The only place I go to for Peruvian food in the LA area. The inside is quaint and I like the minimal decor, but the dining areas can get loud due to not enough carpeting. I recommend picking up from their direct website! I always love sipping on an Inca Cola. My favorite appetizer is their Causa de Pollo, or Causa de Atun. Lomo Saltado is a classic entree, but I always get the Tallarin Verde con Bistec Frito. For those who do not know, this version has a pesto-like pasta, with steak! They also have chicken and other options to go with it. Highly recommend this place! read more

Hole in the wall mom & pop type place (which I like vis a vis corporate restaurant industry choices) puts their focus on the food & less on the decor, so don't expect a plush banquette, linens & flowers on the table. I tried the arroz Pollo chaufa (chicken fried rice). Food served hot minutes later with a roll & 2 sauces, the green lettuce based one Peruvian restaurants have & a spicy habanero sauce that packed some big heat. I left with my taste buds pinging from the flavorful tastes that good Peruvian food leaves lingering in your mouth after a well made & tasting dish. Service was prompt without being doting. My family and I have been coming here for years. Hadn't been in a while and I'm glad to report that it is still as good as I remember. I always get the ceviche mixto and it is to die for! Called at 12:05pm for pick up, called back at 12:10pm to notify that my lunch was delayed and I'd go at 1:30pm to please hold off. The lady said they already started my order and I told her I was not going to pick up food sitting for more than an hour. She then advised that they would make the fries fresh when I arrived for my lomo saltado. I arrived and asked if the fries were in the bag, the guys said yes. I walk back to work to find there were no fries (I should have checked). I called back and they argued about it saying it's in my order. The lady then says she will bring it to me and I declined the offer because I specifically asked since I was told over the phone that the fries would be fresh. The issue I have with this is the lack of taking responsibility and still keeping the full amount when I didn't receive all of my order. I went here with two other friends and we shared 3 dishes with each other and the purple corn drink. It all tasted so good! The green sauce used with bread as small appetizer was a nice start to dinner. Who would of known the green sauce had a kick in it. If too much and you're spice tolerance is totally weak like mine then BETTER HOPE YOU DIDN'T FINISH ALL YOUR WATER YET. My friends and I tried #47, 59, and 61. Since we couldn't pronounce any of the food we just pointed at the number. The waitress was super nice about. Dish size was reasonable for their prices. We all craved seafood so those 3 #s all had seafood in it. Even though it was street parking out front, there was plenty of room so totally worth it. Meters expire at 8pm, place closes at 8:30pm. This is a spot that my family and I have been coming to for many years. This family-owned restaurant used to be a lot smaller before it expanded into the larger space that it is at now. The expansion alone should speak for the traffic that this restaurant gets. There are so many Peruvian restaurants in the valley and mainly in the Van Nuys/North Hollywood area. And I mean real Peruvian food, something that my parents would cook for me growing up. Machu Picchu is among my favorites for great food and what sets them apart from some other Peruvian restaurants is their addition of "chifa" on the menu (Chinese-Peruvian cuisine.) There can be a few items served in specific days (picarones on the weekends), but for the most part, I always stick to ordering the same thing: saltado de pollo and ceviche. Saltado de pollo, pollo a la brasa, is a staple in Peruvian food - potatoes are used in almost every single dish - and if you can't make a good saltado, well, it'll probably speak for the rest of your menu. Saltado consists of french fries, strips of red onions and tomatoes all cooked with together with flavorful seasonings and meat of choice (beef, chicken, shrimp, mixed) and served with a side of white rice. Sounds simple and it is, but it's so delicious! Their ceviche is top notch. Really good chunks of white fish cured with acidic properties and served with cooked potato, sweet potato, Andean corn and canchita (Peruvian "corn nuts") and topped with red onion strips. Whether you're new to Peruvian food or already know what you like, Machu Picchu will be sure to please. read more

