I ordered the "Wrangler" special which consisted of a perfectly medium rare cooked sirloin with stuffed shrimp, garlic mashed, and tossed salad. My colleague got the half wrack of ribs, which he said was great. The desserts sounded good, but I was too full. I'm definitely going back. Less than great birthday dinner. Ordered the mini mac and fried haddock. Server convinced me to get steak butterflied because it would take "a very long time " if I didn't. It took a long time anyway and came out dry and unevenly cooked. I can make a better, juicer steak at home. He forgot to add the sautéed onions and mushrooms when he put in the order and when I asked how much longer it would take to get some "quite a while " was the response, so I Said "never mind " and ate the dry tasteless steak and oily green beans (some were hard and not chew-able) as is. Husband's haddock (pieces, not a fillet) was dry and overcooked too. Pace of service was weird. Server first took our drink orders, left to put in the order. Came back a few minutes later and we ordered a starter. He said he would go put that order in, then come back to get our order for entrees, sounded like a good idea but it took him 15 more minutes to come back to get the rest of our order. We ordered entrées then waited another 15 minutes for appetizer (Their version of nachos, shouldn't take 30 minutes to get to the table). Side salads came two minutes after the appetizer then we waited another 20-30 minutes for our entrees. While we were waiting for entrees the server brought us water, kinda weird timing, plus we didn't even ask for or need water. We didn't get any bread for the table even though we saw other tables getting bread. Also, when we got the bill I noticed the server had charged me for a "max pour" of wine instead of the regular glass of wine ($2 up-charge) would've been nice of him to ask before doing something shady like that. Good food, but inconsistent service. This is a great alternative to the chain steakhouses and the steaks and burgers are always good to excellent. The jalapeno cornbread in the breadbasket is awesome, and their salads and appetizers are solid. Service can be hit or miss, and in any case this is not a place to go when you are in a hurry - always seems to take 90 minutes to two hours from when you are seated to when you leave. The dining room is loud (too many hard surfaces), but the new bar area is more a bit less loud and relaxed. Overall casual environment, kids are welcome, and fair prices. So disappointed. Tried to sit at the bar. There were 2 open bar stools. We went to sit and was told they were reserved. We didn't know you could reserve bar stools. Waited about 10 minutes, then was told by the bar manager that we could sit there after 3 more couples tried to sit there. Ordered the "Mini Mac" the signature steak meal and my husband ordered the special which was shrimp and steak. My steak was overcooked, charred and had no flavor. I'm pretty picky about my steak and how it is cooked and seasoned, I'm slightly a purist and prefer a good old medium ribeye with nothing more than salt and pepper (sometimes garlic) I was convinced to think outside my beef bubble and try the "Mini Mac" sirloin with a spice rub (I choose the Cactus Dust as it was mild and wanted to actually taste my beef) I ordered it medium - got it medium well but that is okay ... not like they could un-cook it! Beef was pretty good, not mind blowing but good and not too over priced. I will say there French fries are amazing!! Our waitress was very nice but a little "flighty", although it was busy so that could be why she seemed a little flustered. Interior is a bit cliche ... but it's a steal house ... did I expect anything other than cowboys on the walls? Decent beer selection. Overall very inviting, pricing was decent, food good but no "wow" factor. I would go back and try the ribeye just to see if it stacks up to what I can grill. read more

I visited Mac's for my second time, after my first visit that was over 2 years ago when there was still an outdoor patio. We were seated in the new edition, which was pretty nice. I was not very happy with how close the seating was, the person behind me bumped into me on more than one occasion, which really does change my opinion on a restaurant by a landslide. Our waitress came to the table after a few minutes to ask for drink orders, appetizers, and to tell us the special. I ordered one of the specials with lobster and steak. The lobster side was a sad excuse, it was the meat from one claw. My steak was not cooked how I would have liked it, but that doesn't bother me. When it comes to a steak house you truly just have to get use to the chefs and what "pink' means to them. My carrots and mashed potatoes were to DIE for, definitely the best part of my meal. Overall I was pleased with my service and food. The restaurant is very pricey, but if that is what you are looking for, go for it. read more

