In the past, I always looked forward to visiting Maison Mathis when in New Haven. I recently adopted a pretty restrictive diet due to some health issues but felt confident about traveling as I knew the cafe had plenty of healthy options & a well labeled menu. When my family and I started to place our order, the woman at the register was immediately rude and condescending to us. My aunt asked me if I would like a La Croix, and I replied that I couldn't have one. The cashier rolled her eyes and scoffed at me, then mocked the way my aunt pronounced La Croix. I left. I reached out to management and never received a response. Judging by the other comments, this type of staff behavior is common. On the bright side, this experience helped me discover there are plenty of places in New Haven that are actually welcoming to people with food allergies! read more

Atmosphere: Maison Mathis is right by Yale's campus and has a bright, welcoming interior with lots of natural lighting. The space is perfect for studying, catching up with friends, or grabbing a bite. Service: Our food came out pretty quickly and the service overall was nice! Food: We ordered the Loaded Avocado and Lazarus Smoothie. To be honest, we weren't sure what to expect with the Loaded Avocado, but we hoped that it would be bigger than it was. Quite literally, it was a plate with half an avocado, some veggies on top, and a small serving of bread and greens. The eggs were decent, but the avocado and veggies weren't the freshest or tastiest. The Lazarus Smoothie tasted fresh and fruity but had an odd grassy aftertaste that didn't really go well with the rest of the drink. We weren't sure what the aftertaste was coming from, since the smoothie was made of pineapple, banana, vanilla syrup, and orange juice. Overall: Maison Mathis has a youthful and clean energy to it but has mediocre food and drinks. Especially at the price, we were hoping for better quality and portions. A super cute cafe with tasty food and a chill vibe! I came with a friend for lunch on a Tuesday, and it wasn't crowded at all. There were a handful of people who had brought their laptops and were working, and the atmosphere seems perfect for that on a weekday! (I hear it can get crowded on weekends) The house rules state you have to order at the counter before grabbing a table, and a party of no less than 3 should sit at a table for 4. This second rule did not seem to be followed at all, as there were plenty of tables of 4 with just 1 person seated there. For food, I got an americano with hazelnut syrup and the loaded avocado. My friend got a latte and a croque madame. The food was nothing mind-blowing but it was good. They're known for their waffles here, so we also tried to get the fresh fruit waffle and the seasonal waffle. Unfortunately, by 11 AM (when we ordered the waffles), they had run out of whipped cream AND the seasonal waffle. We ended up requesting a refund on the seasonal waffle and had the fresh fruit waffle with just the strawberries, syrup, and powdered sugar. The fresh fruit waffle without the whipped cream was still really good! Overall, will definitely be back, but please be better about having enough stuff so as to not run out within hours of opening. read more

I've been here a handful of times to study. This is hands down one of my favorite coffee/brunch spots here in New Haven. Their Belgian Mocha and Belgian waffles are my go-to; I've tried their turmeric mocha (not sure what turmeric is suppose to taste like but for some reason I wasn't disappointed) and matcha mocha which is my second go- to. I am really impressed with their wraps as I wasn't always the biggest fan. The first one I ever got here was the grilled veggie wrap and I respect a place that can make a vegetarian dish taste great and satisfying - so much respect that I even tried their tofu wrap which inspired me to start making my own wraps at home. The chorizo wrap was just terrific and did not feel so heavy. And to tie it all together - the place is just really well put together and clean whenever I go there. read more

