We got the shrimp fresh rolls, pad kee mao and the pad thai. The spring rolls were good, but I wish were wrapped a bit tighter and with more sauce. It's more of a hoisin based sauce that the normal peanut style sauces, but still good! The Singapore Mae Fun was delicious but probably better enjoyed with another side dish as the smoked curry flavor became a bit monotonous towards the end. The Mango With Sticky Rice was excellent as well, with the portion being a little smaller than expected. I came here for the Short Rib Khar Soi because the customer picture looked very good with it's reddish-orange cream colored broth, topped off with a clump of fried yellow noodle and cubes of short rib. But it wasn't until I finished that I realized during the ordering process, I had quickly selected chicken for the protein. It was still good and after checking the menu once again, I didn't see short rib offered during lunch so perhaps that becomes available for dinner? I like the idea of an adorable Vietnamese/Thai small restaurant in Kendall Square. Mae Asian Eatery has cute china and a buzzing atmosphere. We ordered: -Fresh Por Pia Plate (Fresh Shrimp Rolls) -Chicken Pad Thai -Crispy Chicken Wings I would go back for the chicken wings alone. The wings were absolutely delicious, very crispy and went well with the accompanying chili sauce. The fresh spring rolls were good. There seemed to be hardly any shrimp in either of my vegetable rolls and a whole lot of lettuce. The staff here was friendly but overwhelmed. Our waitress mixed up our request to bring out all our food at once. She instead brought out the dishes we ordered as they were cooked. The table next to us had to wait 15 minutes for their order to be taken. Despite the confused service, we had an overall good time here. I had Mae Asian Eatery takeout after a very loong day and their khao soi was the perfect comfort food. After ordering from them GrubHub, the food was ready in around 30 minutes. The khao soi came in two separate containers: creamy coconut broth, noodles and chicken in one container and a topping of fried crispy noodles, broccoli (though it was a bit disconcerting that the broccoli was just boiled), and limes in another. The serving was generous sized, and I appreciated that they didn't assemble everything beforehand (otherwise the toppings would have become soggy). I'll definitely be eating there again but maybe next time I'll dine-in! read more

These appetizers are so delicious! The shu mai are definitely Thai style and taste homemade. Each piece is generously stuffed with a lot of filling and steamed. The kitchen at Mae Asian Eatery opened at 5pm on the weekday evening of my visit, but they let their guests come in to await comfortably at a table with water (hot or cold were both offered) or even a drink (as evidenced by the Thai iced tea I spotted on a nearby table). Tempting... But with an appetite of but one on this visit since I was grabbing a meal on my way to my evening's activities, and having ordered both an entree and a dessert, I had to bow out of this liquid treat. Kah Moo $8 fried tofu triangles and fried coconut fritters with black beans and taro. Served with tangy tamarind sauce, cilantro, and toasted peanuts. Short Ribs Khao Sai $16 12 hour braised short ribs with Thai curry, egg noodles, coconut milk, red onion, lime, pickle cabbage, cilantro, and chili oil topped with crispy noodles. The appetizer (Kah Moo) came first, in a wire basket on a wooden board. With a count of 8 triangles of smooth soft tofu within a fried exterior, and two denser patties each cut in two, it was a good portion for 2 or 4 to share (though admittedly, I ate half the contents of my basket). The tofu needed the dip in the accompanying sauce more than the fritters, and the fritters were a bit oily, but still fried carby goodness. The curry noodles arrived in a wide shallow bowl. To keep the crunch contrast of the crispy noodles, I scooped them off to the side immediately, for me to add back at will. A good idea, if I can say so myself. A tasty rich dish, I had the chili oil served on the side in case their mild was too spicy for this spice wimp. With 5 rectangular tables for 4 (except one could fit a fifth due to its corner position by the window and the wall bench seating) and a single table for 2 tucked along the inner wall, Mae is on the smaller side. And by 5:40pm, each of their tables were claimed. But then, when a new party walked in, like at Chinese dimsum, they were led to empty seats at an otherwise occupied table. Service was pleasant though there were a couple of misses - 1) I had to request a plate to use while eating the appetizer (they were apologetic about it though), and 2) my hot water was not refilled. Me, I enjoyed my meal and my visit, and hope to come back with additional stomachs to fill so I can try a larger spread of their offerings. Mae's is a reasonable walk from the Central Square MBTA station. It is located on Main Street, across from Royal East Restaurant, on the opposite corner of the block shared with Bertucci's. Their blue awning states "Tokyo * Terriyaki, Sushi, Chinese Cuisine" with white letters, but don't let that confuse you. read more

Passed by this restaurant during the pandemic and wish I had discovered it months sooner! I was greeted by the co owner, who's wife is also the chef and inspiration of the restaurant. He told us about the authenticity of their menu (his wife imports spices and creates dishes from her Thai hometown). After carefully sanitizing our table, he sat us at an outdoor table with a heater and lights right next to it. Even though it was chilly, the heater plus hot khao soi made for a very cozy and perfect fall meal. The owner was extremely friendly, gave great recs, and made sure we were extremely COVID-safe (sanitized bathroom before and after use, served us our dishes cautiously, etc.). The food was amazing! My husband had a dry curry - the spiciest thing on the menu and loved it (which is saying a lot - because he loves noodle dishes and this was served with rice). I had khao soi that I could go back for even today, just a day later :) the dishes were served on nice dinner ware - like the wooden board in my attached photo. I really hope folks reading this review can support this great business and keep visiting for takeout or outdoor dining until things go back to normal. read more

