Similar to a previous Maui sushi joint I reviewed, I had high hopes for this place based on Yelp reviews. Sad to say that I could've skipped this meal. My wallet would've thanked me since I dropped a chunk of change for my dinner here. The sushi is average for a hefty price since portions weren't the biggest. The atmosphere and taste felt like a westernized attempt at sushi. I don't mind this so long as I enjoy my meal (have gotten many excellent cuts of fish at places with a similar vibe), but M Sushi was underwhelming. While I wouldn't call M Sushi bad, I think that the value isn't there for the price. I tried a mix of menu items and specials to shake things up, but nothing blew my socks off. To be fair, I wasn't wearing any socks that evening... Let's switch this to: nothing blew my sandals off. Service wasn't the quickest since a single waiter and chef had to take care of the whole restaurant. Since this place was full, I think the addition of staff would help the workers with the stress of preparing and waiting tables. The counter and the menu were slightly sticky so I needed to sanitize. I could also feel the stickiness of the floor on my shoes. Even more concerning, I did see a sizable roach crawling in the middle of the restaurant floor! This was quite shocking since the restaurant is dimly lit and I didn't have my glasses on to see well. Glad that ankimo was available since that's an uncommon treat to find, but sad to see that there isn't the option for toro, chutoro and otoro. Since the option to order ankimo is unusual and fancy (IMHO), I was surprised that the menu only listed tuna! BYOB for those who enjoy some sake with sushi, but I'll be keeping my sandals, socks and other footwear on since I don't feel the itch to return. read more

This is a Korean-family owned spot with a sushi bar, ample seating, and rooms for karaoke. My boyfriend and I opted for the bar seating and got their $45 (each) nigiri omakase (12 pieces). This spot is a BYOB spot, which isn't common and pretty neat idea. People would bring in their own sake or beer to pair with their meals. We didn't know about that so we just got hot green tea ($3 each). Be sure to check out their daily special menu written on whiteboards to the right wall upon entering. - nigiri omakase ($45 each): came with 12 pieces on a single tray. The uni was a bit more fishy than I'd like so possible less fresh. However, they were all super fresh fish and weren't majorly over-flavored so they gave you the option to dip in your own wasabi/soy sauce tray. I just added wasabi to each my nigiri to give it that kick - A5 wagyu with uni on top ($20 for 2pcs): this was very tasty with the same uni taste as the omakase, but the wagyu made up for it. Recommend ordering from their specials menu. - Miso butterfish ($8 for 2pcs): delicious and definitely buttery! Recommend ordering if they have it on their specials. This came out to be around $126 excluding tips. Not bad for a causal spot and fresh fish. It's in a small plaza with some parking. I'm not a sushi expert. So, keep that in mind. I am basing my review on my instinctual reactions. The service was welcoming. We were greeted right away and offered a choice of seating. We were walk-ins on a Friday night, so I think we were lucky we had a chance to sit anywhere at 6:00 pm. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef was young, charming and engaging with us. The $6.00 green salad was fresh, crisp and tangy with shoyu, a dash of vinegar and toasted sesame seeds. There could have been sesame oil, too. Our cucumber roll was so fresh and interesting! A cucumber had been cored, and the center filled with tasty seafood and vegetables, sliced for us to enjoy. The removed core was artfully arched over the plate. Beautiful presentation. The seafood seemed a little slippery for the "shell". Is there a way to hold it all together, so that when I use my chopsticks I don't end up destroying the whole roll? $17.00 (?) The baked scallop roll was flavored unevenly. Delicious, dark eel sauce and yummy mayo-white sauce on top, but in trying to lift parts of the roll, it fell apart and sometimes I would just get tasteless white fish pieces and grains of rice. $22.00. (?). We ordered a miso butterfish, which my husband fell in love with. I ordered crisp salmon skin sushi, just based on the name. It was exactly as described! Crispy, salty, tasty fish skin in the center of soft, tender rice. The presentation was more traditional, with eight little rolls staring at me. The salmon skin roll did not go well with my favorite shoyu-wasabi combination sauce. Too much salt. It was better with a ginger slice or the pickled (?) cabbage. I wish the salmon skin roll had a scallop, avocado or even cucumber in addition to the skin, to even out the saltiness of the salmon. I enjoyed it, but I wavered because it seemed a little TOO salty. However, it is the skin and it IS salmon... so... it probably is supposed to be salty... Just thinking it would be nice to temper out that saline with a bit of fresh vegetable or sweet fish or shellfish. We spent nearly $80 for two people, regular drinks, no alcohol. I think it's a little pricey for the food but I certainly wish them all the best. It's not a terrible place and if you are in the neighborhood, stop by. Their friendly smiles, sincere interest in you, and their creative food ideas will fulfill your dining out whims. read more

