Good food especially if you're a vegetarian ~ you take an empty bowl and fill it up with whatever you'd like ~ raw vege's, tofu, long strings of pasta or meat (which is in strips); if you want shrimp & scallops you tell the server that before you get in the line for the food; it's an extra $3. I think. Then you add several ladles of the sauces (sweet & sour, hot or soy), 1 ladle of oil (optional), ginger water, etc. and hand the bowl to one of the grill men. 2 men can grill at the same time because the round grill is quite large. He/they grill(s) it up while you stand there (takes less than a minute) and gives it back to you in a CLEAN bowl. NOTE: If you are vegetarian, you should ask him to clean the grill before you give him your bowl. If he doesn't understand, make a scraping motion with your hands & he'll get it (or the staff will tell him). There is a tip jar on that counter which (hopefully) is just for the grill man ~ you can put in a dollar or two for 2 people. One of the nicest things is the "dim sum" (some people call them dumplings) which is MEATLESS. They give you a sweet sauce to spoon over the top of it. Very yummy and if you ask for more, they will bring them and not charge you extra. The dinner is all you can eat, which includes soup that they will bring to your table. I think that soda costs extra, but not sure as I always order ice water. You can also do "take out" using the same method but telling them that when you enter the restaurant. Lunchtime is the same food, costs less, but it's not "all you can eat", so pack that bowl! The family that owns it is Chinese and know you after you've been there a few times. The bathroom is 1 small room with a toilet and sink. It's dirty, which bothers me, but I don't think about it because it's a fun place to eat with good food that's cooked at high temperatures and I'm assuming that the bowls (which are hot) have been washed in a dishwasher. I make sure I don't need to use the bathroom while we're there. If only a Chinese customer would tell them about it in a culturally polite way that wouldn't offend these nice folks, it would be helpful. I've seen many Asian people dine there in the past so I'm hoping someone will see this suggestion and act on it, even if it's by telephone. When it's full, it's noisy, but otherwise it's diner-type of noise. Very casual dress ~ jeans, shorts, etc. but some people are dressed up that come straight from work. read more

I love this place. It is thoroughly unfancy and certainly isn't sparkling and shiny new. A lot like the small, non-touristy restaurants in Chinatown, I suppose. But the food has always been great. The veggies and sauces are just right, IMO (ie, they happen to have ones I like). The dumplings and hot and sour soup are fabulous, and I have been known to stop by just to get soup and dumplings for takeout. The nice thing about the style of eating is that everyone can have basically the same meal, but each member of the family can choose combinations of food and sauces that they like. The owners/employees are like old family friends, and remember us even when we haven't been there in many months. They are friendly and accommodating. The restaurant has a hole-in-the-wall kind of feel, but it is always full of people (like groups of high school kids, families, couples) who seem very familiar to and with everyone there. read more

Ambiance wise, I have been in worse looking Chinese/Asian restaurants in Chinatown, NY and they are awesome - so don't let looks determine if you want to eat here. Everything is clean and the decor is simple. Honestly, what are you really expecting...a PF Changs? If you love Lo Mein, this is a must go. A place where you don't have to settle for what you get over the counter, but be able to enjoy the creations you make. OK, maybe the second bowl wasn't as fantastic as the first, but I'll learn! The Magic Grill is one of my favorite places to eat with friends. As earlier reviews have stated, the place is kind of run down but the food more than makes up for it. There is a very wide selection of ingredients and sauces and watching the food get made is entertaining. For a quick, all-you-can-eat, cheap meal, this is a great choice. read more

LOOOOOOVE this place. Was a big "JP Lee" fan in New Brunswick before it closed a few years ago. This place is a great substitute. Food always looks fresh. Sauces are great. Service is wonderful. Would have given 5 stars except for the grill area is always a little (sometime more than a little) dirty looking. The cooks/staff need to scrape that thing down a bit more and DEFINITELY clean the catch tray out. "The Grill" as the local High School patrons call is indeed a supreme value. Even with the $1.50 for extra bowl you can't go wrong. As other reviewers remarked, the dumplings served as part of the dinner price are excellent. The food is healthy and although I'm not a veggan, this is a veggan friendly place. They will even clean the grill, to mitagate any cross contamination issues. But, ask nicely . The meat selection is shaved chicken, pork or beef. The buffet includes tofu, bok choi, onions, green peppers, carrots, onions, bean sprouts and other healthy items. The place has zero atmosphere and is dire need of a renovation. But, if you are on a budget and better yet a diet, you must include "The Grill" on your short list. read more

Ever since the Mongolian BBQ place in New Brunswick closed, i've been looking for a new one just like it. I was excited to hear about this place, and ended up going. I ordered a Wonton Soup with my meal, and the broth was terrible, as was the wonton in the soup. Might be some of the worst wonton soup I ever had. I also had a bowl with pork, noodles, onions, chinese broccoli, and carrots. The food wasn't bad, although was not as good as the place in NB. After leaving, I was had some massive stomach pain and ended up in the bathroom for awhile. Not entirely sure if it was the food because I did enjoy the bowl I had. But I'll probably keep looking for a new place, definitely won't be coming back though. read more

