The outside of this place is an eyesore. I try not to look at it when I drive by. The little diner style building is outdated, rundown, and dirty looking I've passed this place plenty of times with no desire to step foot inside. My co-worker one day said he was headed there for some fried fish. I was surprised by this. I asked if they had fish sandwiches, he said he didn't know, and I decided to tag along anyhow. If I was going to get sick at least I wouldn't be alone. I was relieved to see that the inside was really clean. The bathroom was also really clean, I still didn't touch anything, but it was clean. The place definitely hasn't been revived ever, I don't know when it was built, but it looked like the design was from the 80's, or maybe before I was born. Okay, probably not that old. They have a few selections of fried fish baskets with fries and coleslaw. I opted for just a walleye sandwich and coleslaw. The fish was chunky, golden brown, crispy, flaky, and not at all greasy. I feel sad this is my first time here! I did find a couple of bones which made it a little hard to fully enjoy chewing and swallowing. I also didn't care for the bun, sorta dry. I ordered walleye dinners with fries. The fried walleye was oily, and the fries were limp, and soggy, indicating to me that the oil in the fryer wasn't hot enough. The man at the front counter was not at all friendly, and in fact was very gruff. I live in Florida, and come up to St. Paul a couple of times every summer to visit my daughter, and try to get walleye, and chips at least once during my visit. Aw I wanted to give five stars as I tried to overlook the appearance of this long standing establishment. To walk in and find the central area stacked with cartons of their supplies makes me feel as though I walked in the wrong door to the back room. The menu is short and easy to comprehend with the smaller plate and larger and a la carte choices. The fish is freshly cooked and the service is friendly. There is salt water taffy available in various flavors if that's your vice. I only ordered the a la carte as I can skip the fries and wanted to cook around the fish at home. Add a little Bookbinder's Tarter Sauce and we have an impressive meal. I will be back to try other fish types in the future. This is 1000% better than buying frozen packs in the store or trying to get the crispy fried batter effect at home. read more

I've been to macs a couple of times and like others the place is tiny and smells like fried foods or more so fried fish. The parking lot isn't that big its been full the handful of times I've gone to the place but have been always able to find a spot to park. Of course perfect to go to for a fish fry during lent or anytime during the year. The food is inexpensive, comes with a good portion and never fails. If your craving a delicious, greasy and when I say GREASY it sure is the type that leaves a film on your mouth after your all done wiping the crumbs off your face. Make sure to have a coke on hand to wash it down. I've gotten the chicken before and its a bit on the dry side I would pass on that, the clam strips are smaller portioned but wasn't terrific the highlight of the place is the fried fish. They also put sea salt on their foods and have a container on each table if more is needed. During summer time they have about 3 tables set up to eat outside otherwise expect to either do to-go during busier times or your left stranded without a table considering they have about 5tables in the whole place. Each table also has condiments or all your extra flavor needs to make the dish just right. Overall I would come back if your craving fish on a warm day its a great feeling or just some greasy hang over food to cure that feeling. read more

There's large boxes of potatoes in the dining area suggesting the chips are cut fresh but when fried they are flaccid, chewy, and oddly bitter. As far as bed mates go, it does not complement the deliciously crispy fish. It's like Peter Griffin to Lois and Lois is definitely the more appealing partner. I think more R&D on perfecting the chip will go a long way. The chips with skins, on fried for this length of time, results in a darker, brackish and soggy chip. The service was kind and welcoming! I especially like the table condiments with the ginormous sea salt crystals and malt vinegar. However, it's no substitute for Anchor Fish and Chips. I came here on a Monday, when Anchor is closed, and it wasn't a good stand-in. Price wise, it is identical to Anchor, but not in quality. read more

