Talk about some tasty sammies in an unexpected location! After multiple locals recommended this coffee shop/market/sandwich shop hybrid, I knew it was gonna be good. And when I saw the 5-star average on Yelp, I knew it was gonna be good. But when I walked in and saw the craft beer, local food products, and organic snacks, I knew it was gonna be great! And great it was. On our way to a kayak and winery tour, the bf and I called ahead (at the recommendation of our guide) and scooped up sammies to enjoy at the winery. We've been in the sharing mood lately, so we opted for the garden veggie wrap and the veggie panini and went halvsies once we paddled our way to the winery. Even over an hour later, both sammies were still delicious. We both agreed that the panini trumped the wrap, but honestly I think that's in part because it just held up better in the bag. Made with pesto, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, spinach, and provolone, the ingredients were perfect on the fresh and fluffy wheat bread. The pesto was especially flavorful... it would be amazing on pasta! The wrap consists of cream cheese, carrots, cukes, and a few other fresh veggies. Again, very flavorful, and something I would totally order again. This is a definite gem on the Eastern Shore, and it's not too far from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, either. Great little place to grab gourmet sandwiches, salads, wraps & various treats right on Rt 13 - in North side. Tiny little place inside & may have to wait a bit when it's busy but definitely worth it. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it's strictly a grab & go place - no seating inside or out, except 2 benches out front. Stopped here on a road trip for a quick bite to eat. It's right off of the highway which is very convenient. Since they stop serving breakfast at 2pm and they were out of falafel, there weren't too many lunch options (although the smoothie menu did look really good). I had the salmon salad panini, which came with spinach and provolone. It was inexpensive and tasty but the portion was kind of small. The paninis we ordered could have been more browned/grilled, but I guess they were trying to give us quick service. A few hours after eating here I felt sick to my stomach. I don't know if it was the spinach, the salmon salad, or something else, but I guess that's one of the risks of eating in an isolated area. Although I enjoyed eating on the covered porch and watching the traffic go by, the interior of the store is very cute. They sell a variety of snacks, candy, pet supplies, and local art. The Route 11 sweet potato chips we picked up were really good. They were also baking fresh chocolate chip cookies when we walked in! This wasn't bad for a road trip stop, but I was expecting better based on the positive reviews. read more

He also ordered a slice of lemon pound cake which was SO FREAKING GOOD. And I also got a mango smoothie which was the best and super refreshing. Really cozy inside, super sweet staff, and tons of things to browse! They have beers, candies, coffees, and even stuff for dogs. We were traveling down Rt 13 around midday this summer (2020) looking for lunch and found little except for off-the-path dine-in restaurants, ubiquitous fast food with drive-thru lines circling the parking lot, and filthy gas station food counters (yes - you, Royal Farms.) We expanded our search and found this place right on the main road. What a delightful oasis in a food desert! Nice selection of delicious and fresh wraps, paninis and smoothies in a clean storefront, with a small gift shop offering craft beers, gourmet snacks and candies. Trying to eat healthy food on Virginia's Eastern Shore is not easy. Even IF you manage to find vegetarian or vegan food (i.e. plenty of fruits and vegetables), it is likely to be served ultra-processed (full of sugar/flour and oil/fat). While these foods are high in taste and perhaps appropriate for many of our celebrating and vacationing visitors, they are extremely detrimental for the long-term health of our full-time residents. Machipongo Trading Company, however, is the unusual local spot which can serve both communities--locals and visitors. They are willing to tailor any of their foods... and serve the best falafel and bean-burger on the shore. While both are processed, you can skip the bun, have it served in a bowl, remove dairy toppings, etc. It would be ideal if they added some poke-type options [ex. beans (shelled edamame, garbanzo, or black), rice, corn, avocado, red onion, pineapple, mango, etc.], where sauces (ex. sesame ginger) can be added or left off. Shy of that level of unprocessed options, however, their willingness to customize their dishes makes it one of the best options on the shore. read more

