We stopped in at lunch on Wednesday and there were quite a few tables with patrons there. We looked around the dining room and found a small book shelf in on corner and a few folks working on their laptops. There was a small fridge with an assortment of drinks from cute little juices to sparkling waters. Also-- the huge hand painted beautify colored menu was so eye catching and inviting. We decided this was the place to try. The menu is huge consisting of "brunch" and a wine menu. How can you go wrong? We didn't order wine but went with brunch. We were greeted warmly as we hmmm and haaaaaddd about what to order -- but no pressure was applied. It was refreshing. My crepes came out within 8 minutes and they (two of them) tender, savory, and huge! The hash was homemade and delish as well. We now understood how folks could order from the menu all day (there are snack items, such as danish and sandwiches) and just sit here all day. I've been coming here for years. Loved the original owners they had a flair for flavor. The people after the originals were missing something. The current owners have found the secret in my opinion. In addition to the original vast menu they have added a deep fat fryer so they have French fries now. My go to breakfast is Fries, two over medium eggs on top and four slices of bacon NOT crispy. And a coffee occasionally. ( I always say a large order of fries just to be sure to be sure ). It's a winner breakfast in my opinion. They still have the vast bagel, crepe, wrap, selections plus the new ads from a deep fryer. I highly recommend this place for breakfast or lunch. I've never tried dinner here .... Yet. read more

I went to pick up my lunch at the place today. Usually I don't have a problem but today it was different. Make sure you check your receipt! I asked for the western burger add bacon, which was listed at $2.50. You'd think that you are getting a portion of bacon, at least two strips, right? Nope, because when I looked at my printed receipt they charged me $5.00. When I asked the guy at the counter about this, he says "those are old prices and it's $2.50 per strip of bacon". What? had I known that they were gonna play the bullshit game, I would have went somewhere else. So let me get this straight my boy...you are charging me $5 for 2 strips of bacon?!?!? How about you update your prices! WTF is this 2021? I've heard of Bidenflation but these dudes must have a hog pen in the back and carve their own meat because this is ridiculous! Then, when I get back to the office, the 2 strips of bacon that I paid for was really one folded in half and a piece of another one. What is going on here? Another thing, I asked for my meat medium well, that shit was hella well done and the egg was overcooked, as in not runny. They over charged my co-worker for his protein drink by a dollar. We came here for an early breakfast about 9am on a Saturday,drawn by the outdoor seating for our dog. I got the eggs Benedict with breakfast potatoes, which were super yum. My partner got the breakfast combo with eggs, a pancake stack with bananas, and bacon. The pancakes were good but could be fluffier - would go back and ask for chocolate chip next time. I really liked that it felt very neighborly- lots of families with kids in the morning, plenty of seating inside with a few tables outside. I stopped in spontaneously for a coffee and snack; discovered that it is a real restaurant rather than a simple coffee shop. Good people watching by the window. Okay, tried a crepe. The americano was just fine, but the crepe too thick, the feta clumped in sections and overpowering, the vegetable filling and country potatoes too greasy, and too much dressing on the salad. I ate ~20%. The serving is big, and it might be just fine for someone really hungry. Didn't work for me. read more

I was in the area in the early morning and finding this café was a pleasant surprise. It kind of reminds me of a crêpe vine style Cafés. I had some of their delicious coffee, but unfortunately no one came by to refill it, and I had their breakfast in a pita. The pita was perfectly warm and it tasted real good. The presentation was a little bland though. I don't know, maybe some fruit, hash browns or brighter plate would help. Luckily got there earlier enough, and there was only one other person at a table. Great neighborhood spot! The menu has a wide variety of choices bound to please any palate. Good food and friendly service, but the prices are a bit steep. There was a bit of a line when ordering, but I was only just able to decide what to get by the time I got to the front of the line. The guy who took my order was super nice and even did me a favor exchanging my change, but another guy who was bringing food out to everyone was not wearing his mask over his nose and mouth. Luckily I managed to snag an outdoor table so we only had to interact with him in close quarters outside. Still nice people though. The freshly squeezed orange juice ($6.50) was definitely a highlight. Many places claim to be freshly squeezed, but this one actually tasted like it! I also got the BLT with avocado and egg on sourdough (about $16 after add-ons), which I didn't find explicitly offered on the menu but is the top picture on Yelp. I was pleasantly surprised how much bacon they included in the sandwich, as the crispy strips were falling out of my sandwich. Seemed like big portions, but somehow I still ended up being hungry before the next meal (but maybe this says more about me than them!). My husband also got the combo crepe ($12), which includes nutella, strawberries, and bananas. It seemed like a better deal than the nutella crepe or banana crepe ($10.25). The crepe was not exceptionally large, and my husband was about to lick the plate. (He decided to just slowly but methodically scrape off all the remnants off the plate with his knife instead.) read more