I'm embarrassed to say that I've driven by this place hundreds of times and have never stopped in. I'm not into greasy fried food (expect for the MN State Fair!), and typically have a fisherman husband who provides me amazing fish. So it's never been on my to-do list. However, we recently stopped by this place for lunch and it was AMAZING! While the ambience is lacking, the food was seriously amazing. We had the cod + chips plate and halibut special, and it was really delicious. A bit pricy, but overall, an amazing experience. If I could give this order zero stars, I would. We had a pretty terrible experience tonight. We ordered our food online at 5:45PM to be picked up at 6:15PM. We arrived there about 6PM, and I went in to let them know I was there. I was told that our food would be ready as soon as they could make it and that they'd bring it out. I noticed that none of the employees were wearing masks of any sort. We waited until 6:20 before I went back in, noticing that people who just walked up to place their orders are getting their food before we are. I was told that the food is made in the order in which it was received and that my food would be coming up soon and there was nothing he could do about it. I asked how long it would take as was told it would be no longer than 15 minutes. At 6:30, I watched a guy walk in and get his food immediately. As he walked back to his car, I asked when he placed his order, and he said he placed it at 6 to pick up at 6:30. So, someone who placed their order after I did got his order before I did. At 6:40, I went back in and asked where my food was again. It was another 5 minutes before it finally came up. The man behind the counter did not apologize, but he handed me a $10 "gift certificate" saying that I can use this for next time. I gave it back saying that I'd be hard pressed to come back after the quality of service I got. Our order was for 4 strips of cod, 1 walleye, 1 chicken strip and one order of cheese curds. I didn't order anything out of the ordinary. I also felt that I was shorted on sauces that I paid extra for. This is the definition of a dive.. pretty run down building and rickety tables and chairs, but you don't go to a restaurant like this for the atmosphere do you? My wife ordered the halibut, and I got the cod. It was phenomenal, and I think the breading was really what made it. It had the perfect taste and texture and they put it on everything (chicken, clams, cheese curds), which is what you should do when you get something right. They also had a jalapeño lime tarter sauce that was awesome on the fish and the fries. We will be back, likely with friends. read more

The fried fish is amazing. The poutine is pretty good. The french fries are terrible. The taffy is inedible. Mac's was my favorite place about 10 years ago, but it's really declined in the last few years. I love the fish, but the french fries are soggy and brown. The only thing the fries are good for is the poutine; drown them in gravy and cheese, and they become edible. Bought several flavors of taffy today, and they were impossible to eat because the wax paper stuck to every single piece. I could barely salvage enough to nibble to taste it. Total waste of money. I keep trying to like Mac's again, but I'm going to write them off for good. Go only if you get the fish; don't get anything else on the menu. read more

We have been going there for 10 years. Experience was so bad we won't be back. Cod fillet is half the size it used to be. More batter than fish. The fries tasted like old oil. And the shrimp are also half the size they used to be. All was cold. No salt or vinegar offered. No taffy available. They used to give you a piece with each meal. Mac's is about as visually beautiful as a pig in pumps. It's on a corner, the restaurant itself is cramped and oddly laid out and the interior looks like a time capsule from a 1980's fishing boat. In other words... it's perfect. There are no groundbreaking techniques or taste combinations here: They don't add fresh snipped herbs to craft beer batter or serve your meal with (insert sensational ingredient of the moment here) tartar sauce. But, you know what? That shit doesn't matter because they know how to perfectly churn out classic flavors in all their glorious simplicity. You'd easily be paying twice the amount for food like this in a fancier looking restaurant (and probably be served half the quantity, too). That being said, Mac's relative proximity to Como park makes it super easy to get your food to go and devour it in the wild like nature intended. I wouldn't recommend making a super long drive with this food in your car, though, as the fish and other fried items tend to get unpleasantly soggy. read more