Cold, stark and empty. I really want to like this place. I've tried it several times. It's the same each time. A very nice, clean and modern design inside and out. Fresh baked goods and chocolates are in the display case and look really good. I've only ever had a chocolate chip cookie though. I branched out and had a matcha latte this time, with a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie is good, not great. The latte was weak. Aside from the few sweets, there's nothing else but empty counters and display cases. There's a lockbox on the front door. Maybe they aren't going to be here much longer? I went to Maison Mathis in New Haven and was in the mood for a coffee. The place is spacious and vibrant with plenty of natural night. The last time I was here it was a nice fall day and I sat outside. They do all sorts of lunch options, they're a Belgian restaurant, so the Belgian waffles are their go to. I got a matcha latte, the others in my party got strawberry tea and hot chocolate. I can't say I was impressed. Their prices aren't listed anywhere, which I find to be very sneaky. I appreciate the presentation of the drinks, everything came in proper ceramic dish ware, not in paper cups. My matcha wasn't good at all. It tasted very powdery and tart, even with additional sugar it still wasn't good. The hot chocolate tasted like it came from a packet, which is unfortunate, because these three things together including the tea were just under $20.00. The strawberry tea was fine, it had a great taste and smell. But it was just tea, they poured hot water over a teabag. I haven't tried their food, but I'm not particularly looking forward to it. We stumbled upon this cute coffee shop/bakery after a food coma induced stupor from another New Haven eatery and boy am I glad we did! Maison Mathis has that kind of posh, European interior that just MAKES you want to order a latte and macaron and just relax. Which, by the way, was exactly what we did. For dessert, we paired their Belgian Mocha with the Valentine Belgian (sliced strawberries and chocolate drizzled over a crisp Belgian waffle). Their macarons were just too photogenic to ignore so that was tacked on as well. No major complaints with any of the treats here! Though you would think at these price points, they would at the very least put some latte art on that Belgian Mocha... Regardless, Maison Mathis is an ideal location to just curl up with a book or laptop and a warm drink of choice to weather these cold New England days to come. I just love this place. First in for most: get the chocolate chip cookie! It is sheer perfection. It is worth going early enough in the day to be sure they haven't run out of them! It's practically as big as a small dinner plate, it's wonderfully gooey, and it's salted on top! I have been to this place a couple of times now and have tried their pesto chicken salad and they're grilled veggie wrap. Both were excellent. The environment is clean and crisp and comfortable. This coffee shop is right in the Shops at Yale, so it has a prime location. There's paid parking across in the Shops at Yale lot and sometimes there's available street parking, but I typically find it had to park in this area. The interior of this place is very nice. They have the white and marble trend of this era down to a T, however the longer you're inside the more I notice that the appearance isn't support with the details of the space. The chairs, especially the stools which are at all the bars and some high tables, are very tiny and uncomfortable. The backed chairs aren't very comfy either, which for a coffee shop to me is an issue. I come to a coffee shop to sit and chat or sit and work. They both are lengthy time spent in one spot. It should be comfy. Now, the counter to that is they have WiFi and plentiful outlets, which is a big plus for working but I wouldn't want to come here often for work due to the seating. As for the food and drink, my first time here I was happy with my caramel tart and mini cake, but my second time here the tart is eh at best (not as good as a boxed lemon bar for flavor) so I'm questioning my first impression. My chai was comparably disappointing and not worth the money. Ultimately, this isn't the place I'd want to return to for the food or the work environment, so it's not a great spot for me. read more

I don't know why I thought I had reviewed Maison Mathis, but I had not. I love the space here and they serve Counter Culture coffee (which is very good). It's down the street from the York St. Blue State, and personally I think that the food is better here. The coffee is slightly better here, the oat milk (califia) they use here is very good and the coffee is very smooth. I also really love their juices and they have expanded their vegan options since I first started coming here to include some tofu and mock meats, and the vegan items are clearly labeled on the menu and snackpass. Some items are hit (avocado toast, grain bowl) and some meh (vegan Asian chicken wrap - sauce is cloyingly sweet and there is way too much of it). The store pre covid was always on top of cleanliness but, to be honest, aside from adding two pick up stations (one for snackpass and one for uber eats) and having a socially distanced order line, the seating itself and the capacity looked like pre-pandemic level Maison, with one couple eating outside. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable dining indoors here because of the capacity. It is too pricy for my everyday coffee habit, and they don't have vegan desserts (go down the street to BSC for that), but I wouldn't mind stopping in for a nice treat or a good salad. read more

I enjoy the coffee and food here. The service is probably the worst in the area. The service industry is hard, oftentimes unforgiving, and workers often have to deal with unpleasant customers...but the staff at Maison Mathis seem to hate you from the second you step inside. As if you eating there is a personal insult. They are rude, ignore requests, and are (often) downright mean. It's actually so intense that I looked up whether or not it was one of those restaurants where the staff being mean was part of the experience, but it is not. I'm a California native, and I would definitely hop onto a place to Connecticut for some Maison Mathis. Found this place when I was exploring near Yale, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Belgian waffle with whipped cream and caramel sauce was soooo good. Perfect ratio of crisp outside to fluffy inside. I'm normally not a caramel fan but this was excellent. I also had the salmon and egg sandwich. It was runny and messy and delicious. I really enjoyed the sandwich bread too. Spend an afternoon in New Haven and I promise you'll find yourself at the Shops at Broadway. When you're ready for a bite to eat or something sweet, head across the street to Maison Mathis. I needed to catch up on work emailed after spending the afternoon shopping, but not much in downtown New Haven is open late. Maison is open until 10. You can order anything from salads to paninis, to waffles topped with berries and the most whipped cream you'll ever see. The space is great - tons of seating between lounge chairs, high and low top tables. The decor gives off a retro chic vibe (be sure to check out he printed floor!) I had a chai tea latte to start my afternoon of work. You order right at the counter and they'll literally make you anything. My latte came out quickly and was perfect in every way. I try a lot of chai lattes! This one was perfectly blended. For dinner I ordered the quinoa bowl with chicken. Interesting combination, right? The menu seriously has a bit of everything!
