Decided to stop in and try Chiras's this evening. Good friends ate here the week before and enjoyed it. I was greeted by a very friendly server named Logan, he showed me to a booth, and let me settle in. After a few moments he came back with some fresh rolls and took my drink order, I opted for a glass of the house Pinot Noir. They have a nice varied menu and also offer some Chef specials. I decided on the Parmesan Crusted Halibut as my entree and a Ceaser salad to start. The salad arrived quickly and looked very good, I was informed that they had just made fresh croutons. After finishing my salad, which was very good the croutons were light and crispy, my dinner arrived. The overall presentation was excellent, the potatoes had a nice flavor and went well with the fish and asparagus. The halibut was cooked just right and the crust was perfect. Overall the meal was exceptionally delicious. I will make an effort to to come back and try more of the menu. I was informed that Saturday evening is a good time to stop in as they have live music. Highly recommended for a nice dinner with spouse, friends or work associates. read more

Now, you'd think a restaurant hosting a group of endurance athletes would be prepared for a marathon, but service-wise, this was more like a relay race where the baton got dropped immediately. Our poor waiter was running around like a headless chicken the entire night. Hydration is key for triathletes, but finding a water refill here turned into an absolute heroic quest. I practically needed a GPS, a compass, and a hydration pack just to self-serve a glass of water. As for the food: * Sirloin Steak (Mine): Absolutely perfect. Chef's kiss. * Steak Salad (My Girlfriend's): We asked for medium, but it arrived a bit on the rare side. Still edible, but definitely had a little too much "life" left in it. * Our Teammate's Culinary Misadventure: One guy in our group had the absolute worst luck--or the kitchen had a personal vendetta against him. He ordered a steak medium, and it came out cooked to hockey-puck well done. Naturally, he didn't want to play Russian roulette with another steak, so he pivoted to Fish & Chips. It arrives, he takes a bite, and the fish is still cold in the middle! At that point, we weren't sure if it was bad luck or if he secretly owed the chef money. The Verdict: The potential for great food is definitely there (my steak proved it!), but Chira's was completely unprepared for a large crowd. If you're coming with a big party, maybe pack your own water bottle and pray the kitchen roulette favors your table! read more

Wow. What happened to this place? I used to love it, but tonight I left feeling so bummed out. I treat myself to a steak once a year, and that includes store bought. Tonight I got the ribeye and it was easily the fattiest, and worst steak I've ever received in a restaurant. I ordered medium rare, and out of the half of the steak that I was able to eat, half of that was rare, and the other half was medium. I picked through what I could, and ended up leaving an absurd amount on the plate. I took a photo, but I don't think it would be tactful to post it here. Midway through our meal, our server came by and asked how everything was. And although I was apprehensive to say anything, I decided to tell him what I thought. And I get it. The servers have zero control over the food. So I made sure that we tipped well. But for $57 plus tip for a steak, I shouldn't be leaving the restaurant borderline angry. Despite the food, our server was lovely. But I think we might be looking for a new favorite Salem restaurant. read more

A new Thanksgiving tradition has begun... For the of past five years or so, my wife & I have celebrated Thanksgiving at Rudy's Steakhouse in downtown Salem. With the unexpected closing of Rudy's early this year, my wife & I had to seek an alternative... And we sure are glad that Chira's stepped in big time in filling that void. With their relocation to Pringle Plaza and ample parking, a new Thanksgiving tradition has begun for the both of us. We were greeted cheerfully by the host & seated promptly. We were fortunate to have Yakovnava as server again, at Chira's She brings a cheerful & courteous exuberance that makes the meal so much pleasant. On this Thanksgiving day lunch around noon, the restaurant was already stirring with movement and excitement, creating that perfect holiday ambiance. My wife had the Turkey entree, which she raved about that moist and tender turkey. I had the 10 oz Prime Rib, that was done oh so well. New location - had to check it out. 60 BDay. Had the New York Med Rare - really quality beef (no doubt) but was really undercooked. Cold in the middle - mooo - I NEVER send things back but tonight I did. 5-7 minutes later it shows up with a deep char on the outside. Still rare in the middle but at least it's warm. I can eat high quality meet rare. Not everyone can. It seemed like the grill was way too hot trying to rush a beautiful steak through the kitchen. Seems like the grill master needs to learn to cook a $42 NY. Staff was great. So were the crab cakes. read more