I've wanted to try Mac's Fish & Chips ever since I moved to the area 14 years ago. Just the shape of the building calls to you... it looks like an authentic fish & chips stand somewhere on the mid-Atlantic coast. But there's a cognitive dissonance: you think there's no way it can be that great... we're in Minnesota! I was afraid I'd be disappointed, and I think that's why I didn't go until today. I could not have been more wrong. The fish is out of control delicious. I got the cod value basket, which is only $4.99 and the ideal size for lunch. My cod fillet was thick, fragrant, and perfectly coated in brown, crispy, batter-y goodness. Underneath the cod was a half portion of shoestring fries, which had soaked up all the juices from my fish. I know there are a lot of complaints about the fries, but I really liked them. They were thin, natural-cut, and flavorful. The basket also came with a little dish of coleslaw, a little pickle garnish, the necessary lemon, tartar, and malt vinegar, and a piece of house-made strawberry saltwater taffy. I am seriously a sucker for saltwater taffy, and that little touch was all I needed to feel like I was really only a few steps from the ocean. I'm back at work, and I still smell a little like vinegar. That is a very, very good thing. read more

I have tried this fish hut three times only because I had purchased a few twin city deals. The first time, not knowing what to order and because the prices were terribly overpriced, I ordered a few baskets which included cole slaw and fries. The coleslaw was sour and we had to throw it away. The fries were limp and soggy, but the fish and tartar sauce was good. The second time, we ordered four pieces of walleye only and it was good, fried perfectly, crispy, not greasy, and served with plenty of their good tartar sauce. In fact, we sat in the car, unwrapped our newspaper wrapped fish bundles, and ate it while it was nice and hot! The third time was tonight as the coupons were expiring. We ordered fish and cheese curds. The cheese curds were pretty good if you like greasy MN State Fair cheese curds which I do not but from eating a few of these grease balls, I knew right away the oil was not hot enough when they cooked them. Fearfully, I opened my newspaper wrapped fish bundle and knew right away it was not going to be good. Exactly as I had suspected, the fish was soggy and greasy. Chef's Choice clear fry oil, Ipswich Frozen Cut Clams tossed in a fryer... how is this a delicate treat? ANY attention to presentation of the food would be an improvement. Wrapped in newspaper with malt vinegar and sea salt. True. Those elements are there, but the experience left me wondering, "Have all these people who rave about this place ever eaten at a really tasty fish and chips house that cared about ambience, presentation, customer service or high quality food?" I'm left wondering. If that amount of so-so fried food and 2tbsp servings of coleslaw came to 12 bucks, we would have raved about this cool divey fish n' chips place on Larpenteur. I bought a Groupon and was totally ripped off. I was even under the price value of the Groupon and the restaurant still wanted to charge me extra to try a piece of fish. I complained to no avail. I called Groupon and got my refund. Also, the food is wrapped in wax paper then in newspaper. However, they didn't do a good wrapping job and some of the ink on the newspaper bled off into my fish. I had to take the skin off because I really didn't want to eat ink. After all that, I ended up winning a free order of cheese curds because I put my business card in there. Fried Food of Mirth: you can find it at Mac's. I opted for the Cod and Clams. The cod was amazing. Batter fried to a crisp on the outside, perfectly tender flaky white fish within. Clams were fine, but I have to say I wish someone around here would start selling fried clams WITH bellies, like they do out east. Fries are standard fish house fries, which means they are fine but not anything special. Portion sizes are extremely fair for the money. It's nice that Mac's offers a smaller sized option for those with a smaller sized appetite. Counter service is friendly and fast. And: salt water taffy! I will be back. read more

