I was looking for a place to eat nearby to my sister's hair and pedicure appointment which opened early and items on the menu that we wanted to try and I found this place, which has only been opened for 5 months! The space is serene and comfy as I reserved a cozy booth for my sister, hubby and me. Service was friendly but at the time we arrived, J was helping 4-5 tables and couldn't meet all our requests in a timely manner so we asked James to help us get some creamer and sugar for my sister's coffee, and containers for our condiments. So it isn't entirely our server's fault because she was taking care of other tables at the same time. I found this place on TikTok, and of course, my first thought was that the interior looked beautiful and the food looked good. Unfortunately, my actual experience was disappointing. First, the music was extremely loud. I understand wanting a lively atmosphere, but this is a restaurant, not a club. My friends and I had to speak loudly just to hear each other, which made the dining experience uncomfortable. The service was also disappointing from the beginning. My two friends and I were seated at the bar because the wait for a table was already too long, and we figured sitting at the bar would be quicker. The hostess told us she would double-check the bar and then brought us over. However, when we arrived, there were still cups with alcohol left on the table from the previous customers. If the table had been checked before seating us, I would have expected it to be cleared and ready. The bartender who served us also took quite a while to bring us water and utensils. Her demeanor came across as unfriendly and as though she didn't want to be there. I completely understand that everyone has bad days, but that shouldn't translate into making customers feel unwelcome, especially when it's their first visit. When we were ready to order, I asked for the strawberry French toast. The bartender immediately responded in an irritated tone, "We're out of that, sorry." I had no problem with the item being unavailable, but the tone made the interaction feel unnecessarily rude. There was also no warm welcome, no explanation of the menu, and very little effort to make us feel like valued customers. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was how differently my friends and I were treated. One of my friends ordered a chocolate martini, and the bartender suggested a matcha martini to my other friend. My friend initially declined, saying it was okay, but the bartender went ahead and made the drink anyway, then told her, "Thank you for waiting, it's on the house." She ultimately comped both drinks, which was a nice gesture toward my friends. However, I couldn't help but notice that I wasn't offered the same courtesy, despite also having an unpleasant interaction and having my original order unavailable. It created an awkward dynamic and honestly made me feel as though I was somehow the problem, even though I was polite throughout the entire interaction and made sure to say "please" and "thank you." Went in on a Saturday for an early dinner and the inside wasn't too busy. There's plenty of booth and tables. We were seated by the hostess and she said she'd bring us the happy hour menu but never did so we had to ask another person. Our server came shortly after. There's a lot of staff/employees when we went so service wasn't too bad. We got two orders of the OG Wings which comes with 6 pieces of wings and a side of coleslaw. It tastes like buffalo chicken and was pretty good for the happy hour price. Deff not worth it if you're paying regular price in my opinion. We also got the Cajun garlic fries which were alright. The flavor was alright and the sauce it came with was a bit bland in my opinion. We also got the classic flatbread which is like a pepperoni pizza and that was good but not worth the price at $15. We got the KFC & Waffles, Ube Pancakes, Birria Skillet, Jo-ah-yo Skillet, and the quinoa & Kale salad I get it it's trendy it's cute. but man we were shocked by the portion sizes for how much items cost. The most disappointing being the KFC & Waffle. For $21 it was barely a chicken. Also it was unsettling that upon sitting the communal sauces and syrup are just sititng open in a square dipping dish without any coverings . They def look like one time use but we noticed it was sitting on every table so we opted not to use it because... who knows what the table before you did to it. If you do come I would say spend your money on the skillets. The birria would be our top choice, the yo ah yo was good, more chicken than the waffle, but a lot of potatoes. The Ube pancake was the worse. We all barely took a bite. It's like they took the ratio of baking soda / powder wrong? Service -- while friendly when we received it -- was lacking. We had to wait multiple times for our water to be refilled, and servers would walk around juggling 3-4 carafes for large parties (like ours). It seems a bit inefficient and burdensome for the servers; they could just leave a carafe on the table for large parties and fill up the carafe instead? Additionally, I'm not sure how their ordering system works, but our server had to press multiple buttons each time we ordered an item. It took a good minute or two for each of us to place our order while we waited for him to put it into the system. Our server also seemed forgetful, and we had to remind him a few times to bring a box for our food at the end of our meal. Again, super friendly when he interacted with us, but definitely have areas to grow. The food, on the other hand, came out quickly. We came on a Friday around noon expecting the lunch menu, but they were only offering their brunch menu at that time. We ordered a variety of things, and nothing particularly wowed us, although