I really wanted to write a good review, because getting a food "tour" of Peru is a cool concept, but the food just wasn't that great. I liked the decor, that they had soccer on, and that the waitress was so attentive though. Yes, the choclo and sauce appetizer is cool. Ask for the spicy sauce with your meal, it's delicious. The plantains, fries, mashed potatoes, giant cooked corn kernels, and tamale were tasty. Unfortunately, my steak was undercooked, and fatty. The shrimp and sauce were good, but didn't save the dish. Some broccoli florets were not fresh as well, which was a downer. I don't plan on going back. I would rather have delicious Peruvian chicken, and authentic appetizers at a down home Peruvian place. Tried Peruvian takeout in Washington DC, loved the Lomo Saltado and wanted to replicate my experience. Machu Picchu seemed to be the best candidate in the Boston area. Drove through a bit of traffic to get to Somerville for their takeout. Stood on line behind two other parties, and the manager at the cashier never acknowledged me and avoided any eye contact--all I just wanted to do was grab the takeout and go. Finally got to the front of the line and finally one of the wait staff got me my order, which was sitting on the table the entire time. Sigh. Got home and the order itself is delicious, but it was comprised of mostly onions, then beef, and literally only two slices of a tomato. My only other frame of reference was the Chicken Rico's in DC, and their Lomo Saltado was loaded with mostly tomatoes, beef and rice, then onions... for $14. So after fighting traffic, I was very disappointed in Machu Picchu. The order is a hefty $24, and unfortunately I was still hungry afterwards. read more

First time trying out Peruvian Cuisine! We had Leche de Tigre as our appetizer, it's Ceviche with raw fish and shrimps in a cocktail glass, it's very good! Fish is very tasteful, I also tried dipping corn kernels into the ceviche juice and find it very good combination! We had Mar Y Tierra and Seco de Carne a la Norteña as our Main Course. Mar Y Tierra is grilled steak with shrimps on top then we opted for mashed potatoes and veggies on the side, I find the beef and seafood odd combination but it's actually good, changed my way of seeing things for sure, steak was cooked perfectly as how we liked it, the mashed potato wasn't bad at all, so buttery! Then the Seco de Carne a la Norteña is kind of a meh for me, my beef had a scattered texture and I can't seem to find what's it marinated in, rice was a bit undercooked but it has a good taste, will definitely give this another try!! Good appetizers, good desserts, and surprisingly good drinks. I like Machu Pichu and it's always a pretty good choice for a weekend lunch or dinner. The mixed ceviche is a must order. If you come with a large group, consider getting the appetizer sampler. It gives you a little bit of everything and I think their appetizers are more interesting than their main dishes. If you do get mains, don't be afraid to share so that you can try as many dishes as possible. I rarely order juice to drink at restaurants, but their purple corn drink and passion fruit juice is a great compliment to the food here. If you come at night, definitely go for a pisco sour, the passion fruit pisco is really really good. Service can sometimes be a little slow, but it is always warm and friendly. The atmosphere is casual, relaxed and the decor appropriately Peruvian themed. If you are too full for dessert, get some to go. Can't go wrong with some tres leches cake or some alfajores. If still too full later in the evening, they will enhance your coffee the next morning. Great for a dinner with a small group of friends. read more

Delicious Peruvian food in Union Square! We went on a Sunday evening around 6pm and got to sit wherever we liked. The interior has one big open room and two smaller nooks with tables and leather chairs. It's not the most inviting lighting but the restaurant was clean. Our server greeted us with waters and some kind of corn snack with a green sauce. The corn kernels were large and soft on the inside but crispy on the outside! The sauce was a bit spicy and great to dip the corn in. My husband ordered the lomo saltado- steak, onion, peppers, on fries and a side of rice. The steak was marinated and cooked very well and my husband loved it. I ordered the aji de gallina- chicken cooked in a creamy pepper sauce served with rice and a boiled egg. This was also delicious! It wasn't too spicy and was the epitome of comfort food. We ordered the leche asada for dessert. It was served in a small glass bowl and pretty good (although my mother-in-law's is better!). The service was friendly and efficient. I think this restaurant lacks just a bit of something to make it stand out but the food is great! read more

