Just wanted to let everyone know that I bought a car from a family that had receipts from R&J showing they had a water pump and radiator installed from these guys and when I went in to replace the fan clutch assembly that went out I found four missing bolts four loose bolts, extremely over tightened bolts, two lose radiator hoses that had slight leaks and the rubber intake manifold house clamp was completely loose. I have the receipt showing they worked on the vehicle two years ago. I would keep looking if I where you for a shop that are professional mechanics or if they have done work for you in the past you should definitely inspect there work! Oh and I forgot to mention they forgot to properly align the alternator causing the serpentine belt to rub a groove into the hydraulic belt tensioner housing. I was stranded in Auburn last week and I'm from out of town heading to Grass Valley. I started calling auto shops and this place answered. I just want to say that they were so nice and professioal. I felt really well taken care of. They checked all my fluids and called me regarding every little thing. R & J would be my go-to shop if I lived in Auburn.. The diagnosis and prices were spot on. This is a great place that you can trust. I felt they pushed my car through and made me a priority because of my personal situation...I asked about that and they told me they were a week and a half out with many cars lined up before me. Steve was so easy to work with. Thank you Steve @ R & J for taking great care of me and my car and getting me back on the road. Truns out my water pump had gone out. They had me back on the road by 5pm the next day! Drove up to Auburn for Thanksgiving, and noticed along the way that there was an unsettling "bubbling" sound coming from the engine. Since it was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I had little hope that the car would be able to be fixed in time for us to go back to LA. My father-in-law suggested this place, and when I brought the car around, a) they diagnosed the problem within 60 seconds, and b) they were able to get it fixed THAT DAY. No hidden fees, reasonable prices (way better than LA!), and all-around good guys. Basically the jackpot for a traveler potentially stranded in an unknown town. I also noticed how they interacted with other customers, and there was no upselling, simply information about what types of repairs might be needed in the future and what to look out for. So appreciative to Stephen and Travis for turning our travel nightmare into the adventure it was meant to be. If I'm ever in car trouble in Auburn, I'm coming back here! read more

My Mom, Step Dad, and Sister all had wonderful experiences here and swear by this place. Their cost of labor is normal and they didn't try to charge me anything above market for the part they replaced. My 3 stars mainly concerns the fact they told me they had checked everything and it was only the battery that needed to be replaced. I was even told that everything else under the hood was looking good. 24 hours later my new battery was dead and my car wouldn't start. I called back to let them know the problem and they told me to bring it back in but they would have to charge me the labor to re-check my car. It seems strange to charge someone for work that was suppose to be done originally. I ended up taking my car into a different mechanic to finish the work. I hope my experience from one of the few that gave them only 3 stars because I have heard such great things about them. read more

Horrible. Surprised by the service after I read the other reviews. The clerk was on the phone when I walked in. He stayed on the phone for about ten minutes while I waited. All I got during this time was a finger in the air. He didn't even glance at me. When he finally did get off the phone, it seemed like talking to me was annoying him. He was short and rude. While I was explaining what I need done to my vehicle, he interrupted me to tell me that he doesn't work on older vehicles with converters (my truck is an '88). I told him about an issue I was having with my brakes, and he interrupted again. "What do you want me to do?" he rudely asked as I was telling him. Nothing, sir. Nothing at all. read more

I've been taking all of my cars to R&J for 25+ years. They came recommended by a mechanic at a muffler shop. He said they are the best in town and after all of these years I have not reason to think otherwise. Alan, Art and Steve are great. If you are looking for a slick and clean waiting area, uniforms, coffee, donuts, music or any of that kind of thing (i.e. overhead), this is not your place. It looks like a garage, not a beauty salon. If however, you want super competent, honest guys working on your car, then you'll find it here. They consistently give me great advice on when to invest and when to let the car go. As long as they are in business, I'm going here. Dealt with Allan, who is a really friendly guy. Asked him to check out the brakes on my recently purchased 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. He advised replacing rear pads. Paid $230 for this, which I now realize was way more than I should have paid. Brakes started squeaking the next day, but thought that may be a break-in symptom. Brought it back in 2 weeks later and asked why. They charged me $50 and claim to have fixed it. still squeaks very loud. $280 down the drain for work that I will need to have all the work done by someone else. Premium price tag for low quality work, at least for brakes. read more

I elected to go to JR due to the yelp review A very Lucky find! - They turned out to be better than I expected....really nice guys. knowledgeable and honest!!! First repair- good job, done on time and within the estimate. Second time- I came by to get a battery replaced- this is how honest they are... Alan took a look and noted that it was probably still under warranty from our car dealership- He could have replaced it and charged me- but he didn't. I went up the block to the local dealer- had the paperwork transferred from SF no charge for the new battery- Phew! saved me around $150!!! if you are looking for a great mechanic in Auburn- this is the place. read more

It's so ridiculously hard to find trustworthy mechanic shops these days. The guys at R&J have done nothing but right by me and my family. Alan is super friendly and patient, I'm a nineteen year old girl who knows next to nothing about cars yet he took the time to explain everything to me in detail with patience. The first time I went in he quoted me $400 when I picked up the car I paid $216. That's a very rare occurrence in my experience. Now my cars transmission is shot due to the ignorance of an oil change shop(check out my Spee Dee's oil change review if you're curious) and again Alan is working with me and I honestly won't be taking any of my future cars anywhere but R&J. They are a respectable family owned business and they know their stuff. I definitely recommend this place if you're having car trouble. read more

Fabulous service and fair prices! I brought my car in with a cluncking and rattling noise in the steering assembly. Another place had quoted about $800 to replace the steering assembly. Alan quoted me $100 up front and inspected and lubed the assembly, checked for any loose bolts, etc. When I picked up my car he only charged me $50! The noise in the steering is gone! He also found and repaired some items a brake/tire place had neglected finishing the day before which could have caused a serious accident! I won't hesitate to bring my car in the future to these guys and refer to my friends and colleagues. A mechanic you can count on! What a concept! read more

The guys at R&J Auto Repair are extremely knowledgeable about car repairs! They rebuilt the engine in my Mitsubishi about 5 years ago and that car runs better than when it was new. I brought it in recently to get a new timing belt and repair some other things. And I swear it still runs better than when I first got it. These guys know their stuff and they are hilarious to boot! From other reviews I guess these guys are good at what they do, but their customer service is awful! I was in a jam and they couldn't care less. Here's what happened... A friend and I left Roseville on a Friday afternoon this past July in our lifted Wranglers, heading for a long weekend of fun at our high sierra cabin. Our wives were joining us later that night. Just after 4 pm, my Jeep seriously overheated in Auburn and the oil pressure dropped. I stopped at R&J Auto, & was told by a grumpy old man that there was nothing they could do for me until Monday. He wanted me and my jeep out of his driveway as quickly as possible. He suggested I buy a thermostat at NAPA and install it in the parking lot. Next stop was Neighborhood Auto. They dropped everything, tested my radiator, found a replacement and installed it at a reasonable fee. The whole thing took only 1 1/2 hours from diagnosis to rolling again. They saved our vacation and went overtime on a Friday afternoon to help me out. Now, three months later, my Jeep is running great still. 6 stars out of 5 for these guys!
