Great place for supper. Lunch provided you have a lot of time is always a treat. They serve bread with butter and cornbread mini muffins with jalapeño bits in them. I find the bread basket a nice touch that many places now skip. Hand cut fries, ordered well done, are crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Probably the best fries around. The fried haddock sandwich is a fresh fillet battered and fried. It is served with lettuce tomato cheese and tarter sauce on a fresh bulky roll. The coating is crispy and the fish flakey. Very nice sandwich. They offer a variety of burgers, grilled chicken, pulled pork, steaks cut to order, as well as a variety of soups and salads, pasta and creative specials. The food is always fresh, cooked to your specification and served hot. The staff and kitchen is very accommodating. Special requests like no salt or can I substitute this for that are always handled with a smile. Expect to spend a full hour for lunch. Mac's Grill in Auburn, Maine offered, hands-down, the very worst culinary experience I have ever had...from the service to the quality of the food and each attempt at remedying the evening. After prompt attention from our server, my 12-year old son and I placed our order. But after that it was all downhill. That was when our culinary nightmare began. I should have prefaced this one-star review by saying I've spent more than a little time in all facets of the food industry, from fast food to fine dining, from kitchen to bar to general manager. Which means I know what I'm talking about...that I have context. But it also means I feel for the people running a restaurant, especially during the rush. But there is no excuse for the experience I had. FOOD and SERVICE: I started with chicken vegetable soup which took forever to come out...the *soup* took forever, you ask? The stuff that is ladled into a cup? I know, right?! It was confusing to me too. When it finally arrived I discovered an awful, inedible purée of nondescript color served lukewarm. The server, who did her best to ignore us by not making eye contact (which anyone in the food industry will tell you is a mistake) made me wait a LONG time just to report the issue. I apologized but insisted upon sending it back. Then we waited again for a salad and entrees. Longer this time as if that were even possible. This should have been quick. Fish. And chips. Fry it and dump it in a basket of newspaper. Period. Fish and chips were EXCESSIVELY over-breaded and sopping with grease. The fry oil used was not hot enough to properly fry anything in, thus the food was saturated with it. Worse still, the fry oil was REALLY old and rancid. My son, mortified at what I was about to do protested, but only for a moment...he clamped his mouth shut when he saw me pinch the breading of the fish and saw it literally ooze dark brown, almost black, oil (it should be a light gold color). So I apologized and sent that back too. I know, I know...why was *I* apologizing? Perhaps because the server made me feel so uncomfortable by NOT apologizing to my son and I...and acting as if I was out of my mind. The food wasn't her fault. The service was. After already having had several issues with the food, I contacted the person at the host stand...the owner, I was told. I explained (embarrassed) I was really unsatisfied (understatement) with the food thus far and asked him what was good. I also asked if they'd been having issues with their fryer (gift-wrapped advice in the form of a question since under-temp fry oil is an easy fix if the equipment is in working order) and told him that the oil being used was very old. I'm not sure he knew or cared what I was talking about. I asked for a personal recommendation, but after he sweepingly concluded that "everything [was] good...apparently except for the fish and chips [ha, ha]," I decided we were perhaps expecting too much of this sports-oriented restaurant and bar. So ("when in Rome") I decided on a safe bet. My son and I both ordered burgers. And though we were absolutely starving I can tell you the burgers too were awful. The low-quality meat patties tasted like they had cooked and congealed in their own fat. Forget that they were absolutely overdone. CONCLUSION: We could not stomach anything except the side salads that came with our "meals." The service was awful and the management has much to learn about customer service and what constitutes quality. The folks in the kitchen? Don't get me started. In addition, the place smelled bad...the kind of stale-beer, restaurant-smell that almost without exception gets masked when business gets booming. Except that it WAS booming at 8:00 p.m. And I would bet money that the restaurant was as dirty as it smelled. "Bar Rescue," anyone? "So why is it so busy?" you ask. No idea. Perhaps because people in Maine tend to be loyal to locally owned businesses. And the full parking lot, glossy pine board decor and flatscreen TVs invite you in for a good, lively, casual