Really happy we came! Happy hour was angreat value and lots of options... we just ordered about 6 items for 3 people and shared. Fun! The wings were honestly the best cooked wings I have *ever* had... crispy on the outside but moist and flavorful on the inside. We went for a long lunch and sat outside. Besides the weather being absolutely gorgeous, the view of downtown and the river was really calm and serene. Our server was attentive, she brought the drinks right away and asked about appetizers. We wanted to sit and chat for a bit before ordering and the server respected that. Eventually, I ordered the French dip sandwich with sweet potato fries and my guest ordered the chicken fried steak. Both were very flavorful and the portion sizes were awesome. I got to finish my French dip later on as a midnight snack. The jus was still delicious. I recommend this restaurant to those that want a delicious dining experience. Ate here for the first time last weekend. The ahi tuna and crab cake appetizers were outstanding. They have an excellent wine selection and really good cocktails. I ordered the halibut which was also delicious buuut my sister in law got the salmon which was so fishy it was almost inedible and my brother and hubs both got steaks med rare and both were overcooked, tough and chewy. May have just been a bad night for the cook, but for the price this was absolutely NOT worth it sadly. read more

We gave this place a try for Thanksgiving in 2024. I know it's majorly delayed review, however as we are coming up to Thanksgiving again I felt we should post this review lest someone else should SUFFER the same experience as we did last year. We waited a fair amount of time to be seated, and it didn't get any better from there. The food was look warm at best, and certainly not what I would expect for a Holiday Meal, given the Price. Portions ranged from TINY to small, Turkey was dry. mashed potatoes were bland. Then there was the Cranberry Mustard which left a Horrible taste in my mouth. I spent most of the rest of the evening trying to get rid of the taste. I literally scraped my tongue and try virtually everything on our table to get rid of it. I believe there was a single candle on the table and although I don't remember the exact music that was playing it did not seem like it made us feel like we were eating a Thanksgiving Dinner. I would go to McDonalds for Thanksgiving Dinner before I would go there again. Don't waste your time or money read more

The restaurant was lacking a server when I got there. This is the second time I have reviewed this place! Who erased my first one? I went for lunch and there was only 2 other tables occupied. The food was terrible. The meat was overcooked and dry. It was hard to cut with a knife. I couldn't get out of there any sooner. I will never come here again. Went here for Thanksgiving lunch. Nice restaurant. Server was pretty good. Prime rib was awesome. Turkey was great. Clam Chowder was great. Stuffing was Good but Very skimpy on portion size. Mashed potatoes were pretty good. Cheddar broccoli was alright. Wished for more side options. Gingerbread spice cake was delicious. Overall, it was Good. I'm not sure what to say. Chira's has been a hit and miss with service. Sometimes great and sometimes not. I went there with friends to the new location. It is lovely. However, the service was really bad. The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived. We were seated quickly. After that it all went downhill. Our server was amazingly inattentive. We had to actually call out to him to get wine. Twice. Three of us were disappointed. Our food just sat on the counter so the fish and chips were room temperature. My hamburger was also lukewarm. The sweet potato fries were cold and limp. One in our party was pleased with the tsunami dish. The red wine by the glass was very good. I heard good things about Chiras and decided to make reservations for seven before a concert at the local theater. We sat for a long time before anyone acknowledged us. When they finally did, we told them we were now pressed for time. We went ahead and ordered and waited for well over a half hour and the food still hadn't come. By now we'd been waiting an hour since our arrival. We finally had to leave, and went without dinner, in order to make the show on time. Our group wasn't impressed. As the host, I was embarrassed. It was our 20th anniversary and our 2nd time. 1st was a great experience with friends so we thought we'd go for our anniversary. Well this time not great. Went for happy hour at 4 on a Saturday not busy. So food off happy hour was mediocre. We ordered steak bites teriyaki and marsala and no juice to dip all the bread in. Crab cakes were ok, seared ahi was in big cubes not sliced like last visit so not consistent with ther food. Jalepeno bites were frozen and they just added pico de gall over it. we asked to have our salads and steak bites after appetizers and they all came at once. So we had a table full of food. waiter didn't come to check on us, had to wave someone down to bring me water and asked for a side of butter to put on bread that came with Marsala bites cuz there was nothing to dip the bread into and it never came. Thought since it was our anniversary they'd offer us a bottle of wine at a discount or even a dessert. Nothing. Oh they did come and light the candle on our table. We could've went anywhere in Salem for our 20th anniversary but chose her from past experience but we won't be back for awhile. Kitchen needs to be consistent!!! don't serve a dish different. also that night was caribbean night and I think that was their focus getting band set up. read more

