Ma Ma Wok, I love you for your offering of all the Chinese delicious foods, but veganized and equally delicious. As far as atmosphere, it's super casual, no cocktails, not much in the way of ambiance. Think of it as primarily for takeout, with table service. No matter! You come here for the huge portions of Chinese comfort food. Service is excellent and friendly. I could've spent a half hour with that menu, as I wanted to make sure I ordered the right things. This is the perfect place to share, as with many Chinese food that's done right and well, you order protein dishes apart from vegetable dishes. So we had Beijing veg duck, dry pot, eggplant with basil (they were out of the string beans that I really wanted to try) and shumai to start. All of it was delicious. I knew the eggplant was a bit of a risk, as so many places will serve you rubbery, bitter horrors. Not the case here! It's sweet with melt-in-your-mouth texture and I appreciated that it had other veggies mixed in with the generous portion of eggplant. The protein dishes are full of taste and texture-- no need to add seasoning to the dry pot (perhaps a little more spice but they have red pepper flakes on the table). I'd expected more of a bean curd skin/yuba for the duck, but instead it's seitan (I believe) and chewy in a good way. The shumai was tasty but too starchy and full of rice when I expected protein. Not sure I'd order that again with so many other tempting apps, including other dumplings, on the menu. If this were in my neighborhood, I'd be over the moon, because I'd finally have a viable option for good Chinese takeout. As a vegan, normally I'm regulated to the same old Buddhist's Delight. This is authentic Chinese food at its best. Everything tastes amazing and fresh. You can truly tell that everything is made to order -- nothing has that "sitting around waiting to be served" taste. I ordered the General Tso Tofu, and it was like little heavenly bites of perfection. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with flavor. Absolutely delicious! I make it a point to visit every time I'm in town. This place is truly a gem. The customer service is always five-star -- they take the time to explain the dishes if you have any questions or concerns. The dining area is also very clean and welcoming. Food was very delicious and flavorful! I brought my fiancé here (he eats meat) and he LOVED it as well. I highly recommend this restaurant whether you're vegetarian or not. The texture they've achieved with their 'chicken' and 'beef' is impressive and very appetizing. Staff was friendly and accommodating. I also ordered a side of their mayo sauce. This is an all vegan establishment, so everything listed and spoken about is completely dairy/egg/meat free. The house fried rice was exciting! This is a terrible and unhealthy place to eat. It is supposed to be vegan/vegetarian, but everything is covered in grease or some slimy sweet sauce. I ordered General Tso's Tofu, and it had three small pieces of broccoli. The picture below is blurry, but you can make it out. Check out the beef noodles. All noodles, scant pieces of fake beef, and slivers of carrots and cabbage. This is a vegan/vegetarian restaurant. The food is supposed to be healthy. Look at that dish for $14. Where are the vegetables??? I was completely unsatisfied with my order, and they refused to make me feel whole. I have been a long-time customer, and they did not offer anything to keep me as a customer. I will never spend another dollar in that place. Also, they charge a fee for using your credit card! Went on a day trip with my sister to see beautiful Charlotte and decided to stop at her favorite restaurant for carry out. We placed the order online and we ordered almost everything on the menu (kidding), we were advised the food would be ready in 30 minutes. I ordered Lo mein and general tso's "chicken" We made it to the restaurant and the parking lot was empty and our food wasn't ready...so we decided to check out the donut shop next door. We waited for over an hour before they called us to the door (they place your food on the table outside). The food looked pretty good and you can tell it was fresh made because it was hot. My lo mein was really good, no complaints there, but my general tso's chicken was tough. They were like chewing chicken gizzards, although it wasn't meat. My sister ordered the exact same, but she also got the crispy duck (vegan) and fried rice. I wish I would've ordered the duck because it was seasoned and cooked to perfection. A friend told me about this vegan Chinese restaurant and how great the food was. So my dining mate and I decided to have lunch there. The staff was extremely accommodating, answering questions etc. Because no inside dining, they moved a small table for us outside. We ordered a spring roll, Chai tea , General Tso Veg. Meat and a Veg. Fish with curry sauce. The spring roll was good and basic, , the Chai tea sweetened with almond milk. Way to sweet for me but my dining mate enjoyed it. My General Tso dish made with the wheat gluten was tough and chewy and not enjoyed by us at all, although the sauce was good. However the fish with curry sauce was tender and enjoyable. The "meat" dishes are either made with soy or wheat gluten. So the choice of chicken, beef, shrimp or fish etc are prepared with soy or wheat gluten. The menu features, appetizers, soups, noodles, Main dish entrees, combo dishes , vegetables, a variety of rices and desserts such as Chinese doughnuts and Mochi ice cream. I found the menu pricey. Portion size was good and food served in disposable containers. I would try some other menu options perhaps at another visit. read more