We visit Eastern Shore often throughout the seasons and have been stopping at Machipongo Trading Post for several years. This shop has a new look and is right off the highway. A must stop for any traveler or Eastern Shore regular. When we go for a weekend, we visit about once a day. Yes, it's that good! We love this place. We bring friends here and they love this place. Everything here is fresh and delicious. Our favorite is the veg panini add chicken salad on rye. Yum!! The pesto makes this already tasty sandwich unbeatable. It's not officially on the menu because it's two sandwiches put together but you should try it! We also really enjoy the falafel wrap or hummus wrap. Great iced coffee blends. Gourmet snacks and chocolates. Select IPAs. Just saw a few large bottles of hard-to-find Hardywood Peach, Blueberry. They also allow mix and match 6 packs on all their regular size bottled IPAs. Good selection. Who expects this out on Rt 13? No one, that's who. Gourmet rt66 chips and various gourmet chocolate bars that are the best in their class. Don't miss the homemade sweet potato biscuits or coffee/crumb cakes in the display case. Homemade and you taste it in the best way possible. I confess I absolutely can't walk out of there without my Island Creamery fix. The only place you can get the ice cream besides Chincoteague. Some of the best ice cream you'll ever have - top-rated ice cream in the US. I love marsh mud (thick rick chocolate like uncooked brownie mix but creamy as sin and will stain your teeth until tomorrow but who cares it's soooo good), almond joy (just like the candy bar) and iced nirvana (smooth subtle coffee shazam). They have a special doggy section, which is just cute. Floatable dog toys and high quality dog treats like Mother Hubbard. Try it. (Not the dog treats. Unless you have a dog or that's your flavor profile). Try the sandwiches! So good. Wish I had this place down the street from me in VB. read more

Here's another book not to judge by it's cover. We're driving home from the beach, and start hearing lots of hunger grumblings...Yelp to the rescue. We pulled over based on the Yelp rating, but then upon exterior inspection, half the crowd was ready to keep looking. Luckily the youngest among us said "let's go...yelp says it's good"...and lucky we listened. I went inside, and the menu looked good, and they had a cute seating area off to the side. This was the perfect lunch stop for us on the way to OBX. The people were very nice, the food was delicious, and they had lots to choose from. It took just a few minutes for our sandwiches to be ready. I had their daily special, ham panini with sharp cheddar, honey mustard, and tomato on a pretzel roll. My husband had a veggie sandwich. Both were very yummy. We used the restroom, which was clean. They had coffee, smoothies, and other goodies, plus you can purchase wine, beer, artwork and pottery from local places. The first time we stopped at MTC, it was a happy accident. The second time, we delayed our start to arrive when the open at 7. Saw this place as we were headed to the Barrier Islands Center (on the other side of Rt.13). Someone from the center told us to check out the Machipongo Trading Company, and order the "ice cream with the shot of espresso on top" which I did, and holy cow, it may have been the best drink I've ever had. Or milkshake. Or coffee float? Totally a coffee float. So delicious! The service was friendly, and I stocked up on some of their dark roast beans before I forced myself to leave before I bought and ate everything in the quaint place. I'm from Maryland's Eastern Shore and was expecting the food to take awhile since so many of us came in at once. The food came out quick and was awesome. The service was so friendly and exactly what you would expect on the Eastern Shore. The store itself is adorable. They sell all sorts if local goods and have nice seating area. Food was super fresh, lots of vegetarian choices for those so inclined but also some great meat options as well. Got the Turkey Cubano with pesto and it was great. We stopped here on our way back from Florida yesterday (3/8/15). with a craving for seafood. I read all of the reviews and had to give it a try. So glad we did! The food was delicious and huge! We both had the crab soup. I got the combo seafood platter (crab meat salad and shrimp salad) and my boyfriend had the open face crab meat melt. It was awesome! We also shared a half pound of chilled shrimp! Everything was so relaxed. We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back!
