagers raved about how yummy they were compared to another local spot in south OC near our home. Was also pleasantly surprised to see that the pupusas here compared to other places are under $3 each, much lower than we are used to and these were amazingly good!!! The corn tamale was good as well but not exceptional. The pupusa plates also came with a small cup of refried beans that were dark and delicious, perfect for dipping the fried plantains. What surprised me the most was this place had the "Ensalada" drink which I remember having at a pupuseria up in Hollywood back in the late 70's! Its a sweet cold drink with diced peaches and apples. I didn't think anybody made those anymore. So good an authentic food. Will definitely be back for this rare treat next time we are visiting grandparents in the area. read more

Not only is it super affordable, but it's fresh and filling. The freshly made food comes with a slight wait, but it's truly worth it. Love their Popusas and plátanos Fritos. Had them for Mother's Day 2019. I had my dad pick up probably about 20 Papusa's and everything was just perfect! When you think of Southeast Los Angeles you do not think of good pupusas. In any case, they sell good pupusas revueltas here at Luna Maya. Luna Maya has got to be one of the most beautiful names for a restaurant out there! When I came in I was greeted by a very lovely and friendly server. I asked for four pupusas revueltas to go. They did not take that long either which is kind of surprising since good pupusas usually take forever. Sadly, they charge $1 if you use a card. That's pretty bad! Each pupusa revuelta is $2.25. They are pretty generous with the curtido on to go orders here which is a plus! The pupusas were pretty good but the curtido was bland and it was not condimented enough nor was it vinegary enough. Still it is not bad curtido - but it's flavor is just too subtle. The horchata, which is unlike Mexican horchata, was OK. The place was virtually empty when I walked in around noontime. Granted it was a weekday. The decor is very modest. They do try to make the restaurant look nice though. There are plenty of seats as it's a midsized restaurant and you can sit at a bar table too. It seemed most of the customers that were coming in were locals as they were all pretty much greeted by name which is very nice. However, on one of my visits I noticed that they have a sign in front that says they give Yelp discounts. Our server said that they "are not with Yelp" and that the previous owner had put that up....ooookkkkk.... There's a "people love us on Yelp" sticker still here! He then said that he would give us a discount anyway - which never happened. Currently, they have a 10 pupusas for $20 deal. Soo I came I saw and you know what I ain't going back. So I came here Friday afternoon to grab some food. the first thing I saw when I was going in was the B they gave this place from the food and health department. But hey it's ok right it happens. So I get the menu so that I can order some pupusas. I ordered 2 bean and cheese pupusas and a tamarind water. Wow!! yeah first off the tamarind water was really bad It tasted really funky. I am not sure if it was too concentrated or they used old tamarindos. But It did not taste good at all. And you know what it was soo bad that I might not drink tamarind water for a good while because I still remember that funky taste I got from it. When I got my pupusas they were really greasy I'm not sure I think it might have been from the cheese. There was really no beans in my pupusas so I was basically just eating a bean pupusa. The pupusa was under cooked I think it could have been left for a bit more on the grill so it could have cooked. Now on to the service there were not that many people in the place when I went in just two families and some men at the bar eating area. The waitress instead of checking the tables to see if they needed anything else she was more concentrated on talking to the men seating at the bar. I'm not sure if these people were family or hers or maybe just regulars but their conversation was not appropriate for the kids who were around. I mean come on keep the vulgarity down or to a minimum when you have customers. Checked this placed out for the first time with my family, whom had been multiple times. After living in Washington, DC for 8 years, with a large Salvadorean community, I have to say these were some of the best pupusas I've ever tasted. The revuelta (pupusa with cheese and pork) was truly exceptional: not too greasy, nice and cheesy and just the right size. The restaurant also gives you an abundance of curtido (chopped cabbage) and salsa to put on your pupusa. As many typical Latino restaurants, they also provide chips and salsa. One small caveat for those that aren't fans of spice: stay away from the salsa as it is quite spicy, even for this Mexican American. Ambiance is key for me, and I was looking for a true family restaurant. This place has a bar and plays semi loud Latin club hits, so if you're not into that, you may want to bring your headphones. The staff is very attentive. This is the kind of spot where the manager walks around and asks if you need anything else. That's always a plus for me! The Pupusas are pretty good. The service not so much. We were eating here about once a week for a while. The problem was that they always took kind of long to serve us. The last time I was there, I decided to stop giving them my service. I brought up to the waitress on one occasion that the Iced-T was bitter and she responded by telling me that it was fine, she said just add sweetner. She told me I needed to sweeten the Tea, because Iced-T was not good unsweetened. I asked her if I could exchange it for a soda and she didn't want to, she kept insisting on the tea. She comes out with a jar of powdered Lipton Iced-T and she said she new it was fine because she mixed it herself. I said ok, get me a coke please. She kept talking and explaining herself yo me after I had told her I didn't want it. The waitress, who had been the same waitress everytime I had been there, never provided good or average customer service. I was dragged back by my gf, a couple of weeks ago [Early Feb 09]. We have been here about 4 times eating the pup us as and they are excellent. We watch other people get their food and it looks great. Today I had their chicken soup and it was the best. Big piece of chicken with rice, side of salad then comes the bowl of soup with vegies. Totally awesome. Vegies are great and then toy add the chicken with rice and you are in heaven. Just want to tell everyone if you come here there is a wait for your food cause it's fresh and hot. So get a few beers or glass of wine sit back and enjoy. Everything is worth the wait. I would give this restaurant a 3.5 stars. We walked in and were not greeted or instructed to take a seat... A few moments of awkwardness and we sat ourselves at a table. A waitress came to drop off the menus and take our drink orders. She seemed friendly but a bit tired to be there. There were only a few men at the bar and one other family at a table. The restaurant is very spacious and the art on the wall was very nice and not your typical farmer carrying a bale of hay or sleeping under a tree by a river. I'm a fan of their menu cause they had a huge selection of authentic dishes. We ordered the Horchata and I was disappointed that they didn't come in a bigger glass. I've had a better Salvadorean Horchata but this one is still good. We ordered Pupusas revueltas, Plantains with beans, fresh tortillas, and the pasteles de carne. The pupusas where delicious with just the right amount of cheese and not too greasy. The curtido (pickled cabage) was not spicy enough. The salsa is also very bland and watered down tomato sauce. The pasteles came out piping hot but I could tell they were frozen because the filling was way too moist and scorching hot and the inside dough was mush. The pasteles themselves where a little too bland and needed more seasoning. Our server only stopped by our table to deliver food but never came by to ask how we were doing or if we needed refills. We had to flag her down to order another round of refills or for my wife to order more sour cream for her plantains. We also flagged her down to get our check. So I would come back for a quick pupusa fix but will probably keep looking for other Salvadorian restaurants in the area. read more
