I've been to Lynfred a few times, and I've always had a fantastic time when I've come here. I've come for tastings, tours, and their annual Octoberfest celebration. The wine tastings serve as a great way to get acquainted with their large collection of quality wines. The staff that run the wine tastings are friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. The prices of the bottles are in line with most wineries I've been to in the state, and I truly believe that each wine here is worth the price attached to it. If you have some extra time, I also suggest doing a tour here. Learning about the history of Lynfred and the wine making process is very interesting. The interior and exterior of this building is beautiful, and could also serve as an ideal location for a small event. I went here with a group of friends recently as one of these friends works here and was able to get us a winery tour. It was fascinating to hear about the history of this business and how it sprung up as a family business. Also noted was the fact this is the oldest winery in the state of Illinois. The winery itself with the Bed and Breakfast is beautifully maintained and the wine itself is very tasty (not to mention the wide variety of wines (over 100 available for purchase)). They import their grapes from different areas of the US (including Southern IL, Michigan, and Wisconsin). All in all a neat place to check out if you are into wines and quite the nice facility to spend a weekend afternoon. read more

This place is super cute. I like that you can get a glass of wine, walk out on the porch and sit and sip. Service was friendly, the tasting bar was roomy. For $11, you'll get a huge goblet of wine. I don't love any of the wines I tried, and I found them to be a bit pricier than other places (Coopers Hawk) to purchase a bottle. Parking sucks. If I lived closer, I know I would go here a lot more and probably be a wine club member, because I think it is a fun thing to do. read more

One of our top 3 wine tastings, ever. Lynfred is just gorgeous - both the exterior brick walkway with climbing ivy and the interior tasting bar with in-laid wood carvings make it hard to believe you're in an "urban winery". The wines were delicious and varied - two pages of varietals, although only certain ones are available for tasting each month. Our wine hostess was personable and knowledgeable with fun tidbits that we've enjoyed along to our friends. What impressed me so much was the warm nature of the winery. Every person who walked in was treated with a warm hello and a genuine smile - a winery version of the Cheers bar. We had intended on a quick trip - and 2 hours later were wine club members! Everything was so enjoyable, we're planning a return trip to take advantage of some of their more private tasting options for a fun family afternoon. HIGHLY recommended! read more

I visited Lynfred Winery in June 2014. I enjoyed it. Went on a tour of the winery. It was quite informative. I didn't buy any wine, but I did buy a wine glass. (I love collecting wine glasses). While wine tasting, you are given a sheet with a list of wines (a wine tasting menu)...and they are checked off each time you go up for a sample of wine. The Strawberry Pecan bread was delish! You must try it. They offer ample samples of different breads while wine tasting. The Strawberry Pecan bread was the best tasting in my opinion. Also, you can purchase cheese and fruit while wine tasting. I think it was $5. The store is kinda small but they have an array of things to purchase for us wine lovers :) I really enjoyed it and would love to go back and purchase some of the wines that I enjoyed. I wouldn't go on the tour again since I've already went on it, only because it was quite long and you're standing for a long time. But I still enjoyed it. read more

I came here with my girlfriend who lives overseas, hoping to show her a taste of what a decent winery is like in the USA. We came on a weekday relatively early and were totally alone in the room we chose to sip our wine in. It was pleasantly private and cozy. Things started off pleasant enough. As we got a bit tipsy, we began to kiss. There was nothing overtly sexual about it and no indecent groping or fondling was happening. Just lots of kissing. We were enjoying ourselves and our wine. That is until a woman who worked there came in and rather rudely interrupted us. We took it in stride and continued our afternoon. About 10 minutes later a manager approached us and told us that there was a complaint from a customer about our show of affection. I paused and looked around the empty room, wondering where this elusive customer might have been hiding before returning my gaze to the manager and assuring her there would be nothing more to worry about. We then promptly left without finishing our wine tasting that we had paid for. We live in a world where showing love and affection is frowned upon as taboo, and where tyranny and greed are glorified. I love Lynfred and have been a member at Naperville and Roselle for awhile. I usually don't get to take advantage of the wine tastings due to work schedules and my children's schedules but I was able to take advantage of one last night with a friend from work. The woman who greeted us and started our wine tasting was nice and attentive. However, as the tasting proceeded, it got busier in the winery. We were constantly being asked to move down and wound up at the end of the bar, where I feel we were given less attention. Sometimes we would have to wait several minutes to move onto our next pour. I was also surprised that we didn't get bread to munch on during the tasting. When of was a member in Naperville (before having children and a busy work schedule), I would go to tastings every month at their location. Upon arrival, you were given a small plate of bread to help cleanse your palate between wines. Seems like a no brainer! I was surprised that the actual winery didn't do this. Overall, our experience was alright but I was hoping it would be similar to the experience I had in Naperville. read more