Well Chira's food was spot on (pictures following) Seattle visitors & family took us here... attentive, polite, informative, friendly service can't be beat, when you're wanting that culinary experience...Food was excellent & served hot like hot food should be, and the salads were cool and crisp. I miss taking a picture of the butternut squash /sage cream sage ( that sauce was so light ...I could have stolen more of hubby plate. ... I brought 1/3 of mine home( crab, stuffed ravioli with pesto and artichoke and sun-dried tomatoes & mushrooms sauce. The hostess who met me at the door was rude and inept. She questioned whether or not I was at the right restaurant, and then questioned if I knew who my party was. Our reservation was for 5:30 PM, and at 5:30 PM our group was still waiting to be seated. In the meantime, no invitation to wait at the bar. We all gathered by the front door. Very, very unimpressive. The only saving grace tonight was our server, Logan. He was an incredibly good server. The small banquet hall we were placed in was sterile, and resembled an echo chamber. We could not even hear each other's conversation. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had. Two stars instead of one because of Logan. read more

Everything was great except for my steak. The ambience, the service, the salad, all top notch. But I was wanting a good steak since I hadn't had any in weeks. If i'm paying plenty for steak, it should be tender and not tough. It should not have heavy seasoning where you taste more salt than steak. It was cooked medium rare as I asked. This place was a bit of a hit and a bit of a miss for me. The location is a bit peculiar, I would have never found it if I wasn't looking for it. And I would have never looked for it if I had not been recommended it. Very nice atmosphere in there though. Very charming! We were greeted, seated, and served water immediately. It was a Friday night at 5:30 with reservations. I ordered a cosmopolitan and my husband ordered a Long Island iced tea. The cosmopolitan looked nor tasted anything like a cosmopolitan. The Long Island iced tea was decent, not bad at all. We ordered the onion rings and coconut shrimp for starters. Both were outstanding. The onion rings used red onions which I haven't seen before, they were crispy and had a spice sauce drizzled on top. Very good. My Caesar salad was lackluster at best. My husbands side salad was pretty alright but the house made honey mustard has horseradish, which isn't preffered. My husbands steak was well done and not medium as he ordered, however it was seasoned very well and he enjoyed both the broccoli and potato sides he got. I had the chicken Marsala that ties with my favorite chicken Marsala at a different restaurant, it was THAT good! However, that chicken Marsala was a nightly special, it is not on the every night menu. And it should be. We will come back to try more items on their menu. read more

My wife and I had the fried calamari, coconut shrimp, crab and mushroom ravioli, and the Kobe beef burger. It also came with 1 thing of bread and butter. So with the bread and butter, calamari, and the shrimp I found it be overly sweet. The sauce for the calamari was too sweet, the shrimp itself was sweet (which is expected) but the sauce it came with was too sweet. The butter for the bread was honey butter, but it could have used some salt for a nice contrast. They seem to really enjoy mango chutney, which I found to be underwhelming. The ravioli was good, and the wife found the burger to be just okay. Overall the food was ok, if I go back i'll definitely be trying different appetizers without the mango chutney as the dipping sauce. read more

I initially tried to order two glasses of Piesporter wine, but after she checked was told they were out. She offered a Pinot Gris, which I took, but I was charged more than the menu listed. I ordered the androilue sausage tortellini with shrimp. My wife ordered the Oscar, and my daughter ordered some noodle dish with shrimp. My shrimp, and my daughter's was overcooked, the tortellini too cooked. For an Oscar, at that price, I doubt if my wife's dish had more than two teaspoons of crab, maybe. Maybe they still have soft opening issues, but not pleased. The waitress said the owner would talk to us....but he never showed. Maybe we might retry this place in 6 months, but our dinner wasn't worth the price. Service was good, and their garlic bread butter was very good. read more