it was tasty. I think I was most disappointed with the tiramisu French toast. It came out looking like a literal hot mess. The coffee cream and mascarpone were melting off of the hot bread and became a sopping pool at the bottom of the plate even before we took a bite. So I will say we went on a Thursday at like 3:30pm, so service was lacking but I don't completely blame them. We stood at the front for a while without being acknowledged and then just decided to sit at the bar. This ended up being the better choice as the bartended gave good service. We got a couple drinks, they were all pretty delicious so no complaints there. Food came out with decent speed. I really wanted to try the jalapeño poppers that I knew my husband wouldn't eat so I got a lighter entre of a Caesar salad. This was probably my biggest mistake. The salad was just okay. The chicken was a chicken thigh, which just isn't what you expect when you add chicken to a salad. It also had a spot or two that I was questioning if it was fully cooked. I know dark meat can look that way but I just opted not to eat those bites. The jalapeño poppers were also like a 3/5 for me. The presentation was nice, but I didn't love the sauce and the filling was also just okay for my taste buds. My husband said the burger and fries were pretty good. I later heard the bartender say the bowls are his favorite to another customer. I want to come back and give it another shot but as of right now, food was just medium. Our collective favorite dish had to be the butter chicken wings (flavorful with slight sweetness & very meaty). I kept on saying to myself that I want to go here and here I am right now. One of the nicest places to go to in Newark. It looks very modern and beautiful as soon as I step in. About this restaurant, this seems to be more of a fusion or New American restaurant since I'm seeing dishes with words like "birria" and "Korean". They also serve coffee, cocktails, and other types of drinks. So it seems like they're wanting to be as diverse as possible, but I honestly got no problem with that. They basically serve breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner especially happy hour only at certain days and times. I noticed that they gave me a brunch menu only since it's around 1pm, which is of course brunch at the time. I asked one of the staff about when lunch starts and apparently they start at 2:30pm. My issue is that they should be more transparent about the start and end times of breakfast and lunch for instance. Perhaps, a sign about hours of breakfast and other meal types would help. Otherwise, that leaves customers having to look up online so that they can come at the right time. They only have happy hour sign but not the sign of regular meal times? Anyways, I've been wanting to order my food as soon as possible but the service was quite slow. One of the managers apparently has to tell one of the waiters to take my order. At the same time, they have to do what's in front of them right now. Otherwise, they're just off guard with what they're doing. I didn't get any drink since I had matcha this morning as well as a cupcake. So at the same time, I need to watch my sugar levels. Located inside a very busy plaza; parking is free as there is a huge parking lot was available but very busy and crowded. Upon entering, I noticed that the waiting area is quite spacious. Lovely ambience, very chic! Seating is available while you check in and wait for a table. As we were a party of two and we didn't have a reservation, the hostess at the front desk informed me that the wait time is about 20 mins or I can be seated very soon if I choose bar seating. So, we chose bar seating and we were seated immediately. We were greeted immediately while seated at the bar and we ordered drinks and entrees. As it's brunch, menu for brunch was available. For the drinks, we had chose the cappuccino and chai tea and for the entrees, we chose the chocolate pancakes and steak & eggs. Our drinks were ready within five minutes and our entrees were brought to us about fifteen minutes later. Was a little disappointed in the drinks; the chai was very watered down and bland, tasted very watered down. Didn't finish the drink. Portions for our entrees, however, were decent sized and it was good. The staff is very kind and did check in on us, very patient and friendly. I would definitely return in the future; very open to trying something new on the menu. Very clean restaurant. Lovely presentation and quality; the food is good; reasonably priced. Maybe fluff up the rice a bit and use a bowl to shape it before crowning it with the patty, eggs, and gravy. Eggs were nice and runny! No complaints about them. Chocolate lava cake ended the meal on the sweetness note. Soft and moist chocolate cake with a hot melted center oozing out with each spoonful. I noticed a strong unpleasant smell coming from the menu itself, I think it was the material they used. At a first glance of the menu it was a little overwhelming, not necessarily from the options itself but more so all the different flavor profiles. I think there are too many different types of food and should stick with things that bring more consistency. Some of the food was unfortunately under cooked and two of the drinks were great but the third one was not good. The pineapple upside down cake was good the churros not so much. Our waitress said we ordered more of the popular items from the menu and shared the Happy Hour times as well as the brunch menu with us. This is a nice big establishment that has great potential it just needs to review what works and what does not. I would like to visit for brunch and hope to give a brighter review next visit. read more

