We come down to Wellfleet every summer, and for some reason, we end up here once every vacation. This is the last time! This year, I managed to avoid eating dinner here. . . the lines are long, the prices aren't great, and then you have to snag a table while everyone else is trying. Ugh. It's not relaxing. We also usually go at dusk, when you're eating in the dark (unless you use your cell phone for light) and being eaten alive by bugs. So, anyway, we like to fish on the pier, so I thought we could get the kids ice cream here. . . only because PJs was closed. Ugh again, because same story -- super-long line, everything is expensive (small = $4.50) and the portions are VERY small. And, they whip it together so fast, it's not quality, so my son got an ice cream and the scoop literally rolled off the cone because there wasn't anything in the cone. I've been coming here for the last 15 years and it's always been my favorite lobster roll on the cape - I'd literally recommend it to everyone. However, I went back this year and was incredibly disappointed. I spent nearly $50 on one lobster roll and one cup of clam chowder. The hot lobster roll used to come with a toasted bun and lemon, this year I got a bun straight out the bag with incredibly small bits of lobster (usually I'd get large chunks - an inch in length compared to this year's quarter inch). The clam chowder was also incredibly watery - far from prior year's standards. I checked back with the staff and they said it was a new cook this year (which makes little sense) and they offered me a kale soup in exchange. Overall, there is far, far better value and quality options located within a 1 mile radius. read more

But I am compelled after the hour wait we had last night for take-out that should be 15 minutes no matter how long the line. I am not really sure what good the number system at Mac's is when orders come out randomly, it seems: "Number 31. Number 56. Number 40." We waited and waited and waited for food that was lukewarm, and key components of the meals missing. (Shouldn't fish tacos have more than little bits of fish or, in one case, none at all?) Do NOT recommend the tuna wrap. 2 slivers of well done tuna and lots and lots and lots of lettuce (Macs you should be ashamed) nor can I recommend the salmon dinner unless you like a squirt of hotdog mustard as the mustard glaze. Terrible. That said, I can recommend the tuna poke bowl. read more

Very slow service and impersonal service - only helpful with questions and the lobster role was ok at best with a lower end portion and no larger pieces. We loved this place so much we had lunch here twice over the weekend! Our crew needed our lobster fix, so we loaded up on Lobster BLTs, Lobster Bombs, and Lobster Bisque (among other selections). The Lobster BLT was amazing! Fresh ingredients top with plenty of lobster. The lobster bisque was a group favorite as well. Of course, lobster is not inexpensive... but Mac's is quick and delicious. Very generous portions! I had a party of four, and we each ordered a seafood dinner plate, which includes tour seafood of choice, rice, and cooked vegetables (squash, zucchini, carrot). The sautéed veggies and rice are a bit salty for my taste, but the seafood is very fresh. Clam chowder was good, and it took around 15 minutes after I called for them to get the order ready. They also have very good ice cream right next to the restaurant, so you can grab dinner and dessert at once! During non-COVID times, it's very nice to eat on the benches and look at the ocean (it gets cold at night so bring a layer if you think you might need it). They still allow outdoor seating right now but I didn't do it out of caution. read more

I've REALLY ENJOYED this spot over the past few weeks in Wellfleet. Call-ahead is very easy, and the staff who've taken the orders have been incredibly kind and accommodating. Food is reasonably priced and delicious. The fried scallops have been the best we've had out here on this trip, and our kids really loved their meals (quesadillas and chicken fingers). Fish taco was good, the Caribbean seafood bowl was great. While outdoor seating isn't amazing, our kids enjoyed bc they could run around on the beach and check out the boats coming in and out of the harbor. A winner! read more

"Mac" owns two places in Wellfleet. Surprisingly, the "shack" is not the place on the pier that sells oysters and hot dogs out of a small window. That's Mac's Market. Mac's Shack, by comparison, is a fine dining establishment walking distance from the pier. We went on a Monday night in June and it was bustling. Our poor waiter had to rattle off an uncomfortably long list of specials. First of all, it's uncomfortable to listen to a person have to list so many things, and second of all, there's no way you can remember everything in that long of a list. The average human's memory just can't handle that many specials. That said, dinner, which we ordered from the menu, was great. We started with raw Wellfleet oysters (of course), and tuna tartare. You can't go wrong on either. Then I had a broiled bluefish dish, and she had the coconut-crusted sea scallops. Both were good, but I think the bluefish was especially well-prepared. It was nice finding something so upscale in a little harbor town. Wellfleet has this weird art gallery edge to it, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised. read more

A fried fresh fish burrito was stuffed and tasty with good proportions. It's a bonus that the rice is flavored (Spanish rice) instead of plain. The rice also absorbed most of the salsa drips (too many burritos don't and make a mess). Get add-ons if you want spicy; the default is pretty plain. read more

Lovely setting on a beautiful September Saturday. Our family split our orders and ordered one after the other, 4 on the first order and 2 on ours. Their food (lobster rolls and something else) was ready first, and they were halfway done before our Lobster Paninis, so that was odd. The food is good. Nothing to really brag about. A little pricey for a family of five, Just under $100 for mostly fried foods. What bothers me about dining out is the standard boring options on the kids menu. I get it. Most kids aren't adventurous eaters but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be kid options for things 'outside the box'. So it bothers me when my kids want to try fried clams or fried oysters and there isn't a kid option. Anyway, just ranting. As I said the food is good. This place really out to be ashamed of itself. It's really basically a tourist trap. The food is not very good at all for the price. I ordered a 6oz lobster roll and fried whole belly clams small order. The lobster roll had WAY TO MUCH LETTUCE AND CELERY. Now I'm of the school that believe lettuce doesn't even belong in a lobster roll. But this place filled the bun with shredded lettuce and the lobster wad heavy on the the Mayo and celery. Not what ai think of as a good lobster roll in the Cape. The fried whole belly's were also over done. They were ok but that this price point I expect you to took my food correct. Don't even remember what I paid. I don't count money on a vacation but it prob wasn't cheap. And I've had much better lobster rolls and fried whole belly's in the Cape. read more
