Nice seating area then things went downhill from there. We waited for an hour for our food. When we asked about it, we were told it's broiled fish and "we should have known it would take that long". No we weren't told when we ordered it. We asked for the other items first. It was still 30 mins before we got the other items. When they gave us the raw oysters and littlenecks, they were sitting (half submerged) in a puddle of melted ice water on the plate. The lobster Mac and cheese was yummy. We had a "large" order of fried shrimp for $19.99 that was not generous. The shrimp did taste fresh. A large order of onion rings for $7.49 was also quite small, and didn't hold a candle to Arnold's in Eastham who makes better onion rings with a far bigger portion. Clam chowder was thin and not hot. This place is a total rip off. They charge over $30 for a lobster roll and it's served on a tiny bun with maybe 2 scoops of lobster salad that doesn't even taste fresh. No French fries or anything served with it. They should be ashamed of themselves. I won't be back. read more

Had an excellent lunch at Mac's on the Pier in Wellfleet on Cape Cod today. Got there just before noon on a Saturday, June 8..Only one ahead of waiting to order at the window. When we left, there was a long line. It was a beautiful day to sit at the picnic tables under umbrellas with a great view of the harbor. I ordered soft shell steamers. They were delish! Only complaint would be that they were a little sandy. I was provided with broth to rinse them in but plunging them from a broth bath into clarified-butter weakens the butter. Hubby's oyster po boy was really good! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Will make this a regular order! read more

Great service, the man at the counter had plenty of recommendations and was very kind. The food was unfortunately meh and expensive. I got the grilled scallop dinner, and the scallops were incredible! Perfectly cooked with a great basil sauce. But, the steamed vegetables were completely unseasoned and bland, and the rice was also bland and a bit undercooked. The clam chowder was pretty flavorless and watery. The fish stew didn't have a single piece of seafood in it that I could find, only potatoes and tomatoes, but the broth was really flavorful. The lobster bisque tasted more like tomato bisque and there wasn't a single visible chunk of lobster in it. For $9 it was a waste, the others $7 each, we didn't eat any of those soups. I went back and said we didn't like the soups, but we did like the fish stew if there was more fish in it. The lady was understanding and took the soups back and gave my a quart of the fish stew in replacement. There was definitely more fish in it this time! Fried oyster po boy was alright, a bit mushy, but the sauce was incredible on it and the bread was tasty. Its a walk up window and they are fast and there is nice shaded picnic tables in the sand to eat at if you stay. I didn't try their ice cream. read more

There are 2 different places here - one right on the pier in Wellfleet Harbor, and the other a short walk prior to that, surrounded by galleries. I haven't been to the one that isn't right on the pier. I love this place and have come here nearly every time in Wellfleet for the last 8 years. You need to know what choices on the menu to stick to if you're going to get it right at Mac's. The fried shrimp are big tiger shrimp that are plump and juicy, and the fried clam strips are perfect. I usually hate tartar sauce, but love what they use, and it goes perfectly with either. The plates all come with fries and slaw so its definitely enough food. The big advantage to Mac's is that it is right on the water, with 7-8 picnic tables that look onto the beach and harbor. The perfect place to grab some food, and then walk it off along the great beach. They also own a couple of chains of fresh seafood markets, with the best scallops, littlenecks, and lobsters that I saw(and had) in any of the stores or markets in the Wellfleet/Truro/Eastham area. read more