After coming here now about 3 to 4 times I want to say I thoroughly enjoyed the food I've tried and love me some Chira's! This has become an occasional weekend dining experience. My family and I keep coming back for the delicious food. Just the other day I tried the spicy jalapeno burger that's not on their menu online, but instead their menus in house. It was to beat somebody over if they had knocked my plate down for! Paired with their refillable list of lemonades, if you enjoy trying spicy foods this ones for you folks. I've also tried the steamed clams and any and all the shrimp. All that was excellent also. From the moment you walk in to the time you leave hopefully satisfied you're treated like part of the family and I enjoy that homey but upscale feel when I walk into Chira's. Speaking of that I'd like to specifically shout out the host that that was friendly and kept all the water glasses filled! I also always enjoy our usual waitress Anna or Tanya, always forget her name my apologies. Thank you especially to Yuriy for his wonderful and delicious food the Chef! We had 8 people and half of us were not impressed. My sister ordered the filet and it had so much fat. They said they would redo it but we all finished by the time it came back. Our server had probably-15 tables and was nice but not available at all. It was good ambiance but bad service and food was mediocre at best. Stopped by for lunch on a Thursday, and the place was very quiet. It's tucked back an an unassuming business center with some other restaurants and some clothing stores, and takes a bit of persistence to find. Your adventure will be well-rewarded, however, if what you're looking for is excellent food in a cool quiet place. The server was attentive, efficient, and pleasant. I had an onion-ring burger, and my friend had a salad with steak, both of which came out looking beautiful. The burger was excellent, and the fries it came with were super-crispy and delicious, definitely above-average. The onion rings on the burger were a standout, too (as was mentioned in another review). Made me wish I had ordered those by themselves. My friend's steak looked perfectly-cooked. I would highly recommend Chira's if you want to get away from all the traffic and other busy lunch spots in central downtown. It deserves to be packed on the merits of the food, but it's blissfully tranquil. read more

BY FAR, one of THE worst restaurants I have EVER been to in my life. Stopped by with hubby for dinner after checking out a winery in the area based on the good Yelp reviews. There is absolutely something 'off' about the reviews for this place. Walked in to an empty restaurant around 6 pm which should have been my first clue to leave. Proceeded to stand at the empty hostess station for over 10 min. Just as we were about to leave, someone came out from the kitchen and asked us if we had a reservation. I almost choked and asked 'why, do we need one?' because the restaurant was empty. We proceeded to be seated in a dark, damp, dirty corner booth next to the bar. Great! Was ignored for another 15 min or so until a waitress with a heavy Russian accent finally came out and took our order (a burger and fish and chips). We literally sat there being ignored for another half hour or more. No sign of Nadia anywhere. The restaurant was like a ghost town with just one other party of 2 and another party of 4 seniors. I finally flagged down the only other employee in sight - another waitress- and asked her to send our server over. We were going to leave at that point, we were starving and sick of being ignored in this creepy, dirty weird place. Natalia finally reappears and when I asked her what the status of our order was, she says "Well, it's kind of BUSY tonight so it might take a while". I told her we needed to go and to just cancel the order then. She says she will go check on it, and I asked my husband if she was joking when she said it was kind of busy or just being sarcastic since the place was EMPTY! See attached pictures and judge for yourself! Natalia returns with our food in hand (what a coincidence, just as we were about to leave) and when she puts the plates of fish and chips and burger and fries down, I notice some blackened chunks if something on both plates. (see pics) I ask her what on earth that was and she said the blackened chunks were 'fries'. I told her those were not like any 'fries' I had ever seen and nothing I would serve to anyone, much less eat. I asked to speak to a manager or owner or the cook, and of course none of those people were available. Nadia actually said that those were the 'fries' they always served, and people LOVED them. We paid the bill and left, still starving, and just appalled that this place is even open. I ate a couple bites of the burger, which was 'seasoned' with a disgusting amount of salt and we had barely reached the car when I had - you guessed it - severe food poisoning stomach cramps. I barely made it back to my hotel room where I have now been in agony all night. Big, big mistake ever walking in to this place. If a restaurant in a busy part of town is empty at 6 pm, ask yourself why and go elsewhere! read more

I came here for a team event for 15 people and we had made a reservation. Jill was our server and she ensured everyone was accommodated. I liked the bread that was serviced with our food but did not like my pear salad. The pears and onions were dipped in wine. They did not have a lot of vegetarian options.
