My waiter seemed to be doing the best he could.... but I could not be more disappointed with the whole establishment. This used to be my favorite place, but I am very disappointed with how it has changed. We got there at 7:30 pm.. left at 10:30 pm. not because we were lingering, but because of the continuous false promises of the wait. I had a 3 year old that was very hungry (expected) that did not even get chips until 9 pm after I asked many waiters to help while the wait was so much longer than what was told.. no water for the kids except what I had in my bag after a long time of waiters refusing to help get us even started at our table. We have been to busy restaurants for 30 years and always give the benefit of the doubt they are trying their best... but this is just bad management. Plus, we always respect waiters no matter what.. and we were walked all over. Of course we gave a good tip, because it was not our waitor's fault.. but wow. I can't even list all of the ways we were disrespected and I had to be the teacher of the sandbox because no one was watching their kids throw sand in my Son's eyes and be mean to him.. our "new friends" would stop. as I asked them nicely but no parents cared to even watch while we were there. My office took me here for my birthday for lunch. We had 11 people and if you know this place you need to get here early as it fills up fast. At first it looked like we were gonna be eating somewhere else as the hostess claimed they could not seat us all together but the manger stepped in and made it happen.l It would have been a real lost for them to turn 11 hungry people away. The food is always good here and they are always busy around lunch so you have to be patient. They got all of our orders right and the waitress kept our glasses full and the chip and salsa coming. It is an awful table, right next the waitstaff stand and the walkway from the kitchen to the rest of the restaurant. I had a brand new waiter, that the rest of the staff refused to assist, and he made mistakes with my food and ticket. A bit of training, and assistance, please? for the new staff member not me. Requested The Original Chicken Lupe which is an over cooked, dried chicken breast topped with the salsa they serve, and some cheese. Do not believe the menu description. I ordered corn tortillas and received flour, and the waiter was confused about what to do when I requested what I ordered. The rice and beans were as expected, the meal overall was boring. The menu at this location is truncated from the other locations, and is also boring. Mostly tacos, burritos, and fajitas. I eat here once every five to ten years, and every time I'm reminded what I love about Tex-Mex cooking and have enjoyed seeing this place grow from a much smaller place back in the 80s into a huge, sprawling bunch of rooms that have been added on and on and on. I had the "Cheekin" 1/2 order of fajitas--a tad more expensive than what I'm used to at Pappasito's Cantina, but Lupe Tortilla's quality is better than anywhere else. Tip: Ask your server if the kitchen can go light on the salt and seasoning on the chicken. Thank you, fellow Yelpers--seasoning is one thing they tend to overdo, and asking for lighter salt made a noticeable difference. The only thing missing was sour cream, but with everything else that came with the fajitas, I didn't mind. The ambience is incredible at night. It's like eating in a big glowing home, complete with multiple dining rooms, outdoor spaces and a fast, noisy, busy pace that can make this a casual or dressy place. We decided to try this place and it was surprisingly a wonderful experience. The restaurant is filled with Mexican culture references which makes it unique and when you walk around there are many different tables to choose from which makes it hard to pick one. We had strawberry frozen margaritas and a piña colada which were awesome. Our server, Adi was just perfect, her service was outstanding, make sure you request her when you visit. Even from walking in the restaurant we asked a waiter in the hallway where we should go to ask for a table (the place was busy with no clear signage). She literally just pointed her arm to the left without looking in our direction or offering any greeting. Rude as hell. Then we get to the table. We sat outside. We had a party of 3 but the tables were so tiny that our food and drinks could not fit. We each ordered fajitas and margaritas. We asked for an additional table to make things manageable or at least to clear our table and received ZERO help. Even after asking the waitress sent several different people to check on us. It's clear she didn't know what she was doing. We had plates and bowls sitting in CHAIRS beside us. Was excited when I was walking into "the original" Lupe Tortilla. I have only been to one other location in San Antonio and that was years ago. Walked into what seemed more like a house and I was digging the cozy atmosphere. The waiter on the other hand, not so welcoming. I hate that! Lupe is one of the first place I ate at when I visited TX so many years ago. And oddly enough one of the reasons why I picked up and moved cross country to Tx. So needless to say I'm a little biased. Realistically this is one of the best Tex-Mex places around and that says a lot being it's Texas. Normally when I go out to eat I like to order different options and try the menu. Not here. I only get one thing from Lupe and it's the Beef Fajitas. Lime Marinated Flank Steak grilled on a cast iron pan is just fantastic. The chips are great. Thin Cantina style chips with great Frijoles. I can say much else for the other menu option. The service has always been great and I have never had an issue. The only problem