dining experience. But it was just terrible. I don't say this lightly and I take no joy in publishing a scathing review. But the review is fair and objective. Now, the manager did credit my bill for the soup and the fish and chips. I suppose I could have told them about the burgers too. But at that point they may have offered us something else and I did not want to take another bite of the food there. Neither did my 12-year old son. We had both lost our appetites. That and we had already been there an-hour-and-a-half. Very disappointing waste of money. Entirely. Unless the owner assures me that there have been some major changes we will not be back. And even then it would take some serious convincing. The Mini-Mac I ordered was medium rare on the outside and rare on the inside (I ordered it medium). The vegetables were saturated in garlic and butter. The ambiance is dark and dingy. I felt dirty inside the restaurant and I didn't feel as though anything I touched had been properly sanitized. The food is over priced and the environment is not clean. First time trying Mac's and it was not a good first impression especially for the price. We went with another couple and we both ordered their Smallest steak, a 10 ounce Sirloin, medium well. A larger steak should be a plate filler, not a ball of steak like when you're rolling your hamburgers at home before flattening into a patty. Since it was so thick and round, it was cold and bleeding on the inside. Once you have to send a steak back, your meal is ruined. Your friends are done with half their meal before you get to start eating yours and your sides (baked potato, veges) are sitting on your table getting cold. Despite reading that you should call for reservations, we decided to just stop by on our way to the casino. It was only 4:30 so I was really surprised by how packed the parking lot was (which was poorly taken care of, very icy and hard to walk on) We got in with no wait for a high top but even those were mostly reserved. I ordered the fish sandwich with fries. The fries were very good- crispy but still soft on the inside. My sandwich was just meh.. It was nearly flavorless which I'm not sure how is possible with a fried filet, cheese, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. My boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich and he thought it was pretty good. The other person dining with us got a burger and she also said it was just totally lacking in flavor but did like her Caesar salad. They were breaded in a thick, greasy flour that is similar to what one finds on chicken tenders at a Chinese restaurant. I was just looking for standard onion rings, but got this greasy mess that didn't sit too well with my stomach instead. Service was okay, could have been a little more friendly. Food - Just Ok. I ordered their 8 oz. sirloin with Carolina BBQ, sweet potato, veggies, and salad. The ginger honey mustard was delicious and the jalapeno corn muffin that came with the salad was a refreshing change from the standard bread options. My steak was just okay ... not a whole lot of flavor and didn't have a real good sear on it. The sweet potato fries looked like they were frozen and not fresh (tasted like it too). The only thing that saved them was the cinnamon dip. The veggies were soggy and didn't taste very fresh. Price - Reasonable. In the search for a good steak joint near our new place in Poland, Mac's Grill came up as the go to spot. Seeing as I live in Los Angeles, a 45 minute wait for a table on a Friday night is not unusual, or even objectionable, but it was nonetheless a little surprising given Auburn Maine in October is about as far removed from busy Los Angeles as it gets. Still, the bustle of the restaurant and obvious "local" vibe were tip offs to my Dad and I that we were likely in for a treat and like I said, we were after a good steak after a couple hard days of raking leaves at the lake so wait we did. So, once seated, we chose the onion ring appetizer and for our entree, we each chose the 16 oz specialty "cowboy cut" sirloins, which was essentially the size of a jumbo baseball cut filet but in a high grade Angus sirloin. It is their go to steak according to the menu. We added Salads, and the usual sides. Now let me preface the rest of this review by saying that I've eaten at a lot of the big steakhouse chains, Capital Grille, Mortons, Ruths Chris, Flemings, Smith and Wollensky, plus some of the best little small chain or independent places, Gibbet Hill in Groton, MA, Abe and Louie's in Boston, David Burke's Prime House in Chicago, Club A Steakhouse in Manhattan, yadda yadda, you get the idea, I like steak, I'd like to think I am qualified to make a proper judgment. I can't say I have ever had a better cut of sirloin anywhere in the world, honestly I was blown away. Just expertly prepared as ordered, very flavorful, gigantic, nothing not to love here, it's making my mouth water at 10 in the morning just writing