We were really excited to go due the high reviews but ultimately the food was just okay (overcooked steak in the Lomo Saltado[which also wasn't mixed together?], hard avocado in the salad, chicken was okay but nothing to write home about) and the drinks were all right (good mojito and chicha morada, but the Pisco Sour had curdled or something because the egg white topping was chunky). Have to update after a few more visits. In our in person visit, the service was lacking--we had to take it upon ourselves to flag down waiters, to bus our our plates (!!) because they placed us at a super small table and didn't bother to take away the dishes that were done. Then a rat ran between our legs. Getting take out here can also be hit or miss. We just ordered fried plantains and they were really bad--not carmelized, just overly mushy. After looking up how to do Peruvian chicken online and quite successfully making some very tasty marinated chicken with green sauce, I don't think we'll be coming here much more :/ read more

In New Year day, I called to check they were open and to reserve the table for us. One man answered the phone and took the reservation. We showed up the time that we booked but restaurant door was locked. One man (with Black shirt) and one waitress sitting in the restaurant, when they saw us they just shake the heads (NO) That night was pretty windy and cold and we took long walked from car packing to the restaurant. I came here with a big group on a Friday night and they were very accommodating! They have a great menu and food selection. I got the aji de gallina (chicken) and it was very tasty! nice staff, good food, fresh and portion size was fine ... I'd passed by many times but never really thought to try it out, went on the suggestion of a friend. The main reason for 4 and not 5 is just availability of some items that were raved about by other diners but which are currently not available (pollo chan chan among them), so that was a bit disappointing. But what we got was quite alright + I'd certainly go back again ... hopefully they do bring back some specialty items soon though, the manager or owner (?) said they might + explained that they had to make some changes due to covid ... I can certainly understand that, and I also understand that offering some items might be complicated by logistics of food delivery, which sometimes seems to have taken precedence over in-restaurant dining for a lot of customers. YAY Peruvian food! Upon arriving, we had corn and a spicy green dipping sauce - that was great! I got Lomo Saltado: beef tips, tomato, red onion, cilantro, fries with a salty, vinegary, sweet sauce. The beef was well done and the tomatoes melted right into the sauce! However, lomo was served over the fries making them a little soggy. Delicious Peruvian food in a bright, friendly atmosphere. We came on Friday night and were able to get a table for two right away. The service was helpful and quick. The portion sizes were huge. We ordered one entree and one appetizer and that was already enough food for dinner and lunch the next day. The Piqueo Machu Picchu was excellent. The fried yuca was especially delicious. This was a weird experience. Now, my dislcaimer to this review is that I did not have a pisco sour and I don't like ceviche, which I see to be the highlights in other reviews. However, we tried so much of the menu and overall came away confused as to what just happened. We tried to sample as much as possible, and started with the sampler appetizer plate which included chicharrones, anticuchos, fried yucca, huancaina sauce. The beef hearts were grilled nicely and had a good meaty flavor, but I wasn't impressed by the overly dry chicarrones. The much-talked about fried yucca was simply done, and bland without the sauce. For entrees, we tried the pollo chan chan and seco de carna a la nortena. This chicken dish is awkward and bland from start to finish. First of all, see the photos for plating. The first thing that struck me is a large circle of bland green mush surrounded by mustard swirls. There were chicken rolls stuffed with shrimp and spinach, and it lacked salt and seasoning. The same can be said for the green mush (spinach mashed potatoes). Their signature beef dish with beans was flaky and tender, served with delicious rice and beans. It's quite a shame that it was so salty the beef was literally inedible. Now I have a pretty strong salt palate, and this was still mouth-cringeing salty I had to wash down each bite with my purple corn drink. Desserts included rice pudding and the waitress' much-hyped but generic flan. The 'rice pudding' was aptly named arroz con leche on the menu. This is probably true Peruvian style, but when I see pudding I expect some sort of texture, and not just literally milk with rice and cinnamon. Maybe that's how they make it. Either way, it was an odd ending to an underwhelming meal. From all the great reviews here, I expected at least to like one of the 5 dishes. Maybe the menu is very hit or miss, and we just kept missing tonight. Let's chalk it up to an inconsistent kitchen. I ate the complimentary toasted corn kernels all night.
