Fantastic, delicious new Asian (mainly Thai) restaurant in between Central and Kendall that truly tops all the others I have been to in the area. This restaurant has great food, lovely owners, a heartfelt story behind it (explained below), and a warm and inviting ambiance. I came here after seeing the high Yelp reviews to check the restaurant out, and it met/exceeded expectations. Food: I ordered the coconut chicken soup, and it tasted just like what I had in Thailand. I then had the Pad Krapow Gai as my main, which was incredibly flavorful and filling with minced chicken, veggies, and a fried egg. It was a bit too spicy for me initially and the two owners were more than accommodating in helping fix the issue. My friend got the duck noodle soup which came with 5 jars of sauces/toppings to mix in. They nailed presentation as well. Owners: Mae Asian Eatery is owned by a husband and wife pair, who recently came back from living two years in Thailand, and they decided to open up a restaurant featuring the wife's mother's recipes. Thus, they called the restaurant Mae which means mother in Thai. The wife is the chef at the restaurant, and they constantly add to the menu whenever the mother calls in to describe a new recipe. I loved the story, and the owners truly care about the customer experience! The exterior is a bit unassuming, but the interior is very clean, chic and a warm and friendly space! I decided to try when I found this place on yelp when I saw this restaurant is Taiwanese restaurant. It got lost just in front the restaurant as there was no sign 'Mae Asian Restaurant ' but 'Tokyo restaurant '. When we entered, tables are already full. We ordered Drunken noodle and Vietnamese omelet. I liked drunken noodle with less sauce and salty. I liked the omelet except for the pork inside. I wished they put more vegetables inside not the pork. Overall, I liked the place and I want to try noodle soup next time. read more

This is soulful jewel box of a restaurant! The food is phenomenal, with nuanced layers of umami and spices while remaining true to its roots. The menu has choices full of complex flavors as well as simpler dishes that my 10 year old daughter loves. The staff members are warm, thoughtful, and kind. We've had the fortune of dining in many restaurants across the world with all the Michelin stars, molecular bells & whistles. A restaurant like Mae is timeless. We'll keep coming back! read more

The place looks rundown from the outside but the food is delicious! It was a hidden germ.. a Thai restaurant with good quality food at a reasonable price and they don't drown their food in oil. The food feels like a home cooked meal made by your parents (disclaimer i am NOT Thai). It's not outstandingly delicious where you would go O.M.G. It's delicious in a subtle way ... it's comforting and i honesty don't know how to describe it better. The downside is that we had to wait for 20 minutes even though we saw open tables. The service isn't as quick as you would expect from typical Thai restaurant ... but i think it's worth the wait. My personal favorite of the night was Larb Issan Salad with sticky rice. Even though it was a "salad", it was more of a ground chicken with lettuce so that you can make your own lettuce wraps. Also, i love how the sticky rice wasnt sweet and it complemented the ground chicken well. We also got their original street noodle and it made me regret not getting a bowl of soup for myself. Had dinner here last weekend, a new gem to the hustle and bustle of Cambridge food scene. Ordered the crab rangoons, fried calamari (absolute must have) I've tried at many places and this practically melts in your mouth, green curry with topped with avocado (must have), pad Thai, and you can't go wrong with Thai iced tea. The flavors and aromas are so authentic. The decor is very warm and welcoming with unique charm. They also have these banana chips that was bursting with flavor and i couldn't stop eating it. Staff was very friendly and explained the menu so well because there was just so much to choose from. Will definitely come back. I forgot to mention the fried ice cream but the cake was so crispy. The food is comforting, and the flavors boldly represent dishes from various regional Thai cuisines (and other areas of Asia). You'll find much more than your standard Thai noodle and curry dishes here, which is always a welcoming surprise for adventurous foodies. Rest assured, you'll find the mainstream Thai dishes here as well and executed perfectly. The portions are sizable, and the flavors are complex, built from what I imagine to be hours of stewing, and supplemented with the heat from various chili pepper blends. The restaurant is owned by a local family with a sister-brother duo at the helm. The owners and staff were all very friendly, providing recommendations of 'must-try dishes'. The external sign of the restaurant is still the old restaurant that was gutted and remodeled, so make sure to match up addresses! Of all the dishes we ordered, I've only had one before, so I hope these pictures peak your interest in giving them ago as well. Many dishes are staples to Thai cuisine, but some are often hard to find. We enjoyed every dish which is a testament on its own. Here's the run down: Steak house salad - This is not a traditional 'American' style salad, but more of a meat dish that can be used as a filling to make salad rolls. By far, I was the most surprised by the tenderness of the beef and refreshing spiciness, but by thinly cut red onions. The flavors were similar to larb. Laab - Minced chicken meat salad accompanied with sticky rice, fresh cucumbers/onions/leafy greens. Delicious savoriness with a slight citrus tang and brightness from the chili peppers. Kuay Tiew Ruae (Boat Noodle Soup) - This dish is definitely for carnivores and looks similar to a Chinese beef noodle soup but MUCH MORE flavorful and with this rice noodles. There's a mix of braised pork slices/chunks and pork meat balls with added pork cracklings to give a mix of textures. Short Ribs Khao Soi - Tender short ribs in a coconut curry broth with two types of noodle textures - providing a chewy and crispy sensation all in one go. This was the most unique dish that we had. Green Curry with Chicken - Silky green curry with flavors of coconut milk, veggies and avocado. Tasty but the noodle dishes out shined over this dish. Fried Green Tea Ice Cream - This ball of ice cream is heaven sent. The dough is fried perfectly, lightly crispy and soft. Good for sharing for 2-4 people. read more

