The caramel apple mini pies here are heavenly. I think it's probably the best pie I've eaten in many years! (I've done a lot of baking so should know what a great crust tastes like). Dutch person reporting here. The name "Dutch Bakery" is about as relevant to these products as the name Dick's is to what they sell in there. (So expect disappointment) 95% of what this place sells is in no way, shape or form Dutch. Not similar to anything I've ever seen in The Netherlands, and it doesn't even pretend to be. And then they have about 5 or so 'Dutch' products: Almond boterkoek - No. No. NO. Doesn't even vaguely resemble boterkoek. Just a big, soft, light American style cookie with way too much fake almond essence. Okay if you like big sugar cookies. Sucks if you were expecting boterkoek. Ditch the fake almond and baking powder, double the butter, maybe THEN we'll talk. Gevulde speculaas - The only item that is somewhat Dutch. Too hard, and too much sugar in the speculaas though, should have a lower sugar, higher butter/egg ratio to maintain the right texture and freshness. Amandelstaaf - Didn't need to try it to see it doesn't look anything like Dutch amandelstaaf. Pea soup - okay, sort of Dutch, but is theirs Dutch too? Couldn't try it as they were about to close. Sausage Rolls - Since even the outstanding Dutch American Market in Beaverton doesn't make true saucijzenbroodjes, I didn't dare try these. PS: trade secret straight from a Dutch baker: the secret recipe ingredient is pâte à choux dough in the veal. Sandwiches - Look at the pictures here on Yelp of their interpretation of 'French bread', which is apparently just American hoagie rolls. Over a Dutchman's dead body would that ever get served in Holland. Conclusion: Come on, is it really that hard to dig up a few Dutch recipes online, maybe make a Dutch style loaf of bread, like a nice tijgerbrood? They sell good tijgerbrood in ordinary GROCERY STORES in much of the West Coast, especially San Francisco! How about some Tompoezen? Mokkagebakje? Kaasbroodje? Kaas-uienbrood? All easily made with what most bakers have readily available in their kitchen, even in America. Seems like plain laziness to me. read more

If you're unfamiliar with Lynden, it's a quaint Dutch-style town outside of Bellingham with a slightly touristy main drag through town. The bakery is an off-shoot of the Dutch Mother's restaurant, and down the street a little ways. You can get a lighter lunch here, but we usually have lunch at the restaurant and then drop by to pick up a pie (or two!) I've never had a bad pastry here and there have been long and loud family arguments over whether to get the caramel apple pie or the caramel chocolate pie. It's a little sparse inside, but one doesn't come here for the ambiance, Dutch-dressed waitresses aside. read more

Wow, this place is a cornucopia of good-looking baked goods! They had samples available, and I tried the lemon shortbread cookie, which was seriously decadent...had to grab one of those. And I also got a gooey PB&J bar...not sure what the crust was on it but the filling was really rich and combined with fresh blackberries. A quick stop on the way to the Coupeville ferry to Port Townsend. The bakery is as charming as the downtown. Nostalgic. They had a few different gluten free options too, which for us is mandatory for bakery enjoyment. The desserts are dense and delicious, and shareable sizes- seriously, none of us could finish one on our own so we shared bites and pieces of all the delectable treats we bought. Oh sweet sweet indulgence!! Do not go here if you are counting calories! I am from Dutch-Indonsian decent, and around every holiday season my grandma would spoil us with delicious Dutch delicacies. After attempting to make my own (and butchering them) I was pleased to find a few of my favorite here... only 3 hours away from home. Go for the almond roll! Or if they have it at the time, try the Ollie Bollen! The white chocolate raspberry scones are delicious as well. The girls were so polite, the cafe is super clean and adorable and the food is incredible. DH and I stopped in for lunch and had subs which were piled high with meat cheese and fresh veggies. Not only was our first visit awesome, but we also decided to stop in later that night after a really sucky day we wanted a treat to make us feel better. The turkey sub and chili were good and the pie was excellent. We also had ice tea and the tea was very strong and bitter. The service was friendly. I ate lunch here today. I ordered a bowl of the white chicken chilli with a small dinner roll and iced tea. The toppings offered were shredded cheddar cheese and red onions, I graciously accepted. The chicken chilli was very scrumptious and hearty, perfect for a rainy day lunch. The toppings were plentiful and added a good bite. The small dinner roll wasn't small, it was quite large and very light and fluffy. The iced tea was just as good. They also had split pea and ham, loaded potato, and broccoli cheddar soups as well. Every baked thing in this iconic Lynden landmark is delicious!!! Even their pie crust is excellent! However, I would prefer that their coffee be stronger than it is, and let people who like their coffee less strong add hot water to theirs. If there is something you particularly like, and want to be sure they have it when you get there, it's not a bad idea to call ahead and have them set it aside for you. The gals who work here are always very nice and helpful. read more