Although we've decided to stop taking our daughter to restaurants (second time we've taken her out to eat in a month - and the second time there was a computer glitch that resulted in a delay in getting our food to the table. She's a jinx....lol), Mac's Grill was very worth the added wait. The homemade tomato bisque and French onion soups that my hubby and I started out with were marvelous, and all our meals were delicious. Because of the computer glitch, we were offered free desserts, which we took advantage of despite being very full from our meals, as the dessert menu had some favorite tasty treats.... As a result, I'm enjoying the most scrumptious peanut butter pie for breakfast as I'm writing this review. (My husband, who'd been to Mac's at a friend's recommendation and then brought other friends there, doesn't do reviews, but we seriously thought they were THAT GOOD despite a minor glitch on the evening.) A public thank you to our server, who was very up front in a difficult situation (as I've been on her end of the situation more than once - and had very nasty people that I had to approach more than once) and to Mac's Grill for a marvelous meal that was well worth every penny. read more

Really great food with awesome atmosphere. The bar has seasonal as well as a long list of micro brews from both in and out of state. The list of rubs for all the steaks is incredible and I am pretty sure that I have tried them all. I have had a love-hate relationship with this establishment for nearly 20 years. Back in the day - it was about the only choice in the Lewiston -Auburn area as there were only a handful of restaurants. Today there are plenty to choose from - nice local places like this and the usual suburban complement of chain casual. If I am not mistaken, the owners also operate Fishbones - a little more upscale offering just across the river in the Lewiston Bates Mill complex which is also a good choice. My beef (pun not intended) with them a decade ago was that they did not take reservations except for large parties) and would quote absurdly long wait times - even when there were only 5 or so parties ahead of you. You definitely got the impression that they were hoping you would leave because they didn't want their small waiting area to become overcrowded. More times than I would like to remember - leaving with my hungry and disappointed family in tow because the hostess quoted an hour or longer wait. Sometimes I would just call their bluff and we were seated well below the quoted time. Nowadays they take reservations - even can do it online (extra points for easy site navigation when I had to change the time with my online reservation). I think the greater choice of restaurants in the area has lessened the demand somewhat and they also expanded their capacity with an addition, so getting seated is thankfully no longer an issue. Now to the food. I have never had a bad steak here. Always very tender, always cooked perfectly. I am either a medium or medium rare person depending on the mood. Medium always has the right amount of pink. The medium rare just right - not raw. They have a unique assortment of rubs for your steak which you can sample before your order. I also like that you can size your steak as it is cut to order so if you are really hungry, you don't have to settle for a 6 or 8 oz. A couple of times I have ordered the ribs and steak combo. I lived in Memphis for a time and know good ribs - these were o.k. - and I am picky, but my recommendation is to stick to the steaks which are much better than o.k. My wife and daughter are not big steak eaters. Sampling my wife's salmon and daughter's pasta - non-steak eaters will not be disappointed. Full service bar has lots of beers on tap and they make a mean margarita. Now to my only current "beef" which is what other reviewers have mentioned and is a strange kind of dynamic - the noise level. You feel like you need a bullhorn to carry on a conversation across the table. Maybe it is because they are packing too many into one confined space, but I also think it is the wood paneling covering everything; not just the walls but the bar, dividers, floor; everything. The decor is a nice Southwestern theme. My wife had an interesting suggestion for the owners; cover up more of the wood by hanging more of those Southwestern rugs and tapestries to absorb the noise. That and look into noise dampening ceiling tiles or carpeting. Based on numerous visits; overall - 1 star deducted for the loudness issue, but the food quality, interesting menu, capable bar, and consistent friendly service all are 5 stars. read more

