I ordered the spicy level 3, but will go to a level 4 on my next visit. The lack of a 5th star is not related to the food, rather the slow service. An additional server is needed as ours was much too busy. We had asked for a desert menu but after a 15 minute wait to order it, we gave up and signaled for our check. We've been enjoying Mai Thai for years and have never been disappointed. In terms of food, the sushi is the best in the area and the Thai spring rolls are the best I've ever had. Believe it or not, Mai Thai was once a Long John Silvers! When they first opened, you could still see hints of the fast food chain. Now they look downright amazing, as the inside feels like an authentic, classy Asian restaurant complete with sushi bar. Anyone who can turn a Long John's into a hip & healthy restaurant has my admiration. I really wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often. (I'd probably be there once a week!) Alright, onto the food. I have three favorites here: - Pad Thai - Spicy Eggplants Stir Fry (yes, it's named eggplants, with an "s") - Basil Chicken Stir Fry The Pad Thai comes out on a boat-sized plate. It's like a trough of Thai! Both stir fries come with a hearty amount of fresh veggies and a perfectly round scoop of white rice on the side. I really like this, being able to mix what I want, rather than having the rice get soggy. The appetizers are pretty tasty too. Just make sure you're really hungry if you order one. - Fried Tofu w/ sweet Thai peanut sauce (8 pieces) - Crab puffs (5 pieces) - Sushi There is a sushi bar at Mai Thai, so you can get pretty much anything. A long menu presents a variety of choices. I like the Smoky Roll and Spicy Tuna, or Salmon Roll. These are in the $6.00 - $8.00 range and are served as 6 - 8 small rolls. Other rolls go into the $13.00+ range. The servers here are very friendly and attentive. Cute, young Japanese girls make sure you are taken care of and that your drinks never run dry. I ought to try some other dishes than my main three, but they are so darn tasty I can't stray away! I crave one of them every visit. Mai Thai serves dozens more combinations of stir frys, noodle dishes, curries, and sushi. All entrees are vegetarian friendly, and can be substituted with tofu. Also, if you're someone who loves spice, Mai Thai offers level 1 - 10. If 10 is not hot enough, they add a bunch of hot peppers. (I'm not big on spicy, but my friend orders a 10 + hot peppers. 4.5 Stars. If my next visit is as good as my first, I'll be upping this to 5 stars. I find myself in Florence on a weekly basis as 2 of my top 10 accounts are nearby. I've had lunch at the forgettable pub/cafe next door, so forgettable that I can't remember the name despite multiple visits. I'd always seen Mai Thai and had been meaning to try it, but I wasn't sold on the idea of Florence housing the area's best Thai food. Boy was I wrong. I picked up two lunch orders of panang curry with chicken and two spring rolls. I paid with cash and received a 10% discount for helping them avoid CC fees. The portion on the panang curry was on par with the sizes that Thai Express USED to give. Their prices are just about the same. $7-9 for most lunch entrees. The flavor was absolutely on point. I wouldn't change a thing about it. It's a tough dish to get right, but Mai Thai hits a perfect balance of 'sweet and creamy coconut' and 'light your taste buds on fire' Thai hot. Their spring rolls were great too, although they looked more like Chinese spring rolls with the thicker wrapping. Why not 5 stars? I need to try more than one dish to justify giving out 5 stars. This place is 2 minutes from my house so we eat here anytime we're looking for good Thai food. Their sushi is always really good, as are the curries, noodles, and rice dishes. Recently I had the pineapple fried rice with chicken and it was REALLY good. The dinner portion is huge though, so expect left overs. The service is always good, but this is a relatively small place so expect a lot of noise when its packed with people. This same fact can make it difficult to call in take out orders so make sure you speak loudly and clearly when you call. read more

Whenever my husband is out of town and I'm too tired to cook for myself, I go to Mai Thai and get an order of pad thai to go. I love the mix of flavors in this dish. They are so fresh and bright with the cilantro and lime. The serving is large enough I have enough food for dinner and lunch the next day. I've tried a few other menu items, but always come back to the pad thai. If you pay in cash, they give you 10% your order since you're saving them the bank credit card fees. The menu says they go to hot level 5 but when you ask for as hot as it gets they might ask you on a one to ten level. I suggest you don't go for the 10. Started with the $3.95 Thai salad which was almost entree sized. The first 3 bites were tangy, with fresh and crisp shredded carrots and cabbage. But after that it became too sweet on its own and I needed spicy curyy for balance. The mango curry at 4 stars was not too hot, but very flavorful and full of vegetables. They have soy paper which makes a difference to me. I've noticed that some sushi places in this area have not even heard of soy paper. Great Thai, we will be back. We started with soup, it was good. I ordered Pad Thai chicken, medium spice. I was very pleased with the food. The portion was big, I took half home for lunch the next day. The wife had mango curry and enjoyed. We shared a couple deserts, the fried bananas were awesome. A perfect treat a la mode. Not impressed Yelpers. In Florence on business and read the reviews and decided to try some sushi here instead of driving downtown. Bad decision. The sushi menu is about six different types of seafood, that's it. Yes they have lots of rolls but if you want nigiri you have very few choices. Fish was fine, rolls were okay but nothing but average. Hopefully this is not the norm but we had fruit flies buzzing around us our whole meal. Service was average but the Kirin beer was good. Really good Thai! The basil fried rice is the bomb, spring extra for it, you won't be disappointed. We went for lunch, and it was packed and quite loud as the place is quite tiny, and all hard surfaces. The crab puff appetizers were excellent, but the spring rolls were REALLY small...good, but small. My spicy chicken entree was yummy and hot, but the portion was quite small as well. Having been a fan of Sweet Basil and Sushi Thai (before sushi Thai closed) for some time I am very fond and somewhat critical on thai/oriental fare. Their service is prompt once seated but can be stuck in a tight waiting area before being greeted. Usually food comes out in only a matter of a couple minutes. Everything has always been fresh and quite tasty. My only critique would be to offer a spicier option. I always order a 4 (the max) and feel it isn't as hot as I would like. Mai Thai blows SB away in food quality, taste, speed of service, and atmosphere. We shared the pad thai, thai spicy and sweet and sour chicken....all very tasty. Service was quick, friendly and there is far more space than SB so cramping is not an issue. The only thing SB has on this place is that it includes soup with lunch, but the soup is bland and the portion size here is about 50% greater. Mai Thai is authentic Thai food made by authentic Thai folks; I would have to fly to Thailand to have a mango curry as balanced as the one I was fortunate to have tonight. The ambiance of the small restaurant, it used to be a Long John Silver- a remarkable makeover, is calming and traditional Thai music plays softly (even in Thailand it is hard to hear traditional Thai music). The Mai Thai also features a classy looking bar with a wine selection (Sorry wine snobs, I do not drink alcohol so I can not comment) and a Japanese sushi bar. Beautiful interior.