I have been to Lynfred Winery many times. My first visit was with a group for a wine tasting and tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and had us sample 3 red and 3 white wines. I felt I finally understood some of the 'basics' of wine after that tour, so it was a great introduction to wine. I discovered I love really dry wine - the exact opposite of what I thought i liked! It's a bit hard to find parking if you haven't visited before. The Winery itself is an add-on to a house. If you drive up Roselle Road, there will be a driveway you turn into. It leads to a parking lot behind. The entryway is halfway between the front and back on the side. The Winery has a tasting room where you can come sample up to two wines. Then walk to downtown Roselle and have some dinner. You can also purchase full bottles of wine. There is also a gift shop. The fruit wines make great presents for friends and family, but they are sweet/desert wines. I especially like the Strawberry Wine for something sweet. read more

How can you go wrong at a wine tasting....... Take 7 different wines from your winery but then have them all taste pretty much the same....way too sugary. Set up the wine station in a corner with only one pourer. I like to take my time and enjoy the wine but trying to get a sample took longer then it should've. Try to push store products that are way over priced when you can get the same things at Wolrd Market for a lot less. Have the staff ignore you when you ask question or need help. How you can go right at a wine tasting.... Seven dollars for seven tasting not bad at all. Not everybody on the staff was rude, some were really nice. The pourer gave a little more then they should... sweet! (except the wine wasn't that great) Location is beautiful, I only wish I could have seen the top floor. It has a glass floor overlooking the distillers. I can't say that I enjoyed the wine that much. People's taste buds are all different but you cannot deny that these wines are way too sweet (whites and reds). Somebody also wrote that if you're a wine snob then this is not the place for you and that you're too snooty to enjoy tastings by IL wineries. I think that is extremely arrogant to say, there are some great wineries in IL and just because you don't like one (for obvious reasons) that doesn't make you snooty. I'm not much of a wine snob and I (GASP) drink Illinois wine! I think this place has a lot of charm and when you're inside the garden sipping wine or chatting with friends you actually feel quite far away from the hustle and bustle of the city and suburbs. The greenery growing up the buildings, the stone driveway and serene atmosphere might trick you into believing that you're a stones throw away from that well known wine capital. Located fairly closely to the Roselle metra stop so no need to drive if you plan to partake in some wine tasting. For $9 we got to taste 7 wines but I must be honest when I say that $9 isn't expensive but compared to other Illinois wineries it is. The staff upon entering isn't as friendly as you would think they might be considering the fact that this whole visit should be an experience but the actual ladies in charge of the tasting were very nice and engaging. the actual wines I tasted were pretty good (nothing blew me away) and a few not so good ones. They also have a B&B attached which could be cozy for out of town guests. I would go back! read more

I really like Lynfred winery. It is a nice place to do a tasting, enjoy a snack, and soak your troubles away. The property is an old large home from some period that I cannot identify...but it is beautiful. There is a nice porch that you can sit on when the weather is warm. This is the main location so you can do and see a lot more at this location. There is a VIP room where you can order something small to taste with a flight of wine. You can do a tour and see the private cellars, the wine tanks, and hear about the Lynfred backstory. It is a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Don't forget to check out their Oktoberfest. It took a while to pay for the tasting and then there was only one girl pouring the tastes. You had to go through a doorway to get each taste which was difficult since it was crowded. This little winery, bed & breakfast, and gift shop off the beaten path in a nondescript suburban locale is somewhat of a celebrity chef secret. You'll find a large and surprisingly deep selection of both traditional and unusual wine choices (the sparkling mango was a surprise favorite of my wine snob friends). The regular wine tasting which lets you choose 7 of 8 choices for $9 is a steal, and Lynfred Winery is generous in their pours (I'm not the biggest fan of fruit wines, but Lynfred converted me on their aforementioned sparkling mango and also the rhubarb, both of which were very refreshing). I came here recently with a group of girls for a tour of the grounds and a wine/cheese tasting. Though it's always an enjoyable time catching up with friends and drinking wine, there were some improvements I would have made to the overall tour and facilities. First of all, thee tour was just over an hour, an HOUR! Now this place wasn't exactly huge or anything, so I think the tour could surely have been condensed to keep our interest a bit better. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable on the wines and business itself, however he really dragged everything out adding to our anticipation of the WINE! Next, the wine. Now I personally am a dry red kinda girl, however, most girls I was with enjoyed sweet whites. We got 2 taste 7 total out of 10 options: 3 whites, 3 reds, 2 fruit options(so, so, sweet!!), and 2 reserves. I personally only enjoyed 1 of the whites and 1 red, but I understand that changes from person to person. Overall I'd say it was a good selection for the masses. The cheese on the other hand, was surely disappointing. It was just sliced up deli cheese!! The fruit definitely helped fluff the presentation, but c'mon, deli slices?! Lastly the decor overall needed some updating. I understand it's a historic place and all, but the low ceilings and thick wood accents made it seem a little drab. read more

