Excellent dirty chai latte with a simple modern and industrial environment, Magpie is a place I will definitely stop by whenever I'm in the area. There were board games in the window. The barista (who I would assume may be the owner) was friendly and accommodating. Only downfall is that they don't serve food. I'm a fan of this place, but I rarely make it over. Magpie Roasters are micro-roasting over on Fourth Street. This is their first retail space, and it's a stand in the lobby of the Discovery Museum. I really like the small scale nature of Magpie, and I've been watching these guys for a few years now. I really enjoy their coffee. The space is well lit - like the rest of the lobby, and there's a few tables filling space. I've been in both to pick up some beans, which is much more convenient than trying to setup a time to pick up beans, as well as have a cup. Their product is solid, and I wish it was a little more convenient for me to get over here. I used to live 2 blocks away from here, basically right between them and the Hub, but moved before they re-opened. I'm not in near as often as I'd like since the location is a little out of the way for me, and there isn't any really convenient parking. I think there's a part of me that feels like a little bit of a creeper too when I'm in there, as the Discovery tends to have all those kids running around, and I'm the 30-ish guy having coffee in the corner . . . read more

Saw on Facebook they were promoting the fact that they just opened full service on Wells, so I thought I'd give it a try. A few places in town serve Magpie, so I was anxious to see what their own place might be like. I had a 12 oz latte. It was very good. At $3.50, it was a good value and comparable to most other coffee shops. What is NOT comparable is the atmosphere. Don't come here looking for a comfortable place to have a meeting with friends and definitely not for a business meeting. It was very hard to find because at this time there are NO signs - none at all. Very strange experience. I walked in and there was only one other guy in the joint. He was not behind the counter when I entered. He looked at me but did not say anything. He moved to the counter, not behind it, and I finally asked "do you work here?" and he said yes. Still no "can I help you?" It's like they are not quite ready to be open, except maybe for friends that recognize them. Pretty warm inside, cooled only with a swamp cooler so the front and back doors have to stay open. It's really more like a garage than a real coffee shop. They have roasting equipment set up right in the space, which I think is cool. You can purchase the coffee they roast on site. Seating is just benches and stools at the counter - not really comfortable. Good coffee for sure, but no way I am driving past Coffeebar, Hub, and Bibos just to hang out at this place on Wells. read more

I normally go here between 2-4 times a week. The baristas are friendly and the always make my vanilla latte with almond milk consistently good. Although I wish they had baked items here so I could have something to snack on on the way to work. I also with that they would change their togo cups to something else as it gives their drinks a weird taste, in a porcelain cup they are perfect and although not bad in a togo cup, just taste different and I did bring this up to the barista so maybe they will do something. read more

Small local joint with no pretense. Or much signage. Wooden benches, marble countertop, italian espresso machine and a roaster are the decor. And some bike art. Some positives about the place are: -They do their own roasting -The coffee is really good -I like they are in the Wells area. Some negatives are: -They are NOT the famous Magpie of Sacramento. How are you going to open a business two hours away that does the same thing with the same name? -The hipster working behind the bar made it kind of difficult to order. He was acting like he was doing me a favor taking my order. -Their hours are ridiculous. They close at like 3:00pm or something. read more

Their tea selection is surprisingly well curated for an otherwise minimal coffee shop. They have black tea with lavender, earl gray, as well as a chai and maybe one more. All of them beautiful loose leaves and flowers. My current favorite is the chamomile with fruit. The brightly colored blossoms and small citrus rinds will have you feeling calm and collected. read more

Just tried this place for the first time on Sunday and it is amaaaaazing! I usually only get a breve latte at local coffee shops and it's super delicious here! I'm only giving it 4 stars because I wish the parking could be better :-/ but such is life. I would still highly recommend, though! As far as I'm concerned, I think the pricing is pretty reasonable. A breve latte is $5, which I feel is pretty fair considering how amazing it is. I'll definitely have to see about buying a bag of their coffee to take home. Coffee is excellent! So much so that I bought a bag of the Pica Pica at the farmers market on California Avenue a few weeks later. When I went to Magpie I had a latte to go, and it was SO good, I couldn't stop raving about it to my husband. Service was just okay. The person who made my latte was nice, but not super friendly. It just felt like a business transaction. That is fine, I wasn't looking for a friend, but little things like that I remember. Ambiance. . .Well, I was in a rush so I didn't have time to sit, but I would if it was a nice day and had some friends with me. They have some outdoor seating which would be enjoyable. I probably wouldn't st inside, as it just felt very industrial and cold. I did see a few people reading a newspaper and enjoying conversation at the bar while I was there. I will be back with friends to share my new found treasure-the coffee is great! read more