Dear Mac's, I had such high hopes for you. Here I thought you and I were going somewhere. My friends raved about you, your very own oyster beds, your location, you seemed like the perfect package. I thought it would be the perfect blind date. I'll give you the latter, you definitely don't skimp on the location. But really, don't we have you or mother nature to thank for that? I mean, the huge picnic tables on the sand over looking the bay, it's beautiful, don't get me wrong. Postcard beautiful. But looks, as they say, can only get you so far. I agreed to see you for your oysters. They were warm, shucked horribly (my mouth was practically bleeding) and came with juice-less lemons and pretty shoddy cocktail sauce. Very, very disappointing. The fried foods were better, but then again, it's hard to ruin fried food. Your dessert tasted like something out of a baskin robbins horror flick. Your lemonade was 80% sugar. I went here Saturday with my boyfriend. We both are Cape Cod aficionados and have certainly been around long enough to know what good seafood is and should be. Let's start with the good. The oysters on the half shell were great. Fresh, clean, perfect. While not cheap (6 for $11) they are absolutely worth it since they are pulled from the local water. The view is fantastic, seating was great for us since we didn't have to share a table with anyone, and there wasn't a ton of a kids running around like banshees. Now the bad. The clam chowder is so thin you'd think you were drinking water. I've never had such weak chowder. Add to that the fact that I had maybe 3 chopped clams in it and believe me I will never order that again. My boyfriend was so abhorred by the thinness of the chowder that he refused to even try it. His bisque was similar. Very thin but the flavor was decent. Not an overwhelming amount of lobster but enough to remind you what you were eating. We also had an order of the steamers. I'm ok with a few grains of sand here or there but when I have to spit out my steamer because it's encased in sand, even after dipping it in water to rinse it, I'm a little grossed out. I don't know if there is a worse feeling than sand between your teeth. I really wanted to love Macs on the pier since we usually order lobsters for family dinners out of their market. But the pier left, literally, a bad taste in my mouth. Certainly not worth the $40 we spent. read more

I wish I would have read the reviews before choosing Mac's on the Pier as the place for our family to try lobster rolls for the first time while visiting the cape. We paid $27x3 for three of the tiniest sandwiches I've ever seen whose meat was rubbery with shredded lettuce that tasted like it was on its way to being bad. I understand market price for lobster is outrageous right now but you need to make it taste good in order to make the cost worth it. Large fries were pretty small as were our order of onion rings (about half of them were so thin the batter crumbled and fell off). I'm not sure what consistency lobster bisque is supposed to be but ours was thin and watery, not thick like I pictured bisque. The lobster in that was good with the exception of one piece which nearly made me vomit as it tasted rancid. There were no napkins at the condiment stand and no lids for ketchup cups. Def will be asking locals about where to go to get a lobster roll next time and it will not be Mac's. read more

Let me start by saying this, I am a local and have been coming here for at least 20 years. Yesterday, I took my mom to lunch... We ordered the fish tacos and a large onion ring and two root beers. Total was $44. I do not mind paying for an excellent lunch, but what we got was anything but. There was one tiny piece of fish in each TINY taco, which was overwhelmingly smothered in salsa and pickled something or other. They were absolutely not edible. Then, we thought we could just save the meal by gorging on onion rings, mmmm, No! The better was like a thick bread crumb fried in weeks old oil. We threw out the meal and we're just left with the Root Beer ( which was AMAZING BTW) the only good thing to come of this whole debacle, is that my skinny jeans fit a little better that evening! We showed up around 9 on a monday night and were seated right away. The appetizers we ordered were underwhelming. A salad featured zucchini blossoms stuffed with ricotta, and figs, and that seemed exciting, but it was on a bed of watercress, which is just not really a salad green. It felt like eating weeds that grow in your driveway. The "calamari crostini" was also bizarre - there were just a few loops of calamari in a dish with a lot of bread. But the entrees were very good, especially the halibut and the striped bass. I really appreciate that Mac's kept the old Lobster Hut decor on the exterior of this century-old building - a fisherman perched in a boat affixed to the roof, pulling up a net with a giant lobster. First "meal" on the cape for us. We stopped by for oysters and clam chowder. This is an informal place with picnic tables for you to eat the food you get from a take out window. We ordered Oysters and clam chowder. The oysters were pretty decent, the but chowder was bad. Runny and weak, I'm shocked they get away with serving that in this area. On the plus side, it is BYOB so you can bring your own beer/wine/champagne to enjoy with your beverages. Mac's on the pier is the perfect location to enjoy a seafood meal and watch the sunset. We ofered from the take out window, brought our own wine and soaked in the views of the Wellfleet harbor. Doesn't get any better than that. Our menu: Wellfleet oysters half shell, fried clams, steamers, chowder and seaweed salads. Everything was gluten free. I love love the quality of the fried food but why oh why oh why can you not manage to get all the parts in a take out order ever. 3 Times this week and 1) no clam chowder 2) no drinks 3) no drawn butter for the lobster, and that is after going back in to check they packed it. Yes it is in with the lobster. Well I wasn't undoing the bag to check. Stupid boy to trust them. So $50 of lobster with no drawn butter tonight prompted this review. This is one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. I would recommend going somewhere else because it's a total rip off. We ordered the fish stew (which had exactly 1 piece of fish), the lobster mac n cheese (which was burnt on top), and the fish tacos (which were just OK, but 2 tacos for $15). UPDATE: After the response from Mac's, I want to amend this review to say thank you for recognizing the problem and offering us some compensation for the aggravation caused by the poor service we received. Also, I should add that once we received the correct order, the food was very good. I will give the pier another chance and hope that management has spoken to the staff regarding how to deal with mistakes in orders in a more appropriate way. Because the food was good, I've raised my rating from one star to three. We are long time customers of all of Mac's restaurants---the Shack, Provincetown, and the pier. But tonight we were appalled by the service we received at the pier. We ordered by telephone---two tuna wraps, fries, and coleslaw. We went down to pick it up, brought it home (ten minutes each way), and then discovered we'd been given the wrong wraps. We called and were told to bring them back and they would give us the right items. We drove back down only to find that our order wasn't ready. We had to wait another fifteen minutes for our replacement order. No one offered an apology (other than "we're very busy") or to compensate us for their mistake and our aggravation except for an extra order of coleslaw. Any decent establishment would have apologized and offered a free meal. We are extremely disappointed in the service we received. Mac needs to oversee this place and train his employees like he does at the Shack and in Provincetown. We will NEVER go back to the pier again. PJs and Moby Dicks offer far better service. read more