got ubereats here a few times and their food never disappoints! their lunch specials are definitely worth it because since you can choose from an appetizer, gyoza or chive fried dough, along with a main dish for around $15-20. 1/26/23 -gyoza: the lunch special comes with 2 fried dumplings filled with pork and scallion, along with mirin soy sauce on the side. it's not going to be as crispy for delivery of the course, but the flavor of the dumplings was really good and paired well with the soy sauce. (4.5/5) 3/2/23 -chive fried dough: the lunch special comes with 2 small pieces of crispy dough with green chives, along with mirin soy sauce on the side. it's basically the same as scallion pancake, but with chives instead of scallions. even though it wasnt as crispy, it was still tasty and i enjoyed it! (4/5) -gaeng keyo green curry: this dish comes with spicy green curry with coconut milk, bamboo shoot, basil, thai chili, eggplant, and bell peppers. my spice tolerance is quite low so it was no surprise that this dish was way too spicy for me to finish in one sitting. but flavor-wise, it was definitely one of the better green curries that i've had. the chicken was a tad bit dry, but you couldn't really tell when eaten with the curry anyway. the delivery packaging wasn't my favorite; they put both the rice and curry in the same container, so the rice was pretty much drenched by the time it got to me. for $16, i felt like they could've added a bit more curry, since the curry-to-rice ratio was a bit off. but, it was really good and i'd probably get it again if i were dining at the restaurant in person. Excellent addition to the area! I've been missing more authentic Thai like NYC's old Larb Ubol and Zabb Elee and thankful for this addition with Isan offerings. Went for lunch on Friday at 11:50 and was packed, so came back at 5pm on Saturday, by the time we left at 6 it was almost full again. Larb was actually spicy and flavorful with interesting broccoli/carrot/cucumber side, boat noodles (and Thai iced tea) were on the sweeter side but the selection of spice condiments helped freshen it up. Got the crispy chicken zabb which is a limited special and very good--crispy, super flavorful, lots of acidity and spicier than I thought it would be but nothing too crazy. The rice on the side and cucumber help to balance things out. Came at like 6:30 on a Saturday and the place was half empty. Friend got the rum thai tea drink which came in a super cute cup. Surprisingly yum! I thought Mae would be just another Thai restaurant (which isn't a bad thing! I love Thai food!) but instead it was a super warm, comforting, well-lit, and fancy yet humble (does that even make sense?) experience. The waiters were super helpful and attentive despite being very busy, and the food was excellent as well as excellently priced. I recommend the golden bag (soft potatoes and peas in crispy wonton skins), the fat kid at heart (fried pork belly stir-fried with Asian veggies), although the classic Indonesian fried rice was also really great -- huge prawns, deliciously crispy meat, and fragrant rice. For two starters and three entrees across 4 people, we paid $20 each after tax and tip. Very reasonable prices and a great experience overall. Pretty solid spot, very kind staff and great fresh food! Came here with some friends, one of them was vegetarian and the staff was super accommodating to that. The crab rangoons were classic and very yummy, as well as the fresh spring rolls. The original street noodle was delicious I highly recommend! Portions are generous and food is delicious. The one thing I found bizzare is that our entire order (apps, soup and entree's) came out at the same time. Saw this on yelp under the hot & new restaurants to try and I am so glad that we came here. It's a pretty small place so seating is limited - fortunately we came at a good time so we didn't have to wait long but a long line started forming after we were seated. Honestly nothing to complain about! I'm not really a fan of fusion places but everything we ate was delicioooouusss. Everything came out SUPER FAST. For apps, we got calamari and the golden bags which you HAVE TO TRY - basically a vegetable samosa in a wonton wrapper, a great example of a fusion dish that works. I got the khao soi, which was delicious - the beef short rib was super tender and the curry was really good too. My girlfriend got the original street noodle, which was light and fresh - it also came with a nice vegetable broth on the side. The waiter was really nice and the owner even came to ask us how everything was towards the end despite being busy. Mae was Mehhh. I was so prepared to love this place. I was greeted promptly and seated without delay. I ordered the crispy calamari and the short rib noodle bowl. The calamari came out piping hot but was so greasy that I ate three pieces and pushed it away. The management saw my displeasure and removed them from my bill. The short rib noodle bowl was tasty, the serving was ample, and the meat was very tender. However, the curry sauce was a bit too sweet, one note and could have used some heat. I went here with a few friends for dinner on a Friday night. We arrived at 7:30pm and the place was packed. It's a small space inside the restaurant however the line moves fairly quickly. We were told it would be approximately a 30 minute wait but ended up being seated after only waiting 15 minutes! The food here was AMAZING. Hands down the best Thai food I've had in the greater Boston area (and I've eaten my fair share of Thai