Yummy! We have been here a couple of times while visiting from out of town and the service is always great! The food is done right and the seating is nice. The only reason I didn't go 5 stars is because I feel like the staff is either put under a lot of stress or just unhappy in their positions. It's well worth the trip to this welcoming restaurant to enjoy the specialities, also, I'd say the house wines are California, a good selection. Simone and I stopped into Mac's when I got a craving for a good burger during a recent pass through Auburn Maine. I also happened to have a Portland Dine Around Club coupon for Mac's so we decided to give it a try and we were happy that we did. We arrived at about 6pm on a Sunday night. The dining room is divided into two separate areas, one with a large bar and one without. We choose the bar area as it had more televisions to watch sports on. The menu is primarily for meat lovers with all kinds of steak in various forms. There is also some chicken and fish thrown in and a few things for the veg heads. It was an all meat meal for us starting with the appetizer "Bull Chips". House made thick and crunchy potato chips are drowned in Jim Beam BBQ Sauce, Pepperjack cheese and Ground Beef and then the whole pile is topped with sour cream. The plate comes in either a small or large size and they are very good and addictive but we went with the small so we would have plenty of room for our meal and then dessert. For her entree Simone went with traditional steak tips with garlic, mushrooms and onions. The tips were very tender and well marinated. The sweetness from the garlic and onion flavor didn't overpower them but only added to the deliciousness. They were served with creamy mashed potatoes and sauteed fresh vegetables (also with garlic). I had a Mushroom and Swiss burger for my meal and added bacon, because everything is better with bacon. The burger was ground fresh and tasted great as a result. It was cooked medium as requested and was a good burger choice. Served with it was house made French Fries sprinkled with kosher salt. As with all Fresh fries, some of them were crispier then others but that fresh potato flavor cannot be beat. Dessert was a large slab of rich and fuddgy chocolate moose cake with toffee topping. It was an awesome and filling way to finish off a very good meal and we left satisfied.The star of the meal were the Bull Chips but all the food was very good. The food is good. Steak is of high quality. The prices are high, but they don't skimp on the portions. It's a noisy place, and depending where they seat you, the high wooden dividers and seating arrangement gives you a great view of the walls. The waitstaff is obviously stressed out, and it will take two or three requests before they finally remember what you asked for. This place is overall good, but when you pay this kind of money you expect to be served by people that know what they are doing, not servers who constantly apologize for their mistakes. Went there a few days ago for a party. The waitress was covering two big parties so service was slow. Had both of the parties next to each other. Food was ok. Having both parties next to each other was not fun. The other party had kids which were running around bumping into the back of our chairs and the parents were too evolved in themselves to pay attention to there kids. When we got our bills the waitress put a 20% gratuity on it even though she wasn't good. Talk about giving yourself more then you deserve. It is what it is. I mean I had a wrap and the house salid was more expensive then the warp. As far as discounts go for veterans don't ask because you won't get one till veterans day but, they have pictures up saying they support the military. Personally if you have things up saying you support the military then show it not just on one day or if you are in uniform. I wish I had read the reviews first, this use to be a favorite place to eat, but no longer. Took a friend today 4/27/2015 got a cup of chili, which use to be my favorite also but this had fat and grizzle in it buried under 1 tiny tender piece of meat most of the rest of their steak has little on no fat on it but there was a lot in my tiny little bowl. The Wrangler cut their smallest is what I ordered as the prices were up, I don't mind paying for a good steak but this was tough an on the stringy side my knife didn't want to cut it but it was cooked medium as asked, i had one bite; my friend likes rare steak however this was not correctly cooked, it had one side, that wasn't even seared and it was stringy when cut rare steak doesn't mean raw, he had fries with it and all five french fry's were nice and hot but there were only 5 of them or so, potato's are not that expensive, and there should have been more! to top it off the presentation was off really big plate for a tiny tiny steak. For this price we could have gone to Texas Roadhouse and been much happier! You Should Too! My baked potato was perfect and was the best part of my meal. When the server asked us how things were she felt bad but didn't offer to correct the rare steak that was improperly cooked and could have been corrected but she never offered. It was not seasoned properly at all, neither one of the steaks were. They CLEARLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO COOK A RARE STEAK or how to correct the problems. Mistakes do happen BUT THE NEXT TIME I WANT TO PAY HALF PRICE FOR A STEAK I TOOK ONE BITE OF I WILL GO TO MAC"S GRILL. But that won't be anytime soon! Worse burger I have ever had. I ordered a well done burger with mushrooms and cheese, it came with a side of rice, so I thought ok I will have rice with it. When the plate came, it had a steak knife buried in it, so I removed it. Bun was just taken out of a 50pcs bun bag, not grilled, just stone cold and just taken out of a bag and put on the plate. I noticed that my burger was kind of hard, and when I tried to take a bite, I felt cold charcoal in my mouth. I flipped the burger and it was completely burned on the other side. Not just a little, totally burned. The cook tried to hide it by flipping the burger on the other side so the charcoal side will not be visible. Rice was stone cold. Yuck. When our server came, before I said anything she looked at my plate and said "OMg that is too burned!!" and took the plate away for an exchange. Exchange came, same stone cold rice and a semi burned cold burger, except this time a little less. Still charcoal. I mean 2 Charcoals in a row...people, hello? My wife had a steak and it looked and tasted delicious, so obviously there is a problem in the kitchen: either a different guy is making burgers and steaks or some other problem. The recipe also sucks: you have to toast the buns, not serve them cold out of the bag. Get a couple of food heaters and put the food under them while it's waiting to go to tables so it does not become cold. Both my charcoal burgers were stone cold: even the second one, so that tells me they were prepared a half an hour ago and reheated. Why are you serving cold rice? Whats the sense in that? Who likes cold rice? Also: why in heaven would you put RAW mushrooms on a burger, put a slice of cheese on them and put it in a microwave for 30 sec so the cheese will melt? Nonsense cooking. Never again! We went for lunch this week and had one of the worst meals. Let me start with the fact that I have Celiacs and I am gluten free. I explained this to the waitress and she assured me no problem, they have a gluten free menu and they could take care of it. I ordered the tips, Medium rare with a baked potato. When the food came out, it was cold, baked potato was cold enough that the butter wouldn't even melt, and the tips were medium well if not well done. They were chew and hard and awful. The waitress was pretty busy, as our food came out she got a lot of tables, most seemed to be just drinking. When she returned we explained about the meal, the person I was dining with told her that her fries had been cold as well. They did discount the bill which I appreciated, ( would have rather had good, safe food though, but I get sometimes things happen with over cooking or sitting too long) but the explanation they gave was one that concerned me, "they must have switched your tips with another tables because they complained they were undercooked. " Well as someone with a food allergy , dining in the middle of the afternoon, with very few other tables eating, I'm glad to see they pay close attention to that food being made for someone with an allergy. A few hours later and I was sick as a dog. If you have a food allergy, or want a hot meal, this is not the place to go. read more

