Mobile ordering is from the table and food brought directly. Water, more utensils, to-go boxes and extra plates can be retrieved from a service station. And no sense of having to eat and rush out. Kimchee fried rice was excellent - having eaten this at many places this one is standout for its flavor and textures. Breakfast sandwich was special with the croissant bun. The sandwich is somehow so soft, yet not soggy. Gochuchang cookie was very good balance of flavor considering its namesake ingredient. It's perfect texture of soft and chewy. I'd suggest taking one (or 2!) home to enjoy later. Sausage pastry was my least favorite of the items I ordered, but savory pastry is just not my preference.

Great care must be taken when crafting a delicious sandwich. Attention should be paid to the distribution of ingredients across the bread. Whoever put this sandwich together, slapped a little aïoli on willly nilly, piled all of the meat and cheese in a stack and threw on a few Cornishons that had been cut in half. The result was that the edges of the sandwich were nothing but dry bread and all of the flavor was in a few bites in the middle. Plus, the unwieldy chunks of cornichon kept escaping. Clearly whoever made this sandwich never heard the phrase 'crust to crust is a must'. The other thing that bothered me was they have examples of each menu item on the counter and the sandwich that I received was much smaller than the example. The café itself is minimally, decorated and clean. Definitely a decent place to grab a coffee and quick bite if you're waiting for somebody at UCSF. But if you're fussy about your sandwiches (like I clearly am), you might want to be specific with your expectations when ordering.

But I've since bought stuff here to use their bathroom (multiple times) in a pinch, have luxuriated in their stellar calming atmosphere, enjoyed baked delights even though I paid too much for them, and (last time) received a handwritten Where's George? bill in change that sadly wasn't a match likely because the amateur Georger entered it as a Series of 2017 bill instead of a Series of 2017A. You might also remember that I two-starred the original The Plant location in the Marina long before it closed, and I more recently three-starred the location in SFO's Terminal 2, although The Plant's website makes no mention of any of its physical locations, strangely. (They do helpfully explain that it costs about $500,000 to franchise your own location.) Here's what to expect. It will be quieter than you expect when you enter. Perhaps there will be no one at the counter, but that just gives you more time to peruse the baked goods and sweets in the case. When someone does come to take your order, it will be a very nice gentleman--or at least, that's whom I've always gotten. Everything is overpriced, although it's not quite as overpriced as some other places, which should make you very angry, because it's really overpriced. But move beyond that. The baked goods and sweets are pretty good. Not worth the sticker shock, but still good. The brownies are the one exception. They're not sweet enough for how large they are. If they were smaller, they'd be fine, but eating an entire dense brownie without the sweetness makes it feel like you're chewing your way through a piece of flotsam you found in a bog. The food is very good. I've enjoyed both salads I had here. The ambiance is a super sneaky six stars or so. There are different tables and chairs at different heights. There's at least one coffee table, and I could see getting some serious work done here, although the need continually to buy (expensive) stuff to laptop-camp might make that nigh impossible. I've definitely read a few chapters in a comfy chair and have never felt rushed out. They keep their two single-user bathrooms super clean, and there's a separate handwashing area that has simultaneous views of the lovely wine shop/caterer next door and the little courtyard outside. It's located on the ground floor of the American Industrial Center's North Building. Both buildings comprised a cannery long ago. They now contain all kinds of businesses, from cafes to cheese shops to bike shops to bakeries to industrial designers. The North Building at least has lots of kooky details, especially in its entrances and exits, stairwells, hallways, and windows. Explore it!
