Macayo's is your pretty standard Mexican restaurant. We got the Signature Sampler to try a little bit of everything, and the green corn tamale bites were the real winner there - something different and really tasty. The combo fajitas were decent, the steak was nice and tender, which is always a plus. But I felt like it could have used a little more seasoning. The mini chimichangas were fine. Our server wasn't around much, probably because they seemed a little understaffed that day. Honestly, with so many other amazing Mexican food options around here, I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back. But hey, if you happen to be in that shopping area and just need to grab some food, maybe if it's not too crowded, you'll have a better experience than we did. read more

I used to go to Macayo's in Tempe and haven't been to Macayo's in years so I decided to stop here for lunch. The food is great! It hasn't changed a bit. The service was also excellent. Within 30 seconds of sitting down, I had a server giving me a menu and a drink with a big lemon wedge in it. The food came out very quickly after I ordered. Perhaps this is because I was there in the afternoon and it wasn't too busy. Ambience is fine nothing to comment on really. It's a large room with a bar in the middle and lots of windows. This place is run by buffoons. Waiter was essentially incompetent and wholly disgruntled. From physically serving food and drinks, to order accuracy, to correcting all incorrect items, he got it all wrong and the manager did nothing to remedy the situation. Walked into a half empty restaurant. Bartender told us to wait for a hostess and ignored us thus moving forward. No hostess for 12 minutes or even wait staff - everyone just staring and waiting outside of the bar. Leaving and only then did the host finally appear to tell us there is a 25 minute wait for a HALF EMPTY restaurant.. This place is a soon to be out of business restaurant with this zero care service business practice. I can only imagine what is happening in the kitchen if the greeting staff is so dismissive. We recently moved back to the Valley after a few decades away. My wife was craving some Mexican and we thought we would give this long time Phoenix institution a try. What a mistake. we arrived around 7:30 pm to a virtually empty restaurant. There was one table of men who appeared to have just come from the WM Open. We were seated at a table quickly. Shortly after being seated, we discovered that the table top tilted at a 45 degree angle with the slightest pressure on any side. Not being one to want to wear our drinks and eventual dinner, we asked to be relocated to a table that might be in better condition. The waitress (70+ year old woman who was obviously bitter about having to work past 7:00 or work at all) and the snippy Manager (short shit with bleached blonde hair) were less than hospitable but accommodated us. You would have thought we asked for a free round of drinks. How insulting??? We ordered two simple dishes: Chicken Burrito (double beans vs rice and beans) and a taco. The burrito was almost inedible. It appeared they had opened too many containers of Sour Cream, because my burrito was dripping in it. I did manage to find a few pieces of chicken, but this was clearly a Sour Cream Burrito with chicken. I would have said something if the waitress ever came back to check on us. Clearly our presence was a huge imposition on her evening. One worker started to clean the floors (at 8:00) just to add to further emphasize the attitude of the business. We paid, (tip = their attitude) and left with a vow to never return. I used to be a secret shopper for other restaurants in the Valley and I would have had this entire crew fired the next day. If you hate your job or hate people, don't work in the hospitality industry. Fail, fail, fail on all levels for this restaurant. My family has gone to this Arizona chain for decades and while some of the other locations are sadly neglected, this one has great service and accurate orders every time! 'Exactly what you're craving...tender shredded beef or chicken, refried beans seasoned perfectly, all of the cheese to please, great house chips and margaritas, and every favorite Mexican entree, app & dessert. Even though the portions are so generous I can never finish my dish, I definitely "somehow have room for"the Fried Ice Cream for dessert! The cinnamon-cornflakey-crispy coating is so delicious over the super cold solid ice cream, and check out the video of the chocolate sauce draping and drizzling over it all as we pour it! For our entrees, we had the green corn tamales (with AMAZING Baja Sauce), Fish Tacos, and loaded nachos. You cannot get a better deal anywhere than these perfectly cooked tender shredded beef nachos loaded with cheese, refried beans, and a huge scoop of sour cream and avocado!!! I had the "half order" for $8.99, and it was the hugest mound of heaven. The Baja Sauce that came with the tamales was so incredible I wanted to steal it and pour it all over my nachos. It's a decadent blend of white cheese and cream cheese. The service was spectacular, and I love the ambience of the restaurant. There's a nice amount of space between tables, and the booths are comfy and large. Margaritas are only $7.00, beers $4., and if you're going to order two or more margaritas, definitely get the take home ceramic "Margarita Mug" (that I call the collector's goblet) for only $11.99 with $4.99 refills. Here's another tip: If you sit at the bar, there are extra special appetizer prices. The restaurant was clean, and what I appreciated most was that every ingredient was cooked perfectly and served quickly while fresh and hot. It would seem like something to take for granted, however at another popular Mexican restaurant where I dined this month, the refried beans were served dry as well as the shredded beef, it took so long to get the food, and their margaritas tasted so strange/bad that I couldn't or didn't want to finish it. So, if you're contemplating where to head for your fiesta before the siesta or the perfect Tex-Mex (American Mexican) dinner, this Macayo's location is the perfect choice! read more