I couldn't wait to try Toast & Tonique because everything I read about it made it sound like the type of place we so desperately need in Newark. We've had a serious lack of restaurants with an interesting menu that serve alcohol, have reasonable prices, and can deliver on ambiance with an attractive, upscale decor. They even serve weekend brunch which was our first experience here. This is where things went slightly downhill with well-prepared but under-seasoned food. I tried their fluffy, cheesy Curry Omelette which was delicious but served along with cold, bland (but well-cooked) country potatoes. My husband described his Birria Skillet more like a Pot Roast Skillet which was also well-cooked but missing the seasonings he was expecting. We also noted that service was a bit slow but not inattentive. They stopped by several times to keep us posted that our food was in the works, so that was appreciated. The bottom line is that this is a low 4 for now, but I couldn't see giving it less when it has so much potential. We heard from the servers that kinks are still being worked out in the kitchen over the menu and we'll definitely be back to enjoy the evolution. read more

A fascinating place. Hidden inside an otherwise humble strip mall is this very stylish, luxurious, and upscale restaurant. I was actually quite shocked walking in - it was like being teleported to the type of establishment you'd expect to see in San Francisco or the Peninsula, not in Newark. The menu was unique as well. It had dishes from all over the place. Korean Fried Chicken was listed next to Fish & Chips and next to Samosa Burgers. I came in expecting an American restaurant sort of theme, but it kind of defies categorization. Think of the Cheesecake Factory's diversity, but with a much smaller and manageable menu. Keep in mind that brunch, which seems to have a lot of delectable options, is limited to certain hours. My wife and I ordered the Samosa Burger, Fish & Chips, and chocolate lava cake. All of them exceeded our expectations, especially the lava cake! I guess I thought that a newer restaurant with such a diverse menu might have mediocre food quality. I was wrong. Expertly done, right out of the gate. Everything was flavorful and the textures were fantastic. Can I go back to talking about the atmosphere? The black walls, the warmly lit bar, the trendy music, and the ketchup served to us in a tiny holder on a large plate? I loved it. Anyway, I'd suggest giving this place a try. It's perfect for dates or any other special occasion where you want to go somewhere a little bit more impressive. The servers were also nice, attentive, and well-dressed. In Newark, CA of all places. Absolutely loved our dining experience here . Don't be fooled by the quiet and bland strip mall it is located in. Once you step in you are in for a treat. It's fancy, trendy, upscale, a place where you'd take your girl on a date or family for fun night. Saw this place on instagram and also our friends recommended this. The drinks were so tasty, strong, trendy and instagramable. For apps we got fried pickles. Am a pickle lover so I liked it. We got the Bombay chicken sliders. Love how they incorporated mint sauce mixed with coleslaw placed on burger patty. Chefs kiss. We even got chance to speak with the chef. Our waitress Megan is super sweet and friendly. Could've been 5 stars but it seems like the restaurant is still working some kinks out with drinks and food. I'll say if you come to toast & tonique ask for Joy if she is working. Such a great experience me and my wife had from her overall service and personality. The decor feels very modern with also a bunch of TVs if you are trying to catch any games on. The brunch food was okay, but we were told that their specialty is actually dinner so we will have to come back and try it out. The tiramisu French toast was delicious but a bit hard to cut into without making a mess. Their hash brown was delicious, I ordered it extra crispy. Also had a fruit bowl, eggs Benedict, and side of avocado for my wife. She said the eggs Benedict wasn't the best she has had and that it was just okay. The fruit was a lot of citrus fruits, she was hoping there would be some berries besides just strawberries. For the drinks we got the Oaxaca old fashioned, Chun Li, and Beullubeli. The Oaxaca old fashioned was easy to drink, a little too easy as it tasted watered down right away. For any old fashioned it should start off strong with its flavor and let it dilute with the ice. I drank it all and let Joy know about it, she said she can make another more to my liking but I just wanted to let her know how it was. The Chun Li that my wife ordered however was on the extra tart side of the drink. So much when I took a sip it tasted like I just licked a lemon. She couldn't drink any of her drink and Joy was kindly enough to have the bartender redo it. When it was redone it was a lot better. The drink that stole the show and is their number 1 seller is the Beullubeli. This drink came out perfect. Soft fruity note with a nice lemon zest with the perfect taste of the vodka at the end to make you want to take another sip or another glass after you have finished it. The entire experience was great, hopefully the food will be better for dinner as it was just average, drinks could use some perfecting, but Joy was the highlight of the experience. Side note: for some reason they had the condiments out in the open on dishes, not sure if I like that just being out on the side like that. Also this place replaced Pocha K and has been open for 3 months. Brunch was on their original hours but they added it per customers request so hopefully that means they take feedback seriously. read more

