Absolutely Delicious! Amazing authentic Southwestern Mexican food! It was my first time here and I was blown away. I'm from SoCal and this is the most authentic Southwest Mexican food I've had. I've been to Tucson many times and it's my new favorite. The Machaca enchilada was incredibly savory and the portion sizes are great. Stopped in for the first time. We lived here in the 1980s and never came in. Man did we miss out. Everything was fantastic! We had the homemade chorizo plate with rice and beans, it was perfect and we highly recommend getting it. The red chili burrito, enchilada style was another amazing dish. Even the taco, rice, and beans from the kids menu was so flavorful. They have something for everyone. Make sure to stop, Shelley was so welcoming and friendly. The food and service was good. The restaurant is a typical Mexican restaurant that is around nowadays. The styling isn't great but works for what you need to have a nice meal. The food is nice size portions but is a bit overpriced feeling. It is the only place to eat within several miles so you need to take that into mind. The one thing I didn't like was that is was in the mid 80s and sunny outside and the AC was not on inside. So it was a bit warm and stuffy but if you sat still it wasn't too too bad. read more

While in the Oracle area the Mexican restaurant we typically visit was closed so we stopped at Lupe's. This was my first time. There was only one waitress handling both the orders and the cash register so service was somewhat stressed. Three of us ordered the machaca taco plate while the fourth, who is new to Mexican food, tried a burro for the first time. The small basket of chips and salsa was quickly devoured and we waited a long time for a refill. In particular, I felt the regular salsa was weak and, as the picture shows, the squeeze bottle was half used before we got the hot salsa as seen in the black bowl. While acceptable, it was not hot in my rating system. Overall I would rate the entrees as typical for the Tucson area. The chips were a bit below average. The ambiance was average. Service was acceptable given the circumstances. All in all, there was nothing to make Lupe's stand out. I doubt if I would came back, although two of the people in our party live in the area and will return. read more

Has gone down hill, (over last 6-7 years) and now, we will not ever return for many reasons. Greasy food, cheap tasting chips from a bag, (not homemade anymore) salsa taste like tomato juice with little seasonings, no call backs from waitress, staff laying in booths on their cell phones. The place is dirty looking, inside and out. Sad to see this place not remain authentic Mexican food and service anymore. read more

We have eaten at Lupes for years. The restaurant is ready for an update, but we like their food. We love their green mixed burros but since they were out of chile verde when we were there recently, we ordered tacos. The taco "meat" was the weirdest, mystery, mushy stuff. Lupe's has a faithful crowd based on the vehicles and some of the conversations we heard while in the restaurant, but frankly we didn't get it. The building itself is an old abode structure which has its charm, but the food was rather lackluster. The salsa reminded me of marinara sauce and didn't have that zing I expect from Mexican food. Overall our meal was rather bland. For mid-western transplants who have never experienced good Mexican food, this may be your place, but in a town like Tucson, there are much better opportunities out there. read more

A must when you are passing through Catalina. The food was delicious, the service exceptional. Shoutout to Shelly who was more than hospitable, she truly made us feel like family during our visit. A few things to order: the spicy salsa (so tasty), the menudo (great flavor and extra hominy is a must), enchilada and tamale plate. Food and service are fair. We live within 3 miles and we're hoping for a great Mexican restaurant. It isn't. Carlottis is way better.

We went in, and the foyer had a sign saying, "Please wait to be seated" we waited.... and waited... Eventually, I said in a loud voice "is there anyone here?" There was no answer. After waiting a little bit more, I remarked to my family almost as loudly, "I guess we will have to go eat somewhere else" and we did just that. Ok, first off let me dispel the misinformation by people with no background in geography. This restaurant is NOT in Tucson it is between Catalina and Oracle right at the 77 junction. Sorry for those folks driving around Tucson looking for it. Now let's get down to business... Establishment is cafe style with booths and tables, nice decorations. It can be a little loud as it is an open floor seating. The staff seemed to be a little short handed and were moving around just as fast as they could. I would not call this poor, just understaffed. It was a Sunday however. I was served FRESH tortilla chips and salsa when I sat down. The salsa appeard to be just standard red tomato sauce, however it was more than that. A delicious blend of fresh tomatoes and spices. It was better than most I have had. I ordered the machaca chimi and an ala carte chili relleno. Both dishes came out after about 15 minutes and were very very hot. So hot the served them double plated. I will admit that I usually take one bite of the rice and beans and never touch them again as usually they are just blahs, however I ate ALL of the rice and beans on this plate as they were both delightfully flavorful. The chimichanga was about half the size of most places however the machaca was moist and flavorful and the chimi was fried perfectly. The chili relleno should be ordered with no sauce. I had to scrape off the sauce as it was to overpowering for the dish. After I scraped of most of the sauce the relleno was moist with a combination of white and yellow cheese, lightly fried in delicious batter. Overall a I am glad I did not pass this little gem for the millionth time. While I will not call it the best in "Tucson" I will call it the best in the Oracle, Catalina, Saddlebrook area. If you want to drive from Tucson 20+ miles then definitely stop in. Overall grade A read more

Thank you to ALL of the Yelpers that gave this place amazing reviews... After traveling on the road for about (2) hours to get to Biosphere 2. I forgot to pack some snacks and I was really hungry. After staying at the Biosphere 2 for about an hour and half, I was beyond hungry. Thank you to yelp - looked at the reviews and it was the closest restaurant near us and that was it. We are heading to Lupe's. I had no idea if it was only take-out or we could dine in, these days you never know and happy it was a place where we could dine in. However, there are outside tables if people who do not want to dine in the restaurant and rather be outside. Our host, she was very graceful with us. They are limiting their crowds and doing the social distance of every other table or booth. Fortunately, we had a nice booth and felt safe. There food is delicious. I had their Sweet pork Chimichanga with refried beans and Mexican rice and it was so amazingly delicious. My husband was surprised that I ate everything on my plate...hahaha! He made a comment and said "Hmm, I have to starve you all day so you eat all of your food!" lol, what a jokester.... Between the host, who eventually became our waiter and the waiter himself work together simultaneously in helping all of the customers including us. It was really nice to see. I love their chip and their salsa...I could of just ate that and I would of been fine too.... Its location feels like it is in the middle of nowhere. We have been relatively long term loyal patrons of Lupes (7+ years) and previously shared well deserved 4 and 5 star accolades. Our sentiments regarding the present quality of food unfortunately have dramatically changed for the worse. The basis of the above comment relates to having been served the likes of stale, broken bits of chips with a "salsa" that tasted strongly like canned tomato sauce with little to no flavor as well as a runny, watered down Chile Verde sauce over tasteless, soggy and stringy meat. There is no mean spirited intention to willfully bash Lupes here, however, it is the truth the meal served up on our recent visit was among the worst Mexican food we've ever had in a restaurant located within the Southwest United States. Sad to say what used to be a reasonably priced, convenient "go to" place to get pretty good Mexican food, is no longer at this time. Do wish this was a one time anomaly, but the overall decline in our opinion has been in place for some time now. read more