The owner of this place has terrible judgment in business, and this place has bad service in my only experience there. I give it three stars because the food is decent (though portions are small). I want to highlight that the owner's decision-making in customer service is very poor. I hope the owner can learn something from this post, so future customers can benefit. So, we ate here today and my friend asked for additional curry in his meal. We asked multiple times for extra curry and wanted to pay for it. The owner continuously refuses us, and we nicely requested for an exception. The owner continues to refuse us. We were so disappointed that I ended up giving them a low tip ($2). In many other restaurants in Cambridge, it's very common for restaurants to cater to additional requests, esp something as simple as adding "more curry". But not here. After we left, the owner took the small tip I gave personal and had the guts to come out and "chase" us. Yes, he literally came out and chased us. And he said something similar to the following: 1) "You guys are from MIT, you should be able to afford a higher tip" 2) "My waitresses are so disappointed at the low tip" 3) "Maybe you guys are not the right customers for us" Dear owner, let me remind you that #1) your comments are inappropriate, #2) tips are "discretionary" based on the level of customer service. Your waitresses are disappointed because of your "poor decision-making" which resulted in our bad experience tonight. You could have given us more curry, charged it to us, we would have appreciated that effort, and all would have been well. But you didn't, you chased us, confronted us about the tip, and made inappropriate remarks. And you are right, I am not and do not ever want to be your customer. There are many other Thai restaurants in Cambridge / Boston. So don't worry, I'm not coming back. Lastly, I suggest you take a business class to understand how to put your customers FIRST. read more

A decent and slightly pricey Asian eatery with lackluster flavors that hide behind superb food presentation. The short rib khao soi was the best dish out of the ones we tried, with good meat texture and curry flavor broth. It could have used a bit more meat for the price and the broth could have been a bit richer. The Indonesian fried rice was quite interesting with perhaps a bit too much sweetness. The pad phed moo krob was mediocre, with the crispy pork belly fried to a crisp and the flavors being very one dimensional. Finally, the crispy calamari was most disappointing, with far too much dough and barely any flavor. Growing up watching Gordon Ramsay, at first I was skeptical of Mae Asian Eatery despite the good ratings. Mae offers dishes from multiple Southeast Asian countries, which Gordon Ramsay would likely frown on. However, I'm glad I gave this place a chance. The first time I went there, I wanted to try a classic that I would be able to compare to other restaurants', so I got a plate of drunken noodles. It was delicious with the right amount of heat for me. The second time, I tried the original street noodle. It was equally amazing. I love that Mae serves great food consistently. The Original Street Noodle looks pretty standard, but the flavor is very unique. It comes with a side of soup which you are supposed to just drink on the side (not dip the noodles). My verdict: definitely worth a try but the food (and prices) did not wow me. I came here last week for my birthday with a friend and was pleasantly surprised to see a line when I arrived at around 7pm on a weekday. Usually when there's a line, it probably means that it's good, and the best part was that we only had to wait 5 min. The menu options sounded great but my friend and I decided on the pad Thai since it's a classic. She's on a pescatarian diet so she asked for shrimp only while I got the mix of chicken and shrimp. When our orders arrived, the waitress gave me her shrimp one while she got the one with chicken, but we realized that the waitress was confused because BOTH dishes had chicken and shrimp inside. Granted, the "shrimp only" one had one piece of chicken, but this is something to look out for, especially if you have an allergy. I don't think my friend cared too much so she gave me her piece of chicken, but I suspect that the chef didn't wash the wok. I would triple check your orders if you have a strict dietary restriction. The pad Thai was $12 (if you want just shrimp it's an extra $2) and I thought it was a little pricey for the quality and amount. The menu also said that the noodles came with some smoked tofu pieces but I only got one while my friend had at least ten... I'm glad I tried this place out and I don't think it tastes bad but I can definitely get cheaper and equally delicious tasting Thai in Cambridge / Somerville. read more

Not that Mae can be classified as a fully traditional Thai restaurant - while they do serve the staple noodles dishes, their menu includes such other items as yakisoba, for example. Unfortunately they were sold out of precisely the two appetizers we had our eyes on (the chive pancake and Kah Moo), so we settled for the Golden Bag, fritters stuffed with a potato filling that had the seasoning of Japanese curry - quite unique. For mains, my companion ordered the pad thai, while I went for the yakisoba. Both were delicious with generous portions, and adding a bit of the dry chili powder on the side gave an extra kick to the yakisoba. The staff seemed a bit overwhelmed by the crowd on a busy night, but they were nonetheless very friendly and responsive. Really solid lunch & dinner spot - between Pagu or Muku (two other restaurants you might be looking at for an Asian food around Central), I'd definitely go with this one. Muku is also ok, but I've found that Mae just has a lighter broth in many of their noodle bowls and that's just my thing. (If you've ever tried the Yuzu Shoyu ramen at Mr. Taka in Manhattan, that's my favorite if it tells you anything.) On top of that, Anil is great!