This place was awesome. Fish & Chips popped up on my 'nearby' search and I instantly thought "yum!" This tiny little shack gives you a choice of fish (I had the Walleye) which is pretty sweet. The fish is well prepared and delicious. The chips on the other hand were not as great. I still ate all of them... but I kept saying to myself that they could be a bit better. The real kicker for me here was the Cheese Curds. Living in Austin TX real cheese curds are not readily available, so I jump at the chance to order them when I visit MN. The curds here do not disappoint! They are actually very reminiscent of the ones they serve just down the street at the Great MN Get-Together (That's the State Fair for your out-of-towners). So to make a short story even shorter. Go here for the fish, stay for the cheese curds. Mac's, you have officially been added to the 'places to hit up when I visit the Twin Cities' list. Two words: Yum-my. I always seem to crave Mac's on either a Sunday or a Monday, the two days they're closed. I've been talking about it with a co-worker the past few weeks and we finally made the trek out there from Eagan for lunch today. I had their fish and shrimp basket and it was awesome, as usual. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and nice and crispy. The fish was a lot bigger than I remember and very tasty. They were plopped on a HUGE bed of fries that I actually couldn't finish. I don't say that very often. The fries are best with the malt vinegar they have on the tables (or in packets if you get it to go). My buddy ordered the straight fish and chips and when he was done, I noticed him going after every little scrap of leftover crispies in his basket. You know that means that he enjoyed it, too. It's best to eat it fresh there, but even if you take it to go and it's a touch soggy, it's still the best fish and chips you'll get in the metro. read more