First visit here with my fiancé. Space is perfect and very clean. Dog friendly since folks were out front with their pets in the cozy table out front. I ordered the eggs Benedict and my honey had the cheese omelette. Potatoes came with the order and lemonade/ginger beverage made on site. They have a fridge to grab some bottle of Oj and other drink options. Greeted right away by friendly staff and the food came quickly. VERY tasty and reasonably priced for the serving. A crowd came in after we sat and the staff was QUICK to make changes to accommodate the group Of 7. Very attentive staff and very comfortable chairs with a sweet ambiance. Staff welcomed the regulars and knew the menu for the new customers. Definately will be back to give the pancakes a try. read more

Stopped by Moonlight Cafe on a whim, where the world of great restaurants' on Cortland, is everyone's oyster. The joint was nearly full with luncheners (is that really a word?). The man (owner?) at the counter taking orders and collecting $$$, was nice and welcoming, not in an artificial scripted way, but in a genuine way that acknowledges Moonlight Cafe's place in the Bernal neighborhood. As we ate I'd hear him great customers by their first name, with a spark of enthusiasm made people feel welcome. The food was good. The Blue Burger had an ample dose of the 'house made' blue cheese concoction and was properly prepared. The Philly Steak sandwich with grilled onions & bell peppers but not as prescribed. While the Philly Steak sandwich had beef and the requisite cheese / onions / bell peppers it was astray from the 'steak', the beef seemed like slices of a roast. 3 and a half Stars just because the fresh squeezed orange juice was that good in fact fresh-squeezed orange juice was five stars but since I ordered other items that work 5 stars it brought the start countdown. I ordered their gyro sandwich and found the euro to be dry and the bread to be hard, I really would have liked more gyro meat too instead of the four small slices inside for $10. For $10 that gyro should have came with some small side and not just a small gyro with hardly any gyro meat and a hard pita bread. I had some of my friends pancakes, again average but my friend said the omelet was good but I didn't try the omelette. Well, I don't know if Bowie ever patronized Moonlight Cafe, but if he did, he probably couldn't have swayed under the moonlight anyway since it closes at 6PM most of the week. Moonlight is possible on Friday and Saturday evenings when they stay open until 9PM. Anyway I was there in the middle of a balmy Thursday afternoon after climbing up Cortland from Bayshore Blvd. It was frankly the only place in the 'hood where I had a chance at a salad, and I was right since I had a $14.95 Greek Salad with Chicken (photo: http://bit.ly/2XRzScS). The chicken was nicely grilled, but the Greek part of the salad was rather bland since the Kalamata olives and feta was barely evident in the mix. I've been coming here for years and they've more than earned 5 stars here. Food in this city is hit or miss, but being nice to me in a subtle human way goes a very long distance. I have to ask for crispy potatoes because of the way they prep their potatoes. There was a bit during pandemic when it seemed like they were cooking all their eggs in olive oil and I did not like that very much, but things are not like that anymore. I was just given the best decaf Americano. Definitely try the non-drip coffee here, they know how to use that machine. read more

This is a lovely little homey, neighborhood cafe on Cortland Street in the heart of Bernal Heights. It is the first time I have visited this place, but was very pleased with the varied menu selections - it was a cold day, and I saw that they had ramen - the thought of a piping hot bowl of ramen struck me as just the thing to have, and I was not disappointed - I added some chicken for protein and it was all very tasty (and a big bowl!). You go to the counter to order your items, and then they are brought to your table. My companion and I were there during the mid-afternoon, so we were only interested in snacks at that time, (my friend had fries and tea - but they also serve coffee drinks). We ended up staying for quite a long time, as we were talking a lot, and we were never made to feel uncomfortable about that - the two people in the kitchen/behind the counter were very friendly and helpful and made us feel most welcome. I'm kind of being nice because two stars means overall bad experience but I just don't like their food at all. I've lived in the neighborhood my whole life and I just never liked anything I've tried there. Like... not sure if not cooked well (like they overcook it) but it's just not impressive. Not very flavorful. The service is great though and the people are very nice. Maybe I'll find something I like there one day? I would suggest going to mixed traditions next door or even Bernal star.