I have is not all the locations are the same. I found hair in my beans, but I will still give it 4 stars. It was a nice Wednesday afternoon. The weather was perfect. I decided to eat at Lupe Tortilla. First of all, the location is awesome. What I mean by location is not where it is located in the city, but what other businesses or what surrounds it. This Lupe Tortilla has restaurants and bars surrounding it. All of them seem like old houses converted into restaurants or bars. There are huge live oak trees in the area. The scenery looks great. It would be great if this area grew to more bars and restaurants, and see how it would be during the night. The area made me feel like walking from place to place. Anyway, going back to Lupe. I see there is a playground suitable for little kids, not adults. There goes me playing around. The decor of the inside isn't serious but fun and casual. The lights have a sombrero being used as the shade. The music that was being played was in Spanish. It sounded like Spanish. It didn't sound Chinese or French. I don't want to offend anyone by saying the hostess and server seemed Mexican, so I won't assume they were. I will just say they seemed like a Spanish speaking person (from their accent). Chips were served with salsa. I liked how he didn't give me too many chips. I know I wouldn't be able to finish a lot, and I hate wasting food by not eating all of it. I ordered the Stuffed Poblano Pepper. It was ready in what seemes like 3 minutes. Don't know the exact time, but it was quick. It tasted pretty good. About halfway through eating my food, I noticed there was a hair about an inch long in my beans. I am bald, so I really don't think it came from me. Plus, part of it was covered in beans. The weird thing is (maybe from the awesome weather), I pushed it to the side and kept on eating my pepper. The server came back. I was about to tell him, but I didn't want the other people eating to get the wrong impression. Everything was good except this tiny little hair. I waited for the people next to me to leave. I tell the server about the hair and he goes and gets a manager. In all honesty, I am a bit glad to see the hair, just to see how they would handle this situation. The manager comes over and asks me about the hair. I pointed to the beans with my fork. He takes the plate to the back and probably shows it to the cook. The manager didn't really say much. My server comes back and is apologetic about what had happened. Mistakes do happen. I make no big deal of it. He shows me that they take 50% off the price. It wasn't his fault. I guess it's fair. I didn't eat the beans, which is 1/3 of my plate. I do eat the rice and the stuffed pepper. So half off was reasonable. I think I would have given it 5 stars if he would have offered free dessert also. Or if there was no hair in my beans. I think the server did a great job during my visit. The food was good. Trust me, I have eaten a lot of fajitas in my lifetime. Hands down, they were absolutely delicious. I found this place on Yelp while in Houston for a work trip. As I mentioned, the building looks like a house. Each of the rooms is packed with tables made to accommodate as many diners as possible and believe me, even on a weeknight there were people waiting to be seated. The food: - Chips: the meal started with a crispy serving of chips accompanied by a very flavorful bowl of charro beans and pico de gallo. - Beef Fajitas: I added the bacon-wrapped shrimp to my order because I really wanted to try them too (great idea!). SO MUCH FOOD. The fajitas came out topped with the tower of shrimp. On the side, a huge plate of cheese, guacamole and pico to top my fajitas. Also, because what I needed was more food, a side of beans and rice. Finally, the tortillas were giant discs of "flour-y" goodness. They were so large, I could have used one as a blanket. The fajitas must have been marinated for a LONG time. They were so flavorful and tender. Overall, a great meal and now a new stop on my future trips to Houston. Known for quality food cooked when you order (it's not frozen microwave stuff), a long wait for dinner (especially on weekends) and slow service - you come for the food. And the food is superb. On weekends you might wait 45 - 60 minutes, but there is a huge sandbox for the kids and a cash margarita bar - sure makes the wait more tolerable! As for the food...start with the chili con queso to go with the homemade salsa and bean dops. For your entree, try the Chicken Lupe or the Three Pepper Cheese Steak. And have another margarita. I went here last night and I think my friends had a great time, but it was really hit and miss with service. The waiter made sure to make the birthday girl and her husband feel appreciated. They focused a lot on them, which I can appreciate for my friend, but then they kept doing whatever they wanted with the rest of the people at the table. For instance, the food took long, granted we were a large party, but we all ordered fairly basic items. Nothing special ordered or any special requests. One of my BF's friends told the waiter to put the margarita on his tab, but they still charged us instead after closing out our friends tab. I also asked for corn instead of flour tortillas. They didn't come out with the tortillas and when they did it was the wrong one. I was so hungry at that point, I just ate them anyways. I didn't want to wait an additional 15 minutes for corn tortillas. When a new friend joined he was able to get his food in less than 10 minutes. Our food took about 40 minutes, if not more. The parking situation there is awful. If you even park at the other restaurants, you will get towed. Lupe Tortilla does the same to their customers.