There are a few good restaurants in the "twin cities" of Auburn and Lewiston, and Mac's Grill would be among them. This is a very old school eating establishment that is more wood paneling Maine authentic than the more upscale-looking hipster eateries like Fish Bone or Fuel. If you like good steaks, ribs, grilled chicken and seafood, though, they do them well, with a wide choice of seasonings and sauces. The bar is a bit limited but it does well enough. Service was homey and pleasant, and reasonably quick. Presentation, always a plus in my book, was a little weak and, for the price, a little refresh of the dining room might be in order, but otherwise it's a fine place to grab a bite to eat. read more

Myself, husband and two friends visiting from out of town went to Mac's for the first time on Monday, Feb. 12 after a glowing recommendation from someone who dines there frequently. We arrived at 1pm and noted that the restaurant was cold and many guests still had their coats on. The hostess sat us at a very small table and we were unable to sit comfortably and requested to move to larger seating. This was accommodated and we were given menus and placed our orders. I will only address our meals and not our friends dinners. I got a 16 oz ribeye, cooked medium, Caesar side salad and stir fried summer squash and zucchini. Husband got an 8 oz bacon wrapped filet mignon, cooked medium, with a side salad and same vegetables. Our salads arrived and my husband had to request the dressing which was omitted in error. Server was friendly and apologized. My Caesar salad was actually a bowl of iceberg lettuce, several parmesan shavings and few croutons with dressing on the side. Not Romaine lettuce and tossed in a bowl prior to serving. Dinner arrived a short time later and although my steak was cooked appropriately enough for "medium", it was rather tough which is unusual for a ribeye. Not much marbling and it really needed a very sharp knife to cut, hence, I don't think it was a ribeye but a cheaper cut of beef. My husbands filet was cooked medium but also was much tougher and challenging to chew that any filet mignon should have been. Our stir fried summer squash was overcooked to almost mush. The prices for these dinners were $29 and $26 respectively, and did not reflect quality or care in preparation. There are much better offerings elsewhere and we do not plan to return. read more

In town looking at Bates. Yelped for a good meal locally. My son is a meat eater so looked for a grill that would serve him a steak. Mac's delivered. Fairly priced, good food and proper service. No complaints. I had the parmesaen halibut which was very good. the brussel sprouts were a great vegetable that you don't see too often.
