This is a no frills establishment serving the best duck I've ever had. When people ask about amazing duck in Chinatown they usually get directed to Sang Kee. While Sang Kee does have a more extensive menu and more seating, I personally believe M Kee has mastered Peking duck. The fat, the skin, everything is just perfect. I am beginning my journey to rate the takeout roast pork and roast duck spots in Phill's Chinatown, and thus my review is limited to that singular dish. M Kee takes home a solid 3.5 stars. The meats both have good flavor, with the pork being a bit better than the duck. The duck pieces i received were a little bit on the scrawnier side in terms of meat, with a lot of bone. A bit of veggies and lots of rice rounded out the bowl. The presentation of the food was pretty, and the service was fast and nice. Keep in mind theyre cash only. Though i took out, there was a bit of seating inside with the clientele being mostly older Chinese people during weekday lunch. My 47th birthday adventure It rained all day, so I felt the need to pick a Chinese place before leaving Baltimore. My boyfriend also had his heart set on duck noodle soup since he absolutely adores the soup from the Chinese spot in the Reading Market. With those three requirements in mind, M Kee fit the bill. I was overjoyed that there was a table available when we arrived, as there are only three tables in the restaurant. It's mainly a take away place, we had to move a table to get inside. The ramp is a little iffy, but I was determined. We weren't sure if anyone was going to come to our table to take our order, but eventually a woman rushed over and apologized, saying they were busy. Heck, that's how you make the money. Nothing wrong with that. Our food all came in take out containers. Most of the dining area is taken up by boxes and more boxes. They were making take and go meals next to us. I suppose if you can't be bothered to order ahead. Jeremy was disappointed in his duck noodle soup, even with the double serving of duck. All the duck dishes came with the bones still inside. Delicious but slightly complex to eat since you're constantly picking bones out of your mouth. Jeremy said the soup with bland. However, as an entree, Jeremy had Filet Steak with Black Pepper Sauce. It took longer to come to the table, but it was so worth the wait. It was the sleeper hit of the day. Everyone loved it, including our friend who doesn't like steak. Justin had these awful noodle crepes filled with "fried shrimp" that were not at all what we expected. I'm giving up on trying shrimp items at Chinese places. The flavor is always so overwhelming, and not in a good way. Justin said the filling reminded him of cat food. He also had hot and sour soup, which looked good. He seemed to like it. His boyfriend added some of the noodles from his entree to the soup. Brian had roast duck and pork over noodles. He thought the duck skin was a bit more flaccid than he would have liked, but the pork was good. He also said the noodles were too greasy, thus putting them in the soup. I had the roast duck and pork, no noodles. It was perfection and exactly what I wanted in life. The bathroom was out of order, kinda. It's large and accessible, but the sign above the toilet instructed not to flush toilet paper. There were three whole pigs hanging on hooks, ribs exposed, in the back corner of the "dining" area. I felt like it would be uncouth to take a picture. I had a great time and a fairly unique dining experience. Certainly not for everyone, but I bet the take out is phenomenal, too. read more

I love roast duck & pork and M Kee definitely satisfied my craving! Not only do they have good portion sizes, but the food was delicious! For $11 you can get both roast duck and roast pork on a bed of white rice which is good by itself, or you can ask for a side of the roast duck sauce which makes it so much better. The only thing for me was that the roast pork was a little too salty for my liking, but with the white rice it's perfect. We also got a wonton noodle soup with some huge wontons which was totally worth the money. Non-Cantonese style Chinese eateries (think Szechuan, Taiwanese, Shanghainese, etc.) seem to be replacing many of the old school Cantonese restaurants, especially in America's chinatowns. Whilst is has happened a bit in Philly, there are still many good Cantonese eateries here and M Kee is one of the better and more affordable ones. During these pseudo-pandemic times, no dine-in, but service was prompt and efficient. We ordered a half Peking duck (using it as an appetizer for 4), and a BBQ pork (cha siu) HK style pan-fried noodle. The noodle dish was easily large enough to be dinner for 2 people, plenty of noodle and nice frying to produce the right amount of crunchiness. The cha siu was fairly standard and the