Day trip up north landed us in Lynden, and right before heading home, we spotted this bakery. Fantastic! We ended up, after much indecision, with the white chocolate raspberry scones, M&M cookies, giant cinnamon roll, lemon cherry bar, and probably more. Oh, my, forget the diet when you cross this threshold. The breads, the pastries, the cookies! All are delicious. We had a raspberry scone, Dutch muffin (profiteroles) and gigantic cinnamon roll today. All were great, but the Dutch muffin was to die for. Slight cinnamon flavor throughout a finely textured base, with cream cheese topping, it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Usually we also purchase a loaf of rye bread to take home, but they were sold out. So, a loaf of blackberry lemon sweet bread followed us home. It promises to be a great morning treat. They also have soup and sandwiches, and in the past we have enjoyed lunch here. It lives up to a high rating as well. This bakery does not disappoint! And, the staff is amazing. We have found only friendly, courteous staff each time we've visited (4 so far). We drive an hour to come here-- whenever we want truly good, like-Mom-used-to-make, delicious bakery goods. read more

The cinnamon roll was good for sharing and was well priced at USD 2.99 They have a wide assortment of bread, pastries, and pie-- so they have something for everyone. YIKES!!! Was craving a couple of donuts so went here after 5p and when I got to the counter first thing I noticed were the bugs dive bombing the pastries on the top shelf of counter. No covers on the pastries. Then I spotted a GIANT FLY buzzing around INSIDE the display case also dive bombing the refrigerated pastries. GROSS! Not what you want to see on your FIRST (and now LAST) visit! I immediately made a U-turn and walked out as quickly as possible. Got back in my car and was heading home to Birch Bay when I realized I would be driving past the second Lynden Dutch Bakery site - Just Desserts - in the Fairway center. Figured lets try this location since it couldn't be as bad as the main store. Walked in, checked out the pastries on the top shelf and guess what.........BUGS dive bombing the pastries again! Do you spot a pattern here?....... Both locations need to COVER whatever pastries they keep on the top shelf of display cases. Its not rocket science, most donut shops and bakeries do this routinely. If I recall correctly this situation would be considered a health code violation in other locations..... Whatever, I'll have to look elsewhere for a donut fix (not a fan of the supermarket donuts) in a store the actually COVERS ALL of their pastries........ read more

This is normally where I'd post a long-winded review, but... Well. It's Lynden Dutch Bakery. Lynden is a haven for good food, but Lynden Dutch Bakery takes the cake. (Sorry.) I usually go to Just Desserts, but both storefronts are staffed by the friendliest folk, so you can pick whichever is closest to you/you prefer. Absolutely everything they make is incredible. You want a gigantic maple bar? They can do that. Festive holiday stuff? Yep, that too. Something unexpected and seasonal? Just plain unexpected? Traditional Dutch classics? Non-traditional sweet innovations? Sachertorte?! And I hear tell the savory offerings are pretty great too, but the I'm committed to living the life of a sucrostarian. (My personal faves are their marshmallow-cream maple-chocolate donut bars and the Olie-Bollen, deepfried donut holes!) read more

Giving them 3 stars although their pies deserve at least a 4; we didn't buy one because we don't want to get "fatter" and mine are better. Chocolate cream cheese muffin was too dry and not enough cream cheese. It was tasty with the required cup of milk. Scones are ordinary. Mine from the Fishers box are also better. Macaroons are good. The Dutch bakery has lowered the price of their donuts and also the quality. Months ago I bought the most delicious Bismark donut. It was a very big and heavy full of creamy custard donut. I was a bit shocked at the price but knowing what I know now I wouldn't complain! Went there today and got my husband and his coworker donuts. When he saw them he couldn't believe how small they were. He took a bite into it and there was only a tiny small amount of custard. May as well go to safeway for donuts. Super disappointing about the change in donuts. I'd rather pay more $ for a donut that stands out from other "bakeries". Positive note: They do make a rather delicious rice krispie treat. The staff is always so friendly and kind. The have a large assortment of great foods and drinks. We have had many of the sweet treats, but my favorite is their maple bar! This is a place that our family enjoys going for breakfast, because not only can you get a donut, but you can order a breakfast sandwich, quiche or biscuits and gravy! Then on your way out grab a loaf of their bread or a coffee cake to take home with you. The prices are reasonable and the quality of the staff and food is wonderful! read more