Any time you try something new that's less than a month old there's a chance it may not go well. That was not the case at Toast & Tonique. This place is a future gem for Newark and something this town hasn't had in forever. The pictures online don't do this place justice. It looks like a simple diner but in reality it's the closest thing to fine dining that you'll find in Newark. The menu isn't overwhelming but they offer so many different cuisines. We started off with the pork belly bao buns and the Mexi-Cali wings. Both were incredible and blew us away. Especially the wings. They offer several different types of wings which is just another reason to keep coming back. My main was the Bombay Sliders which were made with lamb. The lamb was cooked perfectly. My only gripe would be the amount of sauce made it somewhat difficult to eat. The highlight of the evening, beyond the food, was the service from Megan. She knew the menu well and was conversational with us. She was incredibly friendly as was the rest of the staff. The manager, Eric, came by and chatted with us for a bit as well. I really hope Toast & Tonique succeeds and stays in Newark for a long time. I know we'll do our part to keep this place going. We can't wait to come back and try more of this menu! read more

Don't let the aesthetics fool you; this place was not good at all. There was practically nobody when we walked in on a weekday brunch time and now I understand why. We were served immediately and took a few minutes to look through the brunch menu. We ended up ordering both the Breakfast Sandwich & Birria Skillet, and both were pretty bad. The Breakfast Sandwich had decent tasting bacon and a lightly sweet brioche bread, but the sandwich as a whole just did not taste good. It lacked a lot of flavor and wasn't mindblowing at all. The fries were decent though. The best part about my boyfriend's Birria Skillet was probably the tator tots (which are probably frozen) - his birria meat was completely flavorless and unappetizing. My boyfriend and I dined here and didn't finish either of our options because it was that bland and flavorless. Also, I felt a lack of urgency from our waiter whenever we requested something, despite the restaurant being practically empty. I also don't understand why our waiter wouldn't leave us a pitcher of water instead of coming over to refill our glasses just halfway multiple times - I had to request that he leave a pitcher of water with us so that we had to stop waiting for him to come around to fill our waters up. I felt like we waited a while just to order our entrees and to get to-go boxes. What's ironic is I would have enjoyed the Frosted Flakes cereal cup in my car much more than this entire brunch. I wish we had a better experience here, but we did not so we probably won't be coming back. marveled when I walked in at how much the interior had changed from the previous restaurant that was there. first impression, very instagrammable and cutesy, cool vibes. the menu was a little confusing at first because I thought it was a mix of brunch and regular menu, but then they offer Mexican, Indian and Asian inspired fusion dishes. I guess best to just say they have a variety of options. we only had a couple of apps and drinks during happy hour. the cajun garlic fries were too spicy for my liking but I have a low spice tolerance. the street corn was okay - not bad, but not an attention getter either. perhaps what's dragging this review down the most was the service. we ordered two drinks from our server and it took a very long time to receive them. the order had been put in for awhile. then we saw someone finally making them and he put them at the edge of the bar to be delivered to us. literally took another 10-12 mins before a server picked them up and that's because we had to flag someone down to let them know our drinks had been sitting there. despite this, the servers seemed friendly. it just was a little concerning bc the restaurant was not very busy at all. overall, might return with a group of friends but not adding to my rotation list just yet. read more

We had a great time for early lunch today. They have the brunch menu available which was perfect even with one person who has a dairy allergy and one with a gluten sensitivity. The waiters were helpful and gave us advice on what to eat. The restaurant itself seemed clean and very busy, it's clearly a popular choice! I'll be coming again if I have the opportunity. read more

We came here for brunch, which is served from 8-12 (the rest of the menu can only be preferred after 12). There's a long bar inside and nice booth seating, and the windows let in a nice amount of natural lighting. Service did take a little while, especially for how empty the place was when we arrived. We ordered the Banana Espresso, the Korean Loaded skillet, and a Spanish Omelette. The Banana Espresso was very nice, with a clear espresso flavor that wasn't overpowered with sweetness that other places might do. The Spanish Omelette was refreshing as well. It's made of egg whites and some veggies, so I wouldn't expect something like a Spanish tortilla. But the egg white omelette is a light flavor, and the fresh jalapeños layered on top add a nice kick of spice. The Loaded Korean skillet was interesting, but as a breakfast food for me it was heavier than I'd personally like. Two sunny-side up fried eggs layered on top of mini-pancakes, Korean fried chicken, kimchi, American cheese, and a bed of tatter tots sounds like a good time, but I felt like the flavors didn't mesh as well as I'd like when put all together. I went here to celebrate my birthday and the overall vibe was great! The whole place is definitely a vibe and the employees are all super nice. I ordered the pork belly bowl and my favorite part about it was honestly the fried rice with it. My family and I agreed that the top foods were definitely the apps like the street corn and tikka flatbread.