food) - this is as authentic tasting as it gets. My table got the golden bags to split. The only complaint is that we wish there were more! For the main dish I got the Short Rib Khao Soi which seems to be a popular choice here. The meat was tender and the curry had the right amount of spice and was also super flavorful. My friends got the Pad Thai, Indonesian Fried Rice, and Kua Kling Gai. The portion sizes here are generous but we all finished our entire dishes! For those looking to go here, I'd recommend eating family style to get to try multiple dishes - don't feel obligated to get 1 dish per person since it's a lot of food. I got to try a bit of the Pad Thai and it was sooo Good. Definitely going to get that the next time when I come back. I also got the Thai iced tea here and would highly recommend it! As opposed to other Thai iced tea I've had in the area which taste diluted, Mae's packs the right amount of flavor and it is super refreshing. The last thing I want to point out is the amazing service the restaurant had. The owner, Anil, got us seated and consistently checked up on us throughout the night. Amazing Asian spot in Cambridge, close to both Kendall and Central Square. The duck soup noodles are my typical go to dish here. So flavorful and the broth is rich and refreshing to drink alongside the noodles. The duck is always tender and spiced to perfection. My friend who's from HK typically doesn't find Asian food in the states spicy but has felt the kick from a few dishes here and has always been very impressed. To end every meal, I always try to get the mango sticky rice (when in season), which is the perfect blend of sweet and savory. I was thrilled to have my Mae's favorites again as a takeout order last night (my first restaurant experience since March!), and everything went perfectly. I ordered directly through their website, which offered pick-up times within 20 minutes. My meal was ready exactly on time, was packed well, and their setup for takeout pickup was efficient. Best of all, my dishes were as delicious as I remembered :) Mae's is the only place where I order general tsao's chicken--I never like the dish at Chinese American restaurants, but there is something about their sauce that isn't too sweet and has a depth of flavor that matches the crispiness of the chicken scrumptiously. The spring rolls were also as tasty as usual. They are larger than spring rolls at most Vietnamese places (truly packed with all the good stuff), and the peanut sauce has a kick to it that is unique. The staff was extremely welcoming, and I was pleased to learn that they provided meals for hospital workers for 2+ months during the pandemic! Pad see ew was delicious and filling (my sister got chicken and I got beef). My sister thinks this place has the best pad see ew ever, but the dish didn't stand out to me that much. I wasn't sure which kind of cuisine to order here- Vietnamese? Thai? Chinese? After hearing the waitresses speak Thai to each other, I decided to order Thai because I think they would be better at cooking Thai food. This place is small and does not take reservations. They don't serve alcohol either. We had to wait about 15 min for a table but it was worth the wait. We started off with the golden bag for our appetizer, which resembled small samosas filled with potatoes and peas. It was a bit weird that it came with sweet chili sauce, I decided it tasted better without the chili sauce. For my main course, I had the original street noodles. The noodles come with soup on the side. Do not pour the soup into the noodles, you eat it separately. The noodles have chili spice on the side, the waitress told me to mix in a little of the chili powder, and adjust the spiciness level accordingly. Being over confident of my capabilities to handle spiciness, I mixed in all the chili powder... and man it was too spicy for me. I managed to get through the bowl of noodles, which was delicious by the way, but kept thinking of going to 7 11 across the street to get milk! Luckily after 10 min of torture, the heat went away and I did not need to buy milk. There are 4 level of spicy for all the foods, mild, medium, hot and Thai spicy. Be careful of Thai spicy, it is super spicy! I look forward to coming back so that I can try all the other dishes. read more

Visited here for a work lunch as I heard great things about this place. Definitely glad I did! The Tom Yum soup was very flavorful without being too sour or over-bearing. I've never really had a Tom Yum that I've liked, or enjoyed, but this one is definitely amazing! My entree was the Drunken Noodles, which is one of my favorite foods to order. The sauce was beautifully glazed over each noodles, without being too heavy or soaked into the noodles. The flavor was on point and the portion size with the soup was just enough to fill me up (and I eat a lot!) Definitely would recommend this place for lunch. The noodles had decent texture. Broth was nothing to write home about, lacked complexity. The Waterfall steak salad was terrible. Overcooked, dry, and low in amount for $17. Use the money you would have wasted here and take an Uber to the far superior restaurants DAKZEN (Porter) or Cha Yen Thai (Watertown), whose dishes are tastier and literally half the price. read more

The khao soi was really delicious and flavorful, but the drunken noodles were very much lacking in flavor and amount of noodles. The portions were acceptable and the price came out to be around $30 post-tax which is slightly on the expensive side for a lunch special.