My main problem was that for how mediocre the food was, the prices should've been lower. $10 for two pieces of fish, slaw, and a small amount of fries is a joke. The fish pieces are large, which was nice and they were so-so tasting. The slaw was good, as was the tarter sauce. The fries were ultra greasy and okay. My feeling is that if its reallly $10, then give me a HEAPING amount of fries. Also, 3 oz of clams, maybe a handful, for $4 was pretty bad too, especially because they were soggy and chewy. Maybe its the economy plus MInnesota's somewhat remote location, but I can't see paying that much for sub-par fish and chips again. I've seen this place for many years, but always on the way somewhere else. Today I had a craving for poutine, and I'd seen Mac's sign advertising it, so I stopped because I had the time. It was well worth it. First, Mac's is _clean_. You may be thinking that a fried fish place would be greasy, but no. The walls and booths are clean. There is no haze inside from frying. You'd probably feel comfortable eating inside at one of the booths. They have outdoor tables with umbrellas, if you prefer that. I got my food to go. They also sell made-there salt water taffy. I got a selection (they will give you a bag and charge you by the pound). This isn't the hard-as-old-caulk kind of taffy. It was soft with just enough chew, and a little salt crunch. The flavor assortment is good. If nothing else, stop in to get some taffy! So: Poutine. A disclaimer: I'm not from Canada. I last was in Canada when my age could be counted on the fingers of one hand, so I don't recall much. I don't think we had poutine. But I dined at the Canada pavilion in Epcot at Walt Disney World a few years back, and had poutine there. Do you like potatoes and gravy? Chances are you will like poutine: Imagine French fries and gravy with cheese added. It is very tasty. Mac's poutine is delicious. The French fries are cut with the skin on, and I didn't encounter any that were over-done. They weren't crispy inside, but fluffy, which was good for soaking up the gravy. The gravy was nicely done, not salty, a touch of pepper, would be excellent with roast beef. Mac's uses cheese curds. I don't know if this is a violation of some Poutine Code, but it was really tasty! They weren't fried cheese curds, but they were softened by the heat. Bottom line? I'd get it again. I know where to take someone who craves poutine. Also, I got this as a to-go order. They added napkins, a fork, and a wet-wipe for cleaning-up after eating, which was nice. They covered the poutine in foil, carefully loaded it in the bag on its side, and made sure I understood to carry the bag horizontally. It arrived at home just fine, still hot, no mess. While waiting, I looked at the menu board and the signs. There is some snarky humor with their mascot fish, such as the sign on the restroom telling you to push, then push harder, then asks if you figured it out yet. (The door handle has PULL written on it.) They sell fish (cod and walleye were on the menu, but I gather it can change with availability), shrimp, clams, and chicken. You can get it with cole slaw. Given my experience so far, I'll go back and try it, probably taking one of my kids with me to rate the chicken and chips option. I'll definitely return, it is a nice place with nice people, and polite customers (that I saw). I've always driven past this place and wondered, and a Groupon finally gave me the reason to try Mac's Fish and Chips out. I ordered cheese curds and the traditional fish and chips. The cheese curds were amazing! But really, how can you screw up cheese curds? They were greasy, sometimes melted into chunks and completely clogged my arteries. One thing I didn't like about the curds and fish and chips is that the salt they used were huge salt chunks so just one salt flake in a bite made the entire bite super salty. On to the fish. I loved the fish! I'm not really into fried fish, sometimes it grosses me out, but I thought that the fish was perfect and a good serving size. The fries, or chips, were really soggy. I don't know how real fish and chips are supposed to be but I imagined they would be crispy. However, I love soggy fries so this was not a problem. I would also like to note that I ordered my food for take out, so the fries could have been crispy at one point. Staff was super friendly, but I wouldn't recommend eating there. A quick recap of my background. While growing up, I spent my summers living with my family in England. Needless to say, I ate a lot of fish and chips. Traditional style too - right from the street corner, served rolled up in newspaper and topped with extra bits (fried batter that had come off previously cooked fish). Due to the heat of the fresh food, the chips and fish would often times become saturated with steam and become somewhat soggy... but this is the way that you'd get the from the chip shop and is how I define fish and chips to this day. Add in your malt vinegar and salt... a street food masterpiece! Mac's accomplishes these same goals, but in a more American way. When you walk into the restaurant you realize immediately that something other than the hard plastic tables and sparsely decorated walls is what brings people in. It's not much to look at. But upon opening that front door you suddenly get it... you get hit by the smell - fried fish and potatoes. You can actually feel yourself getting hungry. The fish they serve is haddock (comparable rival whitefish to the cod), and comes out hot and delicious. The batter is light and crispy - like all fried food the longer it sits the less appetizing it becomes. Thing is, the fish is fantastic - very clean tasting and flakes easily - so you're going to finish it before it loses its appeal. The chips are more like fries than British style chips, pre-cut and frozen, rather than the roughly cut, gooey mess that I am accustomed to from my childhood. Still, they come out hot and taste good. This was my first time at Mac's Fish and Chips and I probably will not go back unless whoever I am eating with insists on going... The food was hot... but that is the only really good thing I can say. Everything was pre battered, premeasured and in the freezer. They threw it in right after ordered it. My husband and I ordered fish and chips & scallops and chips. The fish was very greasy- but not delicious dive greasy. The batter was giant and full of air with small pieces of fish hidden inside. The fries were mediocre at best... no flavor- just greasy. The scallops were the only thing worth purchasing- 12 for $5 with fries... But I still probably won't go there to get them. The atmosphere is divey, but I really don't mind "hole in the walls". They usually have the best food. I went at 8pm and it was busy. Customers coming in and out. We love Mac's Fish & Chips! Okay so the building looks a little bit rough, but the food makes up for it! On our annual trip to the Twin Cities, we always try to make a stop at Mac's. It's a small place with only a couple tables inside and about 8 tables for outdoor seating. It is always clean and the service is always great! My husband ordered us 2 cod baskets and cheese curds. The cheese curds are to die for! We have eaten our fair share of curds (every new place we go, we have to order them). Mac's for sure are some of the best! The cod baskets come with 2 large pieces of cod, fries, coleslaw and a piece of homemade salt water taffy. The batter is light and fluffy, while the cod is moist and flaky. The fries are homemade and cooked well. The salt water taffy is great and fairly inexpensive to buy extra! We always end up bringing leftovers back to the hotel (almost an entire basket). The prices are worth the value. A 2 piece basket is around $12 and cheese curds around $4. We could definitely get by with 1 basket, but we always get 2. They have great tartar sauce! Great fish & chips! I always get the halibut, definately willing to pay more for such a tasty treat. I was turned onto this place in 2003 when I was doing construction work at the Como Zoo. There are no two ways about it, the place is a dive (I mean that in the most affectionate way possible) It's nice they added the outdoor seating, because if it's busy there's no way you'll find a seat inside. Macs is my go to place for fish and chips. The halibut is my favorite with a generous serving of fries. The quality is always consistant, never old fishy smell or taste. If there were better seating options inside I would give it 5 stars. read more