After panning this little family-run restaurant a couple of years ago, this follow up was way overdue, so I stopped by today for chicken and broccoli to go. The two ladies who work out front were indeed very friendly and the food was prepared quickly and arrived piping hot. I was particularly pleased with the perfectly cooked broccoli which arrived bright green and crunchy, instead of being overcooked like so many other places. The fried rice was also very good. The chicken however was thinly sliced, almost like lunch meat. Not that I didn't like it I mind you, it was just different. I was also impressed with their upgraded dining room and with this 98 sanitation grade. Updating my review from 2017 as so many changes have occurred since then. First, they went full vegan a few years ago and it was amazing to watch the vegan community support them as they dealt with a potential loss of a large portion of their original customer base. Next, their menu is always evolving and there are so many fresh flavors and style offerings. I love how the veggies retain their crunch in all their dishes and the food has been immaculately consistent over the last year+. Some of my favorite dishes that I have a hard time straying from: ham fried rice, kung pao chicken, salt&pepper (shimeji/king oyster mushroom - both are great) and drumsticks. Tons of options exist if you don't like the mock meats. Finally, the people are what make this place complete. Very kind and always offering suggestions based on what you may be in the mood for. I especially appreciated the approach they took towards life during this pandemic. They closed the dine-in option and have a process whereby you place an order and simply call when you are in the parking lot to confirm you are ready to pick up your food. They then place your order on the table they set up outside for a great safe experience. One of my favorite spots in Charlotte! read more

As vegetarian Chinese places go, this is one of the ones that makes American Chinese food with fake meats. I'm not a huge fan of fake meats as I never found the real thing of any appeal, but I still managed to find some intriguing dishes. Of the two I tried, the zhajiangmian had an excellent sauce with some sort of minced fake meat and a fresh garnish on top. The lemongrass tofu wasn't quite as good, it had not enough actual tofu and wasn't as spicy as I'd hoped. The menu was wide, and while their tastes and mine don't entirely overlap, as I'm not big into fake meats or broccoli, I could definitely find something worth trying. read more

As a a pesca-vegan, I wanted to surprise my mom by not telling her the meat was fake. But this inedible concoction was not the kind of surprise I intended. Sorry, mom. Perhaps we shouldn't have arrived 15 minutes before lunch closing. At the very least, the food should match the menu description. Their sweet n' sour "chicken" contained potato instead of pineapple (as listed). Whyyy. My dish contained a minuscule amount of UFOs (Unidentified Food Objects), making this a particularly tragic substitution choice. My mother's cashew "chicken", on the other hand, was worse--and didn't even have cashews. The scarce amount of chicken she did have looked like shaved tofu, opposed to more normalized bits of chicken or even fake meat, which I can attest to in Los Angeles. 75% of her order was vegetables, unlike mine, which she describes as "a cross between sinewy muscle and tree branches." I am HOOKED on Ma Ma Wok. They've got some really legit flavors and types of foods that are authentic. The lo mein has GREAT flavor and it's not just the sauce... the char from the stir fry really deepens the depth of umami. They use some great ham/shrimp alt meat that really give the impression of their inspiration. The "fish" alternatives are unbelievably like the real thing. The lemon fish is like a fried fish filet - an amazing texture. The fish entrees are fried and wrapped expertly with seaweed and flavored that it's like eating the real thing. Fish is one of the things I still crave despite trying to go more plant-based. This really hit my craving. The sticky rice sui mei is yummy - bc who doesn't like sticky rice? Holy Hidden Gem! This place is a bit off the beaten path, but really holds its own since not many places can claim they are entirely vegetarian. Super un-assuming... and easy to miss... Small dining area.. probably five booths around the perimeter and then tables in the center of the restaurant. The service was excellent and very polite... we didn't have a dedicated server (my guess here is it is "all hands on deck" 24/7 so everyone gets taken care of). I was super blown away at the menu (with pictures). It was super helpful especially since the menu still listed "chicken, beef, pork, etc" but its not... it was almost like a magic show with food! Probably my favorite part is that each table had a hand-drawn "recommendations" card... of which I took each of those recommendations to heart. Ordered the fried wantons (based off the hand drawn placard) and the General Tso Tofu... came with your choice of rice. OMG super tasty and delicious... I had a friend that ordered the BBQ Pork Buns and the Zhajiangmian noodle. I'll let the photos speak for itself. I'm a little bummed.. I want to keep this place a secret from the masses, but really everyone should come down here and try what Ma Ma Wok is doing.