It was a little crowded (you kind of stand around on a balcony overlooking the vats) and there aren't too many places to sit, but we were there at prime time on a Saturday evening. When I was a kid, I lived in a neighboring town, and my mom would always tell me about the "wild party" she attended as a teen in the 1970s at the Lynfred Winery house, before it was a winery. Recently I wondered how the heck I'd never been here, being so close to my hometown, and hearing that story at least a thousand times. For my birthday, the fabulous Sarah S. gifted me a bottle of their Black Raspberry wine. What an angel she is, how did she know that out of all their fruit wines, THIS is the one I'd have chosen? I don't drink much red wine, but this is a fruit wine, so don't ignore these treasures if you're not a red wine person - they are NOT the same thing! Needless to say, that bottle didn't last long, and I went to Lynfred myself to pick up another. Don't forget - check in on Yelp! You'll receive a free loaf of French baguette. I was surprised that it was a full-size baguette. I expected a mini, appetizer size baguette. I didn't have time to do a tasting, but I browsed the gift shop and other wines available. Prices are moderate, many wines for only $10 and going up to $22. Lynfred Winery is also a bed & breakfast, gift shop, winery, and they do tours. The staff isn't overbearing at all, which was nice, but nobody said anything when I walked in either. I was surprised I wasn't persuaded to do any tasting or sampling, but I'll admit it was also nice to be able to get in and get out. There's a full parking lot in back, and the cobblestone walkways and building itself are gorgeous. I tried to envision my mother climbing those steps in her bellbottoms and platform heels - back when Shirl's was around the corner instead of Starbucks. Go for the wine. Go to reminisce. Lynfred is a local treasure in the Western burbs. Since 1979, the Kohler family has been producing wines that have won a variety of medals and awards. More importantly, Fred and Lynn Kohler were visionaries that believed fine wines could be produced in Illinois. When they founded their little venture, there were maybe a couple of dozen wineries in the whole state. Now that list approaches 100. I can't help but think that their success helped other Illinois wineries to "dip their toes" in the wine vat. Lynfred today has expanded beyond the production of fine wines and offers gourmet dining experiences, wine & cheese pairings and magnificent bed and breakfast suites. We visited on a recent Sunday afternoon and the main tasting area was bustling with tasters. The whole Lynfred crew were friendly and cheerful. Our hostess was Christina who gave us an informal tour. I highly recommend taking a tour of the winery! All I can say is "WOW!". The production facility is very impressive. It is absolutely spotless and I was amazed at the number of barrels that were aging various wines. It is a far cry from the small cellar we once saw in the 1980's. We had a sneak peak at three of the bed and breakfast suites. The accommodations are first-class and legitimately worthy of 5-stars! If you are looking for that special, pampered experience, I can't think of a classier setting. These luxury suites are really something to see. The tastings include a mix of red, white and a couple of dessert wines and the offerings change every month. The common theme in the wines we tasted were light, refreshing wines that could be quaffed on a hot summer day. I'm a big fan of their reds. I don't get into the sweeter wines all that much but I still ended up picking up a bottle of Apricot wine along with 5 other treasures. The topper was the incredible Cherrivino, a port-style fortified wine made with Montmorency cherries. I'm looking forward to enjoying it on a cold, blustery winter's eve. We're glad that we rediscovered Lynfred and look forward to returning. read more

I used to live in Roselle after graduating from college ( a long time ago) and I remember driving past this quaint, older looking home that was Lynfred Winery. I always wanted to stop by but didn't. Now it's a massive winery - how cool is that? After a recommendation from friends, we spent a fabulous Saturday afternoon enjoying the wines and food of Lynfred! Who knew such a place existed close by? Their wines are actually pretty decent for an Illinois winery. I've done the Southern Illinois wine trail and obviously, Illinois cannot compete with California and other west coast states in terms of wine - we are limited by our "terroir". Having said that, Lynfred actually produces some decent wines. I particularly loved their Tempranillo - bold, with a spicy aftertaste. We did a wine and cheese pairing, and simply had a wonderful afternoon full of good wine, cheese, and great conversation. And their staff is very friendly - we particularly thought Rachel was fabulous. I've been wanting to try this place for pretty much....forever. I tend to not visit the local wineries for some reason but it was my birthday weekend and I wanted to do something different so I did hit up two tastings locally, this being one of the places. It was Easter weekend as well so I wasn't sure what to expect. I will say that I'd like to return for a tour/tasting sometime, and to visit the store when I have more money on hand because the store has all kinds of cute things, and lots of cute wine glasses for gifts (I'd say for yourself too but me, personally...I have enough wine glasses should I ever have my entire family and all of my friends over for a wine & cheese party). The tasting was $9 but you don't have the tasting AT the tasting bar, you have a piece of paper with what you're drinking and you go outside the store and enjoy your tasting instead of just standing at the counter and downing your samples one by one. I liked that part of it...it wasn't rushed or anything so it was nice. We did have to go back inside to the tasting bar to get our last sample though. Again, I would like to go back here and try more as they have a different list of samples every month. I didn't purchase any wine the first time around either but the quality is good, and definitely worth a visit. read more