This place makes a killing with their prices. But has definitely gone down hill. You think with all the money they make they would remodel and clean up the Place. Food is the wrong Temperature and its a haven for bacteria . The food tongs sit on the raw meats and then you touch it with your hands and now cross contaminate germ. You go here primarily for three things on the all You can eat Saturdays and Sundays. You go here for the transcendentally delectable and healthy,delicious beyond ALL LEVELS OF HUMAN COMPREHENSION brown rice-shiitake mushroom? and teriyaki ?? sauce dumplings !! Nice place. Tons of parking. Yes it is a dive but its clean. Decor is what it is you don't come here for that. Service was great they kept asking if we want refills and how we were. Check and fortune cookies come early but they do not rush you. You get a lot for a good price here. Quality is what it is for eating cheap. Dumplings and soup come with your meal. Meat is freeze dried, that was shocking. Veggies are fresh. Noodles are good. Tons of sauces. Make your bowl and they cook it on a big stone. They don't clean it after each use but i don't care. Food gets to you fast and hot. We tipped a dollar a bowl to the guys cooking it and tipped the waitress. Its all you can eat but u cannot take any home.. Duh! Great lunch special - $7.50 for hot food cooked on a Mongolian grill and includes a soup too! They have various thin meat slices and a nice variety of veggies. This is the place to go if you want hot food made to order. You customize and pick whatever you want - chicken, pork, beef, zucchini, broccoli, tofu, carrots, sprouts, Asian greens, pineapples, onions, etc. and you pick your own sauces as well. It's easily the dirtiest food establishment I've ever been to, and it's almost to the point of negligence. There was food on the floor and an employee walked by it as though it was completely normal. The price is fair for an all you can eat place (for lunch anyway, quite a bit more expensive for dinner and its the same food). The quality is decent, lots to choose from and delicious sauces with tons of combinations. The service is their downfall but it doesn't make or break the place. I've been eating here since the mid 90's and have always been happy with their food and service. Their food is fresh and you add your own sauses to your taste. Very important if you are watching your salt. They make their own wontons which i think are the best i've eaten, not soggy like 95% of the restaurants out there. Overall my experience was horrible. Food was good and cook was very kind but when it came to our waitress i was appalled by her extremely rude behavior. We asked for waters multiple times and we weren't served them till 30 minutes later. We ordered a second bowl of noodles and asked to wrap it once we were done eating and the women refused and walked away. This one deserves a NEGATIVE star! The place is a disgusting grease pit and this is not an exaggeration. We've tried one in NYC and it was an opposite experience. The NYC one has a lot more selections and the quality is much better. The meat was just there thawing in room temp. The one in NYC has it on top of ice. All the ingredients looked old and disgusting...not to mention the awful tasteless sauce. They couldn't even cook the brown rice right. The rice was not cooked through at all. The hot and sour soup looked like it came from a pig's trough. The wonton soup contained wontons with barely any meat in them. The "chefs" didn't speak any English and moved like they didn't want to be there. They used water from a dingy sink to cook on the grill. We should have followed our instincts and walked out. So my boyfriend, myself and my brother have always loved coming here for the great food (especially the dumplings) however we will never return again after what we witnessed last time we were there. I was eating when I looked over and saw the young boy who works there going to town on his nose. He would then inspect what he pulled out and flick it on the floor. He did this several times and in between he handled patrons silverware and gave out water glasses. It was so disgusting that I said something to the owner when we got our check. She said she would check on it and came back and said "he had an itch." I guess the itch was in his brain bc that's how much he was up in there. The main point being that he never once washed his hands before then touching patrons silverware and glasses. We all vowed never to go back after that and I'm glad we haven't bc the other day I was at the cleaners nextdoor picking something up when I saw one of the chefs sitting outside picking his nose. It's like an epidemic over there! So even though the food is good I would stay away untill this hygiene issue is resolved unless u want a side of snot with ur noodles. read more

Definitely a place I would return to. Not your fanciest place but a place you will defined leave with a happy full belly. I went on a Friday night with a pretty large group, luckily they were able to seat us. I really enjoyed the rice dumplings they serve you right as you sit down. Then, they take your order for soup from a selection of 4 types: wonton, egg drop, sweet and sour, or vegetable. I went with the vegetable, which was alright, but wished I went with a different option. You can go up whenever to make your bowl and can get seconds if you need more. Great make your own set up with a wide variety of veggies to put in your bowl. The selection of sauces to use is also a good variety. Make sure you like your bowl high because when the veggies cook everything will settle down. It's great to watch them cook it on a round hot stone and then slide it into your bowl. Make sure you get done to go and then watch them get the whole bowl into a small container... It's like magic! read more