Our first night at Maui for our Christmas vocation. We landed around 7:30PM, after checking in the hotel and settled down, we searched in Yelp and found this place. It is a little bit hard to find it, it located behind a parking garage. This is a very typical Japanese sushi restaurant, they only have sushi, roll and sashimi, plus some small plates on their menu, no ramens. Since it is late we want to have a light meal. We ordered their sashimi omakase ，this one is really good, they have 10 different fishes, each one in small potion, so you can try many items, very much like it Aloha roll, delicious!!! First time eating sushi in Maui and I was not disappointed with M Sushi. First things first , Bring Your Own Beer (Alcohol). This is actually a plus. Instead of paying high prices for alcohol, bring your own . Now to the next part, service. It's good service. A little slow and I could imaging it being slower on a busy night, BUT, quality of service is no substitute for fast service. This place is ran by son (sushi chef) and mother (waitress). Considering that it's only them two, I would say it's good service because , the quality of food to make this happen, works. Next , quality of food is excellent!!!! Visiting from Oahu for a day trip and decided to eat here for dinner based off of Yelp reviews. When we first arrived, we got scary vibes from the parking lot, but that goes to show to not judge a book by its cover. The first bite of our meal was complete bliss. From the miso soup to the oyster shooters, everything was pure BLISS. The salmon nigiri melted in our mouths like butter. The caterpillar roll and baked seafood dynamite roll was AMAZING. I decided to use Yelp and search for sushi place, M sushi is the 1 in the list since were in Wailuku area. We arrived like 9:35 pm, not that much people since its late. And we start ordering Seared Garlic Tuna 10 pcs and Marilyn Mon Roll 8 pcs. Next order was the Uni and Fresh Water Eel sushi (they have variety, if you wanna just try it they have 2 pcs but you can order 5 pcs) and Aunty and cousin order oyster shooters. Friendly mom and pop sushi place. Very nice people. Not all the fish was from the ocean. I usually can tell with the first bite of salmon and yup it was farmed. But that's ok, not trying to say anything bad about the restaurant. They were very nice and thats a great plus. I requested only ocean fish and I was not too fond of the fish either. A bit on the fishy side, if you're a sushi eater you'll know what I mean. The only fish that was tasty was the toro from Japan. But it wasn't completely fatty either so not sure if it was farmed or not. I'm disappointed that I'm surrounded by the ocean and still, I had some farmed fish. So ended not eating too much although it was already a fortune. I don't eat rolls so sorry I can't give a review. I believe the owners are Korean owned, again nothing wrong with that. Quality is way better than most sushi restaurants on Maui. They get their seafood locally, imported from Japan and west coast from the states. Really good uni, o-toro nigiri can eat all night, Ama ebi awesome, oyster shooters I feel they have the best on the island IMO. They're rolls are really huge and flavorful. Green tea ice cream when they do have it is awesome! Nice hole in the wall sushi joint and its BYOB,and lots of space inside. I come here once a month to get my sushi fix. We came here for a late dinner at about 9pm. The service was great! Our waitress was so sweet and even though we were some of the last guests, she was very caring and made sure we had everything. We started with miso soup which was good! We also had edamame as a starter and were a little disappointed that it came cold. We ordered the Japanese Hamachi which was sooo delicious! It was an amazing first meal in Maui. We came straight after landing. This place is quite and offers maybe 10 tables total. It's spacious and laid-back. The chef is fast in preparing everything though. My husband ordered seafood salad, and I tried botan shrimp and a roll with scallop. Everything was fresh and delicious. Sushi omakase $45 The omakase consisted if 12 pieces Uni Albacore Amaebi Hamachi Kampachi Unagi Tamago Tuna Salmon Hottate Chutoro Otoro. Presentation was good and portion of fish to rice also good. Big pieces of fish. Fish not quite as fresh as I'm used to. You know how when you eat pieces of fish that pops in your mouth with each of their own distinct flavor? This didn't. Tastes were all kind of the same as if they kept all the pieces in the same zip lock bag so the taste fused into one. (I'm not saying that they do that, just saying as if) The otoro didn't melt in my mouth as I expected, but the chutoro did. Chutoro was great. Btw...chutoro not supposed to taste better than otoro...right? Hamachi not as flavorful as I'd want it, but that's just me. Amaebi and uni were good. Albacore had small kind chewy tendons. Overall: ok. Seafood Sunomono $8 Overall pretty good. More on the sweet side. Everything was good except for the carrots. The carrots tasted horrible like with a chemical taste. Oyster shooter $4 Had to try. Was ok. Cute little thing hehe Garlic Seared Ahi Roll $24ish I love garlic so hence the order. Buggah was huge! Everyrthing tasted good except the 5 pieces of crab shell in the shredded crab meat (one piece each in 5 different parts of the roll. The crab meat is chopped so dang fine...wondering how they would miss the shells. Nothing like thinking your teeth are falling apart then PSYCH only a shell ....then falling apart...then psyche...then 3 more times after that. I'll post the pic of the pieces of shells. Service was a bit slow but there was only one server so that I didn't mind to much. However, honestly the worst sushi I ever had... M Sushi is located in Wailuku, Maui near Tokyo Tei (same building) or near Homemaid Bakery. It really isn't hard to find as long you enter that building. The atmosphere was very mellow and chill. It was not super busy or rushed, possibly because we came when it opened, but that felt nice because sometimes a restaurant that's too busy can hurt the ambience. There's a couple of tables and the sushi bar, like a typical sushi restaurant. It's also BYOB, which I should've taken a part of during my visit. On the menu there are a couple of common rolls (California, Dragon, etc), specialty rolls, sides, and omakase (recommended stuff); Sushi or sashimi. My wife and I got the sashimi and sushi omakase and man they were made beautifully. The sashimi omakase had a really good portion of fish, while the sushi omakase had a really good and fulfilling selection. I'm sure everything else taste amazing. I'd definitely try again! read more

The rolls are more expensive because produce is more costly here than in California. Makes total sense but who cares! You should be gobbling down yummy sashimi!! The bluefin toro was my favorite. Literally melted in my mouth The Marilyn mon roll was also very yummy. Do not dip it in soy sauce! Dip it in the sauce on the plate!! The flavors will literally skip across your taste buds. My bf loved it so much, we're contemplating going here 2 nights in a row. It's in a non touristy area which I appreciate. It's located in a garage/strip mall so plenty of parking!