Extremely disappointing. Portion sizes are very small. The tacos included two small tacos, barely filled. The tofu burrito was so bland it was unfinished after two bites. The steamed mussels were extremely sandy and there was a small bug inside one. No tartar sauce included with any fried food plates. The employees were extremely kind though. Really nice location on the water. Staff had a difficult time placing the order, but that's OK. They charge $.75 for hot sauce on a burrito (I'm sorry, but hot sauce should never have a charge for burritos/tacos). I got the burrito and tasted no hot sauce as they probably barely dripped it on. Burrito was decent, but rice heavy and a bit dry (lacking in sauce). Good overall, but not mind blowing. Wifi here but they won't share the password so you can't really do work here on a slow day. Only ordered Ice cream! We came down to this pier to buy ocean/fresh-water beach stickers and ran over here while waiting. Just for a few cups of ice cream we ACTUALLY waited in line for about 20 whole minutes. Once we did get it it was amazing, but not worth the price by any means. My cousin is working here for the summer so we went to tip her well. Plenty busy as most seafood places are on the Cape in the summer. Stood in line waiting to put our food from the window, and just enjoyed the atmosphere. It should be noted that this is a working pier and Macs gets much of it's seafood locally from partnerships with these fishermen. Food was average at best only ordered onion rings and a seared tofu burrito, I know we were at a seafood place, but oh well. Onion rings were labeled as homemade but seemed frozen and the burrito had no flavor. We certainly enjoyed the atmosphere sitting at the picnic tables and watching the boats bring their catch in. Won't be rushing back anytime soon. Too many other options on the Cape for a fresh catch. read more

I had heard a lot about this place from locals, so I decided to check it out. Biggest tip I can give here. Order your lobster from the market, have them steam it and it it right there. I did that and it saves you sooo much money, and it's the same lobster! I have to say that the location alone is worth it. Right on Welfleet Bay and outdoors by the shore, exactly what you want when you think of Cape Cod beach dining. The seafood market attached to the restaurant has the best quality and prices that I found on my entire trip. Unfortunately the food product was underwhelming. Chowder was a huge disappointment. "Award Winning"? I'd like to meet the judges as it was way to soupy and bland. The tuna wrap was okay, not great as well. Also, the staff was pretty cold. Just not much personality. And the prices at the restaurant, not the market, were over the top. Too much! All that being said, I would go back, just for the location! Just avoid the chowder. read more

It's all good here! Order at the window, BYOB, park yourself at a picnic table in the sand and enjoy the gorgeous seaside view. Prices were very reasonable too. Food choices were plentiful and everything we ordered was fresh and well done - typical shack food, plus grilled entrees, sandwiches, lots of sides including steamed veg's, and some surprises - maki, some mexican. The best part of all - food prep was, such a surprise, on the light side. The onion rings were somehow grease free, and the lobster roll not griddled in some nasty mystery fat but toasted.