use of western broccoli diminished the dish a bit. The Peking duck was tasty though I wish we had chosen the traditional thin skins (we had the puffy rice baos, not sure if thin skins were available). I've had better Peking duck but this one was ok. I went Saturday around 4/5 PM and there was no line! They're only open for takeout, so don't be alarmed if the door is locked - they'll come out to take your order and then bring it to you when it's done, which only took a few minutes. I ordered a 1/2 roast duck which cost $12! A little bit too salty imo, but still really good and lots of flavor! They stacked their to-go containers from table to ceiling and it looks sloppy. All of their food is served in plastic to-go containers which is then turned around and thrown away when the customers are finished. Not good for the environment. While waiting for our food, I saw the one waitress wipe down a table and then using the same cloth wipe (still in her hand), pushed down on the garbage can that was full of trash. We picked up rice plates for lunch: combos of barbecue pork and duck with choy sum, and diced chicken and corn (tip: ask for added soft tofu). I had the chicken and corn rice plate, which was saucy and savory with plenty of ingredients. We asked for less salt, and it was still flavorful. The portions are good even for those with larger appetites. We also ordered crispy pork (siew yok), which has great crispy skin and a good meat-to-bone ratio. There used to be more seating inside, but maybe due to covid and/or increased takeout orders there were just 3 small tables, with the rest of the spare space devoted to storage and food pick up. I was barely able to finish my dish, and didn't spend more than $13 for it. Overall: Not a bad place, though I would probably look around for other restaurants in the area before coming here. Nina W., you hit a home run with this one. This is a fantastically subtle joint to eat some really good Hong Kong style Chinese food. As it is not far from my hotel, I gave this one a try at her suggestion. The owners are super nice and accommodating. Their food backs it all up. I had to try their Roast Duck, and I got their pan fried noodles with chicken. It all tasted incredibly fresh, and delicious. Most notably, the duck was superb. Give me more of that stuff any day. It came on a delicious bed of sticky rice which was great in its own right. I absolutely loved the noodles. Crispy and light and the chicken was delicious. It came in a refreshing sauce and the portion was HUGE. There was no way I could finish all of this! One day I was craving for wonton noodles and roasted duck so this restaurant met 2 of my wishes. Everything was great except from the broth, it had no tastes in it what so ever. It was extremely bland like I was eating noodles out of water. However the duck was very good, they roasted it themselves in the kitchen. They also got chicken, whole pig and pork chop! Remind me the day when I lived in Hongkong. I went there around lunch time and saw that they were supe busy, especially for the takeouts! Tip: I like to soak my fried dough in the congee. I came back for their wonton soup, read some review that it might be soggy so I didnt have too high of an expectation and ordered roasted duck with it (just in case), but I was surprised! The wonton fillings were sweet and crunchy bc of fresh shrimp, and its wrapper was soft. Visiting Philly Chinatown can be like manna from heaven after suffering from bad local Chinese food closer to me in jersey. I noticed a lot of 917 phone numbers on storefronts here. Probably a lot of Philly ctown businesses have nyc connections which is not a bad thing. M kee impressed me from almost all angles. Wonton noodle soup had good broth flavor and noodles were elastic and chewy as I like. The actual wontons were somewhat underwhelming but not terrible. A bit mushy and dull compared to say HK wonton garden in Manhattan. I ordered a special recommended by the waiter - stir fried flounder with okra and minced pork in the restaurant's special xo sauce. It was the bomb. The flounder was cut into little chunks and each was stir fried golden brown. This is no easy task. I've stir fried flounder with mixed veggies before and it ends up looking like a mish mosh fish stew. The xo sauce was delicious. Hint of black bean and sweet but not overwhelmingly so. It was like a ctown version of teriyaki. The waiter asked me how it was and smiled when I said it was good. I felt a little awkward given that the place was a hole in the wall and the dish was only like 10 bucks but good service is never a negative. I just had to make sure he wasn't messing with me. Ctown waiters are almost never this friendly! I also ordered a dish of barbecue pork - cha sau ro. Delicious. So fresh and tasty and only $8 for a hearty serving.