What?! I haven't posted a review for this hidden gem!?????? Ok so here it is. Firstly, the only Peruvian food I was familiar with was back home in NY my mom made Papas a La Huancaina, that a Peruvian friend taught her. That was my experience, BUT I discovered so many great dishes ( and I'm working through the menu) with this spot. I love their calamari and FYI they specialize in seafood! Their Chauffer rice Macchu Pichu style has chicken, shrimp and beef. This dish is awesome! Well portioned, seasoned and perfect! I also enjoy their wonton soup without the pork! It's a huge serving with veggies, noodles, shrimp, chicken and of course wontons. It's well made with an awesome ginger flavor. Lomo Saltado is delish as well. Next time I'll try the fish chicharrón and everything else on the menu. The restaurant itself is quaint and with a beautiful mural of an old Peruvian town that makes you feel like you're there. The service is good, but be sure to wait as they cook to order. Price is a bit high but well worth it! A must! read more

There is some thing very nostalgic and cozy about this place. The simple tables, place setting, decor, and soccer playing on the tv. I've eaten Peruvian food in Peru and nothing truly compares to the flavors & spice of the native lands. In fact, that is the reason I'm afraid to try Peruvian food in LA - but someone has to do the WORK. Portion sizes are HUGE!! You definitely get your bang for buck. I ordered the Aguadito soup and it came in the size of a salad bowl, lol. The lomo saltado was good...definitely not the best I've ever had. Terrible service. Got charged $80 and was only given half of my food. The gentleman on the phone was rude. When I arrived He confirmed with me I had all my food. Once I arrived home I was missing half of my order, I called back got the same gentleman and instead of apologizing for his mistake he kept saying I took the food. He finally checked and confirmed the food was there. I asked for the food to be remade he denied my request. I had to drive back waste gas to pick up Cold food. My friend brought me brunch one morning as he was being his cute Peruvian self. He brought me some Lomo Saltado, Aroz Chaufa, & some Chicha (drink). OH MY FCKN GOD! Lomo saltado: Was meat w/ fries & it had some type of juice to make it somehow soggy. But it wasn't gross or anything. I'm assuming it's the meat's natural juices w/ a hint of lime :) - My fav! Aroz Chaufa: Pretty much chicken fried rice. Chicha: Is by far my new favorite natural drink. Apparently is purple corn, honey, & lime. Suuuuper sweet and refreshing. I truly enjoy this place for 2 reasons: 1) Service 2) Food Being located in the rather grungy streetside of Van Nuys & Victory, this place won't win any awards for ambiance/setup. The walls are hung with stagnant posters of the Andes mountains, the tables & chairs are likely purchased at a local Target store, and the menus are stained...but... There is a but. The food here is wonderful. If you want good, cheap Peruvian food, the buck stops here. I used to come here with my grandparents (both South American born Peruvians) every week, and we ate like starving people. Papas a la Huancaina are done very well, the rich cream, cheese & chili sauce bathing the boiled potatoes with a velvety heat. Sudado de Mariscos was my favorite entree here, and still is. The scallops are just the right balance of creamy & firm, with the shrimp practically crunching in your mouth with a firm juiciness that is so hard to get without watching the pan like a hawk. The lomo saltado is of a good quality meat with a perfectly done stir-fry of vegetables. Inca Kola runs like water here, along with chicha morada & chica jora (by the pitcher, if you like) You can also get your fix on lucuma ice cream as well as alfajores. In fact, I usually bring some home for later =) The servers are unusually attentive, and very talkative in making suggestions here & there if they feel you don't know what you're getting into. Even at a busy time of the day one server or another will be checking on your table to make sure all is well. All in all, don't pass this place up! Delicious! Don't be fooled by the exterior this food is as authentic as it gets. They start you off with some hot bread and the staple green chili sauce, slathering your bread in this sauce is a must! Lomo Saltado is my meal of choice I've yet to find a place that does it like this. Lots of juice that the rice soaks up and makes the dish great from start to finish. Keeps me coming back. Their ceviches are also done right! And the jalea is another seafood packed plate that's great for sharing. The other restaurants on Van Nuys appeared to be closed for the holiday, so Machu Picchu got the call-up. Worth every penny. The papa ala huancaina was one of the best things I've ever had. I'm going to have to find a good recipe for that, because I don't know if I ever want potatoes another way. I went ahead and tried the purple drink, and while I didn't care for it, it didn't detract from an otherwise fantastic experience. The fastest service I've ever received, and while our server was amused at my inability to pronounce anything in Spanish, he made sure that I got everything I ordered right, without making me feel bad at all.