The barista was super nice and made a good latte. The atmosphere was a little thin, but I bet it would be better with more people in there. It seems that the primary focus is not the crowd they draw in through the doors to their physical location. Magpie is centered around their coffee roasting and distribution. The coffee selection and espresso quality is delicious. The espresso is potent. It's like someone had a toasty campfire in my mouth. The drip coffee complements the espresso very well. The lounge area here isn't the coziest. It's a hardwood meets industrial look that works for the store front aspect but not the "hang out and enjoy my coffee". The tables here aren't the sturdiest so this probably isn't the place to go for work/homework.(which is intentional) Overall it's a cool vibe here. read more

I am a native Nevadan and I'm always looking for the best coffee in town. I was excited to try this place, however, they didn't have a big selection of drinks. Vanilla was the only flavor they could add to a latte and they only carry whole milk. The latte itself was delicious and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed her hot chocolate. They also had some board games and cards to play while you sip your drink. The building is a bit industrial but I saw it as modern/hipster. Prices were very fair. It's definitely worth a try if you're looking for a new coffee place to try. read more

I wouldn't call myself a "coffee snob" but others have. I'm not difficult to please, I enjoy all types and preparations of coffee. I am difficult to impress but I'm not a jerk about it. I know what I like and I usually have a high standard for what IMO makes a good cup of coffee. So while visiting the city of Reno I decided to look up some of their coffee spots. I'm glad I did because Magpie's coffee is delicious and impressive. I had the Pica Pica prepared in an AeroPress. It was fantastic. In fact, it was so good I plan on a return visit before I leave Reno. Magpie is a great little coffee shop that roasts their beans on site. If you like no-nonsense, real deal coffee where you can taste the quality of the bean and the roast, Magpie is for sure a place to check out. This is the best coffee I've had since I moved here from Scottsdale. They roast the beans in house and they know what they are doing. I live in Carson and drive here just for the beans, so I can have this coffee at home. The staff is friendly and they have a huge bar similar to what you'd find in a tavern. Keep up the good work. I went here for a casual work meeting and was pleasantly surprised at this venue! They have a garage door open that serves as the back entrance and a very open floor plan that leaves it feeling spacious, open, and bright (sunshine allowing of course). I'm a sucker for good natural lighting, so I was definitely a big fan of the open features. Staff were friendly and suggested their drop coffee. I'm usually a almond milk latte kind of girl, but I thought the roast was smooth and not too bitter... full disclosure I did add a touch of sugar to it, but even still, a very pleasant flavor just on its own. They do have wifi that seems to work well, and if you're looking for a hipster vibe, look no further! Overall a super fun find, and I will likely be back. read more

These guys won a 2015 Good Food award alongside such well-known roasters as Verve, Blue Bottle, Noble, and Four Barrell. The Pica Pica blend is always a good go-to for anyone but I highly suggest you ask for a single origin recommendation. The décor is clean industria and the atmosphere is relaxed. I just came from there. Fantastic Coffee. It wasn't Crowded, and the Owner, Mark was a Friendly Guy to chat with. Coffee is Self Service, and they don't charge for Refills. Next time I'm there, I'll bring my Daughter for either Hot Cocoa or Tea since she doesn't drink Coffee. Sorry they weren't Roasting that day, I would've loved to watch that. read more

I love espresso. I have had the opportunity to sample all of the espresso in Reno. Yes, I have a problem. Yes, I'm good with it! Long story short, Magpie has the best quality equipment and espresso in Reno, not to mention they fresh roast daily. Lesson was learned when owner talked me out of 6 shots to 4 and it changed my espresso drinking fabric. I'm forever gratefull and buzzed on legal narcotics! Thank you Magpie! read more
