We wanted to pick up a bottle of wine as a gift and Madame Claude was within walking distance from our apartment. They have a pretty good selection at a wide range of prices. There are a lot of affordable bottles here! A lot of the bottles also have tags on them with notes from management, which is very helpful when you're not familiar with some of the vineyards. This is my first review for 2021 and it had to be for a place that I love. Madame Claude Wine is the best wine shop in the Greater New York Region. I haven't found a better wine shop even in Manhattan so I keep making a trip out to Jersey whenever I need to buy wine. The wine shop has a large selection of wine, mostly from France, as the owners are French. They spend a lot of time traveling around the world to find small vineyards so I love how they try to support small, local businesses. Pretty much every bottle that they sell is under $25 and I haven't had any that I haven't liked. I also love how a lot of their wine bottles have handwritten tasting notes that tell you what food to pair the wine with. The people who work here are also really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They're always available to answer your questions and do everything they can to help you find what you're looking for. Madame Claude Wine has a French bistro called Madame Claude Bis not too far away from the wine shop. I haven't tried the bistro yet, but according to the people at the wine shop, all the wines that they have on the restaurant's wine list are available at the wine shop so if you find something that you like at the restaurant you can always go back to the wine shop to get it. read more

Everything a wine store should be and more. First of all, it's beautiful inside. Almost as if you are in Paris: slightly chilled, beautifully designed this store sells a great assortment of wines and has a walk in cooler for chilled wines and craft beer. Along with the wines they sell fresh bread from Hudson bakery, an assortment of cheeses, terrines, spreads and more. Amazing. The wines didn't seem overpriced at all thought I'm not a connoisseur and the staff usually the owner and manager are on the money with their knowledge and professionalism. You can't not smile while shopping in this store. You can't not buy wine, cheese, bread and whatever else you can get your hands on while at this store. My wino level may be increasing if it means more frequent visits. read more

The decor of the place is awesome and they carry wine from all the different parts of the world. Though the place is bit pricey as compared to the other wine shops in the hood. This is the next best thing after Milk Sugar Love in the same neighborhood! It is like literally walking into a typical French Wine shop. To add on to a great collection of amazing wine, they also have a knowledgeable staff and owner, who is from southern France. I have a strange affiliation towards french & german wine and walking into this shop is a guaranteed win for me. They have an area where they stock meats & cheeses too. And don't feel bad if they are speaking French and all you understand is "Oui". It got me through several transactions. If there was one wine place I would always come to, it would be this one. No yellowtail, no boxed wines, just the good stuff. Came here by accident because we were actually looking up it's sister restaurant with the same namesake. The young lady I spoke with was pleasant and helpful. I told her we were eating at their restaurant and wanted a good wine that went well with seafood. She asked how much I was willing to spend, which I appreciated because they're conscious of their patrons' budgets. She described each wine very well, so much so that I bought 2. Her manager came in and was also very nice. He was super French with a thick accent, and when I asked him what was good at the restaurant, he recommended the specials and especially the mussels. The young lady also informed us that we were entitled to a free dessert at Madame Claude's Cafe since we bought wine at their wine store. Score! read more

The best wine store in Jersey City, and better than many wine stores in the city. The proprietors and staff literally can discuss every bottle of wine in the place, and are not remotely condescending. They also do very friendly and fun tastings on Saturday nights. The pricing is also very fair, and they are always interested in bringing in new wines. It's wonderful to patronize a business where people provide genuinely quality service and clearly love what they do. Why haven't I checked out this place before? I was always confused because of the other Madame Claude's in the area - this space was apparently meant to house the restaurant but is not strictly the wine shop that shares the same name (and owners). I popped in on a whim, they have a great wine selection with a great price range! In addition, tons of great gift ideas and various gourmet foods/snacks you can pick up to complement that bottle you get. Cute store. Limited selection especially if you are looking for something pricey. But good if your budget is $50 and below.

The store has gone through various cycles and with each cycle, there are improvements in terms of selection, quality, and service. The owners are great and they are doing the best to accommodate the area's differing and evolving demands. And, there is increasing competition, but their knowledge and dedication does bring the best selection of high quality wines. The cheese and charcuterie selection is good and provides excellent value. One of the nice things about the store is that is has not competed with the craft brew craziness and has maintained a great selection of French and Belgian (type) beers. read more

This is a great addition to the Hamilton Park area. 1. The owners are awesome. They are always there and are available to answer questions and help you select wine. Overall, the selection of wine is good - a significant portion is under $20 - thus it is everyday good wine. 2. The French cheese / charcuterie section is increasingly impressive. The selection is narrow, but covers a various types of cheeses across a reasonable price range. 3. Very good selection of beers and liquor. 4. And they have tastings - some are seasonal and others are topical. It has become the go to place on Saturday evenings when they have it. 5. Once in a while, there is French Gypsy Jazz concert - which is a nice addition to the whole part of France in Jersey City .... stranger things have happened .... The long-awaited Madame Claude Wine shop is finally open, right off of Hamilton Park. It's nice to see another cute shop open in Hamilton Square. Unfortunately, the shop is nowhere near its namesake restaurant, which is BYO. The French woman working there (perhaps an owner?) was very helpful and pointed me toward the limited Prosecco selection. I think she said they'd be getting more in soon. I hope so because the shop is fairly large and to only have one tiny shelf of bubblies (Champagne included) seems unfair to bubbly enthusiasts. There is a nifty walk-in refrigerator where there are some quality Belgian beers (Chimay, Duvel, etc.) as well as some white wines and bubblies. I was just in Paris and had a hard time finding food French beers, so perhaps saying that I would like to see good French beers sold at this store is too much to ask as maybe no good French beers are exported. But if they were, I sure would like to find them at Madame Claude's. They also sell a small selection of cheeses, sausages and pates, as well as baguettes from Hudson Bread. read more

Fabulous! If you buy a bottle of wine here and then go eat at their restaurant (which is just a short walk away), you get free dessert with your meal. Who wouldn't love that!?!? The vaults at madame Claude Wine may not be deep but the mostly French wines available are both diverse and interesting. I've come away with many spot-on recommendations for pairings with very un-French foods. A great place to explore unfamiliar wines. Store also features domestic and French hard ciders, craft beers, a small but thoughtful collection of spirits (ask for the amazing alternative to Cointreau that they stock) and a nice selection of cheese and charcuterie. This is not the shop to find your esoteric $200 bottle of Italian Brunello. With that said, Madame Claude Wine is the furthest thing from a liquor store with an obligatory assortment of junk wine. read more

Must visit - if you don't find the wine you are looking for, the aesthetics of this place will make the trip worth it! It feels like you are entering a mini - Napa valleyish winery. The place is built inside a loft with exposed bricks/ barrels et al. The staff is really nice - LuLu, the store manager is quite knowledgable. The store has a walk-in cooler for beer and they have other frills like - cheese, spreads etc. They have wine classes in their Madame Claude Cafe. Another thing we were told - if you buy the wine at the wine store then you get desserts on the house in Madame Claude cafe. My only wish is that they could put some benches or bar stools to grab a drink and make it eataly sort of arrangement within their liquor store. The owners very thoughtfully pulled a selection of wines together that they suggest pairing with certain foods, so if you're not sure which wine will go well with that pasta, vegetarian, meat, poultry, or fish dish that you're serving, this makes it easy. The wines and liquors are reasonably priced, and the staff has an incredible depth of knowledge about everything in the shop.
