They allowed us to stay in our van in their parking lot until the crew arrived the next morning to do a thorough inspection on the van. Mike actually had a good idea what the problem was and ordered the parts so they were available to install the next morning. Everyone we met at that shop went above and beyond to take care of us quickly and get us on the road as soon as possible. We had a check engine light go on in September. He squeezed us in for a diagnosis in late October (yes, he's that backed-up with appointments). He did a thorough check of the car (we felt it was running a bit sluggish), and found a big issue with cylinder exhaust valves, requiring a costly engine repair. He gave me an estimate to do the repair. I asked about a couple of used Subaru cars he had on the lot, and he gave his opinions and costs. I also asked about 'what if it were his car' scenario, and he said he'd repair it, since he knows our car model year is a good one. Given all that information, we decided to repair our car, hoping that he wouldn't discover anything else serious once he took the engine apart. We scheduled for the beginning of January for two weeks. Happily, he did not find anything else after examining the engine and the rest of the car. He was able to get a part custom made, and he completed the job sooner than expected (and at a lower cost than the original estimate). He also gave us a recommendation for the next set of tires (which he advised we'll need sooner rather than later). Our car is running noticeably better (no sluggishness). If only there were more mechanics with the integrity and knowledge that Steve has.

How do they just throw arbitrary numbers for a service and then ring you up for a higher/different amount? I took my Toyota to a local auto shop for its 30k service and the amount they quoted me ($600) for the service was what I paid for when the service was completed - honest business. If no other issues came up during the service then you should be charged at the quoted amount. Also, you should have a standard price for the services. Will never take my car there again!