this. The steak was so good, and so big, that even as big dudes and hungry from working in the yard all day, we each had enough of a chunk left over to make a spectacular steak sandwich the next day for lunch. They had maybe the best onion rings we ever had as well. The salad was fresh, and I had to ask for a second order of the baguette bread, it was excellent. Was tempted to go 4 stars because perfection is frankly so hard to achieve, but really for this area of the country, this has got to be as "good as it gets" so bonus star for being a great steakhouse in a pretty remote area. I was beyond impressed and will look forward to returning here on a regular basis when I am in town. Superb meal, and excellent value as well, we easily would have spent twice to three times as much for a meal at one of the larger well known chains and it would not have been any better. I just bought a house in Auburn after living in Portland for 20years. I was worried I would not find "our spot" like we have in Portland. My new neighbors own Mac's so we brought our friends from out of town last night. I called at 9pm and Nancy said please come it is not too late....so, sweet and welcoming. The inside is all wood and the decor is perfect!! The bar is awesome!! They have kickass beer on tap (Lawson's Sip of Sunshine and Foundation Afterglow to name a few). The food was excellent!!! I was up visiting relatives in Maine and found this restaurant on Opentable.com. It had good reviews so I went ahead and made an online reservation. Turned out to be a great choice. We went on the Wednesday night and it turned out that I did not really need to make a reservation. The three of us were seated right away. We all enjoyed our meals. I had the buffalo burger, my brother had the steak fajitas (which he said were some of the best that he ever had) and my grandmother had the fish sandwich. Fries were also very good. I hear that the steaks are supposed to be really good as well. Our waitress was friendly & attentive, but not overbearing. She came over at least 3-4 times to refill our waters. To the General Manager of Mac's Grill Nancy Berbue I title this the worst meal I never ate! I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant that I suggested to my family. 9 of us went to dine at Mac's Gill located on 1052 Minot Ave, Auburn, ME 04210, on Saturday Sept. 15th 2018 for dinner. Our waitress was excellent but the dining experience was less than satisfactory! We started with appetizers and salads, In the salad was the core of the lettuce, the bottom part that usually gets cut off and thrown away, then when the meals were served to all of us, in another meal at our table was the bottom core of the broccoli, again the part that is usually cut off and thrown away! My steak was ordered medium and was served well done, so I sent it back in hopes that I would receive an new steak cooked the way I ordered it. As I watched my family eat, thirty minutes later the other 8 people at the table had finished their meals and were asking for left over boxes, I still hadn't received my meal. It wasn't until I paid the bill, that I received my meal to take with me, so I can reheat it and eat it alone at home.. After all that, the restaurant's means to compensate me is to take my meal off the bill. Just the steak meal that I never got to eat... If I wanted a take out I would have ordered it to go.... Maybe my one complaint or review doesn't mean much to a restaurant that has a large volume of people during the weekend, but when your dining out with family that I haven't seen in 4 years and your combined bill for the table over four or five hundred dollars, between drinks appetizers and the meal, And I would think that after ruining my evening with my family, Macs Grill would care a little more about the quality of what they are serving and the people who dine at their restaurant verses how many people they can feed and exit the restaurant in an evening. I don't believe that I have ever heard a waitress apologize so much in one evening for what was the clearly the restaurant's mistakes and not hers. It is Now March 2019 and all I ever received from the restaurant was an apology phone call saying, we are sorry for your bad experience but please come back and give us another try. My husband and I ate here last night for his birthday dinner. Our server was new, it was her first night, and she did a fantastic job! (I think her name was Alex) It was also our first night out alone in 6 months since our daughter was born so we wanted to take our time, and our server was very accommodating, we didn't feel rushed at all. The bull chips are yummy, coconut shrimp was amazing, as was the jalapeño cornbread. Steaks were cooked perfectly, I had the small sirloin and hubby had the ribeye, both delicious. The steaks come with soup or salad, potato and veggie, tons of food! We took a slice of cheesecake to go and it was ok, it was only thing we had that I wouldn't order again.
